I Love You, has been working on the adaptation of the best selling novel Beautiful Creatures. The film follows Ethan Wate, a student living in a small town in South Carolina, who finds himself wrapped up in the life of Lena, a “caster” with access to powerful magic. Their growing romance is threatened, however, by an ominous choice that will soon be forced upon her - “light or dark”. As the adaptation of David Mitchell’s so-called ‘unfilmable’ book, Cloud Atlas, makes its big screen debut, Lee Curtis charts the rise of a mind-bending and time-bending epic

he Wachowskis became a household name in 1999 when their groundbreaking science fiction film The Matrix stunned critics and audiences with its innovation and gamechanging craft. After the release of the sequels, five years passed before fans were delivered a follow-up film: the high-octane, family-oriented adaptation of Speed Racer. The Wachowski siblings are filmmakers who prefer to take time between projects, though they are often involved with producing or writing roles during their periods away from directing. But it’s now been four and a half years since their last film and, in that time, the duo has somewhat slipped off the radar. When it was announced that the time since Speed Racer had been devoted to a collaboration project with Run Lola Run director Tom Tykwer to adapt the seemingly unadaptable and unfilmable Cloud Atlas, fan message boards erupted with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The filmmaking duo had returned and, armed with heaps of enthusiasm and the vision of their combined creative minds, the trio embarked on their most ambitious film project ever. British author David Mitchell’s novel Cloud Atlas was released in 2004 and generated an enormous amount of critical acclaim, winning both the British Book Awards Literary Fiction Award and the Richard and Judy Book of the Year. Its popularity was

largely due to its unique style and creative narrative approach. The novel presents six separate but interlinked narratives that span 500 years, several genres and many very different locations. But Mitchell’s novel is also a book about books and writing, blending a range of writing and typographical styles on the page. In addition to the typical challenges faced in any major movie production, which are explained below, the Wachowskis’ and Tykwer’s adaptation also faced a more paramount challenge: how would they adapt something that is so fundamentally linked to the written word? The filmmakers have explained that they were immediately inspired by the book and naturally wanted to translate it to cinema, but recognised that a straight book to film adaptation would be impossible because the source material is so inherently linked to its original format. Throughout the novel, Mitchell follows one plot line for multiple pages before suddenly jumping to another character in a different setting and

time period, whether from 19th century South Pacific Islands to a post-apocalyptic future in Seoul, Korea. The filmmakers accepted that they could not replicate this style because of the demands of a modern screenplay, which requires a more linear approach. This resulted in one of the most significant decisions the filmmakers made: to create their own interpretation of the novel rather than slavishly following its original form. In order to achieve this, the filmmakers broke the novel’s narrative down into scenes and wrote the major plot developments on index cards. These cards were then placed on the floor of their scriptwriting hideaway, in order to visualise the narrative. They took the pieces of Mitchell’s puzzle-like narrative and rearranged them to create their own unique telling of the story. Mitchell’s novel is commonly regarded as a noteworthy piece of postmodern fiction, due to its meta-narrative and close examination of an abundance of themes. The narrative tackles

many subjects, including identity, gender, reincarnation, futurism, society, relationships and politics, amongst others. But portraying these themes within a book is very different to presenting them within a film. While Mitchell was able to subtly hint at them within the text, as filmmakers they were required to portray them as a visual image. One of the main themes the filmmakers took and expanded upon is gender, and this could have been a reflection of a close personal connection for one of the Wachowskis. During production, the Wachowski brothers actually became a brother and sister team, as Larry Wachowski underwent gender reassignment surgery and became Lana Wachowski - perhaps contributing to their decision to cast male actors in female roles and female actors in male roles. In addition to these directorial puzzles, the project also faced more than its fair share of production problems. Despite their iconic status as filmmakers, and previous successes with multilayered narratives and ambitious projects, they really struggled to obtain enough funding. Over the course of the four and a half years of production, the project was abandoned on several occasions. Ultimately, when no major film studio was willing to give it adequate support, Cloud Atlas became the largest scale independently financed film ever, garnering investment from across the globe. In addition to outside investment, the directors themselves put in 10% of the overall budget (which was approximately £63.5million) to make it happen. From the tricky task of adapting the novel to the enormous financial struggles, Cloud Atlas looked set to remain on the page. However, through sheer determination, enthusiasm and creative skill, the three filmmakers overcame each challenge they encountered and have delivered a triumphant, long-awaited return to cinema. Cloud Atlas is released on 22nd February 2013

Though his distinctly gothic take on fantasy may be a feast for the eye, his handle on storytelling has often left many audiences aloof. In domesticated sci-fi horror Dark Skies, things look set to take a fearsome turn into the unknown. The Barrett family may seem atypical, but an unidentified alien terror is tearing their once peaceful existence apart and it’s only a matter of time before fatalities are claimed. It’s familiar territory but this stylised fright fest looks set to get your heart rate soaring. Ben Philpott

8 Cast Away’s director Robert Zemeckis loves a good plane crash. Cast Away had one of the most terrifyingly real plane crashes in the history of cinema, and it looks like it’s about to be bettered by the same man. Flight follows heavy-drinking pilot Whip Whitaker, portrayed by Hollywood heavyweight Denzel Washington. One day, he manages to perform an impossible manoeuvre which crash-lands his nose-diving commercial airliner in a way that miraculously saves everyone onboard, bar six. But the resulting investigation reveals some puzzling reasons for the plane’s malfunction, including a toxicology report which shows Whitaker had alcohol in his system. Matthew Brigden

Set within 1940s Los Angeles and inspired by true events, Gangster Squad follows a group of LAPD detectives who band together to dethrone the notorious gangsters who control the corrupt city. Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Josh Brolin headline a promising cast brimming with terrific talent. Most exciting of all is Sean Penn depicting the dangerous mob boss Mickey Cohen, whose legendary menace has been evident in many successful crime films. Lee Curtis

Cue some awesomely frenetic and over the top action combined with a typically tense and fisticuff-laden plot, this time filled with some sharp new blood to inject some life into the old dog. 8 Alfred Hitchcock, a name with over fifty films experience, a career expanding six decades highlighted by the highest grossing production of the 1960’s, the spine-chilling Psycho. That as it may, few knew marriage and money anxieties tainted this timeless thriller. This New Year provides a chance to peek behind the camera to the man and even further to the woman hidden by his success. The movie uncovers the life of Hitchcock in the creation of Psycho and even more significantly, the marriage that his wife endured his whole life. With experience in Journalism, Producing and even Scriptwriting for Spielberg, Sacha Gervasi is now adding to his director’s portfolio with this brave mission. Not alone on this pursuit Gervasi is joined no less by Sir Anthony Hopkins undertaking the lead role, who carries an array of awards, most recently a BAFTA in 2008. Playing Hopkins significant other is Dame Helen Mirren who grasps the role bodily and brilliantly. This British cast is ideal to portray Hitchcock at his prime which leads to expect a truly distinguished picture. Eleanor Goodwin

8 Based on the private diaries of Margaret Suckley, Hyde Park on Hudson explores the human side of one of history’s iconic leaders: US President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Murray). It is June 1939 and Britain is on the brink of war with Germany. At Hyde Park on Hudson, the Roosevelts are preparing for the arrival of the King and Queen of England - marking the first visit of a reigning British monarch to the USA. For the King and Queen, the weekend has a crucial role to play in building a special bond with a nation they look to for support. For the Roosevelts, the issue of international conflict must be faced alongside a challenging domestic situation, as Roosevelt’s wife Eleanor, mother Sara and secretary Missy vie to make the weekend an exceptional one. Then there’s Margaret Suckley (Linney) with whom Roosevelt is having a secret affair - and from whose perspective the story is told. Helmed by Notting Hill and Enduring Love director Roger Michell, this film might primarily be a biographical drama, but the presence of Bill Murray and Olivia Coleman suggests the drama will be laced with a generous dose of comedy. 8 It’s hard to forget the events that took place on Sunday 26th December 2004. An undersea megathrust earthquake occurred beneath the Indian Ocean and the ensuing tsunami devastated Thailand, Indonesia and many other surrounding regions. Though depicted as British, the narrative follows a true account of a Spanish family’s experiences prior to, during and after the devastating tsunami. Starring Ewan McGregor alongside Naomi Watts, the couple and their three sons are holidaying at an idyllic resort on the coast of Thailand. When the family are separated by the disaster, they search for each other amongst the mayhem of one of the worst natural disasters ever. Spanish filmmakers Juan Antonia Bayona and Sergio G. Sanchez, as director and writer respectively, made their debut in 2007, terrifying audiences with The Orphanage. Reunited with many members of the same crew it’s safe to expect similar horror techniques that will present a harrowing experience. While the pair aims to show the devastating tsunami at its most real, they also hope to install a deep and compelling examination of survivor’s guilt. Lee Curtis

8 Director Steven Spielberg is no stranger to historical drama and this time he’s taken on the unenviable task of portraying America’s most famous President. Lincoln tells the story of the last few months of President Lincoln’s life as he struggles to pass the Thirteenth Amendment before the end of the civil war, ensuring that his work to end slavery is not reversed. Encouraged to wait by his advisors, Lincoln fears that if he waits until after the conclusion of the war it will be difficult to ensure that the Amendment goes through. Lincoln totes a strong cast with Danial Day-Lewis taking on the challenging role of Lincoln himself. The supporting cast includes a range of impressive names including Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones and James Spader. Those interested in authenticity will be pleased to know that the film draws inspiration from Doris Kearns Goodwin’s biography of Lincoln. With Spielberg at the helm and a strong cast behind it Lincoln promises to be a superb political drama for anyone interested in the conclusion of the civil war or the last months of Lincoln’s fascinating life. 8 Based on the Spanish short film of the same name, and executively produced by horror icon Guillermo del Toro, Mama is a supernatural thriller that tells the haunting tale of a couple who adopt two little girls they found abandoned in a decrepit cabin in the woods. As they look to begin their new life the family discover that the girls disappeared on the day their mother was murdered and now a supernatural force is intent on claiming them back. This modern haunted-house thriller sees much sought after actress Jessica Chastain star alongside Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, best known for his role as Jaime Lanister for HBO’s acclaimed television series Game of Thrones. Mama is the feature debut for Spanish director Andres Muschietti, the writer/director of the original short. The script was adapted into a feature length screenplay by British author Neil Cross, who penned the excellent BBC series Luther. MONSTERS INC (3D) 8 After exploring the worlds of toys and bugs in the Toy Story films and A Bug’s Life, the award-winning computer animation company Pixar delved into the realm of monsters with its feature Monsters Inc. which will be re-released in eye-popping 3D this January. In the city of Monstropolis, power is generated by the screams of human tots, collected by an ace team of “scarers” who enter the human world through the petrified tykes’ bedroom closets. Top of the tree are James P Sullivan, aka Sully (voiced by Goodman), a blue ogre with a heart of gold, and his lime-green, one-eyed aide Mike (Crystal). But their alternate reality is thrown into chaos when a little girl called Boo follows Sully back to his world, where she and her kind are believed to be toxic... I’m sure both original and new fans will enjoy the gruesome gallery of slimy, tentacled, bulbous beasts hitting our screens once again. Who can resist the shenanigans of Sully and Mike in 3D if not only to refresh our brains in time for the second film in the series Monsters University which is released in July.

8 A few years ago, screenwriter Robbie Fox was a Little League coach who noticed he was getting a lot of unsolicited attention from the mothers of his young players. That was the genesis of Playing for Keeps, with the sport changed to soccer and Gerard Butler cast as a former pro player coaching his son’s team and fending off amorous assaults from a bevy of soccer mums. George Dryer (Butler) has retired from international soccer and relocates to Virginia to try to re-connect with his son and his ex-wife, Stacie (Jessica Biel), who is engaged to a new man. He gets roped into coaching his son’s team and finds that the position improves his relationship with the boy (Noah Lomax). An unexpected perk is that the soccer mums - who include Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Judy Greer - find him ruggedly attractive and start treating him as a sex toy to spice up their boring suburban lives. Mark O’Brien became the inspirational true story which Writer/Director Ben Lewin grounded The Sessions on. John Hawkes finally has been given the chance to prosper on screen as he plays O’Brien, who in his pursuit finds help in the unlikely Father Brendan (William Macy). An absorbing insight into part of humanity.

WARM BODIES 8 Jonathan Levine’s (The Wackness, 50/50) next naughty yet heart-warming romantic comedy involves X-Men First Class star Nicholas Hoult and a huge horde of zombies, which means this is another guaranteed hilarious stab at the rom-zom-com genre that Shaun Of The Dead popularised. Hoult himself is playing a zombie, who becomes enamoured with the (still living) girlfriend of one of his victims. Their romance sets in motion some nasty events which could mean the transformation of zombies all around the world.
