Truro and Penwith College The Big Picture Roxy Watson, National Diploma in Media student, looks at upcoming ‘event’ releases and how they capture the audience. Every month up to a dozen new films open at The Plaza Cinema in Truro, some come with a built in appeal to a particular audience, some build an audience through their run, and some, sadly, never find an audience. But every once in awhile a new film is so eagerly awaited that when it does finally open it becomes a real big-screen-must-see ‘Event’. Whether it’s the next much anticipated episode of a series of films, such as a new Star Wars or the latest Harry Potter, or the re-release of a musical such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show or sing-along screenings of Mamma Mia, event films bring to the cinemas a buzz like no other. There is a sense of communal expectation in the audience and an exciting theatricality that sometimes extends to the audience dressing up as characters in the film. During the time I have worked at The Plaza the Twilight Saga has made possibly the biggest impact. Tickets sell out weeks in advance and with special midnight viewings being laid on it is undeniably a ‘big event’. The audience is mostly female with each supporting their hero, either Jacob or Edward, and dressed in custom made sweaters bearing the image of their hero – and the cinema is filled with “wooooo”s,” boo”s, wolf whistles and sobs whenever their favourite appears. You could compare each film to a sporting event, with each team wearing a supporter’s T-shirt, sweater or badges, cheers and boos at the appropriate times and when the they leave the cinema either ecstatic

that their man has won the heart of Bella or disappointed when their hero loses out, but hoping that the next time the result will different. The most recent musical to get the audience enthusiastically singing and dancing in their seats was ‘Mamma Mia’. Many of the audience probably have the sing-along DVD on repeat at home and dance around their houses to the Abba songs, but it is an unbeatable cinema experience when hundreds of people together let the atmosphere take over and risk embarrassment by jumping up in their seats and singing and dancing along with cast on screen. Of course there isn’t much risk of embarrassment as everyone else is doing the same, even, I have to admit, the cinema staff who can’t resist joining in! Cinema-goers still ask us for ‘Mamma Mia’ to be rereleased just so they can enjoy that Big Screen Big Event experience. What is the next big event in store at The Plaza? Without a doubt the film everyone is looking forward to is the release of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1’ in November, one of the most impatiently awaited films of recent years. The fact that this is only the first part of the final film in the series has increased the excitement to fever pitch. When Part 2 is released next July and the Harry Potter saga finally reaches its climax I suspect we will be in for one of the biggest big event releases of all time. I’ll be there – how about you ?

8 You could excuse the English moviegoer for baulking when that deep trailer voiceover announces ‘The American’, as though the words alone should inspire awe. After all, we’re subjected to rather a lot of American patriotism in Hollywood as it is. It’s important to understand, however, that any preconceptions you have of this being another mindless action thriller are wildly misplaced. George Clooney is the said American: an assassin hiding out in a picturesque Italian village as he prepares for his final job. Despite his better judgment, he sacrifices his own safety, and that of those around him, by becoming personally involved with working girl Clara (Placido) and a local priest (Bonacelli of Midnight Express and Mission Impossible III fame). As you might expect from Anton Corbijn, the director who brought us the deliciously reticent Control, The American is a subtle, slow-burning movie that focuses on characterisation and inner turmoil rather than explosions and car chases. 8 Set against the arid backdrop of the Okavango Delta with a wildly humorous bunch of animals as its stars, this latest creature feature comes in mesmerising 3D while its voice talent reads like a who’s who of British acting and comedy talent. It’s fair to say that meerkats are having a bit of a moment - and the adulation continues here with the star of the show: Billy, a particularly mischievous member of the species. He and his best friend, Socrates the affable lion, are awaiting the annual flood, which is crucial to the Delta and its animal inhabitants. When the flood fails to come, Billy sets out on a mission to find water - and to prove himself a hero in the eyes of his son, Junior. With Socrates in tow, the pair’s journey is a colourful and revealing one; along the way, they meet a hilarious bunch of animals from across the globe who have been forced from their habitats by fire, oil spills and other manmade disasters. Peppered with a loveable cast of characters, this stirring tale combines comic and action-packed antics with a profound and universal message. Rebecca Matthews

A hidden legAcy As Tron mAkes iTs reTurn To The big screen, chris WAsey celebrATes The sci-fi phenomenon And iTs fAr-reAching impAcT on modern cinemA

8

It may not be to everyone’s tastes, but there is no denying that the scifi genre has provided some of our most memorable cinematic experiences. There are the obvious ones: Metropolis, Star Wars, Avatar. Then there are the others: seminal movies that permeated social consciousness without you even realising it, and,

in this category, none matches the 1982 computer generated epic, Tron. As the long overdue sequel-reboot, Tron Legacy, looks set to storm the Christmas box office, we should remember the impact this overlooked gem had on the world of cinema. Strangely, more people will be aware of the Tron references in shows such as South Park and The Simpsons than have actually seen the original movie. For those in that category, the story

is simple: while attempting to hack a computer system, arcade owner Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) is broken down and transported into a digital world where he is forced to compete in a series of battle games to survive. With the help of security program Tron (Bruce Boxleitner), he must destroy the evil AI, MCP (Master Control Programme), who plans to attack the Pentagon mainframe. Released a year before Return of the Jedi, Tron’s $24 million return

was rather modest compared to Lucas’s hulking giant. Like so many greats, Tron would not be appreciated in its time. A neon mix of live action and computer graphics, the gladiatorial discus and light bike events would have been breathtaking, but too visceral for an ‘80s’ audience. Put simply, the world was not yet ready to suspend disbelief for an environment realised solely by computer programming. Tron might not have been

>> NOVEMBER > DECEMBER

the concept origin of sentient machines or the dangers of man’s over reliance on technology, but it was the first to do so with high concept sensibilities and a heavyweight budget. Without MCP’s twisted assertion that he could improve military efficiency by “900-1200 times”, there would be no Skynet, no Mark Vs, no Agent Smiths. Without Tron, the landscape of modern sci-fi would be very different. Each of the film’s two stars used Tron as a springboard to carve out distinct careers. Boxleitner became a sci-fi legend in his own right, going on to play Captain Sheridan in cult favourite Babylon 5, heralded as the smartest sci-fi show of the ‘90s. Meanwhile, Bridges’ continued his career on the big screen with characters such as The Dude in The Big Lebowski and Bad Blake in Crazy Heart, garnering a reputation as the most ‘underappreciated actor in Hollywood’ for the better part of two decades. While Tron went onto create its own legacy, the inception was a

product of its time. Hollywood rode a crest of Star Wars’ inspired sci-fi love, while new PCs were bringing computer games out of the arcades and into the home. It is clear that Tron’s 8-bit style graphics are based on the wonderfully clunky games of the era, but the nods don’t end there. Look hard enough at the status screens and you might notice PacMan hidden in the corner, pause the light bike race and you can clearly see a silhouette of Mickey Mouse’s head in the landscape, and listen closely and you might hear sound effects from ‘80s arcade game, Missile Command. As Tron once reflected the 1980s’ Atari boom, now is the perfect time for the franchise’s return. The original offered an allegory for the wider world’s technological embrace, and these same cultural indicators are apparent in 2010 – one need only exchange the iconography. Atari becomes iPads: the perceived ‘future’ of home computing. Space Invaders becomes X-Box:

the symbol of a youth immersed in computer games. Star Wars becomes Avatar: the box office giant that would shape the visual palette of mainstream cinema. So perfectly does the 1982 classic dovetail into recent Hollywood trends, that its return was effectively guaranteed. Cameron’s 3D success demanded that studios consider projects with palpable visuals; Tron’s digital reality certainly fits the bill. So, too, the trend of darker, edgier sequel-reboots; ignore the horror missteps (Halloween, Friday the 13th) - sci-fi has been able to better the source material with products like Batman Begins, Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek. Tron shares most with the last on this list: a 30-year-old product still embedded in popular culture, something most young moviegoers are aware of (but have never actually seen) and still hugely popular with a geek fan base. With Star Trek, J.J. Abrams was able to appease die-hard fans, while simultaneously casting off

FEATURE

the ‘nerds only’ tag and bringing a whole new generation into the fold. In Legacy, Flynn (Bridges) is thought long gone by the real world, leaving behind a troubled son, Sam, and an arcade gathering dust. His old partner (Boxleitner) receives a coded transmission, and Sam goes to check it out. When Sam is sucked into the same digital world, he must try to save his father and escape from the programme, which has become increasingly sophisticated and dangerous over the last 25 years. Anyone who has seen the trailers will know that the ‘Star Trek approach’ has been taken. All the classic iconography is there, but with a sexy, modern makeover. The story works with the rest of the canon, rather than simply disregarding it, while the return of both original stars brings some added gravitas - more to the point, there looks set to be two Jeff Bridges, which is the best indicator yet that Tron Legacy will be amazing. Tron Legacy will be released on 17 December

8 Through the likes of Dita Von Teese and The Pussycat Dolls, burlesque has experienced something of a revival in recent years. Director Steven Antin now brings us a film on that very seductive of subjects, which has already been likened to Bob Fosse’s classic, Cabaret. Featuring singers Christina Aguilera and Cher in leading roles, Burlesque follows the trials and tribulations of Ali Rose (Aguilera), a small town girl with a big voice. Arriving in LA with dreams of hitting the big time, Ali quickly finds work as a cocktail waitress in The Burlesque Lounge, a club owned by Tess (Cher). Our heroine aspires to make the leap to the stage, assisted by a fellow dancer (Hough) and the stage manager (Tucci), all the while attracting the animosity of a dancer named Nikki (Bell) and the affections of the bartender/resident musician Jack (Gigandet). Throwing another spanner in the works is Marcus Gerber (Dane), an entrepreneur who turns up at the club with an exciting proposal for Ali. Filled with belting songs and spectacular dance routines, Burlesque promises non-stop entertainment from start to finish. Eve Backhouse

8 It’s finally time to return to the magical world of Narnia and its fantastical realms of talking animals, courageous kings and queens and mythical creatures. This time, however, the action comes in eye-popping 3D. This third installment of C.S. Lewis’s heroic fantasy series sees the return of Edmund (Keynes) and Lucy (Henley) to their roles as defenders of Narnia. Although their siblings, Peter and Susan, are absent from this story, cousin Eustace Scrubb (Poulter) joins them on their intrepid adventure. Peace has been restored to Narnia under the rule of King Caspian (Barnes). Caspian has built the first seaworthy ship seen in centuries, the Dawn Treader, and he plans to sail the ocean in search of the seven lords: noblemen who were banished by his uncle during his usurping of the throne. Joining the new Narnian King and warrior mouse Reepicheep, Edmund, Lucy and Eustace must undertake a daring mission across unchartered waters - with Narnia’s fate hanging in the balance. DUE DATE 8 After 2009’s breakout hit The Hangover left cinema goers craving for more tiger-abducting debauchery, director Todd Phillips has decided to put us all out of our misery in mouth watering fashion. Reprising his collaboration with cinema’s hottest commodity Zach Galifianakis and dragging the incomparable Robert Downey Jr. along for the ride, Phillips has served up Due Date, a road trip comedy of epic proportions. When expectant father Peter’s (Downey Jr.) travel plans go seriously awry, he is forced to hitch a lift with aspiring thespian Ethan (Galifianakis) in an effort to reach his wife Christine’s (Monaghan) side before the birth of their firstborn. Sadly for Peter, things can only get worse as the unlikely duo embark on an outrageous cross country journey that looks set to make Planes, Trains and Automobiles look like a leisurely drive. Promising to make you laugh until your face hurts and bolstered by a supporting roster bursting at the seams with Hollywood heavyweights, including Academy Award nominee Juliette Lewis, Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx and comedy golden boy Danny McBride (Pineapple Express), this is one date you really can’t afford to miss. 8 The final chapter of the hugely successful Millenium trilogy comes to a mighty close with the hotly anticipated release of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. Adapted, once again, from the novel of the same name by the late, great Stieg Larsson, Hornet’s Nest begins where the penultimate film ended: with our anti-hero, Lisbeth Salander (Rapace), being airlifted to hospital. While hospitalised, Salander is placed under close supervision, and set to face trial for three murders and one attempted murder upon her eventual release. Meanwhile, Mikael Blomkvist (Nyqvist), our ever-ready knight in shining armour, takes on the task of not only proving Lisbeth’s innocence, but also to identify and denounce the corrupt politicians at the heart of the entire scandal. The thrilling next instalment is directed once again by Daniel Alfredson, who helmed the action packed second film in the series, and promises to conclude the shrewd mystery of Lisbeth’s shady past, while also providing an experience as exhilarating as the previous two outings - if not more so. GULLIVER’S TRAVELS 8 Jack Black is back in what could be the biggest comedy of the festive season. In Rob Letterman’s first live-action film (following Shark Tale and Monsters vs Aliens), Black plays Gulliver, a mailroom clerk who winds up writing a travel piece on the Bermuda Triangle. Disaster strikes when a storm hits and he is washed up on the island of Lilliput, which is home to a population of tiny people. At first he is enslaved by the inhabitants but later becomes their hero. This reimagining of the classic story co-stars Jason Segel, Emily Blunt and comedian Billy Connolly as three of the island’s residents. Co-written by the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Shrek, Gulliver’s Travels promises to feature the brand of comedy drama with broad appeal, entertaining both the young and the young at heart. In the last few years, Jack Black has rivalled the likes of Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler as one of this generation’s comedy greats; he looks set to continue that trend with this Christmas release. 8 Harry Potter is no longer an underage wizard, restricted from using magic outside Hogwarts. This freedom is vital, as this half of the supremely anticipated finale sees Harry, Ron and Hermione in flight across the British countryside, hunting Horcruxes that hold pieces of Lord Voldemort’s soul, to destroy him once and for all. The Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts are both under Voldemort’s control, and Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson will show the depth of their characters’ fears, flaws and faith as they learn that nowhere is safe. Fans will finally see their beloved heroes away from the security of school, with Death Eaters, Snatchers and even the Dark Lord himself ever on their heels. Leaving loved ones behind without even an explanation to the Order of the Phoenix, they begin the desperate quest Dumbledore entrusted only to Harry, shortly before the Headmaster’s death. Their mission’s immense gravity and hardship will test their loyalty as they unravel Dumbledore’s clues and the mysterious Deathly Hallows. Expect not a cosy mystery in the halls of Hogwarts - but a gruelling and exhilarating race to the finish. Cheyenne Hill

But Jackass is hardly your ordinary TV series and, after two successful cinematic outings, the usual band of ineffably likeable idiots return once again with an array of new idiotic stunts for our amusement. As the title suggests, the whole shambolic affair has been documented in 3D this time, which means audiences can expect a unique twist on the usual variety of pranks and stunts as Johnny Knoxville and co. set about their business inflicting pain on one another in the name of comedy. Those familiar with the series will need no introduction. The show’s unique appeal stems from its knowingly juvenile stupidity and, when the entire cast consists of a bunch of men so set on inflicting injury on themselves and one another, it’s difficult not to warm to them. It goes without saying that Jackass is hardly high art, but if it was ever the case that self-mutilation could be viewed as an art form, then Knoxville and co. are arguably masters in their field. 8 The brains behind Cloverfield, writer and director Matt Reeves, brings viewers Let Me In, a chilling tale based on the bestselling Swedish novel ‘Lat den Ratte Komma In’ (Let the Right One In) and the highly acclaimed 2008 film of the same name. An alienated twelve-year-old Owen (Smit-McPhee) is bullied by his classmates and neglected by his divorcing parents. Painfully alone, Owen spends his days planning revenge on the classmates that make his life a misery. The only friend he has is the newcomer to his small New Mexico town: Abby (Moretz), an eerily self-possessed young girl who lives next door with her silent father (Jenkins). Recognising a fellow outcast, Owen opens up to her and the pair form a unique bond. When a string of gruesome murders puts the town on high alert, Abby’s father disappears and the terrified girl is left to fend for herself. Still, she repeatedly rebuffs Owen’s efforts to help her and her increasingly bizarre behaviour leads Owen to suspect she’s hiding an unthinkable secret. The gifted cast takes audiences straight to the troubled heart of adolescent longing and loneliness in an astonishing coming-of-age story. Amy Ralfe

8 Now that Keira Knightley has shunned any further involvement with Pirates of the Caribbean, the franchise that undoubtedly put her in the spotlight, it’s refreshing to see her take on roles other than corset-wearing, period piece heroines. Knightley co-stars with Colin Farrell in this adaptation of a Ken Bruen novel, and whether you’ve read the book or not, the chemistry these two could potentially create on screen is intriguing on its own merit. Farrell plays Mitchell, a South London ex-con whose release from prison finds him looking for more honest work, which leads him to Knightley’s Charlotte, a wealthy but reclusive young actress. As she hides out from the paparazzi and the world in her Holland Park mansion, Charlotte hires Mitchell to fill the role of bodyguard and handyman - a career change he hopes will lure him away from his gangster lifestyle. A mixture of romance, drama and crime, this marks the directorial debut of William Monahan, screenwriter of The Departed, Kingdom of Heaven, and Body of Lies. The all-star cast includes Ray Winstone as well as reallife couple David Thewlis and Anna Friel. Cheyenne Hill

Director Edward Zwick Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Oliver

8 Based on Jamie Reidy’s memoir, Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman, this sexy comedy is directed by Edward Zwick, whose previous directorial credits include The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond and Defiance. Meet Maggie (Hathaway), a carefree, good time girl who refuses to settle down - that is, until she meets Jamie (Gyllenhaal), a confident young man whose charm serves him well in the world of pharmaceuticals, as he attempts to notch up sales of a new male performance drug. As their relationship develops, so does their addiction to the one drug that is particularly hard to be weaned from: love. This heart warming and humorous drama is sure to make perfect viewing for the post-Christmas slump. The chemistry promises to sizzle between Gyllenhaal and Hathaway, who famously played a married couple in 2005’s Brokeback Mountain. And, if that hasn’t grabbed you, I’ll leave you with this: if rumours are to be believed, Jake is set to flash a generous bit of flesh. Enough said. Amy Evans

8 Following the 2004 smash hit Meet the Fockers, Paul Weitz returns with the third installment in the phenomenally successful family-themed franchise. Little Fockers will see the Byrnes and the Fockers collide once again, as Greg (Stiller) continues in his quest to gain acceptance into the Byrnes’ family circle. After ten years with wife Pam (Polo) and with two little Fockers in tow, Greg now faces the challenge of fatherhood - and is about to encounter another struggle with tightly wound father-in-law, Jack (De Niro). As the families descend for the twins’ birthday - including Pam’s ex Kevin (Wilson) - Jack’s suspicions of Greg surface once again, as the cash strapped nurse takes an additional job with a drug company. Greg must prove to sceptical Jack that he’s fully capable as the man of the house. But with all the misunderstandings, spying and covert missions, will Greg pass Jack’s final test and become the family’s next patriarch? Or will the circle of trust be broken forever? Slated for a Christmas week release, make sure you grab those presents early and lap up the antics of a family even more dysfunctional then your own. Ian Skey

8 Predominantly known for his supporting roles in films such as From Dusk Till Dawn and Con Air, Danny Trejo stars in the action-packed Machete. Directed by Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis, the film first began as one of the many fake trailers which Rodriguez directed for his 2007 Quentin Tarantino collaboration film Grindhouse. Three years later and Machete has been given the full-length treatment - and (real) trailers suggest that the film will be bigger, bolder and more badass than before. Trejo plays Machete Cortez, a former Mexican Federale turned hard as nails vigilante for justice, who is framed in an elaborate government scheme to eradicate the number of illegal immigrants living in Texas. Machete marks another movie in a long line of hits for the exploitation film genre, following the success of both Grindhouse and Scott Sanders’ US hit Black Dynamite. Boasting an impressive cast including Robert De Niro, Steven Seagal and even Lindsay Lohan, Machete might just be the Hollywood sleeper hit of the year, regardless of its origins - essential viewing for not only ardent Rodriguez fans but also action film lovers and cinefiles. MEGAMIND 8 The latest offering from Dreamworks is upon us in the form of Megamind: an alien with a baldhead, blue skin and a penchant for tight clothing. For years, super villain Megamind’s (Ferrell) attempts to conquer Metro City have been foiled by caped superhero Metro Man (Pitt). However, when Megamind finally defeats his nemesis, he finds life without a hero to fight downright boring. He decides to create Titan, Metro City’s next superhero, from lonely cameraman Hal (Hill). This, like all his plans, inevitably backfires, with Titan hell-bent on using his powers for revenge on humanity after years of rejection. After being found alive by Megamind and news reporter Roxanne (Fey), Metro Man proves unwilling to resume his role as superhero, forcing a reluctant Megamind to take on the job. Aided by his sidekick Minion (Cross), Megamind sets out to put an end to the being he created. No stranger to the animated comedy (or Dreamworks), McGrath has previously directed the immensely popular Madagascar films. This track record, together with the comedic and vocal talents of Ferrell and Pitt, is sure to pull in the crowds. Jen Evans

8 We’ve had both Cloverfield and District 9 emerge from relative obscurity to blockbuster success, and now the latest monster movie hoping to join the ranks is writer/director Gareth Edwards’ Monsters. Six years ago, a NASA probe landed in New Mexico, scattering alien contagion all over the desert. These samples of alien life promptly grew in immense numbers and turned the south of the States and north of Mexico into an alien-occupied zone. The film sees a US photographer agree to escort his boss’s daughter back across the infected zone to safety. Starring Whitney Able and Scoot McNairy, Monsters is Edwards’ big screen debut. Hailed as being the next Neil Blomkamp, Edwards’ low budget sci-fi looks set to captivate audiences in much the same way 2009’s District 9 did. Monsters isn’t about big budget effects, jump scares or even the usual horror clichés. Instead, the film focuses on the two central characters and their experiences in this new world of terror. For a fresh take on big screen monster mayhem, look no further. Ian J. Martin

8 Cinema has lately been overrun by notably poor animal-themed movies, with turgid efforts like Furry Vengeance appearing to be the best that Hollywood can offer. However, it seems that Disney has found the answer to buck the trend, and that answer lies in this true story of determination, which is pumped with traditional House of Mouse inspiration. Despite her lack of equine knowledge, Penny Chenery (Lane) defies all the odds when she takes over her dying father’s Virginia-based horse stables and manages to overturn the male-dominated horseracing business, becoming the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years - not such an easy task for a full time housewife and mother. Such a story of glory and willpower is rarely seen in creature features these days, but this film, with its theme of success against the odds, is a drama to inspire and motivate. If you want to do something different with your life - just give it a go. What really is the worst that can happen? Matthew Brigden

8 If there’s one sci-fi film you need to see this winter, it’s Skyline. From the directors of Aliens vs Predator: Requiem, this upcoming blockbuster is set to hit our cinema screens in November, with a sequel already in the pipeline. The makers of Skyline obviously have a lot of faith in the film and, on viewing the trailers, it’s easy to see why: the special effects are out of this world. The action unfolds through the eyes of a group of friends who head out for the party of their lives in Los Angeles. Early the following morning, they wake to strange beams of blue light descending upon the city - the extraterrestrials have arrived. The lights begin to draw the population of every city in the world into their ships, like moths to a flame. As war breaks out and alien ships stalk the city, the group of friends face a desperate battle for survival. Are we alone? More to the point, do we really want to find out? Justin Vingoe

Superstar Denzel Washington and Star Trek’s Chris Pine are challenged to stop the runaway train, and save an entire city from certain destruction. Washington plays content, respectable family man and veteran railroad engineer Frank Barnes, while Pine takes the role of Barnes’s newly employed hotshot trainee Will Colson. Barnes and Colson must chase down the train in another locomotive, somehow stopping the ‘missile the size of the Chrysler building’ that careers along the track, smashing through traffic and leaving destruction and chaos in its wake. With time against them, they must learn to trust one another in order to stop a catastrophe-in-the-making. From director Tony Scott, who brought us Man on Fire (2004) and Enemy of the State (1998), and with appearances from Rosario Dawson (Sin City) and the brilliant Ethan Suplee (My Name Is Earl), expect Unstoppable to be one explosive thrill ride from start to finish. THE WAY BACK 8 As some anticipate Colin Farrell scaring them witless in a revamp of Tom Holland’s classic Fright Night (1985), the actor looks set to take on a more enduring role as Valka in The Way Back, Peter Weir’s fact-based dramatisation of an epic escape. Based on the novel by Slavomir Rawicz and other soldiers’ accounts, the film is poised to tell an inspiring story of the human will to survive and the immense lengths the desire for freedom can drive one to. It is 1940. A group of multi-national prisoners plot their escape from a Russian gulag in Yakutsk - where untreated disease, chronic hunger, freezing temperatures and avoiding daily execution is considered a good day. The drama traces their 4,000 mile escape journey to freedom on foot, crossing the Siberian Arctic, the Gobi Desert and the Himalayas until finally reaching Tibet and British India. The Way Back may just be testimony to the triumph of the human spirit. It is no coincidence that this story has inspired some of the most infamous explorers in the world today. Darren L. Maciag

to the Future remains iconic. Having swept the awards season on its release in 1985, it left critics reeling, scientists yapping about the Grandfather Paradox and was even referred to by Ronald Reagan in his State of the Union address. It’s been a quarter of a century since Bob Zemeckis brought his iconic time travel romp to the big screen, with the anniversary marked with this theatrical re-release and a special edition Blu-ray boxed set. Like so many great films, it very nearly didn’t happen at all; initially rejected by all of the big studios, it was Stephen Spielberg’s involvement as producer that secured the eventual green light at Universal, with the resultant movie a lesson in tight scripting, adventurous direction, superb sound and an astonishing ensemble cast. Be prepared to delight in a modern masterpiece and remember that, where we’re going, we don’t need roads. Kingsley Marshall

GET HIM TO THE GREEK Release date 1 November Director Nicholas Stoller Starring Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, Rose Byrne From the team that brought us Superbad now comes this jocular tale of love and loss in the murky and hedonistic world of the music industry. Loosely based on Robbie Williams’ life, mega rock star Aldous Snow has just released the world’s worst album, his relationship has broken down, and he’s turned to what he knows best: getting high. Aaron Green has three days to get the wasted Snow to a sell-out comeback gig at LA’s Greek Theatre. Stalked by sociopathic record company boss Sergio, these characters gut-bustlingly carry the film with uproarious hilarity through crazy

situational sketches. While the soundtrack could be described as infantile, the classic hit Banger, Beans & Mash, performed by Brand, is genius. This film is, essentially, a parody of its cast and numerous cameos. With the recent death of one of England’s most lovable cinematic comedians Norman Wisdom - it is great to see British talent more than capable of making one laugh. Darren Maciag

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON Release date 15 November Directors Chris Sanders, Dean DeBlois Starring Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Christopher Mintz-Plasse Directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, the writer/directors of Lilo and Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon is a Dreamworks animated film based loosely on the 2003 book of the same name. The drama follows a young Viking boy called Hiccup who lives on an island beset by dragon raids. Pushed to become a dragon slayer by the rest of his clan, Hiccup finds his priorities confused when he befriends the benevolent dragon, Toothless. The story is fun, involving and enjoyable, even if it does take a little too long for a real threat to emerge for Hiccup and his new friend. The superb Dreamworks animation is supported by excellent voice acting and witty writing, making for a sweet and visually stunning adventure. Kit Goodliffe

TOY STORY 3 Release date 22 November Director Lee Unkrich Starring Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack Lee Unkrich’s third instalment of the

hugely successful Pixar animation franchise contains the usual mini heroics and comedy antics. Andy, owner of the loveable bunch of toys – Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the motley crew – inevitably grows up and is about to leave for college when the gang embark on their biggest adventure yet. After being accidently thrown out on the curb, their loyalties are tested when they chance upon a seemingly better life at Sunnyside, the toddlers day care centre. After being chewed, battered and broken, they realise that their heart still lies with Andy and begin to make the treacherous journey home. However corrupt bear, Lots-O-Huggin’, makes their trek anything but easy. As entertaining and even more moving than its predecessors, this film has a huge beating heart. It comes with an important message: that at times it is vital that we let go of the ones we love even though it breaks our heart in the process. Bryony Drewett

Release date 15 November Director Vincent Patar, Stéphane Aubier Starring Stéphane Aubier, Jeanne Balibar, Nicolas Buyusse Quite unlike any other film released this year or, in fact, any year, this stop motion animation makes like Pixar - if computers hadn’t been invented, animators were hooked on PCP and John Lasseter had been born in Belgium. Having breathed life into the poorly realised plastic detritus that kids played with in the ‘70s, the retro aesthetic championed by directors Patar and Aubier has since been filtered through the mush of TV marketers’ minds into a slew of ad campaigns. In this feature length film, Cowboy and Indian have forgotten their Horsey housemate’s birthday and, in a quick fix, order some bricks over the Internet in order to build him a barbecue. An inadvertent key press finds them over ordering, however, with the resultant madcap adventure involving the destruction of their home, the sealing of a portal to another dimension, and fighting off an invasion of some wall-thieving, sea dwelling weirdoes. Throw in a back story of equine romance, and the result is the cinematic equivalent of a truckload of Haribo – a sugary treat to revel in, which is sure to elicit plenty of laughs at its crazed simplicity.
