ALL ACTION FANTASY HORROR
I, FrankensteIn Release date 31 JanuaRy / director Stuart Beattie / starring Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy, Miranda Otto / Genre Action, Fantasy, Sci-Fi
From the creators of Underworld comes another all action fantasy horror in the form of I, Frankenstein, a bold reimagining of Mary Shelley’s definitive gothic tale. Following his previous success with prosthetic, CGI-rendered facial scarring as Harvey Dent/Two-Face, Aaron Eckhart returns to the makeup artist’s chair for his interpretation of the disfigured horror icon. Set two hundred years after he was stitched together, Victor Frankenstein’s monstrous creation has adopted his maker’s name and operates as a private investigator in a world that has never accepted him. But, Adam Frankenstein isn’t the only monster who populates the ominously titled city of Darkhaven and before long he finds himself enveloped in a ferocious war between winged gargoyles, fallen angels and the human population who suffer the demons’ torment. In offering a modern revision of a gothic tale and infusing the existing traditional themes with stylish visual effects and high octane martial arts, writer director Stuart Beattie looks to mould Kevin Grevioux’s graphic novel, which is also due for a January release, into an eye catching film that is sure to give Underworld fans an early 2014 treat.

Out Of The Furnace
Release date 28 FebRuaRy / director Brian Percival / starring Sophie Nélisse, Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson / Genre Drama, War
Release date 31 JanuaRy / director Scott Cooper / starring Christian Bale, Zoe Saldana, Woody Harrelson / Genre Thriller
Fresh from a stint directing the awarding winning television series Downton Abbey Brian Percival brings us this heart wrenching adaptation of Markus Zusak’s novel of the same name. With a delightful performance from newcomer Sophie Nélisse, The Book Thief tells the story of an extraordinary, spirited young girl sent to live with a foster family in WWII Germany. Intrigued by the only book she brought with her, she begins collecting books as she finds them. With the help of her new parents and a secret guest under the stairs, she learns to read and creates a magical world that inspires them all.
From Scott Cooper, the critically-acclaimed writer and director of Crazy Heart, comes a gripping and gritty drama about family, fate, circumstance, and justice. Russell Baze (Christian Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. When Russell’s brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from serving time in Iraq, he gets lured into one of the most ruthless crime rings in the Northeast and mysteriously disappears. The police fail to crack the case, so - with nothing left to lose - Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on the line to seek justice for his brother.

Released 31 JanuaRy / director Peter Berg / starring Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Eric Bana / Genre Action, Drama, Thriller
The leGo Movie, the first-ever, full-length theatrical leGo adventure, opens in a cinema near you this February. The adventure follows emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average leGo minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world! He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared. Brought to you from the filmmakers behind Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and co-director Chris McKay (Robot Chicken). As they confront unthinkable odds together, the four men find reserves of strength and resilience as they stay in the fight to the finish. Mark Wahlberg stars as Marcus luttrell, the author of the firstperson memoir, whose book shows how the power of the human spirit is tested when we are pushed beyond our mental and physical limits. Release date 10 JanuaRy / director Jonathan Teplitzky / starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, Jeremy Irvine / Genre Biography, Drama

So when Billy, the group’s sworn bachelor, finally proposes to his thirtysomething (of course) girlfriend, the four head to Las Vegas with a plan to stop acting their age and relive their glory days. Decades later, Lomax discovers that the Japanese interpreter he holds responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him, and his haunting past. Directed by Jonathan Teplitzky, and starring Academy Award-winner Colin Firth, Jeremy Irvine, and Academy Award-winner Nicole Kidman, the film is a powerful tale of survival, love and redemption.

Chris O’dowd (bridesmaids) also stars as bruce’s demeaning colleague and rival, with Olivia Coleman and Ian Mcshane also appearing. set for release at the beginning of the year, Cuban Fury is a british romantic comedy that will keep the laughs coming and is set to prove, as the trailer asserts, that ‘real men dance’. 12 January / February 2014

OUT OF TIME Hold on for a mesmerising trip back in time with Mr. Peabody and Sherman in DreamWorks’ latest adventure. Their mission? To save history. No pressure…
HOKEY SMOKES!
WorDS Lee Curtis
reLease date 7 February / director Rob Minkoff / starring Ty Burrell, Max Charles, Stephen Colbert / Genre Animation
M
r. Peabody is a groundbreaking scientist, prolific inventor, master chef, two-time Olympian and all-round genius. He’s also a dog. Along with his adopted human son Sherman, the accomplished canine uses his most extraordinary invention, the WABAC (‘Wayback’) machine, to travel through time and experience historical events personally. But when Sherman accidentally breaks the laws of the universe and causes a paradox, our two heroes find themselves in a race to repair history and save the future. From the creators of beloved animations Shrek, Madagascar and How To Train Your Dragon comes another eye-popping family adventure
that is sure to give children - and adults - an entertaining half-term treat. After plans for a live action film faded, DreamWorks animation studios took up the reins for the big screen translation of Mr. Peabody’s Improbable History, a regular segment from The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, which has been teased since 2007. While the film does mirror many elements of the animated series, it also makes a significant alteration with the introduction of a female character. In an attempt to help Sherman make a friend, Mr. Peabody invites Penny Peterson, the daughter of family friends, to his house – but, unbeknownst to him, their ensuing friendship has catastrophic consequences. When Sherman and Penny take the WABAC for a joyride and accidentally tear a hole in the universe, some of history’s most important events are dramatically altered. It’s left to Mr. Peabody to come to their rescue, save the universe and, more dauntingly, learn how to be a parent.
From the successful reception of the squirrel based gags at the beginning of the ice age films to the beautiful simplicity of disney’s Oscar-winning Paperman, short films that accompany feature-length animations have become an important part of the cinema experience. For an extra dose of nostalgia, theatrical screenings of Mr. Peabody and sherman will be preceded by dreamWorks’ animated short, rocky and bullwinkle. beauty and the beast director Gary trousdale directs a short that sees 96-year-old June Foray reprise her famous role as rocket J. squirrel alongside spongebob squarePants’ tom Kenny as her companion bullwinkle Moose. but there’s more to this short than entertainment. there are rumours that dreamWorks is using it as an opportunity to test the water for a full, feature-length resurrection in the near future.

n the greatest way possible, RoboCop was a creature of the ‘80s. DNA of the eponymous ‘part man, part machine’ was laced liberally with all the tropes that made the era so distinctive. Advanced technology, used for both good and evil. A dystopian future, at the mercy of not just criminals, but evil corporations. And most importantly, lots of wonderfully gratuitous, exaggerated violence. But RoboCop was anything but a hulking, thoughtless blockbuster. Where its contemporaries blindly followed a pattern of ‘bigger muscles = more bucks’, RoboCop aspired to something more. Amidst the gunfire, it incisively lampooned a decade marked with knee-jerk conservatism, rampant capitalism and the birth of consumerism. Consider the role of the antagonist company, (the not so subtly named) Omni Consumer Products, coldly running an under-funded police service into the ground as the officers are killed in the street. Fans will remember the exaggerated ‘ads’ peppered throughout the feature, sideswiping at issues ranging from private healthcare, a lack of compassion for criminals (MagnaVolt), climate change (Sunblock 5000) and the rise of violent entertainment for children (Nukem). As the cinema-going public has grown ever more cynical about tenuous sequels, remakes
and reboots, RoboCop (2014) has worked hard to win over fans of the original. The premise remains much the same: injured police officer is transformed into cyborg crimefighter. But many of the little details have been updated, retaining a sharp edge of cultural comment. Instead of being shot, Murphy is injured in a car bomb. Corporate schmoozing becomes media manipulation. Concerns about inner city violence and police brutality shift to consider the morality of drone warfare and US intervention (‘American machines help keep people safe abroad’). Fans of the original will be pleased to see that ED209 is present and accounted for as well, revealed at the end of the second trailer, battling our hero into a 50-metre fall. Of course, there is one elephant in the room: the iconic suit is now black, not cool Detroit steel. In a clever nod to the film’s forerunner, this is quickly addressed in the trailer, as we see an ‘80s style RoboCop being previewed by Omnicorp executives, “make it more tactical... let’s go with black” before cutting to a visceral montage of a jet-black MKII causing untold destruction. The bulky, weighty original seemed extremely powerful but - compared to the lightning fast nature of modern technology would look antiquated on screen. The new, sleek, almost insectoid design feels far more menacing – this iteration more ‘ultra-modern military’ than ‘man in tin can’. It was a bold change, and one for the better. Confidently taking the suit in a new direction sends a clear message: we respect the film that
...with RoboCop battling bad guys along darkened corridors and snapping the necks of drones in an abandoned warehouse - but also expansive - with aerial drones and large-scale skirmishes across the cityscape.
you know and love - but make no mistake, this is not your father’s RoboCop. The action is far more ambitious than anything in the previous iteration. Both claustrophobic - with RoboCop battling bad guys along darkened corridors and snapping the necks of drones in an abandoned warehouse but also expansive - with aerial drones and large-scale skirmishes across the cityscape. With modern upgrades come modern budgets. This new iteration, funded to the tune of roughly $120 million (a relatively mid-sized production by today’s standards), is more than ten times the shoestring ’87 release. But where the original cast unknowns, RoboCop (2014) features an ensemble of character actors and household names. Joel Kinnaman (famous for playing the complex and troubled detective, Jan Meyer in The Killing) is RoboCop. A-list support comes by way of Samuel L. Jackson, a powerful media figure and outspoken supporter of mechanised crime control. Michael Keaton plays the villainous CEO of Omnicorp and Gary Oldman is the scientist responsible for transforming Murphy into an armoured crime-fighter, struggling with the ethical ramifications of his creation as the company begins to assert its control. If box office success is forthcoming, there remains a grand scope for the franchise to evolve. The original spawned two sequels, one live action television series and two animated shows. Although 25 years may have seen some changes, the two fundamentals - action and intelligence are very much alive. We won’t be saying ‘sayonara’ to RoboCop for quite some time yet.

DIRTY SEXY MONEY Release daTe 17 JanuaRy / director Martin Scorsese / starring Leonardo DiCaprio, P.J. Byrne, Jon Favreau / Genre Biography, Comedy, Crime
M
artin Scorsese is in familiar territory although it may not seem that way at first glance. Where once he made a film about gangsters, he has now made a film about bankers. And there are some striking similarities between The Wolf of Wall Street -from its storyline to its heroes and villains - and the legendary film-maker’s past films. For one thing, an obsession with money is a principal theme: the sweet yet sour medicine that both heals and poisons the American dream. Similarly, Leonardo DiCaprio is returning to a tried and tested skill: portraying largerthan-life real people and real events. From The Aviator to Catch Me If You Can, he excels at taking real-life characters and adding that cinematic sparkle to make their stories shine on the big screen. The Wolf of Wall Street is based on the memoirs of Jordan Belfort, who lived a life of self-indulgence and unstoppable Wall Street greed in the late 1980s. As a stockbroker, Belfort founded Stratton Oakmont in his early twenties, and made himself and his staff more than slightly rich. His money-hoovering schemes essentially involved cheating investors out of money and, by the time the operation
was shut down by the regulators in 1996, Belfort’s company had conned people out of a quarter of a billion dollars. Combine that kind of money and a clear lack of morals and you have a recipe for excess and hedonism on an epic level; Belfort regularly cheated on his wife with prostitutes, threw wildly extravagant parties, took a lot of drugs and even staged dwarf-throwing contests for his staff on Friday afternoons. Unsurprisingly, the Hollywood heavyweights were desperate to adapt his memoirs into a film, even before they were written and published. In the end, DiCaprio battled Brad Pitt for the film rights. Terrence Winter, who penned Boardwalk Empire, wrote the screenplay. The attraction of Belfort as the protagonist of a movie is obvious. He was ambitious and determined; he achieved his goals; he revelled in excess. Yet no matter how fast he rose, how extravagantly he lived - as in the greatest of Hollywood stories - he was destined for a severe fall. There’s only so long you can keep going up before you have to start coming back down again, after all. Another factor that makes Belfort so compelling is his unrepentant attitude. Although reformed after a 22-month term in prison and now a motivational speaker, the tone of his memoir is in no way apologetic. How could Hollywood resist a real life bad boy, who rose from having absolutely nothing to making millionaires of himself and his ‘Strattonite’ colleagues? The similarities between this modern film
about stockbrokers and the gangster films of old can be easily drawn. As The Independent pointed out, the way in which DiCaprio describes Belfort’s story as epitomising “the corruption of the American dream” is rather similar to the way in which critics used to describe gangster movies. The land of the free and the home of the brave seems to have a lot more to offer those who shun morality and have the resolve to disobey the laws. The Wolf of Wall Street marks the fifth occasion DiCaprio and Scorsese have worked together. Their fruitful partnership has yielded the likes of Gangs of New York, The Aviator and Shutter Island, while Scorsese achieved long overdue recognition at the Oscars with both a Best Film and Best Director accolade for The Departed in 2006. Stellar support comes from the likes of Jean Dujardin, Kyle Chandler and a rumoured standout performance from Matthew McConaughey who plays Belfort’s early boss and mentor, Mark Hanna. And, in another foray from Judd Apatow-centric comedy into heavyweight drama, Jonah Hill plays successhungry Donnie Azoff, who becomes friends with Belfort and later his business partner. DiCaprio’s gripping portrayals of real life characters, coupled with Scorsese’s directing credentials and love of a good gangster movie, is sure to create a thrilling tale of risk, rise and redemption. We are all attracted to the anti-heroes, and the heady, hedonistic tale of Jordan Belfort and his band of co-workers is sure to be a darkly comic and captivating riot. January / February 2014 17

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ART release date 14 FeBruary / director George Clooney / starring George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon / Genre Adventure, Comedy, Drama
T
he haunting legacy of World War II still stands as one of the most savage and costly conflicts in human history. Not only did the war devour the lives of millions across the globe, it also came incredibly close to exterminating and rewriting our culture as we know it. One man’s attempts to shatter and piece history back together in his image threatened one of our most ancient and irreplaceable possessions - a possession which defines human nature from generation to generation: the beauty and splendour of our art. The Monuments Men recounts the true life tale of the US Army platoon who went to war with a mission far different from most: a rescue
mission not to recapture human lives, but to ensure the survival of the irreplaceable works of art which Hitler and his armies stole from the eyes of the world. Director and leading man George Clooney has enlisted a fine band of Hollywood brothers (and sisters) with whom to race against time, storming darkened Nazi bunkers and snowcapped mountaintop strongholds. Amongst many others, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray and The Artist’s Jean Dujardin all contribute to this darkly comic and thrilling cinematic portrait worthy of the lost masterpieces it strives to uncover. This profound, inspirational and impassioned race to save one of the very foundations of modern society will be one epic lesson in art history. The Monuments Men is a classical story of adventure with a contemporary twist that will surely be worth the price of admission.

Pan’s Labyrinth reLease date 28 February / director Brian Percival / starring Sophie Nélisse, Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson / Genre Drama, War
S
ophie Nélisse may not be the first name that comes to mind when discussing the most exciting young prospects of the film world but, despite her solo film credit, the bright-eyed Canadian actress is a promising talent with remarkable potential. Two years on from her exceptionally sophisticated breakthrough performance in Philippe Falardeau’s Oscar-nominated Monsieur Lazhar, for which the then twelve-year-old actress received a Genie Award, Sophie Nélisse’s career has skyrocketed into the mainstream. The intensity of a Hollywood production and the daunting prospect of working alongside experienced names such as Geoffrey Rush and
Emily Watson could prove too much for many her age, but she approaches her leading role in Brian Percival’s adaptation of Markus Zusak’s acclaimed bestseller with the same level-headed maturity that proved so successful in her debut. Nélisse stars as a young orphan girl named Liesel who is adopted by a kind-hearted German couple and unknowingly thrust into the atrocities of Nazi Germany. Having been taught to read by her foster father, she begins ‘borrowing’ forbidden books from a private library to fuel her newfound passion for literature and share the stories with the Jewish refugee hiding in her home. The Book Thief is less about the conflict itself and focuses more on the importance of affecting those around you in a positive way. It’s as much an exploration of war as it is a poignant tale about a spirited and courageous child’s fight for her own sense of humanity in such inhuman surroundings.
in presenting the horrors of World War ii through the eyes of its child protagonist, the book thief joins a rich list of adult dramas, which depict grown-up material from the perspective of children. Here’s our top three:
Pan’s LabyrintH (2006) set in the aftermath of the spanish Civil War, Guillermo del toro’s dark fable follows a young girl called Ofelia who, in escaping from her tyrannical stepfather, finds sanctuary in a mythical labyrinth full of nightmarish creatures.
tHis is enGLand (2006) a lonely twelve-year-old schoolboy finds solace in a group of skinheads only to become embroiled in racist violence when their subculture is adopted by white nationalists in 1980s’ england.
Grave OF tHe FireFLies (1988) as beautifully crafted as any studio Ghibli animation, this film is uniquely devastating in its depiction of war-torn Japan, as seen through the eyes of two orphaned children.

THE LEGO MOVIE
Win
Win Some Fantastic Film Goodies The original 3D computer animated story follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared. Chris Pratt (Moneyball) stars as the voice of Emmet. Will Ferrell (The Campaign) stars as the voice of his primary adversary, President Business, an uptight CEO who has a hard time balancing world domination with micro-managing his own life; while Liam Neeson (Taken) voices the president’s powerful henchman, known as Bad Cop/Good Cop, who will stop at nothing to catch Emmet. So get set for some rib-tickling fun as this sure fire hit assembles in a cinema screen near you on February 14th.

Refurbished Screen 1 Now Open » To coincide with the release of Alfonso Cuarons’ ‘Gravity’, Screen 1 in Exmouth has now re-opened, transformed by being rebuilt from the ground up. By raising the ceiling height, we’ve converted the auditorium to stadium seating, with new wider, and more comfortable, seating. A new larger screen and sound system has been fitted, making it the only cinema in the Exeter region to be equipped with Dolby 7.1 sound. The Dolby 3D system has been retained and we have fitted a brighter projection lamp to make sure 3D quality is as good as we can possibly make it. There are a whole host of other new features, such as Air Conditioning and Audio Description and plenty of behind the scenes alterations such as improved soundproofing and insulation, which all helps to make this one of the best screens in the Scott Cinemas portfolio. In the new year we’ll be continuing some refreshment works in other areas of the cinema.
