Landlords in line for the Expo Preparations are being made for the region’s largest property show to be held in autumn.
SARAH WALKER
The Merseyside Landlords Expo ’09 is being held at the newly refurbished Floral Pavilion in New Brighton on 10 September. The private rented sector trade show will cater for serious landlords and letting professionals from the private sector with more than 50
leading companies exhibiting in the space. Sarah Walker, who co-hosts the BBC ‘To Buy or Not To Buy’ programmer will be a special guest at the event and will answer questions, and there will also be a live property auction on the day itself. Nicola Rigby, marketing and communications manager from NewHeartlands, the Housing Market Renewal pathfinder, commented: “This is a fantastic opportunity for landlords to show what they have on offer for people across all areas of Merseyside. Our accredited landlords in Wirral pride themselves on the high standards of housing they have to offer in line with the scheme, and are looking forward to exhibiting in September. We would encourage anyone who wants to take part to get in touch.”

THE VIEW FROM BEETHAM PLAZA
Employment solutions event Canter Levin & Berg Solicitors is holding an event to inform businesses about employment issues at Goodison Park on 9 June. The event, held at the home of Everton F.C., will see companies join together to ‘beat the blues’ on issues concerning collective redundancy procedures and new dismissal and grievance procedures. Commencing at 1pm, with employment barrister Will Burrows’ overview of collective redundancy, the seminar will run until 2pm when changes in the Employment Act 2008 will come under the spotlight. The seminars will conclude with refreshments. Speaker Will Burrows commented: “This is an opportunity for local businesses to gain vital knowledge of recent updates in employment law. Employment law affects virtually all managers and HR professionals and it is essential that all these professionals have a firm grounding in the law. Employment Solutions aims to work with these professionals to ensure that your business is protected". For more information contact Will Burrows on 0151 239 1000.
Beetham Plaza was ‘home’ for celebrated American actor Samuel L. Jackson when he visited Liverpool to film The 51st State in 2001 (and it’s said that he then became a fan of L.F.C.). The academy awardnominated actor was a resident in the exclusive address and neighbour to some of Merseyside’s prolific footballers for several months. Robert Carlyle was also said to stay at the residence. He enjoyed a 44 ft terrace overlooking the Three Graces during his stay in the city, and a 36 ft balcony overlooking Beetham Plaza.
Now on the market with King Sturge, the property offers a fully fitted kitchen, open plan living areas, three bedrooms, a bathroom, ensuite facilities and a residents’ gym. Shannon Conway, associate at King Sturge, commented on the lifestyle offered at the development: “The underfloor heating would have been fully utilized in our British weather, and the concierge would have been there to help 24 hours a day.” To view this apartment at Beetham Plaza, which is priced at £625,000, contact King Sturge on 0151 242 6490. The crowning event One of the most successful regeneration projects in Merseyside will be honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony in Liverpool city centre. The Strictly Regeneration! Awards 09 will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Thursday June 4. The night is a celebration of the contribution that a varied range of projects and organisations have made to the renaissance of the area. There are ten awards being
made on the night, including four unique ‘Champion’ awards for individuals or bodies who have made an outstanding contribution to the regeneration process. The shortlist features projects related to the arts, health, housing, youth work and the environment, all of which

received funding from either the Working Neighbourhoods Fund or from Housing Market Renewal in Liverpool, Sefton and Wirral. Pauline Davis, managing director of NewHeartlands, the housing market renewal pathfinder for Merseyside, said: “A great deal of excellent work
has been going on in the Merseyside area, and the Strictly Regeneration! Awards are all about recognising that hard work, and the positive contribution these projects are making to the region as a whole. We have all been very impressed at the standard of entries we have received this year.”
Online attraction C&D Properties has announced the launch of its new interactive website. Featuring the full range of houses and apartments the firm has available throughout the city centre and surrounding areas, the new design is intended to be user-friendly and efficient. Ian Murray, managing director at C&D Properties, said: “We are really proud of our new website. An awful lot of work went into its functionality and design as our aim was a totally user-friendly site that ensured clients could find the property they wanted with the 28 Your Move
minimum of fuss.” He added: “Judging from the terrific feedback we are receiving from prospective tenants and our landlords, we have achieved that aim. We would urge people to visit and bookmark www.cdproperties.co.uk to check out the wide selection of properties available”. An official launch party for the new website is to be held in June, further details of which will be announced in Your Move.

RIVER-PRIDE
DOORS OPEN TO FAMILIES Spacious new properties in a great location are now being offered at Gladedale’s Canterbury Fields development in St Helens. JOHN TARN, RIVERSIDE CHAIRMAN
Riverside has been crowned Social Landlord of the Year for the second time in succession. The Speke-based housing association was recognised for performing well in tenant and resident involvement, promoting safe and secure communities, tackling antisocial behaviour, homelessness and social exclusion, and its commitment to local employment opportunities. Riverside also claimed the Customer Service Award at the Housing Excellence Awards, seeing off competition from South Essex Homes, Guinness Midsummer Partnership with Connaught, Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust, Northwards Housing and Bolton at Home. Riverside chairman, Professor John Tarn, commented: “Winning Social Landlord of the Year last year was particularly special as it was our 80th anniversary. This year we have undergone a successful amalgamation and rebrand, so to win the title again, and pick up the Customer Service Award, is icing on the cake.” Chief executive Deborah Shackleton added: “The awards are testament, not only to all our hard working and dedicated staff, but also our tenants and residents who work with us to continuously help us to improve our service.”
The new four bedroom detached homes have an open plan kitchen and dining area, and the master bedroom comes with en-suite faciltiies. Part exchange and shared equity schemes are available on the properties and the housebuilder is also offering redundancy cover with a free, three-year income protection plan for all buyers. Michaela Lancaster, sales director for Gladedale North West, said: “There is currently
an Oxston showhome open for visitors to Canterbury Fields that has attracted high levels of interest. We have now released just four new properties for sale, in a variety of styles, and we expect them to sell out quickly due to high demand for this type of home.” For more information on the different house styles and incentives at Canterbury Fields contact the sales advisor on 01744 453 897 or visit www.gladedale.com.

//// YOUR VIEWS ON BIG ISSUES
“Yes. Whilst these issues are unacceptable, they can be addressed. What would be worse is a knee jerk reaction at the polls that leaves us with a party we don’t really want in power, but which is appointed through votes cast in anger rather than proper utilization of our hard won democratic rights.”
From expenses to secrecy… Can the political parties overcome their differences to create a better system? We ask whether, after recent scandals’ exposure, have we now got a once in a generation, genuine opportunity to change politics in this country for the better?
Have your say at yourmovemagazine.com/forum
“Perhaps. With speedier communication networks, increased transparency seems more feasible than ever, but society is more complex and these politicians are human beings after all! An opportunity to revise protocols and bodies is good in itself, however notions and understanding of privacy and surveillance has entered a new era with social media like Facebook and Twitter reflecting a generational difference towards privacy itself.”
“No. The expenses scandal is an embarrassment to every MP and it is fascinating to watch them falling over to repay their misappropriated funds. The integrity of many has been irreparably damaged and they may well face deselection by their parties. At the next general election the electorate has the opportunity to vote against the traditional parties but I have no great belief that politics in this country will change as a result.”
“There will be a sea change - the absence of transparency in the spending of public monies for personal use has been laid bare for all to see. This should be the case also in respect of poiltical party funding. It is of paramount importance that rules and regulations are now put in place in order to ensure that a new culture of transparency is a sine quo non of political activities in the UK.”
“Yes, we have to move forwards now and I think that some fundamental changes will have to be made - this witch hunt has had some very positive results. It’s wrong that MPs think they can just pay the money back and everything will be fine. Being able to write a cheque for £50k or whatever just shows how far they’ve been milking the system, and for how long.”

The director John Arrowsmith, Liverpool Residential Lettings John Arrowsmith, director at Liverpool Residential Lettings set up the business with a friend from his school days in order to provide tenants and landlords with a personal service incorporating lettings, sales and mortgages. How did you get into property? Members of my family had invested in property so this gave me an early interest in the industry. I left school at 16 and began my career working at Penny Lane Financial Services. I started there doing administration and spent over five years learning the ropes. I also took the CeMAP (certificate in mortgage advice and practice) and became more involved with the business.

How has your career progressed? I met up with my old school friend, Matt whose background was in lettings. Mine was in mortgages so we began talking about working together. We were both ambitious and felt that forming our own business would be better in the long-term. That was a couple of years ago and since then the business has gone from strength to strength to become more profitable. What do you have planned for your summer hols? I’m escaping to Orlando in Florida in three weeks’ time and can’t wait. We’ll definitely visit Disney Land! I love theme parks so I will probably turn into a big kid. It’ll be great to get away from it all, catch some rays and just chill out!

Movers How is the ground floor laid out? As you enter there’s a hallway with a wooden floor, a downstairs WC and a kitchen/ dining area. Take us upstairs... When you come up the carpeted stairs there’s a living room to your left, a bedroom with a Juliet balcony, a bathroom in the middle of the floor, and patio doors leading to a decked area outside. On the second floor there is the master bedroom, a shower room and a third bedroom. All of the bedrooms are doubles. How is the kitchen laid out? It has a lino floor, with beecheffect cabinets. I’ve just had my washing machine installed and I have a glass table with four chairs from Next to put in the dining area.
different definitely appealed to us. The spare bedroom on the top floor has got a slanted roof and window, which is another interesting feature.
Sarah Melder, a commercial director at a Liverpool chocolate supplier, lived in Quebec Quay for the last six months, after moving to the area from Norfolk. Sarah, 38 and husband Kevin, 30, are now renting a threestorey property in the eco-friendly Green Brow development in Everton.
Tell us about the living room...
What is the design of the house like? It’s quite a quirky property. When you get onto the decking area you’ve come up a flight of stairs but it’s only on the ground level. I suppose when you enter the house you’re in the basement, which was quite disorientating at first, but the fact that the house is a little bit
At the moment everything is magnolia. I intend to paint the walls white and replace the laminate flooring with white tongue and groove. We’ve got a white TV unit from IKEA, which will fill the whole of the wall. I’m also bringing my bright lime green sofa from DFS.
What would be your dream buy? That would have to be a hot tub on the deck. I just can’t convince my husband that it’s a good idea at the moment - in fact I haven’t been able to convince him for the last four years!
What’s your favourite item in the house? I have a stunning 6ft long 4ft deep picture of a naked lady lying on a set of cushions, which I had commissioned in our previous place. I’ve also got an artist friend who creates various positions of men and women with lines. We have a few of those pieces up the hall staircase. At the moment the large picture is in the second bedroom but it will probably end up in our bedroom. What do you plan to do with the bedrooms? We haven’t been able to find the wardrobes we want for the master bedroom yet, but we intend to decorate it in cream and brown. The spare room on the top floor will have a single bed, black glass desk for the computer and a black cupboard. The other bedroom will probably have a pink theme.
Tell us about the outside area... Each property in the development has a decked area outside. Ours is about 4ft and it’s a nice feature. I’m just looking forward to bringing up some of my plants to give it a bit more life.

Interview by Jonathan Kearney
“None of us ever thought d l this cou l be a rea areer. c Top ner When it ed spin ck first ki off we t s were ju having .” a laugh
What was it like playing at Nation again? I was really excited about it. We’d been expecting that whole week to be good. John Digweed and I were doing a tour of three UK shows (Cream at Nation in Liverpool on 22 May, Godskitchen at Air in Birmingham on 23 May, and Victoria Works Warehouse in Leeds on 24 May) and Cream was the highlight of that because it’s a while since we’ve been there. It felt like a bit of a homecoming.
Do you enjoy coming up to Liverpool? I love coming to Liverpool. Over the years I’ve made so many friends in the city. I haven’t seen most of them for quite a while so it was great to meet up with a few of them. How does Creamfields compare to other festivals? The Liverpool crowd are so up for it. You always receive a really warm reception. I was worried we weren’t going to be able make it this year because we’re scheduled to headline the
South West Four festival on 29 August. I’m really happy we were able to work something out. Whose work impresses you at the moment? I love the French producer Rone and I think Guy Gerber’s stuff sounds amazing. Pig & Dan are producing some amazing re-mixes, which are the backbone of my set at the moment. You’ve been included in the top 10 of DJ Magazine’s best DJ poll every year since 1997, achieving first place in 2000. Did you ever expect to reach such heights? None of us ever thought this could be a real career! When it first kicked off we were just having a laugh. Now we’ve all got managers and agents and that sort of thing. I’ve had an amazing journey throughout the last few years. It’s not often people have the opportunity to do something they really love as a career. And I believe you owe it all to taking piano lessons? Yes, my stepmother made me take lessons when I was younger. I hated it at the time but it has definitely helped with the composition of my music and making sure I am in key. How does today’s dance scene compare to the era of The Hacienda and Shelly’s Laserdome? It’s changed considerably over the years. When the scene first exploded it was an underground phenomenon, very much a social movement. Now it’s more of a professional situation, which you can make a career out of. There are definitely aspects of the old days that I miss, but now I’m getting to tour the world and I’m getting paid for it. What’s your all-time favourite venue? The Hacienda. That place taught me everything about DJing. I used to arrive early to soak it all in. I loved listening to the first three
hours. You got to hear all the brand new music that nobody had listened to before. I loved how the DJs would manipulate the room. The whole experience taught me the basics. Who’s the biggest talent you’ve worked with? There have been so many talented DJs throughout my career - John Digweed to name just one. As producers go Charlie May is an absolute studio genius. He’s getting ready to launch a solo project which everyone in the industry is really pleased with because he’s been in the shadows for quite a while.

Sasha will appear at Creamfields on 30 August. The festival, in Daresbury, Cheshire, will take place over the August bank holiday, and feature Tiesto, David Guetta, Basement Jaxx, Calvin Harris and Dizzee Rascal. Weekend camping tickets are available from £110, and day tickets from £58.50. To purchase tickets contact 0844 888 4401, or visit www.creamfields.com. Your Move 39

//// GOT AN INTERIOR DESIGN DILEMMA? EMAIL US AT POST@MOVEPUBLISHING.CO.UK
Panelled privacy My Victorian property is really overlooked from the road. I need privacy as my living room is at the front of the house. I can’t bear blinds or nets and don’t want to lose light. Can you suggest a solution to the problem which will still look attractive?
With over 10 years experience in the interior design business, Sharon Armor is poised to answer all your design queries from DIY disasters to decorating dilemmas.
Have you thought about using a screen? Elaborate fretwork screens are completely on trend this season, with the Eastern Moroccan influence inspiring designers. The screens or fretwork panels can be positioned directly onto the windows in your living room. This would give you the privacy that you desire whist allowing the sunshine to come flooding in. They also add another dimension to the room.
An urban oasis I love the idea of a hammock but have no trees in my small town garden to hang one from. Do you know of any alternatives I could use? Ideally I’d like to create the perfect garden room! As more of us choose to live in the city, designers are producing creations suited to this new urban lifestyle. Marks & Spencer have a great collection of outdoor furniture this season and the hammock on a stand, which they are selling at £299 could be the perfect solution to your dilemma. The padded hammock is suspended from a sleek looking hardwood stand. The stand is bowed creating a sculptural element which would look fantastic in a small garden. This piece is ideal for sun worshippers or for a perfect, chilled summer evening.
Specialised solution Unfortunately when we moved into our new home we managed to break part of the stained glass in the front door and the lead lights are bent. Do you know where we could have it repaired? Quick links Jali www.jali.co.uk Marks and Spencer www.marksandspencer.com
You need to contact a specialist. The internet could be a really good source of information for this. Graham Charlesworth who is based in Chorley may be able to help, his number is 01257 230101.

CALM makes waves at Liverpool gigs JULIETTE LEWIS PERFORMING
CALM’s involvement with Liverpool SoundCity’s music festival has been a great success for the charity. The Campaign Against Living Miserably used mobile phones to capture the festival, which took place over the May Bank Holiday. In partnership with Creative Universe, a production company formed from the Liverpool Culture Company, CALM used their “VIY
revolution” to conduct interviews during the event. CALM ambassador Claire Anstey commented: “The whole concept behind the VIY revolution is to empower the audience to share their experience of the festival, from their perspective. Using simple technology like shooting a quick two-minute video on a mobile phone, anybody can have their
say on what they thought of the event. We’re encouraging the audience to get creative and upload their own gig reviews, thoughts on the state of the live music scene, interviews and so on.” CALM was the official charity partner of Liverpool Sound City, which featured acts such as Juliette Lewis, The Zutons and Black Lips.
“Like Everton we make every effort to be a winning team, always providing the highest standard of service.”
Sutton Kersh’s sparkling sale £92,000 was made at Sutton Kersh’s diamond auction at the Crowne Plaza in Speke. Thirty-six late entries boosted the number of lots to 142, with a total recommended retail value of almost £1m. Lot 22, a 4.66-carat solitaire diamond, clasped to an 18-carat white gold band, was the star of the catalogue, selling for £10,600. The next I Bid Diamonds Auction will take place on Thursday 25 June, following the Sutton Kersh property auction. For more information, visit www.suttonkersh.co.uk, or call 0151 207 6315.

Green Days //// GARDEN AND OUTDOOR SPACE
The height of summer Sunflowers make a fun addition to your garden. Why not give each family member their own to look after and see whose grows highest over the summer months? To start, plant a seed about 1.5cm deep in a small pot of compost. Keep warm by placing a plastic bottle cut in half over the pot. When leaves begin to appear, and the plant looks sturdy enough to handle, plant in the sunniest part of the garden and water well.
Urn it
//// GARDEN MUST HAVE
Magis doghouse, £465, Utility, 0151 708 4192
The gentle sound of water flowing into your pond creates a calm and soothing atmosphere in the garden. Creating a water feature with a terracotta urn can also help fish and other pond life thrive and attract interesting insects to the garden. Attach a hose to a water pump and thread through a drilled hole in the base of the urn. Place the urn on pebbles and shells in the corner of the pond and be sure to disguise the pump and the flex. Turn on at the mains to test the water flow. Top tip – Surround the feature with plants and pebbles to create a natural finish.

Recycling plastic bags and bottles is top of the list for every ecofriendly household, but recent news reports have drawn attention to the hygiene risks associated with re-using certain items. Recent news reports have found that plastic soft drinks bottles contain a chemical BPA, classified as toxic in some countries although approved by the European Food Safety Authority, which can seep into the liquid inside. If a polycarbonate bottle (such as that used to feed babies is warmed or washed) the chemical seepage is actually increased. The message here then has to be to reduce your use of plastic bottles: buy a stainless steel flask to take to work or the gym, and drink from a glass or mug whenever possible. You’ll safeguard your health as well as the environment. Canadian researchers found that supermarket shoppers have been re-using plastic ‘Bags for Life’ but have cited concern about the possible transference of bacteria when bags are used for a number of purposes other than shopping, such as for dirty sports kits and laundry. While research is in its infancy, it would seem that the end of the throwaway culture brings new territory for being green and clean. Wipe your ‘Bags for Life’ once a week on the outside at least, by wiping them with hot soapy water after washing the dishes.

Table Talk //// LUCY OLIVER INTERVIEWS PAUL RICE AT LAS IGUANAS, LIVERPOOL ONE
“Our lettings staff are well trained and we have access to a very good legal team and support when we need it”
Las Iguanas is a vibrant addition to the Liverpool One terrace of restaurants and bars. With a pavement café feel outside and a colourful, Brazilian take on its interiors, the restaurant also hosts parties and musical events upstairs overlooking Chavasse Park. When Paul Rice, director of Belvoir Lettings in the city centre, joins me for lunch, we find ourselves seated in a booth against a backdrop of Rio and bamboo canes. It’s almost a year since Paul opened the new Belvoir office on Cheapside, to complement the West Derby branch run by Adam Rastall, his business partner and schoolfriend. With Adam and his team recently achieving full ARLA accreditation and the city centre not too far behind, the brand’s profile in Liverpool’s city centre and suburbs is certainly on the up. For Paul, whose background is in warehousing, property has always interested him and it was a matter of finding the right opportunity:“It was Adam who suggested I go in with him on the business, and from that one conversation I
couldn’t have dreamed how far we’d travel in just two years.” The prominent city centre location is rapidly becoming established, and Paul expects to take on new lettings staff over coming months: “We chose the Cheapside site as some other letting agents are very well established there. With the Belvoir brand, our lettings staff are well trained and we have access to a very good legal team and support when we need it, which makes us unique.” Las Iguanas offers a tapas menu as well as a special starter and main combination for lunch and early evening, to which you can add a glass of selected wine, a bottle of beer or soft drink for an extra £1.50. Over totopos, tortilla chips served with paprika, cumin, coriander and soured cream, it becomes clear that the spice and variety offered within the property sector is central to its appeal for Paul: “Ultimately, I’d like to do more refurbishments and renovations of property and go into the buy-to-let side of the business. We already offer an in-house service to find
contractors, decorators, plumbers and Gas Safe registered fitters, and we can fully manage a property for landlords or simply supply a tenant-finding service.” The main course arrives; Paul’s enchilada with spiced chicken, sweet bell peppers and cheese is served on a bed of garlic coriander rice and refried black beans. I opt for the Xinxim; Brazilian lime chicken in a creamy crayfish and peanut sauce, served with rice, fine green beans and sweet plantain. A small dish of coconut farofa (toasted manioc flour) arrives on the side and, sprinkled onto the curry, adds crunch and texture to the well-flavoured meal. Paul continues: “We need landlords based in the city centre, as we have tenants waiting for properties, and we’re offering referral fees to current landlords who can find us contracts in this area. With Belvoir now operating four branches across Merseyside, our aim is to become the number one letting agent in the region which, given our single focus, training and experience is not,
I hope, unrealistic.” Come the Liverpool central office’s first birthday in July, it’s fair to say that a worthy celebration will be in order.
For more information about becoming a landlord or on renting a property in Liverpool city centre, telephone Belvoir Lettings on 0151 231 1613. For the West Derby branch, telephone 0151 256 0880.
Las Iguanas Liverpool ONE 14 Paradise Street T: 0151 709 4030

Highlight: Happy hour at the bar runs from 12pm to 9pm with £3.50 off selected wines and two for one on selected cocktails and pitchers. Hair Liverpool CHIGNON BY TONI&GUY
Chignon Buns and up dos are massively popular at the moment. As the most experienced person in our long hair department, I am constantly asked for new ways to create that killer up do to give our clients the edge whatever their occasion. But be warned! Regular readers of this column will know my feelings on “Top knots!” Long hair up done badly can be the king of naff, so keep it current by incorporating key elements from this season. This seasons Trends Think old school Hollywood, Veronica Lake waves mixed with equestrian chic and you’re getting the idea. Recently at fashion week we channelled this backstage into lots of pony tails buns and playfull braids. Keep buns messy and minimalistic. Make French Pleats hap hazard and you ll never look like you’ve tried too hard. Bad hair day? Bad hair days are genuinely a thing of the past. We have such a massive choice of products these days that we need never look like we haven’t bothered again. My saviour on ‘flat’ days lately is Resurrection Style Dust, a fibrous powder which reactivates styles giving added texture. You can then style as normal or backcomb the crown and clip the nape area up for a bardot feel. This is flying off the shelves- particularly to busy working mums like myself!

//// STREET FASHION
On a balmy day in early summer, Your Move's fashion scouts visited Liverpool One to photograph some of the city's most impressive outfits against a backdrop of tempting high street stores. Faye Hughes, 24 hairdresser at Wonderland Hair, West Kirby
Alexandra Kelly, 15 student at Bridgewater High School Who is your fashion icon? Alexa Chung as she really pulls off ‘geek chic’ which matches her quirky personality. She wears trends like festival fashion so well with colourful Hunter wellies and floral dresses.
What are your favourite Liverpool One stores? Pull and Bear is great as there’s a bit of everything there. I also love Urban Outfitters as it has really quirky pieces and focuses on vintage cool.
Alexandra has paired up an assortment of items from high street to high end by opting for jacket and pumps from Primark, jeans from River Island with a unique pink top from the sale in Reiss and Vivienne Westwood Earrings.
Faye steps out in a look combining funky style with an edge. Faye has chosen her outfit from Zara, Faith and American Apparel.
Stephanie Weeder, 18 sales assistant at All Saints
Paul Clarke, 27 civil servant
The showstopping item from Stephanie’s outfit has to be her long, waterfall effect cardigan, worn casually with cowboy boots, paisley shoulder bag and oversized necklace.
We tracked Paul down as he was heading into Cult Clothing. His simple but stylish ensemble really catches the eye with T-shirt and shades bought from Taiwan on eBay and trainers from Diesel.
Which Liverpool One store would you choose for a shopping spree? I work in All Saints and tend to spend part of my paycheck there as it’s top of my list. Their knitwear is definitely my weakness!
What are your ‘can’t live without’ items? I couldn’t live without denim jeans and graphic T-shirts; they really are my summer essentials! I prefer GStar Raw and Diesel as they have the look I’m going for. Kanye West always looks cool and is a snappy dresser, he’s also on my iPod!
Chris Walker, 21 student at John Moores University studying Japanese
Alex Sturgess, 19 student at John Moores University studying Japanese
Chris’s bold footwear really stood out from the crowd. He purchased the shoes at Office and khaki cargo pants are from Pull and Bear. He prefers to have his hair styled at Voodoo on Bold Street.
We spoke to Alex as he chilled out in the sun on the roof terrace after shopping in Liverpool One. His laid back approach is emphasized with checked shirt layered over logo t-shirt and must have summer shades. He styles his own platinum shade hair.
Which are your favourite stores? I always go back to Topman and Pull and Bear as they have great clothes. Office is great too as they have high top trainers and Converse!
Which labels do you prefer? I like Bench but on the whole I prefer to just mix it up and not be too focused on specific labels. Your Move 59

Food and Drink //// HARBOURSIDE DELIGHTS IN THE CITY
Go Fish
Other great places to eat, inspired by the waterside:
Jonathan Kearney tries harbour side dining at the Liverpool Marina LIVERPOOL MARINA BAR & GRILL Coburg Wharf, Sefton Street, Liverpool L3 4BP 0151 707 6888 www.liverpoolmarina.com
Set in the pleasant Coburg Wharf community, the Liverpool Marina Bar & Grill offers something of a rarity in the city. Its opulent location lends itself to haute cuisine and high prices, yet the Marina is run without pretension. Moored yachts sway gently beneath its terraced area and wedding parties take the opportunity to capture their happy moments aside a piece of Liverpool’s maritime history. Within this setting, the venue offers good hearty fare at inexpensive prices. It serves the kind of satisfying helpings you would seek after a jaunt on the high seas and the atmosphere evokes Liverpool’s legendarily warm seafaring character, rather than that of a trendy wine bar. The offering is akin to that of an ambitious pub menu. The crucial qualification to that is, unlike many of its pub counterparts, it carries it off so well. All of the food was delicious and in ample supply. My partner Hayley started with the garlic bread and pine nuts, while I opted for the Thai fish cakes and sweet chilli sauce. To draw upon the pub parallel again, I naively selected a
similar dish from a country hostelry some weeks previously. Before they had encountered my offended taste buds, those fish cakes had evidently spent the majority of their life in the ready meal aisle of the local supermarket. The helping at the Marina bore no comparison and, with the ideal marriage of the sweet chilli sauce, set the standard for a quality meal. The garlic bread was equally appetising. For a simple accompaniment that so often falls flat, it was delivered with real care, with the pine nuts a welcome addition. To follow, we enjoyed the linguine, served with mushroom, spinach leaves, cherry tomatoes, rocket and parmesan, and the 8oz rump steak with chips, with the meat cooked perfectly to order. The main course was accompanied by a crisp Chenin blanc. Although relatively simple dishes, their composition wasn’t taken for granted. Indeed, few aspects of the business are overlooked by the current Marina management. Breakfast functions continue to draw in the business community and, with the
popularity of the facilities, wedding parties are unlikely to be able to book the venue any weekend in the near future. Two-for-one meal offers maintain a steady flow of custom throughout the week and the waterside venue also boasts the best Sunday carvery this side of the river. The service, an oft understated component of the dining experience, was beyond reproach. The staff were polite and friendly, but never overly fussy. A sufficient pause in proceedings was granted before each ample course, setting us up nicely for our delightful deserts. Wisely, Hayley made the refreshing choice of strawberries and cream, which were juicy and served in abundance. I tried the passion cake, a rich feast of carrot and banana, which proved another generous serving and the most unusual and agreeable component of the meal. Our entire selection, including the bottle of white, was secured for around £40. There can be few venues that offer such value for money in a setting of Liverpool Marina’s calibre.

Imaginary exploits Roger McGough’s translation of Moliere’s ‘The Hypochondriac’ arrives at Liverpool Playhouse. Following last year's critically acclaimed ‘Tartuffe’ at the Liverpool Playhouse, Roger McGough turns prose into verse with Molière's last play ‘The Hypochondriac’ - a scathing lampoon on imaginary maladies and the 'quack' medical profession which strikes a note with today’s ‘online diagnosis mentality’. This co-production with English Touring Theatre is directed by Everyman and
Playhouse artistic director Gemma Bodinetz, and the cast includes Clive Francis as Argan, the wealthy gent convinced he is ill, and Neil Caple as doctor Diaforius. The older man’s obsession with tonics to improve his health leads him to run up enormous bills, to the point whereby he decides to marry off his daughter to a doctor – sending young Angelique, who is in love with Cleante, into turmoil. Fortunately, gutsy maid Toinette is on her mistress’s side, and she disguises herself as a doctor asking to see Argan before attempting to convince him that there’s nothing wrong with him and asking Argan to pretend to be dead to see who is really looking out for his interests – his new wife or his daughter. Verdict? Catch the Hypochondriac at the Liverpool Playhouse from 19 June until 11 July before it tours the UK, for a prescription of clever writing, strong performances and a healthy dose of humour.
Post-punk soundtrack Awaydays kicks off at FACT on Bold Street. The late-70s setting of this new film, with a pulsating soundtrack including Joy Division, The Cure, Magazine, Echo & The Bunnymen and Ultravox is reason enough to tempt many a music-loving film-goer, but the writing and
Don’t miss this poetic masterpiece by one of Liverpool’s most famous sons.
strong performances make this compelling a film which addresses the nature of male longings and belonging in a changing society. The football casual fashion cult, which is so often associated with our city, also comes under the spotlight
in this film, set as it is at the beginning of the sportswear as fashion era. (If you enjoyed Fashion Vs Sport at the Walker Art Gallery then you may well find the styling of this film through-provoking.) Carty, played by Nicky Bell, becomes infatuated with The Pack – the most ruthless gang of football hooligans in the north – for their androgynous hairstyles and box-fresh Adidas and then he meets Elvis, their leader, at an Echo & The Bunnymen gig. Their new friendship opens up a new world of big journeys and future plans in a way he could never have imagined, but which is the real Elvis: tough pack leader or dreamy idealist? And what will happen at the next away day?
Live music in Liverpool
This season sees the Summer Pops festival arrive at the Liverpool Arena, with regulars Jools Holland (24 July) and Australian Pink Floyd (1 August) joined by the nostalgic sounds of The Pet Shop Boys (13 July) and The Pogues (15 July). Veteran singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen (14 July) will also be a highlight for many, with the programme of concerts beginning at the start of the July. Over at the O2 Academy, Jack Penate (14 June), and Aswad (17 July) will showcase more of an alternative offering, while girl group The Saturdays (29 June) and country legend Dolly Parton (21 July) are sure to attract the crowds to the Liverpool Empire.
Verdict? This 104 minute film is being shown at FACT on Bold Street. Your Move 63

//// REBECCA RYAN - ACTRESS
Rebecca Ryan, star of six series of TV’s ‘Shameless’, will be making her stage debut in ‘Lost Monsters’ at the Liverpool Everyman – a poetic and quirky new drama by Laurence Wilson, directed by Gemma Bodinetz, and also starring Joe McGann. Rebecca and the rest of the cast will be performing in ‘Lost Monsters’ from Friday 22 May until Saturday 13 June at the Liverpool Everyman.
Film My favourite film has to be ‘Moulin Rouge’ as all the songs are absolutely brilliant - I love musicals - or it could be ‘Stand by Me’. It’s a tough one! TV show I absolutely love ‘Desperate Housewives’ as all the characters are great in different ways. Gabrielle has some really funny storylines though, so she might be my favourite. Actor Johnny Depp, definitely. I love him in Sweeney Todd – that’s something people seem to love or hate but I think it’s just brilliant. I also really like the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Actress Felicity Huffman who plays Lynnette in Desperate Housewives. She’s been in loads of films and she’s really, really good. Holiday destination I’ve been to Turkey a few times with my family and really enjoyed it. It’s a great place to just relax and chill out. Restaurant I haven’t had the chance to go out in Liverpool yet to eat as we’ve been rehearsing until pretty late, but I’m looking forward to it. I’ve heard the food at the Everyman Bistro is really good.
70 Your Move
Band This is hard to answer as I love all types of music. It’s quite sad but I really like Westlife and have done since I was really young. I also like The Arctic Monkeys, Snow Patrol, and also Beyonce and some R ‘n’ B – a good mix really. Gig The best gig I’ve been to would be Stevie Wonder at the M.E.N earlier this year. He was brilliant. I’ve been to T4 on the Beach a couple of times and really enjoyed it, and I’d like to go to some more festivals. Album That’s hard as I like listening to so many different types of music, and I don’t always like all the songs by one artist, but at the moment I think it would be James Morrison. I saw him at the Apollo in Manchester recently and he was brilliant. Item of clothing Shoes definitely, especially by Kurt Geiger. I love really big heels to make me look taller!
