SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES The yellow brick road beckons once again. As Oz the Great and the Powerful whisks viewers on the most scintillating adventure in Oz to date, Cheyenne Campbell investigates the enduring appeal of this fantastical phenomenon
>> MArch > April
D
orothy dancing down the Yellow Brick road in her ruby slippers, with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, cowardly lion and a little dog named Toto, is so ingrained in our culture - but they’re not all l. Frank Baum’s source material had to offer about the land of Oz. While the 1939 film based on the American fairy tale is such a part of childhood and our imagination thanks to its memorable songs and themes of innocence and belief, it’s not just the Kansas farm girl’s quest to return home that’s kept audiences wanting to visit to Oz again and again. Since the 1939 film is the best-known and most beloved adaptation of Baum’s 1900 novel, it would be impossible not to compare it with any subsequent returns to the world of munchkins and flying monkeys. With director Sam raimi’s re-imagined, eyepopping vision in ‘Oz the Great and powerful’, however, Dorothy Gale is nowhere to be seen, and this might make the greater comparison then-for die-hard fans of Baum’s creation-with that of the stage musical ‘Wicked’. Based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, ‘Wicked: The life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’, this stage version is a similar venture into Oz focusing on the events leading up to Dorothy’s arrival rather than Dorothy herself. Other adaptations that have
come down the pipeline over the years range from retellings of Dorothy’s story, as in the Broadway show ‘The Wiz’ (which later became a film starring Diana ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow), to sequels pulling inspiration from Baum’s many follow-up novels, such as Disney’s 1985 live-action film ‘return to Oz’. While ‘Wicked’ focused on Glinda and Elphaba (the Good Witch and Wicked Witch of the West, respectively) and the events that led to each accepting their assigned reputations and opposing roles, raimi’s new film sets out to tell the story of an unscrupulous circus magician called Oscar Diggs and how he became the Wizard of Oz. What made the original film’s connection with audiences one of wide-eyed wonder and nostalgia was undoubtedly down to Dorothy’s point of view. A lonely, young orphaned girl growing up on a farm with a little dog as her best friend, Dorothy was a character to whom children and adults alike could sympathise. Audiences experienced the fish-out-of-water journey in a strange land through the innocent, untravelled girl’s eyes. Whereas ‘Wicked’ took the emphasis away from an everyman character and gave audiences the witches’ side of the story, raimi’s prequel to Dorothy’s tale brings the focus back to an outsider venturing in. As Dorothy found herself lost and overwhelmed in Oz, despite his dubious character
traits, Oscar Diggs winds up there with the same naivety that allowed audiences to be enchanted with Oz in the first place. innocence and unworldliness of the main characters aside, however, you can’t argue that these latest stories based in Oz aren’t getting darker in tone, though much more colourful in imagining. With every new version, the visuals become more outrageous and arresting. Just as the famous slippers Baum described as silver were turned to ruby red in order to ‘pop’ on the screen when the scenes turned to colour, each new trip to Oz has looked for ways to enhance the story’s vibrancy in its own way. production designer robert Stromberg is on board, firmly cementing his niche in mouthwatering, knock-you-out-of-yourseat visuals, just as he did in ‘Avatar’ and Tim Burton’s ‘Alice
FEATURE
in Wonderland’ (with which this film is being repeatedly compared, both visually and story-wise). James Franco plays the young Kansas illusionist who, in homage to the original film (expect to see nods to the classic throughout), is depicted in black and white at the story’s start. Once whisked away to the magical land via balloon, cGi and luminescent colours take over as Diggs is introduced to Oz’s three witches, and finds himself at the centre of the land’s great unrest. Glinda, Theodora and Evanora (Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and rachel Weisz) are the trio of beautiful witches Diggs encounters. Suddenly he finds himself reluctantly drawn into Oz’s darkest hour, but also an opportunity to better himselfif he can be the man the land needs him to be by conjuring up his ‘powers’. The film is being presented as a story of transformation, with the notion that given a chance to become great, an under-handed trickster might rise to the challenge to prove he’s more than meets the eye, and more than he believes himself to be. While the 1939 film might be a far cry from the otherworldly cGi characters and splashy sets of raimi’s prequel, the two films share one important humanising trait: both Dorothy and Diggs come to learn that what they needed most has been within them all along. Oz the Great and Powerful is released on 8th March

8 Most horror fans will hold the original 1980’s Evil Dead movies in high regard. The first film was initially (and understandably) banned. The scene involving an overly adventurous tree still has the power to disgust, and it looks as though that scene has been reshot for this promising looking remake. The story is familiar - five friends stay in a remote cabin and unwittingly unleash demons, zombies and all manner of evil from the woods that surround the cabin. If you’ve been curious whether the mind behind sparkly vampires was simply a one-story wonder, look no further. Versatile actress Saoirse Ronan (Atonement, Hanna) stars as 21-year-old Melanie Stryder, one of the last humans on earth. For years she’s evaded the Soulsaliens controlling the planet by infiltrating host bodies of humans and erasing their memories. When Melanie’s caught and infected by the parasitic Soul called Wanderer, she fights to remain aware and awake within her own body, in order to track down her family and her love Jared who are hiding out amongst a rebel group of survivors. Melanie and Wanderer (“Wanda”) coexist in Melanie’s body, and the two bond as Wanda begins to feel sympathy towards the humans’ plight through Melanie’s memories. Once Wanda/Melanie return to the survivors’ hideout, however, the connection between Wanda and her host causes friction among the humans, not to mention an awkward love triangle (but you knew there’d be one of those, didn’t you?). 8 We’ve seen a fair number of retold fairytales hit the big screen in the last few years and in March we’ll be treated to another re-imagining of a classic in the form of Jack the Giant Slayer. Expanding on the original story, the film takes the concept of Jack evading and eventually killing the giant and widens it to include a host of giants. This time Jack opens the gateway to the home of the giants and allows them to return to the world they once controlled. An ancient war between the giants and humans begins again and Jack sets out to end the conflict. Director Bryan Singer (known for his work on the X-men franchise) takes the reigns of Jack the Giant Slayer, bringing his talent for fantasy action to the role. Some familiar names stand out in the cast which includes Ewan McGregor, ian McShane and Bill Nighy as the leader of the giants. Jack the Giant Slayer stands to be a refreshing new take on the classic folk tale that will surely offer an action packed ride this spring. Kit Goodliffe

8 Michael Winterbottom, director of The Killer inside Me and 24 hour party people, presents the true story of Soho adult magazine entrepreneur paul raymond. raymond became one of the richest men in Britain, but with this wealth (as well as an abundance of sex and drugs) came the collapse of his marriage and family. The film’s plot sees Steve coogan play paul raymond, a 20th century legend who became known as the “King Of Soho”, the film’s original title. he began his career in show business with a nude review, featuring tableaux (think Mrs henderson presents...), and then moved into publishing with a series of rather racy magazines. Some extremely good investments later, and he was a major property owner in Soho and a force to be reckoned with. The film focuses on the women in his life as well as his highly interesting career. Similar in tone to the Steve coogan-starring 24 hour party people, expect debauchery in every sense of the word, and look out for appearances by none other than Stephen Fry, David Walliams and chris Addison, and many others. 8 Only the second film from the director of the spectacular TrON: legacy, Oblivion looks set to be an awesome masterpiece. Boasting some mind-boggling special effects, edge-of-your-seat action and impressive star power (Tom cruise and Morgan Freeman for starters) this is going to be one sci-fi ready to become a classic. in an apocalyptic future, one of the few remaining drone repairmen (Tom cruise) is sent back to Earth, where the surface has been devastated after decades of war with an alien race. While there, he discovers a crashed spaceship which makes him question what actually happened during the war, and his priorities change when he finds he may have to put mankind’s fate into his own hands. Shot with Sony’s newly-developed cineAlta F65 camera, Oblivion’s visuals will be hugely complementary to the advanced cGi. Thanks to this, the film’s original plot will not merely impress, but positively attack the senses in every way possible. And if you weren’t a fan of the divisive TrON: legacy, rest assured that Oblivion is also in the safe hands of the rise of the planet of the Apes producer. Matthew Brigden

THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN 8 Upon receiving sad news from a fertility clinic, a childless couple - Cindy and Jim Green - write down their wishes for an infant, which they place into a box and bury in the garden. After a bizarre and miraculous midnight storm, the couple wake to discover a young child has emerged from the ground, and the remarkable Timothy Green will teach his shocked parents more than they could ever have imagined. This unique concept behind Disney’s latest computer-animated family-friendly film was conjured by American writer Ahmet Zappa. The film itself is a rarity and boasts magical originality that has been missing from some Disney projects, who tend to leave their innovative creations to their sister studio Pixar. The Odd Life of Timothy Green looks to be a step in the right direction for the studio returning to what originally brought them acclaim. The film is directed by Peter Hedges, whose previous works include What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, About a Boy and Dan in Real Life, and he’s certainly hedged his bets and stuck with what he does best, providing charming and heartfelt family-oriented entertainment. 8 Get ready for the next big political thriller. A terrorist organisation has attacked the White House, the President has been kidnapped and it is up to disgraced presidential guard Mike Banning (Butler) to team up with American national security in order to save him. Perhaps the most intriguing part of the plot for this film is this: Mike Banning is trapped inside the White House and so must orchestrate the entire rescue from within the famous building. Luckily, Banning has incredible inside knowledge that could help save the day, overthrow a terrorist mastermind and hopefully put a stop to an even bigger threat. Olympus has Fallen has an absolutely incredible cast who have all been very successful in the action and thriller genre, and when combined with Antoine Fuqua who has directed such action epics as King Arthur and Training Day, the end result looks exciting. So if it’s an all American action thriller that you want to see this Easter, then look no further than Olympus has Fallen. Daniel Buckley

A sexually and racially charged film noir from director lee Daniels, The paperboy takes audiences deep into the backwaters of steamy 1960s South Florida, as investigative reporter Ward Jansen (Matthew Mcconaughey) and his partner Yardley Acheman (David Oyelowo) chase a sensational, career-making story. With the help of Ward’s younger brother Jack (Zac Efron) and sultry death-row groupie charlotte Bless (Nicole Kidman), the pair tries to prove violent swampdweller hillary Van Wetter (John cusack) was framed for the murder of a corrupt local sheriff. 8 Director Gus Van Sant is an unpredictable talent with work ranging from the outright awful (Psycho remake anyone?) to downright classic (Good Will Hunting). This year Gus reunites with past collaborator and A-lister Matt Damon in this dark exploration of environmental and corporate corruption. Matt Damon plays Steve Butler, a corporate salesman who is sent along with his partner, Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand), to close a key rural town in his company’s expansion plans. With the town having been hit hard by the economic decline, the two outsiders see the local citizens as likely to accept their company’s offer, for drilling rights to their properties, as much-needed relief. What seems like an easy job for the duo becomes complicated by the objection of some of the local residence. Promised Land looks set to be a dense thought provoking film with an important message that demands reflection. Exploring the act of freckling (hydraulic mineral extraction) and the moral conflictions therein, it may seem topically dry for Hollywood but the intense study of character will have more than enough twists to keep audiences engaged. ROBOT AND FRANK 8 Jake Schreier’s independently financed feature debut continues to garner acclaim from its screenings at high-profile festivals. Audiences and critics alike are praising its tenderness, endearing charm and Frank langella’s strong central performance. Set in the near future, Frank, a retired cat burglar, has two grown kids who are concerned he can no longer live alone. They are tempted to place him in a nursing home until Frank’s son chooses a different option: against the old man’s wishes, he buys Frank a walking, talking humanoid robot programmed to improve his physical and mental health. What follows is an often hilarious and somewhat heartbreaking story about finding friends and family in the most unexpected places. The film is anchored to the development of this central, heart-warming relationship between a man and his Ai companion. Not only is Schreier’s film billed as an enticing drama, but also a showcase of the juxtaposition between a grumpy old man and new age technology. robot & Frank features an award winning cast including Academy Award nominee Frank langella, James Marsden, liv Tyler and Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon.
