YOU BETTER WATCH OUT

With Santa Claus kidnapped and Christmas at risk of being cancelled, the task of saving it falls to the unlikeliest of partners. WORDS AARON POTTER

Red One

IN CINEMAS 6 NOVEMBER

Director Jake Kasdan / Starring Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, J.K. Simmons / Genre Action, Comedy

Are you ready to enter a world where Santa is real… and ripped?! J.K. Simmons finally puts his magnificent beard to good use by taking up the role of a benchpressing Saint Nick. Unfortunately for him, however, his stint as Santa looks to be over almost before it’s begun when he’s kidnapped on the eve of the big day.

This forces Dwayne Johnson’s Head of North Pole Security, Callum Drift, into action, reluctantly recruiting Chris Evans’ roguish bounty hunter, Jack O’Malley, to rescue Code Name: RED ONE and save Christmas in time. Naughty and nice must find a way to get along if they hope to succeed, especially as their globetrotting festive adventure will see them facing hulking abominable snowmen and even Krampus himself!

Red One presents Christmas with a twist, a film unafraid to take a more action-centric approach that warms with explosions rather than the cosy fires of your traditional, wholesome holiday fare. The action-comedy marks director Jake Kasdan’s third venture with Dwayne Johnson following the two Jumanji movies, with the pair no doubt hoping they’ve once again channelled cinema magic – this time in the form of a potential Christmas classic.

The Rock and Captain America working together to save Christmas… Red One brings that joy to the world this November.

Santa, We Know Him!

Richard Attenborough

A 1994 remake of the 1947 Miracle On 34th Street is so magical that it surpasses the original’s status as a Christmas classic. Richard Attenborough shines as the man who may or may not be Santa.

Tim Allen

Disney’s The Santa Clause transforms Tim Allen into the face – and belly – of Father Christmas for an entire generation. The story of an everyday guy accidentally taking on the responsibility of the red suit is a real treat.

David Harbour

Home Alone meets Die Hard is the only way to describe the Stranger Things star’s unabashedly brutal portrayal of the iconic Christmas figure. He’s called into such actions when a team of mercenaries take a family hostage… on a very Violent Night.

LOVE ON A CAROUSEL

Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield are young lovers who fall for each other after an unusual meet-cute, but their relationship tests them more than they could’ve ever imagined in this snapshot of a lifetime of love.

We Live In Time

IN CINEMAS 1 JANUARY

Director John Crowley / Starring

Andrew Garfield, Florence Pugh / Genre Drama, Romance

It’s almost awards season again: the blockbuster summer is over and, as the clocks change and the nights get longer, the flood of films looking to take home the big honours begin their long journey to find audiences.

Among them is John Crowley’s new decade-spanning romance and ever since its first look, a swell of anticipation built as much as a knowing that many tissues will be needed to make it through it. Not least of all, because of the pairing of two of Britain’s hottest stars, Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh.

They play Tobias, an employee at Weetabix, and Almut, a hot young chef, respectively; two twenty-somethings trying to make their mark on the world when they’re thrust together after a

car accident. Almost immediately, though, sparks fly between them and while they aren’t always on the same page as their relationship progresses, their love flourishes over that time.

For fans of real love stories, as well as Crowley’s excellent 2015 film Brookyln, We Live In Time is as smart as it is romantic, sad as it is uplifting, and reminds us all once again that love, actually, is all around.

Tick, Tick... Boom!

Garfield delivers an Academy Award- nominated performance in Lin Manuel Miranda’s utterly spellbinding musical that tells the story of famed theatre musicalJonathancomposer/lyricist Larson.

Lady Macbeth!

Pugh burst onto the international stage with her stunning performanceinWilliamOldroyd’s brilliant film about a young woman stuck in a loveless marriage who soon begins to assert her power over those who continue to suffocate her life.

Brooklyn

POSTCARD

Crowley’s stunning, moving adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s novel sees Saoirse Ronan as a young Irishwoman who moves to 195O’s Brooklyn and soon finds love with a local boy. However, the draw of her home in Ireland and a different future there that her parents approve of gives her second thoughts.

STRENGTH AND HONOUR

Ridley Scott dusts off his sandals and leads us back to Ancient Rome for another epic story about a gladiator who dares to take on an Empire.

Gladiator II

IN CINEMAS 15 NOVEMBER

Director Ridley Scott / Starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Connie Neilsen / Genre Action, Drama

It’s been twenty-four years since we were thoroughly entertained by the best gladiator Rome has ever seen in unforgettable cinema events that still echo through eternity.

After witnessing the death of Russell Crowe’s heroic Maximus by the hands of Joaquin Phoenix’s cruel Commodus, young Lucius Verus distances himself from his mother Lucilla and the Empire to which he’s heir.

Years later, he’s married and with a son in the quiet coastal town of Numidia. His peace his interrupted when a Roman army, led by General Marcus Acacius, invades his home and takes him prisoner. Now in the Colosseum, he must fight for his life, confront his past, and rise up as a hero to return the glory of Rome to its people.

Paul Mescal stars as Lucius, another slaved-turned-Gladiator in Scott’s new chapter in this epic saga. He’s joined by an all-star cast, including Pedro Pascal as the relentless Marcus Acacius,

WORDS ADAM MATULEWICZ

Denzel Washington as the rebellious Macrinus, and Connie Neilsen reprising her role as Lucilla, with Stranger Things’ Joseph Quinn and The White Lotus’ Fred Hechinger as the tyrannical twin Emperors, Geta and Caracalla.

Swords will clash and shields will splinter, but bigger action set pieces, fiercer animal encounters, and even great naval battles await in the longawaited follow-up to the multi-awardwinning epic and must-see event of the winter.

Ridley Scott is famed for his epic action and he’s pulled out all the stops to make Gladiator II bigger and better than its predecessor. Back in 2000, Scott convinced cinemagoers that Crowe fought a tiger by bringing real ones to set. A prop tiger with limited animatronics was used in actual fact, but thanks to today’s technology, he’s able to one up himself in the sequel where a combination of practical and cutting-edge digital effects can pit Mescal against a fearsome rhinoceros! Duels are Scott’s forte, with many famous face offs to his name. Deckard vs Batty in Blade Runner. Damon vs Driver in The Last Duel. Now, the stage is set for the epic clash of Mescal vs Pascal.

IN THE JUNGLE

Hairy situations await on a new adventure with a national treasure as Britain’s beloved bear returns to his roots on a fun-filled family trip from London to Peru.

However, they arrive only to learn from Olivia Colman’s Reverend Mother that Lucy has disappeared deep into the Amazon rainforest on a quest of her own.

Olivia Colman adds a touch of mystery as the eccentric, guitar-playing nun, who may hold the key to an important family secret for Paddington to uncover.

Also joining the fun are Antonio Banderas and Carla Tous as charismatic explorer Hunter Cabot and his fearless daughter, who lead the Browns on their jungle cruise into the unknown.
