Next up, if you’re looking for much-needed respite from the blowing gales, check in to The Second Best Marigold Hotel in sunny Jaipur, with the likes of Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie, and Dev Patel. The residents are back, this time with fresh faces like Richard Gere and David Strathairn competing for the last vacancy and shaking up the spirited retirees. PASTURES NEW release date 6 February / director Mark Burton, Richard Starzak / starring TBC / Genre: Animation, Adventure, Family

I

n twenty years, Aardman Animations has yet to put a foot wrong. Made famous by Wallace and his ever put-upon hound, Gromit, the British studio has championed the classic art of stop-motion clay animation for a quarter of a century. Shaun the Sheep’s public life began back in 1995, appearing in A Close Shave and then Wallace and Gromit’s Cracking Contraptions in 2002. Having achieved a cult following, his fully-fledged spinoff career began in 2007 with the launch of his own children’s television show. Although not the largest in the flock, clever and mishap-prone Shaun stands as leader to Mossy Bottom Farm’s sheep. Navigating weekly mischief and misadventures, the group must

hide their special skills from their ever-watchful (albeit, dim-witted) nemesis, the Farmer. Even under the Hollywood spotlight, Shaun remains true to his roots. Much like Pixar’s Wall-E, Shaun is a protagonist who will never speak. He communicates entirely through bleating (and the occasional plan drawn intricately on a blackboard). As the flock’s latest antics force the Farmer to leave his home, Shaun and the rest of the gang must venture to the big city to bring him back. In partnership with Sony, Aardman has become a deft hand with feature films, matching the mighty Pixar for wit, fun and family appeal. Expect easygoing slapstick and charming animation to enthral the kids. While deadpan delivery and clever inter-textual winks (the TV show referenced everything from Rocky to Faulty Towers to Psycho) will have the adults matching them laugh for laugh.

Second to none

as the title suggests, the second best exotic Marigold Hotel is a sequel, but director John Madden was quick to distance himself from the much maligned term. “I’ve always insisted on a companion piece”, Madden reveals in an interview with usa today. “sequel smacks of, ‘Hey, we made a good one, it worked, let’s do another’.” While he restores key successful elements, Madden insists, “it certainly isn’t the same movie again,” and recognises a necessity of “wanting the experience to be completely fresh [so that] if somebody simply walked into this film knowing nothing about the first they would be just fine.”

hy settle for ordinary English dotage when you can head off to the exotic bliss of an Indian retirement hotel to spice up your seniority? That’s the unique selling point of Sonny Kapoor’s Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful. It may have been less opulent than advertised, but it slowly developed a charm of its own and has since blossomed into a thriving business that changes the lives of all its residents. After the remarkable success of the first Best Exotic Marigold Hotel film, Fox Searchlight are releasing their first ever sequel to check in with the spirited retirees as they continue to grow old outrageously.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel sees acclaimed Shakespeare In Love director John Madden reunite with his prestigious British ensemble - including Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel, Celia Imrie, among others - to deliver another feel-good comedy sure to warm hearts with its life-affirming themes (and sunny scenery) during the cold weeks of mid-winter. With more quintessential British humour surrounding the expats’ culture clashes and late-in-life romances, this sequel promises to recapture the same sweetness that made its predecessor such a celebrated international hit. Still, Madden adds a dash of freshness with the arrival of three new guests - played by Tamsin Greig, David Straithairn and Richard Gere - who will be forced to compete for the one remaining vacancy in the crowded hotel, as Sonny balances planning a wedding to the love of his life while trying to expand his hotel empire. In 2012, it won “Popular Fiction” and “book of the year” in the uK National book awards, as well as its author being named the “Publishing Person of the year” in Publishers Weekly, causing outrage in the literary world. That same year, e .l. James became amazon uK’s bestselling author of all time, overtaking J.K. rowling. Today, a book which began its life as fan-fiction based in the world of stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, has sold over 100 million copies and been translated into 51 languages. at the height of its success, publisher Vintage claimed that two copies of the trilogy, including Fifty shades darker and Fifty shades Freed, were sold every second. If that wasn’t impressive enough, it spent over 100 weeks on the New york Times’ bestseller list. Whatever the critics think, there seems to be no stopping James’ record-breaking read.

aybe it was between the sheets whilst escaping on a summer getaway; or possibly upon a plush rug in front of a snow-capped log cabin’s crackling fire; maybe you were on a crosscountry train or a transatlantic plane, or even, for the more adventurous amongst you, the bus into town on a busy morning commute. Wherever you did it, millions of you couldn’t get enough of it. What began as a secret whispered between thrill seekers and provocateurs became a worldwide phenomenon seemingly overnight. Who knew reading a book could cause such a stir? Fifty Shades of Grey and its two sequels set the literary world alight with their divisive narratives and erotic content, permeating the general public’s collective consciousness. The pages crammed between those midnight blue covers tempted individuals whose interest had been piqued by giggling voices around the water cooler and mainstream coverage of the book’s meteoric rise. Millions of copies were timidly plucked off bookshelves, and covert internet

orders were placed. Now these tales of unbridled passion will reach a cinematic audience thanks to Sam Taylor-Johnson’s adaptation. The director promises to reinvigorate E. L. James’ material, placing faces to names and bringing forth the visuals that have ran rampant through fans’ minds since 2011. Fifty Shades of Grey follows literature student, Anastasia Steele, on a wild journey of sexual self-discovery. After interviewing the extremely wealthy and enigmatic entrepreneur, Christian Grey, timid Ana begins to realise she wants him more than she has ever wanted any man before. She quickly learns the feeling is mutual. Christian romances Ana with the perks of his affluent lifestyle: luxury cars, expensive gifts, and helicopter rides which weave between the Seattle skyline - a stark contrast to Ana’s mundane dayto-day life working behind a counter. However, as their relationship grows more intense with every meeting, Ana sees there is far more to the debonair Mr. Grey than meets the eye. “I don’t do romance, my tastes are very singular… you wouldn’t understand,” states Grey. But soon Anastasia will be enlightened. Sultry teaser trailers - emphasis on tease scored by the melodies of Beyoncé, have already set audiences’ pulses racing, hinting at what awaits viewers on the other side of their local multiplex’s screen doors. But the story’s journey from page to screen has not been without its own troubles. The enlistment of Sons of Anarchy and Pacific Rim star, Charlie Hunnam, fell through days after the announcement of his casting in the role of the eponymous Christian Grey. However, the news that Northern Irish actor Jamie Dornan had been tasked with embodying Mr. Grey and his many quirks and

kinks in the wake of Hunnam’s departure was met with a bubbling undercurrent of excitement. Who was this tall, dark and handsome stranger stepping into the shoes of one of the 21st century’s most infamous and mysterious individuals? Fans of thrilling BBC drama The Fall will be well-acquainted with Dornan and his ability to portray controversial characters. Starring as charming serial killer, Paul Spector, Dornan highlighted his ability to exhibit the duality of a man who walks a common path by day before racing into the furthermost extremes of the human condition by night. The enthralling star also somehow managed to earn heartthrob status despite portraying a deeply troubled killer hell-bent on satisfying his own twisted desires and fetishes. Themes of sexuality and control rose to the surface in The Fall as Dornan went head-to-head with the female detective who hunted him. This time, such themes will undoubtedly once again present themselves in both an emotional and physical context, but Dornan will get much closer to his female counterpart. Promising actress Dakota Johnson beat out many leading ladies for the opportunity to portray Anastasia and her fall beneath the addictive spell of Grey - her meek persona providing the perfect juxtaposition to the intimidating billionaire. Whether its notorious narrative is your idea of agony or ecstasy, the stage is set for this sleek and thrilling picture to prove that James’ prose still possesses the potency to shock and delight. With an exciting cast of young stars and proven talent, an intriguing director, and an inescapable reputation, Fifty Shades of Grey will once again dominate the conversation this Valentine’s Day. Jeremy Renner leads an all-star cast in a thriller based on the remarkable true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb. Webb stumbles onto a story which leads to the shady origins of the men who started the crack epidemic on the nation’s streets... and further alleges that the CIA was aware of major dealers who were smuggling cocaine into the U.S., and using the profits to arm rebels fighting in Nicaragua.
