SSAR

Having an interview with Maya Nassar international fitness model champion, fitness entrepreneur, certified specialist in sports nutrition and personal training. We learned about her great transformation, successful sports career, and determined way to reach the heights.

Why did you decide to choose fitness as a career goal and main hobby for yourself? Several years back I was extremely unhealthy and did not take care of myself, as a result, I gain a lot of weight to the point that I became overweight. I was fed up with being unhealthy and insecure so I decided to do something about this. After changing my diet and starting going to the gym I lost all the weight, plus more. This new lifestyle made me extremely happy, healthy, confident and fit. I developed a huge passion for fitness and decided that I wanted this to be my full-time career. I have a passion for helping other people and it was extremely rewarding to help others achieve the same goals that I did by sharing my story to inspire them. What skills according to you are necessary to become a successful athlete? I think discipline and dedication. You have to set challenging goals and take steps to achieve them. You need to train very hard to be in your best shape and never skip a training session. Your diet is also extremely important. Finally, a successful athlete needs to have a good attitude. Sometimes you may win and sometimes you will lose. An athlete should see losing as a chance to improve and to get better. We learn from our mistakes and this is our opportunity to do better next time. There is no doubt that you have already helped a lot of people to lose weight, get their ideal shape and reach new heights in fitness. But who and which things were your inspiration? My source of inspiration came from a bodybuilder named Tom Venuto who wrote a book that I read which really changed my life. I was very inspired by the author’s story and wanted to reach the same goals that he did. Aside from this, I am inspired by my kids and want to set an example, encourage them to do sports. Taking care of myself also means that I will stay in shape and will hopefully play with my grandchildren one day without anyone else’s help.

You are also an international fitness model champion. Tell us how did you get THERE? After losing weight and becoming healthy, I wanted to set a more challenging goal and this was to start competing internationally. I wanted to go from being too insecure to walk on the beach to stepping on stage in my best ever shape. It took a lot of hard work and preparation as these competitions do not exist in Lebanon and I did not have all the specialized trainers. I researched and did my best to start. At my first competition, I did not win. Instead of giving up, I learned as much as I could and said that I would try again a year later, but will come back stronger. I learned from my mistakes and knew what I should do differently. The next year, I ended up winning first place and I have been competing ever since. Say something about your background? How did you discover your true interest in life? I am very multicultural. I was born in the United States and have a Dutch mother and a Lebanese father. I grew up in Nigeria and have also lived in England and in Lebanon. I believe that because I have been exposed to different cultures, this has made me humble and helped me to appreciate people who are different from myself. Your background plays a role in your interests and helps you discover your passions. And the last but not the least question about the future. Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years? I hope to see myself as a successful business owner and mother with a healthy balance between my work and my family. I am currently pregnant with my third child, a baby girl and have plans to open a third branch for my gym. I also have an online shop where I sell online coaching and will soon sell e-books for pregnant women to help them stay in shape during their pregnancies. I also hope to expand on my online platform so that I can reach even more people and help them live a healthier lifestyle.

BEAUTYTRENDS of THIS SUMMER PASTEL EYE SHADOW An off-season product you are the most aspire to get in the spring. Now it’s a perfect time to wear such shadows. At least for a live broadcast in Zoom or a photo on your Instagram. Case in point: Models at Oscar de la Renta, Alice + Olivia, Ulla Johnson, and Jonathan Simkhai all hit the catwalk in dreamy washes of mint, peach, powder blue, lilac, and lemon.

STRUCTURED BROWS The hunt for trendy eyebrows is still ongoing! Do you remember the bushy, unkempt brows of years past? Welp, that’s over. Instead of “I woke up like this” brows, the trendiest brow for 2020 is structured, strong, and polished. Get the look and keep all your hairs in place using a brow gel.

12

BLUSH-PINK MAKEUP For those who prefer subtle over shiny, 2020 has something to show you: soft, fresh-faced looks enhanced by a sweep of blush. This season, makeup artists advise using natural blush colors. There is only one rule everything should be as natural as possible. On your cheeks, eyes, and lips. The trend colors are pale pink, peach or tea shades. They are ideal for any type of appearance.

MICRO FRENCH MANIS Get inspired by a micro French manicure as another idea to wear French nails in a bold way, this trend comes out of minimalism, which is all the rage right now. Many fashion shows have already presented this trend. “It’s all about making the line as fine as possible and using an ultra-sheer nude,” as nail artist Betina Goldstein told at the backstage of the Khaite show.

The new Concept-EP Alièn transmutes the reality into a vision, while the sounds merge present and future matter. A point of view about the world taken for granted, which lost its roots. The Singer/Songwriter/Composer Francesca Monte gives herself up to a superior power, exploring her inner self. Alièn is a journey through space and time and the remotest places of our soul. Alièn is composed by Francesca Monte with the precious contribution of Tremila, who took care of the album’s artwork and lettering. This EP is accompanied by a short film directed by Paolo Hanzo, that mixes visual arts with fashion design: the costumes are unique and designed by emerging artists coming from Italy and the UK (Istituto Marangoni London). Ermes De Cristofaro took care of Francesca’s image, paying attention to every detail, choosing sustainable fashion and focusing on gender-fluid outfits. Precious is the contribution of Tremila, creator of the album’s cover art and lettering. Martino Prendini is responsible for the short film’s illustrations and 2D animations. Fabrizio Todisco is the creative manager and location manager for the short-film.

Karizza photokarizza.com

Karizza is a former model, successful fashion photographer and a modeling coach who gave us an interview about her steps in the fashion industry. Described professional plans for the development of her agency. And revealed the part of her passions in a world of fashion.

28

Tell us about yourself. Why did you decide to choose a career in the fashion industry? Well, I have always been an artistic soul. It took quite a long time to find myself in this big world. I tried myself in so many fields but I always knew that I want to be connected to the Fashion and modeling world. I was dreaming to become a model but at the time I was not good enough according to model standards and it helped me to create my individual style and prove that there are things much more important than just appearance. I started modeling in Italy as I was noticed for my creative posing style, later on, I tried myself as a makeup artist and was working with many top photographers in Ukraine and Russia. By then my head was full of different creative ideas and projects but photographers couldn’t express it the way I felt it so I decided to start doing shootings by myself. In the first year of my career, I started to work with celebrities and was published in XXL, so this is a super short version of my successes. What is your favorite subject to photograph? I love to shoot fashion and fairytales full of symbolic meanings. For me photography is not just a beautiful picture, as to me, it is an art in which everybody can find some answers or personal meaning. Each time I shoot I deeply fall in love with my model, I see the spirit and inner power so it helps me to create a masterpiece. I am happy when my clients say that after the shooting they feel so confident and beautiful more than ever before and that’s because I really love what I am doing. Why did you decide to move and what it was like to gain publicity as a photographer in the States?

In Ukraine I always felt like I don’t have enough space, I felt like a tiger in the cage. I need freedom for my crazy ideas and art, in Ukraine, it is difficult to do something without being judged but in the USA I found my freedom and New York always was my main destination. As long as I always try to find new ways how to help people with art, my path brought me to the Plus size community and its mission inspired me to do something special and embrace the self-love. As a person who was struggling with selfacceptance and eating disorders, I wanted to help people over the world to feel beautiful and needed. I am happy that most of my projects with plus size influencers went viral worldwide and I am proud to say that I am pretty known in the community around the world. I am happy that my art can inspire ladies to love themself more and stay confident. Now I work with big brands and top models of the industry worldwide. You were on both sides of the camera. Which role is closer to you? A model or a photographer? It is different sides of one coin. I love both of those processes! When I am shooting, I can open someone’s hidden features and embrace them. When I am modeling so I can reveal my energy, I would say that modeling can work as a session with a psychologist, but of course only if the photographer is passionate about his work and knows what he is doing. We are never able to see ourself from aside and mirror not always a good helper because it is proved that we see what we mentally expect to see in the mirror but not the way other people see us, so shooting helps to see yourself with eyes of other person and it is pure magic. I love modeling because I can be whoever I want and change characters like an actress.

29

We heard that now you’ve set up your modeling school. Could you tell us more about your inspiration? As a person who was on both sides of the camera and passed through all steps to get to the photography and coaching, I decided to create my unique modeling classes based on psychology and helping people not just in learning how to pose but to find their personal superpower, individual style, boost confidence and develop new skills to become a professional model and just to live a better life! Tell me, what distinguishes your modeling school from the others? In my school the first place takes personality. I don’t take big groups and I don’t accept people who don’t know what they want. My aim is to help students to change their lives and find their individual path to reach their goals. My classes are really unique as I invested there 15 years of my experience from different fields and I am super proud of my program. Nowadays we don’t have time for “History of modeling” and such useless things because everything is changing so fast and we need useful skills which can be used right now. In my classes we don’t talk about modeling, we have 90% of practice and useful techniques that help models to upgrade and develop modeling skills

30

to implement all of this knowledge in work and daily life now and here. People all over the world come to take my classes and say that they are changing their lives and actually this inspires me to move forward and create more and more different programs teaming up with top models, stylists, makeup artists, model agencies and designers. Do you plan to develop a powerful agency? I plan to create a platform and space worldwide where people who want to develop can get everything that they need to express themselves, get useful skills from the tops of the industry, find connections and get places and tools to practice and make their ideas come true. What are your plans for further development of your business idea? We wish you luck! Thank you so much! Now everybody is going to move everything online and of course, I realize that future is there but as a perfectionist, I am never in rush to follow what other people do so that’s why I and my team brainstormed for a while and now we are almost ready to present some game-changing programs which really can become one of a kind.

Fashion trends of 2020 Summer season

THE LEATHER COAT The Matrix fashion moment – autumn/winter 2020 saw leather absolutely everywhere (leggings, skirts, jackets, suits) and nowhere more prominently than in the form of the leather coat. If you want to channel a traditional Neo, look to Erdem, Fendi, Ferragamo, Gabriela Hearst, Khaite or Miu Miu, opt for color at Preen and Prada or embrace more modern fluid shapes at Stella McCartney.

DENIM TOTAL LOOK Denim does not want to lean back: next summer, designers advise wearing denim jackets on a naked body, as well as combining denim with denim of the same shade. 32

BLACK AND WHITE GEOMETRY

RED AND FUCHSIA DRESSES

Black and white geometry in the form of stripes and polka dot of several sizes in one set was seen on the shows Sacai, Dries Van Noten, Chanel, Max Mara, and many other brands, so take note now.

Evening fashion is more dramatic than ever. If you plan to go to social events this spring and summer, be sure to choose outfits in the color of rubies, scarlet Maquis or dazzlingly bright fuchsia. 33

Fashion industry undergoes changes as well as searching for new emerging brands comes in an unusual manner. Instagram is helping the industry to discover under-the-radar fashion brands. We will tell you about the European fashion brand that we liked the most.

44

Les Coyotes de Paris is an Amsterdam based design studio with an international approach to fashion. This Amsterdam-based brand might have started as a line for teenage girls, but since it added womenswear to the roster a couple of years ago it’s been gaining serious ground for its timeless eclecticism and art-world aesthetic. Grown-up but not boring, shop for everyday basics and classics with a serious twist - think silver metallic trousers and exaggerated shoulder knits. Through Founder and Creative Director Marieke Meulendijks interest in photography, contemporary art, architecture and people, the story began by creating purely on emotion. The collections are defined by Marieke’s signature handwriting and attention to detail and quality. She emphasizes on tailoring and an eclectic use. Each collection is characterized by re-invented iconic shapes, twisted into modern silhouettes.

Diana Sirokai Diana Sirokai is a plus-size model, body-positive activist, influencer and just an incredible personality! Diana will tell us about self-love, her path to success and will give us a dose of inspiration to believe in ourselves!

Photographer: Karizza @photo_karizza

46

Why did you choose to pursue a career as a model? It has always been my passion to help women find selflove and I’ve always loved the camera. I thought if I can make it to a billboard, women like me would feel inspired and represented. Looking back, do you remember the moment when you realized that you’re popular? Yes! When I started getting recognized in different countries. I remember walking in time square and some people run up to me to tell me how much I inspire them and they love my work. Can you name a photoshoot or a project that made you famous? I would definitely say it was the recreation I shot with my favorite photographer Karizza. We recreated a photo of Kim Kardashian to show we are both women with different bodies and just as beautiful. It went super viral all around the world. What do you think has affected your Instagram subscribers, you’ve already got over a million!? I believe it’s the self-love inspiration. I always try to keep it as real as possible with my followers and show them different moments of my life. I have an amazing life but I am also a human and I struggle sometimes. I talk about my anxiety and the different struggles I face in life. Next to all the glamorous photos I also post natural ones and I try to show different sides of me so they can relate and I can show that they are not alone. What is your greatest strength, as a model? It’s definitely my CONFIDENCE. Confidence is my power. What is your greatest weakness, as a model? What are you doing to improve on it? I always aim for more. Sometimes I need to stop and realize that I am doing a great job and I should appreciate my success instead of always thinking of the next thing I could do.

47

48

What are the best designers you want to work with? What fashion shows to take part in? I’ve always been a huge fan of GUCCI so I hope one day I will be able to work with them. As to your opinion how the plus-size industry is developing, what’s influencing it nowadays? The plus-size industry has definitely changed and grown so much. I feel really proud to be a part of it. I just believe the modeling industry should represent more sizes and more diversity. It’s not only size 0 and plus. We are all different and unique so we all deserve to be represented. Do you plan to continue your career as a plus-size model in the future? How do you think you’re helping a plus-size model industry? Yes, I do. I will always represent women’s empowerment and self-love. In the future, I will also like to move onto acting and represent the same thing in movies. Acting has always been a dream of mine from a very young age so I will work very hard to achieve it.

Tell us about yourself: Why do you want to work as a model? Why are you interested in this career? I started modeling as a hobby on the side at first — I found that I really enjoyed the creative aspect of collaborating with photographers to make images that looked like art, especially when they involved unique editorial makeup looks and high fashion styles. It was fun, and eventually when I started booking more and more paid shoots with bigger brands, I quit my job as an editor and journalist to pursue it full time. Each modeling job can be so different, it’s always interesting. I still feel like I’m learning new things with each new gig. And another reason I decided to pursue it was because there are few Asian models in the industry — I’ve had young women reach out to me and express that they felt inspired to see someone who looked like them working and succeeding. Representation matters! I never saw Asian models when I was growing up, so I didn’t even consider it as a possibility What did you dream of becoming when you were a child? My childhood dream was actually to become a poet! I quickly realized that poetry isn’t exactly a lucrative career, however. It’s still something I enjoy reading and writing, but as a hobby. I also held some editor positions at poetry journals in the past in school. What was your first proposal for an advertising shoot? What was the product and how did the process go? My first commercial shoot was for DKNY (I played a fangirl of Emily Ratajkowski). My first commercial lead role was for a tea brand. I think I applied on Backstage and had to submit a self-taped audition. The director liked my video and the shoot itself was straightforward and fun. We shot in a few different locations around Manhattan, including a yoga studio and inside a car.

51

How did your career in New York begin? I started commercial acting on the side for fun in the fall of 2017, and started modeling in the spring of 2018. I quit my job of 4 years at BuzzFeed by summer of 2018 when my bookings had really begun picking up and I couldn’t maintain a full-time job while also running to shoots and castings constantly. Talking about your career as an actress have you ever played roles that you didn’t like at all? Not naming any names, but yes, I have played roles I disliked. I enjoy being challenged, so I dislike roles where my character isn’t complex or doesn’t grow much. It gets boring falling into the same character over and over when they haven’t changed or learned anything about themselves. How and when did you decide to become an actor? What did you start to do for this? I began auditioning for commercial acting roles in fall 2017, and TV/film roles in 2019. I did some theatre in school, and always really loved acting. I decided to start as a hobby because it seemed like it would be fun to get back into. There are a lot of things that need to be prepared in the beginning: getting headshots, putting together a resume and video reel, joining casting sites, possibly getting an acting coach or taking acting classes. It takes time to get started. The more work you put in and do, the more work you can get in the future.

Fashion’s #MeToo movement. You took part in it because this topic is closed for you? I walked in a #MeToo themed NYFW show in 2018 because earlier that year I had gotten stalked and harassed by a stranger who I had to file a police report against. It was a really scary time in my life where I had to have someone escort me from my office into a car home. Taking part in the show and openly talking about the experience felt like taking back some of my power and control in a very powerless situation. It was important to me to stand up for the movement alongside other inspiring survivors of harassment and abuse. .What keeps you inspired and moving forward in your profession? What keeps me moving forward is knowing that I am showing and inspiring young Asian women who look like me that they too can pursue a career in entertainment (or in any industry they want). Again, I didn’t know this career was an option for me in childhood because of the lack of Asian representation. Fortunately, these days the industry has begun to change but we still have a long way to go. I want to be a part of fighting for that change. What advice can you give to aspiring models and actresses on the path to success? My advice is to think deeply about what you really want, and if you find that acting/modeling is truly it, then commit to putting in the work. And then work even harder. Push yourself every day. This industry isn’t rewarding for most people, for a long time, and it definitely won’t be rewarding for anyone whose heart isn’t in it. I also believe in the importance of building up your brand, because it helps in many industries and especially in entertainment, so taking the time to grow your social media presence and find exposure can be helpful in the long run. Learn what makes you unique and then use that to market yourself. You don’t want to look like everyone else — that’s forgettable. Embrace your quirks — that’s how you stand out.

yani.k.a

YANA DODINA Yana is an incredibly well-rounded girl. Her blog will serve as an excellent guide to Vienna, while educational masterclasses organized and managed by the girl will turn your free time into a fulfilling pastime.

-Before moving to Vienna, you lived, studied and worked in Minsk. What was the hardest thing about moving? It may sound strange but the acceptance of the fact of the move itself. In Minsk, I had everything family, my favorite job (I am a TV journalist), many hobbies. And I understood that as soon as I move, I would have to start all over again. The older we are, the more difficult it is for us to change something in life. Thus many fears show up and the main thing here is to cope with these fears then it will be much easier. -Tell us about your first impressions of life in Vienna? What turned out to be the toughest for you? I had time to get used to Vienna before moving. My husband is from there, we met at a distance, so we constantly went to each other. At one point, I was in Vienna every two weeks. So I started to work remotely in a Viennese Russian-language magazine. The most difficult part of the first month of life here was socialization. Social networks helped a lot: I found out about various events taking place in the city, later took part in the show of a Russian designer living in Vienna. I started to attend an intensive German language course. And with time I made a lot of friends! -How long does it take to live in a new country to feel comfortable, like at home? It depends on the person and his perception. You can live in a new country for two weeks and decide that you know everything about it, or you can live there for 20 years and finally understand that you do not know a thing... -Share the recipe for a happy life in emigration. I would say that it is the ability to adapt to the mentality of local people. You also need to know at least the language base, in this case, German. And the attitude towards you will be different immediately! Even if you will speak with the mistakes local people will greatly appreciate your efforts. 54

-Describe Vienna in one sentence. What is the city like? «Vienna is a decoration city: you wander along its streets and feel like a hero of novels from the mid-19th century! ” -What, in your opinion, is the most exclusive place to spend the evening in the capital? Well, Vienna has not only luxurious baroque palaces, gorgeous parks, and Gothic churches, but is also full of extraordinary places to dine. In my blog on Instagram where I write about Vienna and its unique spots. You can find my posts about restaurants using this hashtag #yanikafoodblog! I would like to recommend some amazing «must visit» places in Vienna: «The Sign cocktail lounge» - amazing bar with a wonderful selection of different but fantastic and original cocktails. “Burggasse 24” - youth cafe with an original design that resembles a grandmother’s apartment. “Salm Bräu” is a brewery and restaurant, an exquisite place where the very walls are imbued with history and Austrian traditions!

-Your son Maximilian was born in Vienna? How has your life changed since this happy event? Yes, Max was born in Vienna. Life has changed tremendously when I moved, and when my son was born, it changed radically! Maternity leave is a wonderful chance to reveal oneself! I tried myself in some incredible beginnings such as jewelry creation, started my blog about Austria, organized educational events for Russianspeaking residents of Vienna. People often ask, where do I find time and energy? It seems to me that love can work miracles. If it is in your heart and in the hearts of dearest people, this is the best motivation to become better! -What main advice would you give to a person who also wants to move to another country, but has not yet decided? First, let the person ask himself a few questions: “Why do I want to move? For what? What are my goals?” If there are answers to all these questions, then it’s worth the risk! The mistake of many is that they believe that living somewhere is much better than at home. The grass is always greener on the other side. But if you have a goal, motivation, and faith in your strength, then everything will work out! 55

Everyone are common in beliefs that such a situation prompted them think even more creative, make interesting collaboration and look for unusual tools to create. Two New York based girls are from different cities but sharing work background in the fashion industry and the same aim for the future. Anna Natochi and Anna Sitnikova are the founders of Women’s Club The Vmeste thevmesteclub and Trivia games IMOM’S imoms.nyc, talk about the arrangement of their quizzes and the peculiarities of the club.

ANNA & ANNA SITNIKOVA NATOCHI Photographer: Anna Ferra @newfacesny

How did you start? What is your background? Anna Natochi: I moved to New York 8 years ago. It was time, believe it or not, before Instagram. Life was much harder without it. I was in the fashion industry back in Kiev and was dreaming about building a career in the same field. So I started working as a Fashion Buyer and got a Master’s Degree in Fashion Merchandising and Retail Management. Then something just happened and I found myself being a freelancer in Marketing and Events. Plans are changing and this is a beauty of life. Anna Sitnikova: Back in my college years I was dreaming about having my own agency. I used to live in Moscow and was working in the fashion and event industries for five years. I organized fashion shows and catwalks for fashion weeks, charity dinners, movie premieres, we worked a lot with celebrities and the best Media channels in Moscow. I also helped in developing sport marketing in Russia. And two years ago I moved to the USA. Thanks to all the experience I had before it was easier to start my own business here in New York. What projects have already been implemented within the community? AS: A year ago I realized that there are no home style events for girls where they could come and talk about anything. First I organized a series of such events at my apartment and invited different speakers from beauty, fashion, business and psychology fields. These events always lasted much longer than was announced — everyone kept talking and networking. So all of us — guests, speakers and me — we became not just friends, we found professional partners for different collaborations. My guests were so grateful and I decided to take the next step — start organizing bigger events for women. Then we met with Anna and decided to work together. Both of us are strong in communications and gave great experience in events — it was a perfect match.

AN: I was a journalist and had a fashion blog back in Ukraine. And when I moved to New York, I started missing writing. I didn’t speak English, and no one needed my writing on Russian. On the other hand, I didn’t want to create just a regular blog about immigrant’s life in the USA. So I came up with the idea to launch a digital platform publishing interviews with successful Russian-speaking women. I didn’t plan to do this project as a commercial one, it was “just for fun”. Somehow, it worked out and now we have a Digital Magazine, Women’s Club and Marketing Agency for women owned businesses. All under one name —The Vmeste.

Let’s talk about Trivia games IMOM’S. How did you come up with the idea? Could you tell us about the overall concept? AN: I was already organizing events for women for a few years at that point. And we were getting comments like “Oh, I’d love to join, but I have a baby to stay with…” pretty often. We are immigrants and most of us don’t have all family members and big support here. So, I realized that we really need some project with events where our guests could come with children. And guess what, just a few months later, Anna called me and we met for coffee… AS: IMOM’S Trivia games is an amazing opportunity for every girl, and especially mothers, to have a good 3 hours rest with other women. Our games aren’t just quiz games like other trivia clubs in New York. We create real celebration experience with a big show program: Dj, host, gifts, photo and video coverage. There’s always much more besides interesting women’s questions on logic, erudition, intuition. It’s an amazing experience for the whole family: a child plays with other children and the animators in a separate room while mothers are playing. And fathers can do whatever they need meanwhile. So far we organized just six games and each had up to 80 guests. How did you decide to establish a Women Club? Could you tell us the story behind this idea? AN: It was really organically. AS: We both were already organizing a lot of events for women, working with some women owned businesses and the Women’s Club was just a next step to get all this more organized. What features of your club sets it apart from other clubs? AN: Basically, we don’t really have competitors. I love this project because it’s almost unique. There are some other similar projects, but they are much smaller and not consistent. We organize at least one event per week which is really often for such a limited community. Also, we have a personal discount card for each member. They receive discounted pricing and special offers from our business partners.

66

AS: The same is with IMOM’S — there are few Russian-speaking quiz games in New York. But none of them is for women only, none of them accepts children during the events and no one else has so many gifts and entertainment as we do. Please tell us about Membership. How many different plans do you offer? What are the benefits and advantages of being a member? AS: We decided to organize it in the simplest way, so no one is getting confused. We offer a 3, 6 and 12 months subscription plans. Members with a year-long membership have the lowest prices per event, they can bring a friend once per month, promote their own business or service via our community. AN: Recently we added 2 new plans. A package of 10 events for member’s choice and membership for online events — such as webinars, marathons, etc. This way we are planning on attracting women from outside New York. What kind women are members of the Club? And can anyone get there? AN: All our events from the very first one are organized in Manhattan. We managed to attract many business owners, entrepreneurs, bloggers and influencers. When this kind of people gather together — you can feel it in the air. This level of inspiration is hard to recreate. We are very proud of our crowd. AS: Almost everyone, yes. We have some soft restrictions by age, but other than that everyone is free to join. Our main goal is to create a big strong community with the space for growth, inspiration and support for each other. How is club life organized? AS: We keep in touch with our members not like organizers, but like friends. We really care about each other and build that kind of relationship where we help each other and aren’t afraid to ask for advice. We have a Telegram channel with open dialogues and useful information.

What kind of events do you organize? AN: We always have a plan of our events at least a month ahead. We cover different areas of life: business, self-development, creativity. We are trying to invite the best speakers to participate, so we can give our guests really valuable information. What are your plans for the future? Do you want to open your projects outside of New York? AN: Yes, back in January I already spent a month in Miami working on opening our projects there. We believe that each city needs a community like this. AS: There are so many Russian-speaking women who move to the USA without friends. Everyone needs some support, inspiration and an opportunity to learn something new. We are planning to cover New York, Miami and Los Angeles, and for other cities we will be offering franchises soon. What could you advise for finding success? AS: Don’t be afraid of anything. Go straight ahead and be confident. If not alone then with a reliable partner. AN: Work on yourself first, then — on your projects and daily routine. Get your mind on the right path, work on selfdevelopment and keep yourself happy — as much as possible.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH National Debts Spiralling Out Of Control By Angelina Kali International fashion model, Journalist, TV Reporter and Social Media Influencer angelina_kali

As a response to the economic damage done by the containment measures to limit the spread of Covid-19, governments throughout the world have enacted massive stimulus packages to safeguard jobs and to hinder a complete economic collapse. The US has so far approved rescue packages in excess of $4.5 trillion. Yes, it is trillion with a capital “T”. That equates to around 20% of the US Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The UK has so far announced about £65 billion in aid packages that will likely exceed £100 billion in 2020 or between 3-5% of GDP. Similar sizeable measures have been enacted by many western nations.

68

This is completely understandable as the current situation is akin to a wartime situation. Already millions have been made unemployed and without fiscal stimulus support, there is a real risk of total collapse of the global economy with forecasted unemployment rising to well into the hundreds of millions globally. In the US so far, already over 22 million have registered for unemployment benefits in 3 weeks and that’s just at the beginning of lockdowns in the US whilst the death toll keeps mounting. Everyone is clamouring for support from the unemployed, the gig-economy, small businesses and even massive corporations such as international airlines. Even with these stimulus packages, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have forecasted that the Covid-19 pandemic will have a $4 trillion hit on the global economy. There is one thing that most people seem to overlook and that is the mounting national debts. Nobody seems to question how governments suddenly can afford these massive fiscal spending sprees. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, most governments had until recently been tightening their budgets through austerity measures to get their budgets and national debts under control. No longer. US debt is set to exceed 100% of GDP. Italy already had a debt to GDP ratio of around 135% even before the pandemic and it is set to shoot upwards in light of the fiscal stimulus packages needed to stave off a complete meltdown of the Italian economy. At some point in time, all this debt has to be repaid or at least serviced in order to prevent bankruptcy. Or governments can keep printing more money either physically or through quantative easing (QE). Many already warn of the debt levels and some even go as far as calling western currencies as “fiat currencies based on the notion of Ponzi schemes. That is that governments need to borrow more money to pay their existing debtors and this just gets repeated over and over again.

69

But at some point, confidence will evaporate and investors will demand higher and higher interest rates to buy the debt until it becomes unattainable. There are several recent cases of this with Venezuela and Zimbabwe being prime examples with million percent inflation. When Greece needed a bailout from the IMF and the ECB, its debt was around 127% of GDP. The fiscal tightening that were imposed by its lenders has led to mass unemployment of around 26% and a contraction of its GDP by 25%. The fallout of the Greek debt crisis was contained due to its relatively small size of its debt at Euro 320 billion as well as fairly solid finances of the Eurozone countries. However, all this has changed due to the costs of the lockdowns. There is no real appetite by the moral fiscally prudent northern European countries to keep bailing out the less fiscally prudent southern European countries. With the wealthier countries having had to balloon their own national debts, they are in a much weaker position to come to the aid of vulnerable economies such as Italy or Spain which have been amongst the hardest affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Pre-lockdown national debt of Italy stood at around 138% of GDP, which is even much higher than the levels when Greece couldn’t repay its creditors. Who knows what the debt levels will be after the stimulus packages but it will certainly exceed 150% of GDP. What makes Italy so worrisome is the nominal amount of its debt pile currently totalling 2.44 trillion. Whilst Italy has sought a Covid-19 Eurobond whereby these bonds would be guaranteed by all 27 European Union member states, the Netherlands have at least for now halted those efforts. Without ECB guarantees, there is mounting concerns of how Italy will be able to manage its debt repayments, especially considering that its budget deficit for 2020 was already forecast to be around 5% before the Covid-19 pandemic. The risk of an Italian

70

default has risen exponentially. The impact of this event would be catastrophic for the Eurozone in particular and the global financial system in general. If Spain joined Italy in defaulting on its 1.5 trillion debt, it is difficult to see how the global financial system could limit the financial fallout of such an event. But with debt to GDP at close to 100% before Covid-19, this will rise sharply in the coming months due to the necessary fiscal stimulus packages to stave off an economic meltdown in Spain. And we haven’t even considered Greece’s situation yet with a debt to GDP ratio of nearly 180%. The fiscal stimulus packages will limit the economic damage of the Covid-19 pandemic in the short term. But there might be an even greater long term cost. The rising national debts will have to be maintained through increased portion of budgets being used to manage the debt mountains which leaves less for other government spending. There will have to be fiscal tightening so austerity will return with a bang. But the real problem is if inflation takes hold which will lead to rising interest rates. This is a real possibility due to the massive money printing programmes since the 2008 financial crisis which will continue for the foreseeable future. That will exacerbate the problem with maintaining not only national debts but also the massive personal debts. We may have averted a global economic meltdown for now, but the future is now even more uncertain. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a free lunch! Someone always have to pay.

Why you must visit Belgium

on your next European trip

Off the beaten path in spite of its geographical position between the countries of Germany, France, and the Netherlands, Belgium is a delightful place to experience western European culture, history, and tradition. Home to a collection of impossibly picturesque suspended-in-time medieval towns and cities Belgium actually offers some of the most beautiful – and romantic – city breaks in Europe. That’s also not forgetting its cosmopolitan capital Brussels, the pockets of truly beautiful countryside and of course its world-famous beer production. All of these you will be able to enjoy by visiting a small town Dinant, located 1 hour by train from Brussels - a true picture-postcard town set between a dramatic cliff and the river. This under-the-radar beautiful gem of a city sits on the banks of the river Meuse in Belgium’s Walloon region. The picturesque town is backed by a spectacular sheer cliff face and protected by the ancient fortified citadel and the city’s historic buildings are steeped in legend as you walk through the narrow streets you will definitely feel the spirit of a city with so many stories to tell. Probably this place is the most famous because of the birth of Adolphe Sax, the man who invented the Saxophone whose house you can now visit. Foodies don’t miss a chance to try the delicious Flamiche (a bit like a Tarte Flambe) or Couques de Dinant which are delicious brittle honey biscuits.
