with Vangelis’ iconic music, the Gielgud Theatre converted into athletics stadia and the film’s original director, Hugh Hudson, together with Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson producing; and the Brit-flick “Fast Girls”, a modern day Chariots of Fire, having hit the screens last month, (the story of a women’s British relay team ‘going for gold’ – though not at the Olympics according to co-writer Noel Clarke (Kidulthood), because the IOC refused permission for the Olympic name and symbols to be used in the film) this is a cinematically appropriate time to look at the changes in how we view the Olympics that have taken place over the last 116 years. In fact it was twenty-nine years after the modern Olympics were inaugurated in 1896 that an entertainment film first appropriated the drama of the Olympic Games as a key plot device. ‘Nine And Three-Fifths Seconds’ (1925) starred three-time US Olympic athlete and 1920 100 metre Gold medal winner, Charlie Paddock, in a triumph over adversity drama that climaxes with the young man winning both Olympic Gold and the girl he loves. Paddock also raced in the 1924 Olympics and features as a character in ‘Chariots of Fire’. Coverage of the Olympics prior to the television age was primarily the preserve of the newsreels which provided audiences with ‘highlights only’ coverage of the action. In 1936 Leni Riefenstahl filmed the Berlin Olympics and produced a feature-length documentary ‘Olympia Part One: Festival of the Nations’ (1938). What was intended by Riefenstahl as a propaganda tool for the Third Reich was somewhat diminished as a depiction of Aryan

After World War II and into the 1970’s television coverage was only available in grainy black & white. The IOC commissioned colour featuredocumentaries to record each Olympiad which were only released a year or more after the Games. The most well-known of these films is Tokyo Olympiad (1965) which was to have been directed by Akira Kurosawa but when he demanded too much control of the Games themselves Kon Ichikawa took the helm. The resulting 170 minute film is still an absorbing look at the Games in an era before sponsors’ logos became ubiquitous. By the 1972 Munich Olympics global television was capable of providing moment-by-moment live relays of the action and so producer David Wolper invited eight renowned directors (including John Schlesinger, Mai Zetterling, Milos Forman and Ichikawa) to focus on an aspect of the sports that intrigued them. Unfortunately, political events overtook the sport and the Munich Olympics are now mostly remembered through the cinematic prisms of Kevin Macdonald’s superb documentary ‘One Day in September’ (1999) and Steven Spielberg’s ‘Munich’ (2005). As we approach London 2012 British filmmaking talent is directing the show itself with Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 127 Hours) and Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Reader) supervising the opening and closing ceremonies of both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Games themselves will be covered by over 5,000 hours of BBC broadcasting and the subsequent compilations of television footage.

8 Peter Morgan, Oscar-nominated writer of acclaimed films Frost/Nixon, The Last King Of Scotland and The Queen, weaves together the lives of a huge variety of different people through their unlikely yet totally realistic relationships to form this ensemble dramatic thriller, which is guaranteed to resonate with as many types of people as it portrays. Inspired by Arthur Schnitzler’s classic La Ronde, Morgan and director Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener) link the characters in different cities and countries from all over the globe. Opening in Vienna, the film truly does go 360 degrees as it travels through Paris, London, Rio, Phoenix, Denver and Bratislava. If you want to travel the world but don’t quite have the budget for it, then you should give 360 a watch. Some beautiful people accompany the beautiful visuals, including Rachel Weisz, Jude Law and, perhaps to a lesser extent, Anthony Hopkins. This stirring film will add another layer to the classic intertwining-stories formula that made Love Actually and Crash so successful. Matt Brigden

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (3D) 8 After being excluded from the wildly successful Avengers Assemble due to Marvel no longer owning the film rights to Peter Parker and his web-slinging alter ego, The Amazing Spider-Man returns Spidey to the forefront of audiences’ superhero obsession and this time in Real 3D. Despite the promising beginnings of Sam Raimi’s recent Spider-Man films, the wackiness which the renowned horror director brought to the table - most notably ‘the jazz dance scene’ of Raimi’s third offering (see YouTube) - began to alienate audiences and fans alike, Tobey Maguire’s interpretation of Parker becoming less comic book and increasingly more comical. Now, with Andrew Garfield under the mask, a script with a darker tone, and an origins story which remains true to the Marvel actual origin, director Marc Webb has all the components to set your Spidey senses tingling with this latest incarnation. Bolstered by the prospect that Parker must overcome in facing ‘The Lizard’ and Emma Stone’s portrayal of the web-head’s first love Gwen Stacy, The Amazing Spider-Man may leave The Avengers pining for everyone’s favourite arachnid. If the recent string of film

franchise reboots is anything to go by, then, undoubtedly, yes. Today the film industry lives and dies by the three R’s: remake, reboot and reinterpretation. However, these terms are no longer synonymous with studios trading upon our nostalgia, but rather the chance to tweak and improve, rewriting the wrongs of cinema’s missed opportunities and deadliest sins. Last Christmas audiences were confronted with David Fincher’s uncompromising remake of The

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, legitimising the old adage that second is, in fact, best - at least when it comes to interpreting source material. Fincher’s characteristically accomplished direction, combined with superb casting, reinvigorated audiences’ interest in Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy after the lacklustre original Swedish films. This positive trend has continued into 2012 as high profile reboots threaten to outshine their original incarnations. The release of Total Recall this August will be the first of many late ‘80s and ‘90s action flick remakes, including the forthcoming Robocop and Judge Dredd films. Whereas the 1990 original dumbed down the source material of literary juggernaut Philip K. Dick, hitched its wagon to Arnie and placed a strict emphasis on action, the remake has vowed to display a deep and overtly political story, honouring the author whose ‘Do Androids

Dream of Electric Sheep’ acted as the basis of Ridley Scott’s phenomenal Blade Runner. Earlier this year the long awaited Avengers adaptation not only smashed worldwide box-office records but rekindled interest in a Justice League of America film, beginning with a Green Lantern reboot in the wake of the woeful first film, whilst also whetting our appetites for the feast of comic book treats resting upon the horizon. The imminent releases of The Amazing Spider-man and The Dark Knight Rises promise to be inescapable worldwide events and deservedly so, with Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy comfortably carrying the accolade of one of the greatest reboots of all time. Give many a director $200 million and they’ll throw enough visual effects, A-list names and intricately choreographed stunts at the canvas to give you an enjoyable ‘edge of your seat’ Saturday afternoon. Give Nolan the same and he’ll paint you a

masterpiece with a superhero for his muse. Nolan has legitimised a popculture icon that spent four decades being undermined by individuals who couldn’t grasp that Batman, despite being the tortured soul that he is, is also meant to be a badass. After Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher reduced the characters of the Batman universe into absurd caricatures - not belonging on the audacious pages of a graphic novel never mind a cinema screen - Nolan and his cherry-picked cast were entrusted to finally give fans the reinterpretation they truly deserved. Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne took the madness of his predecessors, Clooney and Kilmer, and replaced it with strict method, exhibiting the same physical and mental rigours as his standout roles in pictures such as American Psycho and The Machinist. Heath Ledger’s Joker provided a refreshingly brutal and sociopathic remedy to the wisecracks of Jim

Carrey’s day-glow Riddler and the bizarre musical interludes of Schwarzenegger’s unspeakably misjudged Mr. Freeze. Now, Tom Hardy’s interpretation of Bane has promised to stay true to the muscle-bound mastermind’s DC Comics origins, creating a truly intimidating villain of the piece rather than mimicking the juiced up lap-dog of Batman and Robin - who wasn’t capable of intelligent thought, never mind composing Gotham’s end of days and breaking The Bat. Initially, the filmic re-imagination of much-loved source material, whether it is a comic book, literary fiction or an existing movie franchise, may prove hard to swallow and success isn’t guaranteed. But, when the combination of Hollywood megabucks, a dedicated director and an impassioned cast collide, they have the ability to bring what lies upon the page to life and revive a dying franchise in spectacular fashion.

8 Although Jason Bourne’s story may be over, his legacy remains. In the aftermath of events from Identity, Supremacy and Ultimatum, the CIA faces political and public backlash as elements of ‘Project Treadstone’ come to light. Attempting to manage the fallout, ‘Project Outcome’ (Treadstone’s successor) is shut down, with all evidence to be destroyed. Outcome operative, Aaron Cross and Stephanie Snyder (Weisz), a doctor who helped create the new breed assassins, must escape relentless pursuit from the CIA’s Agent Byer (Norton). Anyone hoping for a cameo by Mr Damon will be disappointed; this is the same franchise, but with a new life, welcoming both a new lead character and new director. However, with Tony Gilroy – the scribe who adapted Robert Ludlum’s last three novels – now behind the camera, it is in safe hands, so expect the high powered close combat and cross city car chases that typified previous entries. Meanwhile Renner, famous for his breakout role in The Hurt Locker and recently as Hawkeye in Avengers Assemble, should offer both the raw physicality and emotional depth that we came to associate with Bourne. 8 A departure from the Pixar norm, Brave is a film which promises something for everyone. Kids are catered for with wackiness and warmth in equal measure and adults are awarded action and an awesome cast of British actors, which includes Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Robbie Coltrane and Julie Walters to name just four. Brave follows Princess Merida, a young Scottish girl who’s determined to make her own path in life and lift the restrictions placed on her as a female Royal family member. Merida unfortunately makes a bad choice that results in nationwide chaos, and she has to rely on her bravery and newfound archery skills to undo a nasty curse. Pixar regulars Pete Docter (Up), Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo) and John Lasseter (Toy Story 1, 2 and 3) take producer roles, while Brenda Chapman - who was the first American woman to direct an animation for a major studio (The Prince Of Egypt) - heads up the directorial duties. Brave is the first of 13 Pixar movies that’s had a woman at the helm and, shockingly, Merida is also the first ever female main protagonist. Matt Brigden

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

8 Four years after the hugely successful release of The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan returns for the third and final act in his incredible Batman saga. It follows on eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, which concluded with Batman on the run from the police, having taken responsibility for the death of Harvey Dent aka Two Face. As usual, director Christopher Nolan is remaining extremely tight-lipped on any and all plot details. However, what is known is that Tom Hardy will take centre stage as the film’s lead villain, channelling his version of the super strong, super intelligent criminal mastermind Bane. Plus, Anne Hathaway will be doing her utmost to steal the show as fan favorite Catwoman, while Liam Neeson will reprise his role as Ra’s Al Ghul for a small cameo appearance. Admittedly, it’s anyone’s guess as to exactly what The Dark Knight Rises will entail, but in all likelihood it will be packed full of jaw-dropping set pieces, bonecrunching fight scenes and a high concept Hollywood storyline that will no doubt blow you away! SEUSS’ THE LORAX (3D) 8 A children’s comedy based on Dr. Seuss’ book of the same name, The Lorax was originally released on 2nd March in the US to coincide with the 108th anniversary of Seuss’ birth. It is the fourth feature based on a Seuss book, yet the first to be given the 3D treatment. Zac Efron voices Ted, a 12-year-old who resides in Thneedville, a walled city where everything except the inhabitants is artificial. Anxious to please the object of his affections, Audrey (Swift), who dreams of seeing a real tree, he goes to see the Once-ler (Helms) to find out what happened to their city. The old hermit tells Ted of the Lorax (DeVito), who was once a guardian of the city before the forest was destroyed and the area deemed inhabitable. Together, they realise what must be done to save their city. Written by the duo responsible for Horton Hears a Who!, The Lorax is the second film adaptation of the book. The focus on Ted and Audrey’s friendship drives the fun and absorbing film, while the prominence of environmental issues makes the story as relevant as ever. Jen Evans

8 The sequel to Stallone’s 2010 bloodbath, The Expendables 2 throws even more action heroes into the fray. Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris pad out the already impressive roster of action movie legends, while The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth adds some much-needed youth into the mix, which already includes Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture and Terry Crews. When the Expendables are called back together for one more mission, the money is too good to refuse. However, when one of the team is killed in action, they are unstoppable in their quest for revenge. Expect explosions, bad one-liners and, hopefully, more screen time for Arnie and Willis, both of whom deserve greater roles than the first film gave them. If the first film is anything to go by, The Expendables 2 will be a glorious patchwork of fiery destruction, gratuitous amounts of CGI blood and large testosteronefuelled men fighting and punching each other in the face. Emotional? No. A violent, steroid-fuelled throwback to the action films of old? Hell yes. Definitely one of the biggest action movies of the year. Alex Dibb

ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT (3D) 8 The Ice Age saga has been a long-running success in the family comedy genre since its beginnings in 2002 and, with the fourth instalment due for release this July, the series doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon. Ice Age: Continental Drift will be the first film in the franchise not to be directed by Carlos Saldanha, so we can expect to see a fresh take on events this time around. The film continues the story of Manny, Sid and Diego, a mammoth, sloth and saber- toothed tiger respectively, as they elude the dangers of the Ice Age. Continental Drift follows these mismatched heroes as they overcome a new obstacle: the splitting of the continents and the ensuing chaos. Voice talents Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo are back to voice the lovable lead characters and they are supported once again by Queen Latifah and Seann William Scott. With this strong cast and the stellar animation that we’ve come to expect from the Ice Age films, Continental Drift promises to be a superb family film for those seeking a humorous escape from the summer heat. Loosely based on Tatum’s early career as a male stripper, Magic Mike (Tatum) is a super- successful stripper who befriends young dancer Adam (Pettyfer) and teaches him the tricks of the trade, how to make money and how to talk to women. Sure to have you transfixed from the simmering start, the story traces the two men’s friendship, Mike’s blossoming relationship with Joanna (Munn) and Mike’s desire to find fulfilment outside of the strip club world. And naturally, the drama is spliced with many scenes of Tatum’s and McConaughey’s sculpted torsos. This feel-good film is perfect for a night out with the girls. 8 Produced by the legendary Sam Raimi, The Possession is a spine-tingling retelling of a Los Angeles Times article called Jinx in a Box, which centred on a small wooden box that sold on eBay in 2004. Inside the box were two locks of hair, one granite slab, one dried rosebud, one goblet, two wheat pennies, one candlestick and, allegedly, one dibbuk, a spirit popular in Yiddish folklore. An interesting premise for what looks set to be one hell of a scary movie! Clyde (Morgan) and Stephanie Brenek (Sedgwick) become increasingly concerned about their youngest daughter Em (Calis) when she becomes obsessed with a small wooden box she purchased at a yard sale (I’m not sure an eBay purchase would have had the same effect). Em’s behaviour becomes increasingly erratic and the couple soon discover that the box was built to contain a dibbuk: a spirit from Yiddish folklore that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host. Many films about demonic possession have come and gone since The Exorcist - but, with scenes that promise to scare you senseless, The Possession is a must-see for all horror aficionados. When she is arrested in an aborted bombing attempt in London, she is given a choice by a British intelligence officer (Owen): turn against her family and colleagues to become an informant or desert her children and spend the rest of her life in prison. Set against the backdrop of 1990s’ Northern Ireland, the film opened to high praise at the American Sundance Film Festival, and has gone on to receive positive responses from critics across the world. Margot has to seriously weigh up the pros and cons of all the potential outcomes of this new and totally unexpected attraction. Renowned for her expressive independent films and her political activism, director Sarah Polley instils the film with a stirring emotional sensitivity that everyone can relate to in some way, which is certainly a first for a film starring Seth Rogen. Speaking of Rogen who, as a side note has slimmed down massively, this bittersweet film marks a welcome departure from his traditionally rude and crude style and gives him a new angle, which lends him a depth that nobody could have predicted was in his repertoire.

Ted (voiced by MacFarlane) remains his best friend throughout his childhood and well into his adult years - that is, until John meets the girl of his dreams and the two have to compete. John must choose whether he wants to stay with his gorgeous girlfriend Lori (Kunis) or keep his friendship with his crude and inappropriate best friend, Ted, whose lifestyle gets in the way of John’s attempts to keep both happy. 8 It has been over 40 years since The Three Stooges have been on our television screens and now, after ten years of casting problems, the Farrelly brothers are releasing a feature film chronicling the outrageous escapades of Curly (Sasso), Larry (Hayes) and Moe (Diamantopoulos). The film is structured into three acts or episodes, each of which tells its own story. The first episode centres on the Stooges’ time at their childhood orphanage, Moe’s reluctance to leave Curly and Larry, and how after 25 years they are still there. In the second episode, the trio inadvertently find themselves in the middle of a murder plot in which they are implicated. In the third and final chapter, the unfortunate threesome end up being part of the hugely popular US reality TV show Jersey Shore. This resurrection of The Three Stooges promises to be every bit as ridiculous, outrageous, and downright silly as the original show - however, as it’s been such a long time since they’ve been on screen and with the action being set in modern times, something new could be brought to the slapstick genre. The supposed memories of a life as a spy are just what Quaid needs. When the procedure goes wrong, however, Quaid finds himself on the run. Believing he is now a spy, Quaid finds himself caught up in a rebellion, not knowing whose side he is truly on. It has been more than 20 years since Arnold Schwarzenegger blew away sci-fi fans in Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 original. Now Colin Farrell steps into Arnie’s shoes in one of the biggest sci-fi action flicks of the year. Director Len Wiseman’s take on the Philip K. Dick story crosses elements of Blade Runner with the original film, offering us a dystopian future that is both familiar and welcome. The trip to Mars from the Arnie original has been dropped for some more strong political overtones. Oh, and some Fifth Elementstyle action thrown in for good measure. Ian J. Martin

An emotional wreck after his rejections from the local police force, Franklin (Hill) joins in a bid to solve his problems, while Jarmarcus (Ayoade) is the nerd of the group. The male bonding time is rudely interrupted, however, when Ewan discovers aliens in the neighbourhood. Accidentally stumbling upon an alien plot to take over the world, the unlikely heroes soon find themselves defending the planet from invasion. Saving the world, it appears, is all in a dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work for The Watch. Amy Ralfe

8 Cornish writer/director Nigel Cole is perhaps best known for his British films Made in Dagenham and Calendar Girls, so his latest film The Wedding Video should be reminiscent of these, particularly as Cole has reunited with Tim Firth who was the screenwriter for Calendar Girls. The cast features comedians Robert Webb and Rufus Hound, so expect the drama to be full of laughs. The film is not so much about a wedding video but will, in fact, take the form of the actual ceremonial film in its final and fully edited version, complete with interviews and music. The footage will be used under the conceit that it is filmed by the best man (Hound) and the finished product is intended to be presented to the bride (Punch) as a gift from the groom (Webb). There will, of course, be chaos: no filmic wedding goes off without a hitch and this will be no exception. The competitive and often vicious nature of British weddings relayed in this film will ensure that this may be one of the most outlandish British films in some time. Daniel Buckley

The Regal Refurbishment Is Go Go Go! In the last issue we were bursting with exciting in unveiling the grand plans for the refurbishment of the Regal Cinema in Redruth. We are now several months in and pleased to inform you we are making fantastic progress and just walking around the site you really get a feel for how truly special the complex will be once finished. • The 500 seater cinema - theatre will give Merlin the largest 3D auditorium in Cornwall, perfect for the epic releases on the horizon such as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey which may very well be our first major 3D release once we reopen. We have already started discussing the variety of regular live entertainment we hope to bring to the Regal and hope to attract people from all over the county to enjoy Music, Comedy, Theatre and much more! Take a look below to see just how this historic building is being lovingly brought back to life.

• Donʼt forget that while the project is running Screen 7 and our fabulous Bar & Restaurant will remain open serving our normal array of mouthwatering delights.
