THEY CALL ME MR GLASS After a shock twist revealed Split shared its universe with Unbreakable, a new superhero franchise was born. A dark, grounded thriller with almost no CGI could this be the anti-MCU? WORDS CHRIS WASEY RELEASE DATE 18 JANUARY / Director M. Night Shyamalan / Starring Bruce Willis, James McAvoy, Samuel L. Jackson / Genre Mystery, Sci-Fi, Thriller

M.

Night Shyamalan blew our minds with The Sixth Sense in 1999. A year later, Unbreakable did it again. But having defined twist endings for a generation of cinemagoers, the world began to always expect a hidden truth behind the curtain. Sixteen years later, Shyamalan RODUCTION A FILM BYreturned STEVEN KNIGHT to greatness with Split, where DIRECTOR OF MCALPINE PHOTOGRAPHYheJESSintroduced HALL BSC us to Kevin Wendell SON RESNIWRICKTTENANDWILLIAM SADLEIR Y HEELEY DIRECTEDBYCrumb STEVEN KNIGHT (James McAvoy), a man suffering with dissociative identity disorder. Kevin’s mind houses twentythree personalities, each boasting

entirely different physical abilities and characteristics. Lurking beneath the surface is number twenty-four, “The Beast,” a super-powered creature with near limitless strength. With an incredible performance from McAvoy, this fraught thriller’s final scene opened the parameters of its story’s world, revealing Unbreakable’s reluctant superhero hero, David Dunn, watching events unfold on TV. And so, the Shyamala-verse was born. In a hotly anticipated conclusion to the unexpected trilogy, David, Mr Glass, and all of Kevin’s personalities collide. While manipulating the world around him, Glass prepares to reveal the truth about superheroes and villains. But as he slowly poisons Kevin’s more stable personalities, David must be prepared to sacrifice himself to stop the monster that remains.

Unbreakable Recap Eastrail 177 crashes, killing one-hundredand-thirty-one passengers. There is one survivor, David Dunn, who, astoundingly, doesn’t have a scratch on him. A (FOSTER) FAMILY Fam ily MATTER A couple interested in foster care takes in not one but three siblings as they scramble to get a grasp on life as an Instant Family. WORDS HARRY FAINT RELEASE DATE 14 FEBRUARY / Director Sean Anders / Starring Mark Wahlberg, Rose Byrne, Isabela Moner / Genre Comedy, Drama

M

eet Pete and Ellie (Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne), a couple ready to take the next step in their relationship, and it’s a big one: starting a family. A spontaneous visit to the local foster care orientation fair quickly opens their eyes to the wide range of children in need, and seals the deal as they make the decision to take in a defiant fifteen-yearold girl named Lizzy, played by Transformers: The Last Knight’s

Isabela Moner. But there’s a catch - she comes with two younger siblings: Juan and Lita. Without nine months of mental preparation that comes with pregnancy, and with no time for how-to books or classes, Pete and Ellie become overnight parents in a family of five, knee-deep in chaos, laugh-out-loud awkward moments, and hilarious escapades. But Instant Family’s humour is matched equally by its emotional gumption; this film doesn’t hold back in addressing obstacles specific to fostering. Pete and Ellie swiftly discover how challenging yet rewarding parenting can be, and truth be told, family can come from anywhere, at any moment, if you are open to it.

INSTANT FAMILY

Por traits Dysfunctional families have long been causing mayhem on the screen for our amusement over the past couple of decades. Some favourites:

CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN (2003) It’s only a matter of seconds before the house is destroyed and the kids are arguing. Understandable really, there are twelve of them.

RV (2006) Rebellious kids and out of touch parents. Robin Williams stars as a dad with an endangered job who chooses a road trip to the Rockies over Hawaii in order to attend a business meeting. Disaster is on the Colorado horizon.

YOURS, MINE & OURS (2005) A widowed admiral marries a widowed handbag designer, bringing together his eight and her ten kids to become one big family - a family at war, that is.

EVERYTHING IS AWESOME... AGAIN! LEGO Emmet, Wyldstyle, and Batman join forces once more to smash an invading alien force to pieces in The LEGO Movie 2. WORDS AARON POTTER RELEASE DATE 8 FEBRUARY / Directors Mike Mitchell, Trisha Gum / Starring Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Tiffany Haddish / Genre Animation, Action, Adventure

I

t’s been five years since the genius of Christopher Miller and Phil Lord’s The LEGO Movie hit the big screen, setting us on a brick-busting adventure which proved that even the unlikeliest person can be special, or perhaps, more appropriately, awesome. It was at the end of that movie where we were first given a glimpse of what was in store for next time, as invaders from the planet Duplon started to touch

down. They claimed to come in pieces, but we’re not so sure. Having previously worked on both the Shrek and Alvin And The Chipmunks film franchises, director Mike Mitchell takes on the task of building on the adventures of Chris Pratt’s Emmet Brickowski and the gang. The LEGOverse has been transformed into a post-apocalyptic wasteland since we last left our heroes, spurring Emmet to put his skills as a Master Builder to the ultimate test. Expect more irreverent humour, stranger new worlds, and an even more eclectic mix of colourful brick-based characters when The LEGO Movie 2 arrives in cinemas. MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS

COUSINS AT WAR As Mary Queen Of Scots challenges her distance cousin Elizabeth I for the English throne, she finds herself in a turbulent conflict in this historic tale of love and tragedy. WORDS HARRY FAINT RELEASE DATE 18 JANUARY / Director Josie Rourke / Starring Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie, David Tennant / Genre Biography, Drama, History

F

ollowing their Academy Award nominations for Best Actress in 2018 for Lady Bird and I, Tonya respectively, Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie are set to compete once again. This time it’s through the retelling of the rivalry that grew between Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I in claiming the right to the throne. Get ready to witness their stormy relationship amidst the negativity their male courts held towards having a female monarch. The film follows Mary as she returns to Scotland at age eighteen following the death of her first husband, Francis II of France. The story, based on the 2003 biography by John Guy, features other wellknown faces including David Tennant as famed Reformation leader John Knox, a bitter enemy of Mary who infamously branded her an adulteress as well as a wicked woman. Director Josie Rourke makes her first step into the realms of filmmaking after fifteen years directing theatre productions in what is set to be a glorious showcase of stunning costume design paired with beautiful scenery and topped with emotive, powerhouse performances from Ronan and Robbie. 18 January / February 2019

A Queen Of Many Faces This isn’t the first time Elizabeth Tudor has graced the silver screen. Other films to have portrayed the Virgin Queen include:

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (1998) Dame Judi Dench famously starred as Queen Elizabeth I in this Oscar-winning film, even winning herself Best Supporting Actress despite being on screen for only eight minutes.

ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE (2007) This is Cate Blanchett’s second time playing the Queen in the historical epic that follows Elizabeth’s attempts to deal with challenges from both abroad and closer to home.

THE VIRGIN QUEEN (1955) Bette Davis’ interpretation of Good Queen Bess detailed her relationship with Sir Walter Raleigh and is also the second time she played the role on film.

THE FAVOURITE. AND WHY YOU SHOULDN’T PICK ONE What in the world could come between a temperamental Queen and her most-trusted friend and advisor? A fallen aristocrat, hell-bent on regaining her position by any means necessary. WORDS ROBB SHEPPARD RELEASE DATE 1 JANUARY / Director Yorgos Lanthimos / Starring Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz / Genre Biography, Comedy, Drama

T

he Favourite grabs one’s attention first and foremost with the opportunity to witness Emma Stone as you rarely have before. Gone is the sweet, sassy, endearing star of La La Land, instead replaced by a scheming social climber, willing to cause much unpleasantness. To put it mildly. Prepared to go to great lengths to avoid relinquishing her position is Rachel Weisz’s Lady Sarah; the only one who dare call out Queen Anne’s

deranged behaviour for what it is. As the 18th Century monarch, British acting royalty Olivia Colman (warming up for portraying Queen Liz in The Crown) brings her comedic chops, previously polished in Peep Show and Hot Fuzz. She fleshes out the role with an air of tragedy and fragility that will have you laughing one minute and lamenting the next. Your typical period drama, this is not. What it is is a quirky comedy that surprises through its sharp script and subtle satire. As such, it makes a fitting follow-up for director Yorgos Lanthimos, whose previous films include The Lobster and the Cannes Film Festival’s 2017 Best Screenplay joint-winner, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer. The Queen will see you now.

THE FAVOURITE

We Are Not Amused THE LION KING He just couldn’t wait to be King; his unscrupulous uncle Scar had other plans. Luckily, Simba had Timon and Pumbaa’s ha-hahijinks to help him claim the crown. Not laughing? What’s a motto with you?

THE PRINCESS DIARIES Mia (a freshly-discovered Anne Hathaway) suddenly finds out she’s the heir to the throne of Genovia. Cue a crash-course in all things regal: a monarch-worthy makeover, elocution lessons from Mary Poppins, and a glow up for her eyebrows!

COMING TO AMERICA Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem journeyed to NYC to find a wife. Which meant he had to ditch his royal robes, learn to go to the bathroom by himself, and get a job. Anyone fancy a Big Mick burger on the way home?

THE SHOW MUST GO ON Comedy legends Laurel & Hardy journey to British shores in the hope of reigniting their floundering careers. Can the pair heal their personal wounds and recapture the magic, or will the curtain fall once and for all?

The Daily News

WORDS BRODY ROSSITER RELEASE DATE 11 JANUARY / Director Jon S. Baird / Starring Steve Coogan, John C. Reilly, Shirley Henderson / Genre Biography, Comedy, Drama

S

tan Laurel and Oliver Hardy remain one of history’s most beloved comedy double acts. The prolific duo and their signature brand of physical comedy became icons of popular culture due to their onscreen performances - yet things weren’t always so rosy for the pair. By 1952, Stan & Ollie’s act had entered its twilight years, American audiences had moved on from their slapstick schtick, and the once titans of the silver screen had begun to sink into obscurity. The solution to their woes? A British comeback tour, of course. With their personal relationship in a fragile state and looming health issues plaguing Hardy, the pair pushed on with the intention 20 January / February 2019

of recapturing past glories and earning a much-needed payday. Steve Coogan once again showcases his talent for impressions, donning the bowler hat of Laurel, and the always engaging John C. Reilly steps into Hardy’s shoes, for two accomplished and deeply nuanced performances that have already garnered widespread critical acclaim. Stan & Ollie presents all the components for a charming, melancholy, but tremendously funny excursion from England’s dreary winter landscape. This year, rediscover two of cinema’s most enduring characters and the men who brought them to life.

STAN & OLLIE

Prolific Pals

During their time together, Laurel & Hardy appeared in over one-hundred pictures, from silent films to full-length feature releases. The duo officially became a double act in 1927, but before joinin g forces, they both boasted successful stage and screen careers of their own, writing, directing, and starring in multiple productions. However, it was their coming together that brought the massive success and acclaim that has endured over nearly a century. The duo’s vast body of work still proves highly influential today, with actors, performers, and artists regularly citing the pair’s antics as inspiration. Stan & Ollie promises to remind audiences both new and old of Laur el & Hardy’s impact on comedy and cinema.

HAVE YOURSELF A WILD RIDE The creators of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and Barnyard deliver another animated adventure where imagination becomes reality. WORDS AARON POTTER RELEASE DATE 12 APRIL / Director Dylan Brown / Starring Brianna Denski, Tom Baker, John Oliver / Genre Animation, Family, Fantasy

F

eaturing the voice talents of such actors as Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Garner, and Mila Kunis, Wonder Park is an animated film set within a world where a child’s creativity can bring the wonders of her thought-to-be-imaginary amusement park to life. Tapping into the limitless amount of ingenuity that comes from being a child with big dreams, the movie follows June, a girl who one day finds that the Wonderland of her childhood playtime has become real. It isn’t all rides and wild slides, however, as June and friends soon learn that the park has become infested by an evil horde of Chimpanzombies. Only by working together with the park’s furry cohorts of bears and beavers can June restore peace to the land of her imagination. Wonder Park promises to be a charming and fun-fuelled ride for all the family, proving that just because you grow up doesn’t mean you have to lose that special spark of imagination. Should the movie set audiences laughing, there’s already a Wonder Park TV spin-off in the works to hit the small screen later in the year.

A Tour of Theatrical Theme Parks JURASSIC PARK (JURASSIC PARK) A park’s ability to instil both wonder and dread was first cemented when Sam Neil’s Dr Alan Grant stepped of the Jeep. A land of cloned dinosaurs might be good in theory, but Jurassic Park highlighted the downsides.

TROUBLEMAKER THEME PARK (SPY KIDS 2) Robert Rodriguez’s first Spy Kids sequel, Island Of Lost Dreams, raised the amusement park bar with a ride that juggles its visitors in the air. A landmark architectural achievement, but it didn’t do the kids’ tummies any good.

SPOOKY ISLAND (SCOOBY-DOO) Scooby and the gang’s first big screen adventure saw them travel to the mysterious land of Rowan Atkinson’s Spooky Island. It lived up to its name, even if there was a maniacal Great Dane behind it.
