8 This animated 3D adventure offers a captivating and comical take on the canine class system. Stars Hayden Panettiere of Heroes fame and Justin Long, known for his roles in Die Hard 4.0, Dodgeball and Galaxy Quest, are joined by a strong supporting cast including Lethal Weapon star Danny Glover and the late Hollywood veteran Dennis Hopper. The story follows Kate and Humphrey who, despite being members of the same wolf pack, would never normally associate. Kate is an Alpha wolf and sits at the top of the pack hierarchy, while Humphrey lingers at the lowest as an Omega. Kate’s sense of discipline and duty starkly contrasts with fun-loving Humphrey’s relaxed take on life and when the two are whisked away from the pack by a park ranger they have to learn to work together to find a way home. And that’s not all. As conflict brews between two rival wolf packs back home, it is down to the duo to restore peace. Alpha and Omega promises to be a quirky and eyepleasing 3D adventure, well worth a look this October. Kit Goodliffe

8 Have you ever wanted to know how to get out of a coffin after being buried alive? Without attempting the impossible of punching through six feet of dirt with your fist, Kill Bill-style? Then Buried is the perfect film for you. It’s also essential viewing for anybody who enjoys claustrophobic fear of unbearable proportions. Ryan Reynolds plays Paul Conway, who is working in Iraq as a U.S. contractor. So far, so good. When he is subjected to a terrifying attack by a group of Iraqis he finds himself trapped inside a coffin, with his oxygen supply quickly running out and only a lighter and a cell phone to his name. So far, not so good any more. You might think that having an entire film played out inside a coffin is either a brave move, or a particularly stupid one. But with the appropriate location of wartorn Iraq and an undoubtedly realistic performance from Reynolds who’s quickly establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s finest, this film may resonate as the tensest film you’ve ever seen. THE FIRST KISS

GOODBYE

As the ultimate clash between good and evil looms on the horizon, Joe Cole investigates the penultimate installment of the Harry Potter phenomenon

8

the beginning of the end is almost upon us. on November 19th 2010, Harry potter and the Deathly Hallows: part I will sweep onto cinema screens worldwide, and potter fans everywhere will cram into auditoriums with a sense of both anticipation and sadness. this is it. After ten years of magical adventures, Daniel radcliffe and co. are about to make their final bow. Like the desert wanderer about to pour the last drop of water onto his thirsty tongue, we know we’ll have to savour every moment. concern is understandable. What if that golden droplet is tainted and leaves a bad taste in the mouth? We really don’t want our last memory of Hogwarts to be one of disappointment, do we? Well let’s step back from this fanatical frenzy for a moment and try to appreciate how important it is, not only for us, but also for the creators of the franchise that the movie doesn’t let us down. If films

such as the Golden compass, percy Jackson and eragon have taught us anything, it’s that adapting a children’s fantasy novel to the screen is a tricky business. Where they have failed, the Harry potter films have thus far been remarkably successful. In fact, they have become so synonymous with the bestselling novels that it is difficult to read the series without picturing radcliffe, emma Watson and rupert Grint in the lead roles. this did not happen by accident. ten years of hard graft has gone into making these films. ten years that, for some of the cast, represents half a lifetime. For them, the Deathly Hallows is the equivalent of the last stroke of the brush, the big exam, and the Quidditch Final all in one. there’s no way in hell they want to get it wrong. perhaps it was for this reason that director David Yates and writer steve Kloves decided to split the film into two parts (the second of which will be released next summer). Yates has pointed out, “there’s so much material in the seventh book that making two films was the best thing we could

have done to adapt it in the right way.” of course, the sceptical amongst us may point out that Warner bros will make twice the profit by releasing two films, and that splitting a story down the middle can completely screw up the narrative pace, as we saw in pirates of the caribbean 2 and 3. the value of these conjectures will be better assessed after the movies have been revealed to the public, but one thing is certain: Harry potter fans are not baulking at the idea of an extra movie. Indeed, there is a real reluctance on all sides to let the franchise go,

and splitting the Deathly Hallows into two parts, so long as it is done properly, can only be a great thing for everyone. Having directed the Half blood prince last year, Yates was the natural candidate for the forthcoming movies, as was screenwriter Kloves, who has been responsible for the adaptations since day one. there has been some controversy, however, over the decision to give score composing duties to Alexandre Desplat over fan favorite John Williams, who composed for the first three films. With a résumé that includes

>> september > october

scores for New moon, Fantastic mr. Fox and the Golden compass amongst many others, there is no doubting Desplat’s calibre as a musician, but his appointment was not enough to appease certain factions who were holding their breaths for Williams to return. the impression is that the Deathly Hallows will have a rather different feel to the other films. In keeping with J.K. rowling’s own perception of the book, Yates has tried to give part I a road trip vibe. emma Watson described what she thought of the changes: “I feel like I’m on a different film. the other films have this structure. You know, we come into the Great Hall and there’s the opening talk, and that’s just gone. It’s gone.” Indeed, a mere glimpse of the trailer reveals a completely distinct aesthetic. With roaming shots over stunning landscapes and battles in the darkest regions of forest, the movie seems to have as much in common with the Lord of the rings trilogy as it does with its predecessors. Whether or not fans will warm to this change remains unknown, but rest assured there will be enough dragons and broomsticks flying around to keep the majority of us in high spirits. If you’re one of the 400 million or so people who have read the novel, you’ll be well aware of what to expect plot-wise. We join Harry during dark times indeed, with Hogwarts and the ministry of magic in the clutches of the evil Lord Voldemort, whose power is growing by the second. our hero, with his sidekicks in tow, begins a journey Dumbledore set in motion shortly before he died to find and destroy the mysterious Horcruxes, which are key to Voldemort’s eternal life. However, with a price on Harry’s head, this is a journey from which he may never return. so this is the first kiss goodbye. back in June, after his last day on set, radcliffe confessed, “everyone was really devastated. It was really, really sad. We were crying quite a lot.” the chances are that come next summer there will be quite a few muggles doing exactly the same thing. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I is released on 19th November

8 Despite their predisposition for evil behaviour, cartoon super villains are often more approachable than their counterparts. From original animated sociopaths such as elmer Fudd and marvin the martian to the lead here, Gru, it’s difficult to think of them as evil when they are so bumbling. Gru is a criminal mastermind who has a thing for stealing large monuments, such as the Giza pyramids. but when monuments on earth get too small for him the only logical solution is to go interstellar, and Gru sets his sights on the moon. Unfortunately for Gru, a greater challenge arises when he is forced to play father to three children, but will he have time to carry out his dastardly plan if he has to look after the kids? In scintillating 3D, Despicable me is a perfect family film, blending drama and humour sophisticated enough to be enjoyed by adults with the perfect balance of vibrancy and action to capture children’s imaginations.

8 You know there’s always one person at a party you don’t want to be there? Well tim Wagner (rudd) is out to ensure that not only does that guy turn up to the party, but he’s the most idiotic and offensive of the whole night. A remake of Le Diner de cons, Dinner for schmucks is based on a company’s annual black-tie ‘Dinner for extraordinary people’, where each member competes to invite the most eccentric character for the evening. the problem for tim is that his guest of choice - barry (steve carell on top form) - is so foolish that he manages to end up stuck with tim in his apartment. A severely odd couple if you will. this might seem a daunting remake to take on given the popularity of the original. However, director Jay roach (of meet the parents and meet the Fockers brilliance) should make light work of it and it’s difficult to think of two comedians that could fill these roles more perfectly. this promises to be one of the funniest flicks of the year, and surely will keep conversation alive around any dinner table - even without schmucks. 8 ‘When the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed.’ this horror draws on the fear-spiking and utterly captivating concept of the unknown. the story centres on brothers Dane (massoglia) and Lucas (Gamble) who leave New York city for the prerequisite sleepy town in the middle of nowhere. cue the twist. their expectations of small town humdrum are superseded not only by the discovery of beautiful nextdoor neighbour-cum-love-interest, Julie (bennett), but also by the discovery of a seemingly bottomless hatch in the floor. strange things begin to happen as the boys and Julie attempt to unravel the secrets behind the terrifying and unexplainable chasm. In order to end the terror, the trio must face their deepest nightmares, as the hole somehow materialises their most deep-seated horrors, unleashing one terrorising phantasm after another. Director Joe Dante of Gremlins repute comments that, as the audience becomes immersed into the film via the 3D element, “the ride becomes darker and more intense”. Laced with teen angst and intrigue, childhood fantasy and fear, this promises to be a definite terror trip for all horror fans. Hannah May

TAMARA DREWE

FilM info FilM credits

8 Novelty isn’t commonplace within the cinematic world nowadays, but tamara Drewe can most certainly abandon the crowd. A collision of genres and forms, the story arose from posy simmonds’ comic strip first published in the Guardian and later transformed into a graphic novel. the original genesis of the cartoon was a modern reimagining of thomas Hardy’s classic Far From the madding crowd, so its literary base garners even more credibility amongst critics. Director stephen Frears delineates the draw: “the script makes me laugh, it’s very, very funny, and very sexy and a very contemporary, modern film.” In this, our homegrown leading lady of the moment, Gemma Arterton, is the pretty protagonist of force. As tamara, she returns to her small West country village as an unashamed flirt whose sexy antics stir the script as well as other regions of the local - most notably male - inhabitants. Featuring the usual modicum of english eccentricity, a colourful cast of pretentious, adulterous writers and wealthy weekenders pepper this sharp, refreshing and quintessentially british comedy. 8 Like tim burton and Johnny Depp in the fantasy genre, Adam mcKay and Will Ferrell are currently dominating the comedy genre. Films such as Anchorman and stepbrothers prove that the pair can create can’t-breathe comedy, and with an all-star cast including mark Wahlberg, samuel L. Jackson, eva mendes, michael Keaton and steve coogan, the other Guys looks set to be one of their best. Will Ferrell is Detective Allen Gamble who, unlike his name suggests, does not like to take risks and would much rather stay in the office and admire the city’s top cops Danson (Johnson) and Highsmith (Jackson). However, when a call comes in that no one else wants to touch, Allen’s partner (Wahlberg) persuades him to go out there and turn the tables. this, of course, does not quite go to plan and the pair comically crashes their way through the city in order to prove themselves. With this extensive big name cast and mcKay and Ferrell’s highly tuned comedic intuition, this latest offering is an absolute must-see. Jake Stephenson

VAMPIRES SUCK 8 For those of you that remain rather unenlightened by the twilight saga, this satire on the current vampire obsession may provide some light relief from all the blood-sucking drama. With tongues firmly fixed to cheeks, this blatant mockery of pattinson, stewart and ensemble is easy, irreverent viewing. though many scenes are lifted directly from a mixture of the twilight films thus far, the story maintains some of its own momentum. centring on becca (proske), a nervous non-vampire teen, she (like bella) is caught between her affections for two boys. With father control issues added to the fray, becca is mortified when he continually treats her like a child. You can see where the producers are coming from. pushing the tagline: ‘some sagas just won’t die’, the allusion to the barrage of books, tV and films flogging Dracula-esque gothic romance betrays a saturation point that would inevitably become lampooned. However, fan or foe of stephenie meyer’s series, I think everyone will emit even a little snigger or two from this parodic punch in the face of popular culture. Hannah May

8 Hello reader, I want to play a game. At the nearby ticket stand you will find two choices. one: you buy the ticket, forgive a franchise for having succumbed to the law of diminished returns and prepare to learn one last lesson in twisted morality. or two: walk away, and miss the chance to experience saw’s goriest chapter in terrifying 3D. Although twists and turns are guaranteed, the plot at its simplest sees series’ survivors (including fan favourite Dr. Lawrence Gordon from the original movie) coming together at a sinister self-help group. but one of them wishes to see Jigsaw’s legacy live on. more Avatar than my bloody Valentine, the 3D effect here is not about ‘blood coming towards the camera’ style cheap tricks. think instead of saw’s dark, dank locations: every sweaty drip, every metallic echo – because now you get to feel a part of them. Lauded as inventive and shocking six years ago, saw is the most seminal horror franchise since scream. but where Wes craven’s trilogy limped to a close, Jigsaw’s final game promises greater gore and grotesquery than ever before. 8 paranormal Activity was made on a shoestring by Hollywood standards. costing approximately $15,000, the 2009 film was a box office sensation, earning a formidable £151 million worldwide. the brand of spine-tingling supernatural drama, presented via the footage of a haunted couple’s video camera, certainly hit the spot with horror fans and now director tod Williams is set to unleash more uber creepy drama in paranormal Activity 2. the writer and director of the first film, oren peli, puts his stamp on proceedings by taking producing and screenwriting credits. After the escape of the main character, Katie (Featherston), at the end of the first film, the new chapter begins with her return. Although it is set in the same house, the number of cameras has increased to view more of the events that take place. plot details are scarce but, with a new family living in the house and an eerie blend of visual techniques, the film is set to be even more nail biting than the first. expect to be teetering on the edge of your seat from start to finish. 8 Facebook needs no introduction - chances are, you’re a regular user of the social networking phenomenon and will find this story of its beginnings utterly compelling. We are taken back to an autumn night in 2003 where we see Harvard undergraduate and computer programming genius mark Zuckerberg (eisenberg) sitting at his computer frantically working on a new idea that will enable him to take over social networking online. once caught up in the world of online blogging and programming, his dorm room becomes the centre of a global social network and a revolution in communication. six years and 500 million friends later, mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history but, as everyone knows, success isn’t always easy and, for Zuckerberg, it leads to both personal and legal complications. Directed by David Fincher, whose credits include se7en and the curious case of benjamin button, and a score by the belgian scala and Kolacny brothers, this story of a journey from friendship to alienation looks set to be a sure-fire hit. 8 Admittedly, it’s been done before. the heist genre, such as ocean’s eleven and company, is a formidable filmic formula. containing action, some high speed gloss and adrenaline, plus the ubiquitous good-looking cast - takers is no exception to the modern cinematic blueprint. However, it looks to offer something different with an altogether stripped down, paced up presentation of bank robbers and their law-dodging antics. takers follows a crew of criminals who are notorious for executing the perfect heist. but, as they prepare for one last robbery, one determined detective (Dillon) looks set to nail the case. With some spellbinding scenes involving parkour-style chases, it also promises ‘intense sequences of violence and action, a sexual situation/partial nudity and some language’. If that isn’t hook enough, then its cast list reads like a roll call of action flicks’ finest (not to mention, fittest), featuring the popular likes of Hayden christensen, paul Walker, Idris elba and chris brown. the simultaneous race to outwit on one final, highly lucrative job promises slick, high-octane entertainment. Merlin’s Devon Cinemas The Central Torquay • In January 2000 Merlin Cinemas were presented with a surprise opportunity to purchase the recently closed two screen Odean in Torquay. It was then given a dramatic facelift along with the Merlin touch and renamed the Central Cinema. With the cinema now providing four screens, all fitted to a very high standard, Torquay now again supports a successful and profitable town centre cinema. In March 2010 the Central received 3D digital installation on the largest screen in the bay to ensure Walt Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” could be screened. Not only was this the first cinema in the area to go 3D but also the first Devon cinema within the Merlin group. Uniquely ticket prices for 3D films at the Central Cinema will be the same as those for all other films, unlike most cinemas who charge a premium price for 3D.

The Tivoli Tiverton • In 2008 the future of the Tivoli was looking bleak despite a local campaign headed by Dame Helen Mirren to ‘Save the Tivoli’. However Merlin decided to step in and re-opened the cinema in June 2008. There are plans in the near future to expand the site with the introduction of several new screens.
