8 With Hollywood re-boots of old franchises very much in vogue at the moment, it should come as no surprise to see The A-Team, one of the ‘80s most iconic TV series, reinvented for the big screen. Boasting an entirely new cast, this gritty modern update sees rogue mercenaries Hannibal Smith, Murdock, Face and B.A. Baracus setting out to clear their names having been set up for a crime they didn’t commit. Grittier than its predecessor it may be, but this re-imagining is still very much in keeping with the overthe-top nature of the original series. With tanks falling from helicopters, gunfights and explosions aplenty, it’s hardly a restrained affair and, whilst the faces may have changed, the iconic characters and catchphrases remain very much the same and the impressive cast, including the likes of Liam Neeson, The Hangover’s Bradley Cooper and District 9’s Sharlto Copley, look well equipped to deliver some memorable performances. Fans of the original series and new audiences alike will find the newly revamped band of outlaw mercenaries more than capable of packing a punch when The A-Team hits cinemas in July. Paul Weedon

CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF PUSSY GALORE (3D)

Michael Clarke Duncan, Chris O’Donnell, James Marsden, Neal Patrick Harris release date 4th August 2010 CONTENT icons

8 Ever since 2001’s action comedy caper Cats & Dogs cast our four-legged friends in a whole new light, it seems the war between the furry adversaries has only escalated. Now the fate of mankind rests in the hands or should that be paws - of man’s best friend. In her quest for world domination, slinky sphinx Kitty Galore has gone rogue from cat spy organization MEOW and there isn’t enough catnip on Earth to satisfy this sour puss’s hunger for revenge. In an effort to stop the dastardly Galore, super pooch Diggs and his crack force of canine spies must do the unthinkable and form an uneasy alliance with their feline counterparts. Truce in place and perilous pigeon Seamus lending a wing, the race is on to stop Kitty’s diabolical plan before it’s too late. With a veritable wealth of film and television’s most recognisable personalities including Chris O’Donnell and How I Met Your Mother’s Neal Patrick Harris contributing their vocal and acting talents, this action-packed sequel looks set to be an unmissable summer showdown. Things are definitely about to get hairy. Brody Rossiter

OLD DOG. NEW TRICKS. The Expendables unites a stellar cast of ass-kicking heroes past and present. Chris Wasey investigates the action movie to end all action movies

8

Love him or loathe him, Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone has quite a legacy. Straddling the ‘80s and ‘90s like a muscle bound colossus, he became a legend within the cinematic weapon of choice: all-American action. Now, after commercial success with sequel-reboots Rambo (4)

and Rocky Balboa (5), Sylvester Stallone has taken it upon himself to resurrect the ‘classic’ action movie. The task was monumental: bring together every gun-toting icon from 30 years of action under one glorious high-octane umbrella. The Expendables is a throwback to the old days: real pyrotechnics, macho soldiers and large body counts. In plotline too, it is the pinnacle of high concept simplicity: a team of hired guns

travel to an unnamed South American country to overthrow ruthless military dictator, General Garza (David Zayas) and his circle, including the corrupt CIA agent James Monroe (Eric Roberts) and his bodyguard Dan Paine (Steve Austin). Once there, however, they are betrayed from within. Each member of the ensemble team brings with them a unique set of skills. Barney ‘The Schizo’ Ross (Sylvester Stallone) is the team’s leader, a man without emotion who approaches each mission expecting it to be the last. His second in command, Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), is a former SAS operative and knife-wielding prodigy. The rest of the crew is just as colourful: Yin Yang (Jet Li), a master of hand to hand combat, Toll Road (Randy Couture), a skilled demolition expert and Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), an expert sniper who struggles with his inner demons. Granted, there are no Oscar winners amongst them, but the explosive pedigree is beyond reproach. A veritable who’s who of ‘80s, ‘90s and new millennium action movies, some stars shone brightly before burning out, others honed their skills in gladiatorial sports, while a few moulded franchises that still merit sequels today. Dolph Lundgren and Eric Roberts fall into the first category. After

spectacular success with films such as Universal Soldier, Masters of the Universe and Best of the Best, this big-budget vehicle could be the last hurrah for both men. At the other end of the timeline, Austin and Couture are relatively new to B-movies fame, but as former WWE and UFC world champions respectively, they were probably the toughest men on The Expendables set. Although these combative upstarts are relatively new to the movie scene, other members of the cast had the honour of filling the noughties action void. While Arnie was off governing, Sly went on hiatus and Bruce started writing a Die Hard that involved no swearing, Jet Li set about establishing himself as a martial arts star in China. After exploding onto the Hollywood scene by kicking Mel Gibson’s ass in Lethal Weapon 4, he has spent ten years jumping back and forth between majestic Chinese productions (Hero, Fearless) and brasher Hollywood pictures (Romeo Must Die, The One). Having shared the screen as War-ing adversaries in 2007, Li and Jason Statham are now comrades in arms. Statham has come a long way since his cheeky-chappy Lock Stock persona. One of the youngest men in the cast, he has spawned two franchises (Crank, The

Transformer) and is the current torchbearer for action B movies in the vein of Stallone’s Cobra and Cliffhanger. Even with a suspect American accent, he oozes comedic charm and cold brutality in equal measure. Of course, as writer and director, Sylvester Stallone is the real driving force behind The Expendables project. Although he would eventually become one of the action movie ‘big three’ for 20 years, Sly’s acting career had a rather tepid start. It wasn’t until he wrote, directed and starred in Rocky that people took note. From this platform, he went on to star in dozens of action films, such as Demolition Man, Judge Dredd, Assassins - each threaded with under appreciated wry humour, and each ‘good’ films in their own right. While some missteps (Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot) and the occasional mumbled line have marred his reputation somewhat, one need only watch Copland or Rocky II for a reminder of his genuine acting clout. Of course, the elephants in the room are hard to ignore. For all the star power involved, two names are notably absent from the list. What is an action ensemble without John McClane or The Terminator? Well, lament not. Even though Planet Hollywood is long behind them, old friends Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis both make cameos. For the first time in silver screen history, all three men share a scene together. Expect a banter-fest to please trivia fans as they litter scenery with references to the glory days. This potentially great saga has one down side. So that Barney Ross could lead The Expendables, Stallone was forced to ‘retire’ plans for Rambo 5. The world has changed: Bush is gone, the Soviet Union has fallen, and ‘Nam veterans just don’t fit into ‘The Schizo’s’ team. So, with a heavy heart we mourn John Rambo’s passing, but with bated breath await the future. The king is dead. Long live the king. The Expendables is released on 20th August

8 Based on the popular series of books by US writer Jeff Kinney, Diary of a Wimpy Kid promises to be the perfect summer holiday watch for the whole family. With German director Thor Freudenthal (responsible for the 2009 family comedy, Hotel for Dogs) at the helm, plenty of laughs are guaranteed. Eleven-year old Greg Heffley (Gordon) is determined to become the most popular kid at middle school. In order to achieve his objective, Greg devises several attention-grabbing stunts which all backfire miserably. Also threatening to hold Greg back is his best friend, Rowley Jefferson (Capron), who is perceived as a dorky Mummy’s boy. Despite Rowley protecting him from his thuggish older brother, Greg is worried that his friend’s uncoolness will embarrass him at their new school. All the while, Greg enthusiastically keeps a diary, believing, “I’ll be famous one day, but for now I’m stuck in middle school with a bunch of morons.” Painfully observant, this film will make you laugh out loud and cringe with recognition! 8 Chances are, if you’ve not yet entered the world of Stieg Larsson’s international bestselling Millennium trilogy, you’ve seen everyone and their great aunt reading it on the train, at the bus stop or on their lunch break. Director Daniel Alfredson brings the second installment to cinemas with this story of deep-rooted corruption, picking up a year after The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Nyqvist) hasn’t seen computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Rapace) for the past twelve months, though if the film follows the book we’ll be treated to background details of what makes the enigmatic punkish heroine tick. On the verge of exposing underage sex trafficking between prominent members of Swedish society and their Eastern European contacts, Blomkvist discovers that two fellow journalists have been murdered, and Salander’s prints are on the weapon. Seemingly her only friend, Blomkvist is certain of Salander’s innocence and aims to make it known. A suspenseful and dark rollercoaster ride through the depraved underworld of modern-day urban Sweden will lure Larsson fans back to their seats for another round. Cheyenne Hill

8 With films including Happy Gilmore, Don’t Mess With The Zohan and Big Daddy - to name a few - already under their belts, Dennis Dugan and leading man Adam Sandler’s past collaborations have proven to be like Marmite with the critics. In Grown Ups, the latest instalment from the pair, it appears they are staying true to their art. Upon hearing the news of the passing of their high school basketball coach, five friends and former teammates decide to reunite and spend the 4th July weekend together with their families. Against the lake house backdrop where they celebrated their championship all those years ago, the circumstances provide plenty of ammunition for a light-hearted and pure comedy that looks at the theme of growing older - but not necessarily growing up. With supporting actors Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, Dave Spade and Kevin James, a small family of comic talent starts to appear, each having worked with Sandler and most with Dugan before. With a starry line-up and an extensive comedy résumé between them, Grown Ups has the potential to be one of the funniest films of the season. Jodie Perry

INCEPTION

8 One of this summer’s most highly anticipated blockbusters, Inception is the latest masterpiece by The Dark Knight’s Christopher Nolan. Although plot details have long been kept under wraps, it’s now been revealed that Leonardo DiCaprio will be playing a skilled thief called Dom Cobb who travels the globe and into the infinite world of dreams. This rare and illegal talent sees him turn into an international fugitive. However, he is given one last chance at redemption. He has to pull off the seemingly impossible reverse of what he has been doing plant a thought inside someone’s mind rather than take it: inception. It will be the perfect crime. Nolan is on track to become our very own James Cameron - managing seamless effects while drawing perfect performances from his actors. Inception promises to be no different. What thankfully separates him from Cameron, however, is that you’re guaranteed more inventiveness than the likes of Avatar’s infamous ‘Unobtainium’. If you only see one film this summer, make sure it’s Inception - where your mind is the scene of the crime. Matthew Brigden

8 Of all the 1980s films to be plucked for the remake treatment, the much-loved 1984 flick, The Karate Kid, is perhaps one of the more controversial. However, this is no straightforward remake and fans old and new might just love it. 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith, son of Will and impressive young star of The Pursuit of Happyness) has his world turned upside down when his mother’s job lands them in China. He falls for classmate Mei Ying but the culture clash makes things difficult, especially when he becomes the target of bully, Cheng. Kung fu is the central sport here and, having little knowledge of the art, Dre finds himself a lousy opponent. Enter maintenance man, Mr Han (Chan), a master of kung fu and Dre’s gateway to self-confidence and acceptance. Everyone loves an underdog and watching Dre triumph over adversity is sure to entertain viewers. Add some gorgeous scenery reminiscent of Zhang Yimou’s hits Hero and House of Flying Daggers, and The Karate Kid could be one of the surprise hits of the summer. Emma Farley

8 Set to be a monumental movie in determining the future of blockbusters, director James Mangold’s sexy new action-comedy focuses on the adventures of a fugitive couple. Cruise plays Roy Miller, a secret agent charged with protecting a scientist from a variety of bad guy assassins, while Diaz plays June Havens, the gorgeous girl-next-door who literally bumps into him - twice - at Wichita Airport and finds herself swept along for the ride. Knight and Day follows their exploits across the globe - from Spain to Jamaica - as they embark on a highoctane mission, which erupts into a maze of doublecrosses, close escapes and often deadly situations. Knight and Day marks the first time Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz have starred together on-screen since the 2001 film Vanilla Sky. With all the components for an explosive 3D film, this action flick appears rather more old school. In 2D, with a smart script, a comic twist and plenty of star power, prepare for an entertaining ride. Jennifer Clayton

8 M. Night Shyamalan is back once again, but this time he’s making a departure from his usual brand of contemporary supernatural drama to bring us this adaptation of the much-loved Japanese anime series Avatar: The Last Airbender. It looks like Shyamalan’s version will remain very true to its original source, as it is expected to be the first of a trilogy (following in the footsteps of the television series). Air, Water, Fire and Earth are the four nations that inhabit the world of The Last Airbender. Each nation has the ability to control the element it has been named after. When the Fire nation starts a war with the others, only one person can stand in their way: Aang (Ringer) the Avatar, who has the ability to control all of the elements. He teams up with the young siblings Katara (Peltz), a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka (Rathbone), in order to put a stop to the Fire nation’s plans of domination. The Last Airbender is the beginning of a magical journey in an imaginative and wonderfully designed world. Ryan Cope

8 After his recent success with Marley & Me, actor Owen Wilson has decided that dogs are, in fact, man’s best friend. Teaming up once again with Shanghai Noon director Tom Dey, Wilson provides the voice for the lovable yet ever so clumsy Great Dane, Marmaduke. Originally shooting to fame in Brad Anderson’s worldwide comic strip, Marmaduke leaps into the film world, leaving a trail of canine chaos. Following The Winslow family’s move from Kansas to Orange County, the Duke and crazy cat Carlos attempt to fit into their new, shiny neighborhood. Unfortunately for the Duke, that isn’t so easy to do when you’re a supersized teenage dog who has a tendency to cause havoc wherever he roams. However, it’s not all doom and gloom for our favourite pooch. Finding his niche amongst a mixed breed pack of dogs, the Duke begins to fit in and even has time for a spot of surfing with his newfound feline friends. With voices from Fergie, Kiefer Sutherland and Steve Coogan, Marmaduke promises to be perfect summer family fun. Liz Woods

8 Now this is a remake audiences will really be able to get their teeth into. I’m not talking Jaws I’m talking the classic B-movie: Piranha. The original 1978 film was undoubtedly the most successful and enjoyable of films to cash in on the success of Jaws. After all, you’re not likely to recognise other Jaws-inspired flicks, such as Barracuda (1978) and Great White (1981), unless you really know your films. Directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes), this impressive remake not only has digital piranhas, it’s in 3D. Unlike the original, which saw a group of mutant piranhas escape from a military base, this time the piranhas emerge from an underwater fissure that appears after an earthquake, unleashing scores of the prehistoric creatures that vanished over two million years ago. All that’s needed is a hefty dose of fish food, which is lucky (for the piranhas anyway) because Lake Victoria is teeming with sexy Americans on their spring break. Prepare for chilling and action-packed fun, perfect for the 3D experience. Justin Vingoe

8 He can make himself invisible, he can outwit, outrun and outgun the most experienced and deadly human warriors on the planet, but his most impressive quality has to be his resilience. The greenblooded hunter was left face down in the dirt after a good old Arnie butt-kicking in the original, but since when did down mean out in Hollywood? The Predator has resurfaced on numerous occasions, sniping his way through a multitude of films, and the next instalment looks like a beast. A group of dangerous individuals, led by mercenary gunman Royce (Brody), find themselves in the middle of an alien game preserve, and they quickly realise that they are the game. This time, the humans are outnumbered, and they have to learn to work as a team in order to survive. Director Nimród Antal (Vacancy) is no stranger to suspense and will ensure that Predators is a nail-biting ride from start to finish. Joe Cole

8 Justin Bartha, the loveable groom from The Hangover, teams up with acting veteran Catherine Zeta-Jones to bring us this amusing romantic comedy. When Sandy (Zeta-Jones) discovers her husband is cheating on her, she leaves him and moves to New York with their two kids. Looking for a rebound from her marriage, she ends up sleeping with the 25-year-old nanny, Aram (Bartha), whom she’s hired to look after her children. Things start to get a little complicated, however, when their so-called harmless fun gets disrupted by some deeper feelings, which is made even more problematic by the age difference. Zeta-Jones is a big name with plenty of experience while Bartha, who has appeared in a few notable films (National Treasure, National Treasure: Book of Secrets), has shown promising talent in his roles to date. Whether the fusion of star power and youthful talent will translate into sizzling onscreen chemistry remains to be seen. The Rebound promises to be an enjoyable romantic comedy, enriched with themes of separation, moving on and forbidden love. Ryan Cope

THE RUNAWAYS 8 In the midst of filming the Twilight Saga, both Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning found time to take on another, more down to earth project. The pair star as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie in the portrayal of the legendary 1970s’ all-girl punk band The Runaways and, by the look of things, they have pulled off the style, attitude and sound of the band faultlessly. Joan and Cherie met when they were young, rebellious teens and, with the help of rock impresario Kim Fowley, in a matter of years they became huge international stars. The film follows their journey, focusing on their meteoric rise to fame and their friendship, which is finally tested to the max. The directorial attributes of music video queen, Floria Sigismondi, are sure to be a highlight of the film, her dark, theatrical style infusing the drama with the edgy and hardcore dynamic the band were famed for. The aim of the band was to be the first all-girl rock band to truly rock and the film promises to do the group justice, giving audiences the chance to really rock out with their frocks out. 8 We’ve seen Angelina Jolie pull some mighty punches in Tomb Raider, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Wanted. We know the woman can kick ass. But espionage thriller Salt is set to put her action mettle to the ultimate test. When CIA officer, Evelyn Salt (Jolie), is accused of being a Russian spy by a defector, she is forced to go on the run and utilise every trick in the covert operative book to escape capture. Her efforts to prove her innocence, however, only serve to arouse suspicion as the pursuit to uncover the truth about her identity gathers pace as the tagline asks, ‘Who is Salt?’ anyway? Originally penned for Tom Cruise, after a series of production issues the script was rewritten for Jolie a major shift, which saw the lead character’s name changed from Edwin to Evelyn. Rocking a series of fetching wigs, Jolie is set to shine in this action-stuffed thrill fest, alongside the director of Patriot Games’ Phillip Noyce and a sterling supporting cast, which includes Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor. SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD 8 Charismatic and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Cera) is just an ordinary 22-year-old guy. He’s had his share of girlfriend problems before, but he’s in a good place and is happy hanging out with friends and playing bass guitar for his garage rock band Sex Bob-omb. That is, until the pink-haired girl of his dreams, Romana Flowers (Winstead), skates into his life to throw a spanner in the works. But alas, his newfound sweetheart comes with all sorts of baggage in the shape of seven evil ex-boyfriends, including infamous skateboarders, vegan rock stars and fearsome identical twins, who will do whatever it takes to eliminate Scott Pilgrim as a potential suitor for Romana. Based on the Scott Pilgrim comic book series, the film is directed by the genre-bending Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), who is quickly establishing himself as potentially the most unique, exciting and off-kilter British director of the last 15 years and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World looks set to be every bit as weird and wonderful as every other outing. James Wright

8 In their latest collaboration since the National Treasure franchise, Jerry Bruckheimer and Jon Turteltaub attempt to resurrect the sleeping beauty of Disney’s 1940 Technicolor triumph Fantasia, with the highly anticipated The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Far from a Mickey Mouse affair, the film appears more an extension of the original idea as sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Cage) attempts to defend the city of Manhattan from his nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Molina). Though a master of his craft, Blake cannot succeed alone and so recruits reluctant science geek Dave Stutler (Baruchel) to join him in the ancient battle between good and evil. After a crash course in science and magic, Dave must overcome his fear and scepticism in order to unleash his hidden potential, save the world and ‘get the girl’ in this epic comedy adventure. Forget any expectations of dancing broomsticks. With reports of flaming park fountains, transporting mirrors and blasting plasma battles, prepare for what promises to be another in a long line of Bruckheimer/ Disney adaptation successes. 8 Vincenzo Natali, director of the thoroughly creepy Cube, brings us this creepy study into man’s meddling with science. Academy Award winner Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley star as Clive and Elsa, a pair of young scientists specialising in the splicing of DNA from different animals to create new hybrids. When they secretly take a risk and use human DNA in their experiments, the result is human hybrid Dren (newcomer Delphine Chaneac), an extraordinary creature that exhibits an array of unexpected developments, and may just be the next evolutionary step for mankind. Clive and Elsa soon learn that they shouldn’t play with Mother Nature as Dren exceeds their expectations, and, ultimately, their worst nightmares. This original cautionary tale about science with no boundaries promises to take you to uncomfortable places and abandon you there. A perfect blend of thrills and chills, this thought-provoking and disturbing flick may very well be the best horror film of the summer, and is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat - hands over eyes. 8 This summer sees the return of the ever-popular Step Up films - but this time we’re treated to the dance and drama in eye-popping 3D. Director Jon M. Chu brings in a whole new cast as the Step Up formula spreads its wings across the Atlantic. The students of Maryland School of Arts travel to Paris for an International Dance Competition. However, Moose (Sevani) misses the flight home and is taken in by some of the residents to be initiated into the world of the underground dance scene, which is about to hold its own competition. When a dance routine is stolen, Moose brings some of his friends back to help with the event. The film looks at the far-reaching impact that dance has on the individual, with the message that if you work hard enough for something, you’ll always succeed. Combining mesmerising dance routines, blossoming romances and a promising soundtrack featuring the likes of Trey Songz, Flo Rida, B.O.B, Sean Paul and Estelle, Step Up 3D is shaping up to be the perfect high-energy, feel-good flick. THE ILLUSIONIST

8 Do you believe in magic? Sylvain Chomet is asking the question in his latest animation, The Illusionist. Set in 1950s’ Edinburgh, the film tells the story of an ageing Parisian illusionist who finds that, amidst the advent of rock ‘n’ roll and television, dwindling audiences no longer appreciate his profession. It takes an encounter with a young girl and the innocence of her youth to remind him of the power of his enchantment and artistry. The tale draws striking parallels to Chomet’s 2003 film Belleville Rendez-vous, in which another relatively ‘old fashioned’ art form, music hall, is thrown into the spotlight. The Illusionist has travelled the festival circuit, with initial footage being shown at Cannes (2008) and a premiere at the Berlin Festival (2010), wowing audiences with its charming narrative and distinct style of animation. Chomet uses an accessible medium with the power to portray a narrative shaped by complex socioeconomic factors, fast making this film a classic and leaving audiences spellbound. Beth Dearden

8 What with The A-Team, The Losers and The Expendables all being released, this summer looks set to be one of the best in years for action fans, and now another steps forward: The Tournament. Every seven years, 30 of the world’s deadliest assassins gather together in a pre-selected town and try and kill each other for a cash prize of ten million dollars. All this is watched by a select group of the world’s wealthiest villains who place bets on the outcome. This time round, the action takes place in a small Scottish town and, due to a series of unlikely events, the local priest gets caught in the crossfire and must team up with one of the assassins in a desperate bid to stay alive. Promising to pack enough explosions, shoot ‘em ups and general mayhem to compete with the other big hitters, Scott Mann’s debut feature could be the start of a long and testosterone-fuelled career in movingmaking. TOY STORY 3 (3D) 8 It’s been a long 15 years since the release of the original Toy Story, but Toy Story 3 is finally here. The vibrant characters and hilarious dialogue ensured that the franchise would become engrained in the hearts of all who saw it and rarely has a sequel been so highly anticipated by such a wide audience. Like its predecessors, Toy Story 3 promises to appeal to all ages, providing laughs for the original audience of children who fell in love with the adventurous Woody and Buzz, their parents who laughed just as hard as the kids, as well as a new audience of youngsters ready to be enthralled by the magic. As Andy departs for college, the original gang is cast off to a daycare nursery, where they meet a bunch of new toys, including a tin robot, a rubber Octopus and an evil teddy bear. Mayhem ensues as they plot their escape. With Whoopi Goldberg and Ned Beatty providing their vocal talents alongside the original favourites and Pixar’s animation looking as sharp as ever, Toy Story 3 looks certain to provide stellar family entertainment. Merlin’s Cornwall Cinemas The Savoy Penzance • Merlin Cinemas began in June 1990 with the purchase of the Savoy Cinema Penzance. Over the next four years the cinema received a well deserved face lift and was converted to provide three screens. In addition a successful pizza take-away and delivery shop was installed in 1993 and a stylish licensed bar and restaurant added in 1996. Now 14 years on we have decided the Savoy is in need of another, not so drastic, face lift. As well as a lick of paint and some new signage outside, the bar and restaurant is being refurbished and will be revealed during Summer 2010 along with the launch of a new mouthwatering menu! See page 28 for more details. For bookings and information call 01736 363330

The Royal St Ives

• In late 1990 Merlin acquired the very run down Royal Cinema St Ives. Urgent action was taken and with some hard work was also converted to provide customers with three screens. By 1997 admissions had increased at both sites rising from less than 60,000 to over 130,000 per year. Last year the cinema had some external work carried

out and with the bright blue and red there is no mistaking it is part of the Merlin group. For bookings and information call 01736 796843

The Regal Redruth

The Flora Helston • In 2002 a failing 80 seat single screen cinema was leased from the charitable trust who operated it. In 2004, following the purchase of the building, the Flora was converted to a high quality two screen 80 and a 60 seat cinema. For booking and information call 01326 569977

• The Regal was acquired in July 1998, a logical step in both the expansion and protection of the Merlin empire. The Regal is a cinema and theatre operation and for over a decade has staged live shows for several weeks of the year in the multipurpose 600 seat auditorium. In 2001 the two shops next door to the cinema were purchased to develop an integrated bar and restaurant as well as the introduction of the Screen 7 concept which brought customers our first licensed screen. This Autumn work is scheduled to help the Regal reach it’s full potential. The main auditorium will be converted to house two brand new screens as well as a total refurbishment of the theatre. The existing two screens won’t be left out in the cold and will also receive a much needed refurb. The most exciting news is that the project will see the installation of 3D digital projection! Work is due to be completed by Spring 2011.

The Phoenix Falmouth

• Last year saw our newest and most exciting project to date with the conversion of the old drill hall in Falmouth to our new five screen cinema, The Phoenix. Merlin now had it’s first cinema able to show the latest 3D releases. In addition we continued with the Regal’s Screen 7 concept providing three licensed screens where customers could enjoy alcoholic beverages and hot snacks ordered and enjoyed from the comfort of their luxury cinema seats. The hard work proved to pay off when the Phoenix scooped the UK Independent Cinema of the Year Award from RAMM earlier this year.
