8 Summer’s here and, with the long - and hopefully balmy evenings, comes a sensational string of blockbusters. legendary marvel icon, Captain america, will be sweeping onto cinema screens in Captain america: the first avenger. get set for high-octane action as the star-spangled superhero takes on the nazis. and then there’s the next big screen outing for the robots in disguise in transformers: Dark of the moon, which promises to outshine its predecessors for its darker tone and mesmerising 3D effects. Drama darlings will fall for the
critically acclaimed delights of tragicomedy Beginners, not to mention the highly anticipated big screen adaptation of David mitchell’s bestselling novel, One Day, starring anne hathaway and Jim Sturgess. and fans of the inbetweeners will be chomping at the bit for a movie-sized chunk of the lewd, the crude and riproaringly funny brand of humour. if that’s not enough, the final curtain call is nigh for the harry Potter franchise. as the release of the explosive final instalment draws near, prepare for some lengthy queues outside your local cinema and one hell of a ride. PORT ISAAC’S FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS Falmouth week - thursday 11 august
8 The Fisherman’s Friends are shanty singers from Port Isaac who have delighted visitors and locals there for more than 15 years. The ten-man group blends their voices in an incredibly rousing and joyful set of shanties and Cornish folk songs. Each and every member of this unique group is or has been a fisherman, lifeboat man or coastguard (as well as builders, artisans, hoteliers and shopkeepers) in Port Isaac. Having known each other since childhood, they learnt their powerful brand of Cornish harmony singing at the local Methodist chapel - now the pottery of Fisherman’s Friend Billy Hawkins, where the group get together with a crate of ale and a good deal of bonhomie to rehearse their repertoire. Their performance is sure to be a musical highlight of this year’s Falmouth Week. 8.30pm, tickets £15 standing 10 July - Blackfoot, 15 July - Barry & stuart, 16 July - Jls experience, 29 July - elo experience, 31 July - dr Jazz & Big Band, 3 august - Jethro 2011, 5 august - and Finally phil collins, 7 august - Jimmy tarbuck, 10 august - ralph mctell, 11 august - Fisherman’s Friends, 12 august - hawkwind, 24 august rob kingsley - a vision of elvis, 27 august - Joey the lips

THE BIG PICTURE
Peter Delaunay has been watching the latest films from tomorrow’s filmmakers.
To Penryn, and a back room generously loaned by the Kings Arms Hotel that Simon and Brett Harvey from local production company O-Region had transformed into a pop-up cinema. Abigail Gissey and her colleagues on the second year of the BA (Hons) Digital Media course at University College Falmouth organised have a screening of their latest films. At Truro and Penwith College we are always keen to see the work of our partner institutions in the Combined Universities in Cornwall where our students can complete their Higher Education without having to move out of Cornwall. The six films on offer took as their inspiration a wide range of themes but what particularly impressed was that each film expressed the passions and concerns of their makers in ways that were both entertaining and thought provoking. In the spirit of Ealing Studios: very British sentiments, never sentimentalised. Scrapbook (Producer: George Stone, Director: Nicholas Headlong) explored the problems of personal communication in an original and contemporary style. The characters, faces obscured by individually decorated masks, scribbled in notebooks, their handwritten exchanges superimposed on screen; yet stylisation never obscured the telling of a very real love story. Open Till Late (Prod: Patrick Monger, Dir: Nicholas Barrett) A corner shop run by two friends. Three hours until the apocalypse. But human nature won’t stop for the end of humanity: so will superrealist Johnny and ever-optimistic Steven find a compromise? Wittily observed commentary on Britain today fleshed out the personal drama. In A Word in Edgeways (Prod: Katrina Teobald, Dir: Sean Shannon) local actress Kate Lamerton Wilde gave the performance of the evening as the greedy, grasping wife in a beauty parlour, simpering, vamping and threatening on a mobile phone to her husband in his gym locker-room as she persuaded
him to empty his bank account. This spin on a 21st century urban legend was the belly-laugh movie of the evening. iMatch (Prod: Kirsty Charles, Dir: Caroline Jones) is a Pythonesque fairy-tale of love and music. Richly enhanced with pitch-perfect performances and pitch-perfect sound effects and editing. In under four minutes we saw a seduction, an assault, a rescue and an escape – and all without a word of dialogue. In Make Me Happy (Prod: Nicholas Pearson, Director: Craig Barclay) a red balloon escapes from a bunch held by an urban clown and brings joy to all who encounter it: a harried businessman, a judge and the accused, two neighbours who meet for the first time, a mother and her crying baby. Cinephiles might be alerted by “a red balloon” but if you’re going to steal (or borrow, or pay ‘homage’) do it from the best. And they did. And it made us very happy. Meat (Prod: Abigail Gissey, Dir: Alexander Elms) started with a simple premise: a failing TV chef decides to go out with a shocking series finale – but an ingenious narrative structure, supporting characters drawn with economy and precision, and great cinematic story-telling combined with production values that turned every penny of the budget into a pound on screen made this seven minute short look and feel like a feature. A triumphant evening for filmmakers already mixing with the best of our local industry: the student films had been mentored under the expert eye of the best script editor in the South West, Marie Macneill, who, as you read this, will be deep in editing her latest film The Potter’s Field. The evening ended with a screening of the trailer for O-Region’s up-coming feature film Weekend Retreat – which is a perfect place to wrap this glimpse at the exciting future for filmmaking in Cornwall as writer/director Brett Harvey began his filmmaking career at Truro College.

8 It’s been six years since graphic designer and filmmaker Mike Mills made his feature debut with the quirky indie comedy Thumbsucker. Now he’s back with festival favourite Beginners, featuring some of the most under-appreciated acting talent the film world has to offer. This tragically comic drama stars Ewan McGregor as a young man who falls for a French actress (the fabulous Mélanie Laurent who came to Hollywood’s attention in the Academy Award-nominated Inglourious Basterds). Flashbacks reveal that his elderly father recently passed away, just a few years after coming out of the closet and teaching his son a valuable lesson about living life to the full and loving someone else completely. Oliver (McGregor) has always sabotaged his relationships, as he believes from the beginning that they’ll never work out. But adopting his late father’s dog and a chance encounter with the beautiful Anna (Laurent) allows him to put the lessons in life and love his father imparted on him before his death into practice. Critics have fallen for McGregor and Laurent’s sizzling chemistry and been captivated by Christopher Plummer’s supporting performance - could this finally earn him his much-deserved and long overdue Oscar? 8 The final piece of Marvel’s most ambitious project is finally in place as the first Avenger himself hits the big screen. When runt of the litter Steve Rogers (Evans) fails to join the army during World War II due to his frail body, he’s enlisted into the Super Soldier program under the command of Col. Chester Phillips (Jones). Rogers becomes the perfect candidate and undergoes a serum that changes him from stick insect weakling to the heavily muscled and super strong Captain America. Tasked with taking down the deadly Red Skull (Weaving), leader of a Nazi organisation known as HYDRA, Cap must join forces with best friend Bucky Barnes (Stan) and love interest Peggy Carter (Atwell) in order to put an end to the war. The First Avenger is the final part of Marvel’s Avengers project, which will see some of the world’s greatest superheroes team up in a movie that promises to blow people away. Iron Man, Thor and more will stand side by side with Cap as they bring you one of the best comic book adventures ever, making Captain America: The First Avenger, quite simply, a must see! Ryan Cope

Avenging the summer blockbusters As Captain America: The First Avenger bursts onto the silver screen in his star-spangled suit, Chris Wasey investigates the summer’s most anticipated superhero adventure
>> July > August
I
f you believe popular film mythos, summer ‘blockbusters’ are a happy accident, due in no small part to a temperamental shark named ‘Bruce’. so named by director, spielberg, the mechanical predator (better known by his very catchy theme music) was deemed so fake looking that he was almost edited out entirely. transforming a creature feature into a nerveshredding thriller, audiences flocked to cinemas and Jaws became the first ever movie to exceed $100 million at the box office. Overnight, Hollywood woke up to the fact that well advertised, widely released pictures could make more money than a dozen B movies combined. yes, the risks were bigger, but so too the rewards. Over the decades, the uncertainty of these productions has seen Hollywood become somewhat risk averse, and with the budget for an average blockbuster having ballooned to $120-180 million (plus a cool $100 million for global marketing), you can see why. It is a sad reality, but in ‘these difficult times’, most studios lack much by way of ambition. As such, we are often left with lumbering behemoths, formulaic and lazy, many little more than a bloated exercise in director self
indulgence and Hollyoaks dialogue. yet, there do remain those occasions where a film surpasses its trailer, where one walks out with a buzzing in the stomach and a goofy grin on the face. It is for the latter that we love cinema, and why each summer we excitedly embrace the hyperbolic bombast that comes with it. so rejoice, film lovers, for blockbuster season is upon us once again. From July 4 (yes,
in filmic terms, we follow an American calendar), the biggest releases of 2011 will come thick and fast. the coming months herald both Conan the Barbarian and transformers: Dark of the Moon - epic creations in their own right - but this year both acting as vanguard for an altogether more star-spangled superhero. Bucking Hollywood’s ‘play it safe’ mentality, the release of Captain America: the First Avenger sees Marvel continue with a five year master plan, charging headlong towards the release of its historic blockbuster event next year. the scale of the undertaking is beyond anything the world has ever seen before, four $150 million dollar action movies feeding into a single epicentre production - the Avengers.
FEATURE
While Iron Man 1 and 2, the Incredible Hulk and most recently, thor, all alluded to the franchise’s future with clever crossovers and end credit vignettes, Captain America wears its heart a little more prominently on its sleeve, or more accurately, in its title and Marvel are hoping they have saved the best for last. Where the hammer wielding Norse god was relatively unknown in comic book terms, Captain America has sold in excess of 210 million copies since its inception in the 1940s. A weedy but courageous young man is refused service in the united states military and trials an experimental drug, instantly advancing to the pinnacle of human physical ability. Wielding an impenetrable shield, which he can hurl as a weapon with Olympian accuracy, steve Rogers goes on to lead the American battle against an evil Nazi regime. the film follows this basic origin premise almost to the letter, replacing the 21st century setting of his Marvel allies to World War II America and Europe. Chris Evans’ turn as Johnny ‘the Human torch’ storm in Fantastic Four and a cameo appearance in scott Pilgrim Vs. the World has cemented his reputation as a charismatic and comedic leading man. there is also some added gravitas by way of tommy lee Jones as Col. Chester Phillips, a stern commanding officer charged with overseeing the super soldier project. Hugo Weaving meanwhile takes honours as Captain America’s nemesis, Johan schmidt / the Red skull, head of Hitler’s advanced weapons division and head of international terrorist organisation, HyDRA. In much the same vein as Iron Man, Captain America cleverly aims to find a balance between family-friendly, almost fantasy styled superhero movies like spiderman and the gritty real world conflict one might expect from recent outings of Batman. Ambitious, respectful of its influences and kicking Nazi ass, Bruce would be proud of this one. Captain America: The First Avenger is released on 29 July

8 Disney and Pixar team up once again this summer to bring us the sequel to the 2006 hit Cars. Cars 2 sees star racing car lightning McQueen (Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (larry the Cable guy) take their friendship to new places, as they leave Radiator springs and head overseas to compete in the first ever World grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. the road to the championship, however, is filled with surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. torn between assisting lightning McQueen in the highprofile race and towing the line in a top-secret spy mission, Mater’s journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the world. A host of new characters are introduced to the sequel - including a menacing bunch of European villains, determined to stop lightning McQueen clinching the chequered flag. With amazing 3D effects and an all-star cast, which includes the unmistakable tones of Michael Caine, Cars 2 promises mesmerising adventure and fast-paced fun.

8 Mitch (Reynolds) is something of a prince in the kingdom of bachelordom, spending his evenings entertaining a smorgasbord of young ladies, whilst Dave (Bateman) goes home every night to his beautiful wife, children and home. Despite this, the best friends have cases of ‘life envy’. luckily for them, making drunken wishes to statuette deities whilst relieving yourself into a magic fountain will always have serious consequences. After waking up in each other’s bodies, the pair have the opportunity to lead the lives they always wanted, from family man to ladies man and vice versa. If you enjoy a pinch of the supernatural and wife swapping - and have a deep-rooted jealousy of your best friend then the Change-up may well be for you. Man of the moment Ryan Reynolds (Definitely Maybe, the green lantern) returns to his comedic roots, offering the raunchy charisma which propelled him into the major league. Whilst Bateman (Juno) looks to lend a distinct air of credibility, propelling the frighteningly common anomaly of body swapping into a whole new dimension of hilarity. 8 the most legendary barbarian of all time is back this summer. Having evolved and thrived over the course of eight consecutive decades in the public imagination in prose, graphics and games, on big screen and small - Conan’s exploits in the Hyborian Age now come alive like never before in a colossal 3D action adventure. A quest that begins as a personal vendetta for the fierce Cimmerian warrior soon turns into an epic battle against hulking rivals, horrific monsters and impossible odds, as Conan realises he is the only hope in saving the great nations of Hyboria from an encroaching reign of supernatural evil. Jason Momoa of stargate Atlantis and game of thrones fame is stepping into Arnold schwarzenegger’s iconic shoes as the Cimmerian warrior, and he brings with him the necessary action credentials and hulking presence to make Conan the Barbarian one entertaining thrill ride. Prepare for pirates, warlords, witches, sorcery - and a lot of muscle - in this fantasy adventure. Ian J. Martin

8 Robert Redford has never been one to shy away from hard-hitting subject matter. From his portrayal of investigative journo Bob Woodward in Watergate biopic All the President’s Men to directing antiwar drama lions for lambs, Redford has made a habit of translating some of the united states’ most controversial moments onto the silver screen. He continues this trend with the Conspirator, weaving an intricate and bloodstained tapestry of America’s violent awakenings. Depicting the tumultuous aftermath of Abraham lincoln’s assassination, the picture follows the arrest and trial of those responsible for the President’s murder. Civil War veteran and inexperienced lawyer Frederick Aiken (McAvoy) agrees to defend sole female suspect Mary surratt (Wright). With a wounded nation demanding justice, surratt becomes public enemy number one, her survival hinging solely upon Aiken’s ability to uncover the truth. the controversial outcome of the trial may well be condemned to the coffers of American history but the enthralling story is more than deserving of this accomplished retellling. Derived from the 2006 graphic novel of the same name, Cowboys and Aliens is the very definition of a high concept blockbuster, which sees Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford team up in the Wild West to counter an unexpected alien attack. Jake lonergan (Craig) awakens in the Arizona desert, armed with a strange futuristic device and with no memory of his past. It soon becomes apparent that he is a wanted man, but when the local town suddenly falls prey to alien assailants, Jake becomes their greatest asset. Outlandish as it may seem, Favreau has attempted to craft a film that reflects a semi-plausible 19th century reaction to an alien attack and given that it’s something of a pet project, Cowboys and Aliens promises to be an exciting and characteristically explosive affair. Coloured by Favreau’s childlike penchant for futuristic gadgetry and bolstered by the sheer calibre of talent on hand here, this promises to be one hell of a fun ride.

8 J.K. Rowling may have said that Deathly Hallows: Part 1 was her favourite film to date, but to most audiences it served purely as an exposition for the rollercoaster ride of magic that Part 2 promises to be. For those unfamiliar with the story so far, Voldemort has just gained possession of the Elder Wand, one of three of the titular deathly hallows which will allow him to become ruler of death. unbeknownst to Voldemort, while he’s busied himself with finding those, Harry, Ron and Hermione have destroyed three of the Horcruxes which are keeping his soul intact. there are now four to go, but only three are known to the trio (giving away the fourth one would be far too big a spoiler). It’s not long until Voldemort discovers their mission and becomes ever so slightly annoyed, resulting in the most destructive, emotional, body count-upping (and expensive) battle that Hogwarts has ever seen. this truly guarantees to be the send-off that our bespectacled hero deserves, culminating in not one, but several shock twists. 8 Has your boss ever frustrated, annoyed or belittled you so much that you’ve considered - even for the briefest of moments - that you’d like something bad to happen to them? Well you’re not alone. Meet Nick (Bateman), Kurt (Day) and Dale (sudeikis), who find themselves in the same predicament. Nick endures 12 hour days for his twisted supervisor Harken (spacey), dental assistant Dale is growing increasingly terrified at the X-rated advances of Dr. Harris (Aniston) and Dale uncovers the corrupt plans of his new boss Pellit (Farrell). Quitting is not an option for the three friends. they decide that the only option to make their work life more tolerable is to turn their bosses into dust, so, after too many drinks and dubious advice from an ex-con (Foxx), they devise a plan to get rid of their employers… permanently. But as we all know, even the best laid plans have a habit of going awry. With a starry cast including Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Kevin spacey and Jamie Foxx, Horrible Bosses promises to deliver a hilarious slice of black comedy. Emma Ingham

8 the Inbetweeners’ greatest success (aside from all the BAFtAs, of course) was in its capacity to completely hijack the English language. With every broadcast, a new word, insult or (horrendously colourful) turn of phrase would be added to cultural vernacular. In 2010, the likes of ‘clunge’ and ‘bus w*****’ all became acceptable conversation starters. For those unfamiliar with the show, our four heroes are as follows: Will (posh one), simon (‘normal’ one with ridiculous hair), Jay (borderline sex-pest) and Neil (the simple one). Continuing from where series three left off, the group has now finished sixth form and use their last summer together for a lads’ holiday in Crete. Although barely able to function in normal society, the dysfunctional band comes face to face with penis-shaped sunburn, horny dinner ladies and children in wheelchairs. In filmic terms the Inbetweeners is perfectly placed - taken off our screens before the format became stale (think sex and the City) but with years of toe-curling back-story. long time fans get to play in-joke bingo, while new initiates get a high percentage shot of the decade’s sharpest written comedy. 8 In a time of insecurity, uncertainty and unemployment, larry Crowne (Hanks) brings us the optimistic message that there are always ups after downs and that it’s never too late to learn. Crowne, an amiable ex-big box company clerk, finds himself struggling to fill his redundant days when the hope for self-reinvention takes him to college. Here, he joins a posse of outcasts also trying to further themselves through education. their teacher, the beautiful Mercedes tainot (Roberts), has lost passion for her profession and her love life - like Crowne, she’s found herself stuck in one of life’s ruts. As their two lives converge and their relationship grows, the drama highlights the fact that, however old you are, there is still excitement out there for those who seek it and that a passion lost isn’t a passion lost forever. tom Hanks takes writing, directing and starring role credits in this dramatic comedy, shedding an optimistic light on the anxiety of the middle age standstill and introducing a positive attitude towards growing up and not giving up. 8 It’s been the book to be seen reading - hailed as one of the best of 2010. After sharing their graduation night in 1980s’ Edinburgh, Emma and Dexter’s relationship and the divergent paths their lives have taken are visited on each anniversary of that day. Emma’s a working class girl who dreams of making the world a better place, while charming Dexter’s ambitions are slightly less altruistic. Author/ screenwriter David Nicholls’ study of the chemistry, character development and the ‘what ifs’ between two entwined lives is in the capable hands of lone scherfig, director of 2009’s An Education. the novel’s international acclaim has caused a sizeable buzz for the film’s release. Of course, fans are keen to see the thought-provoking When Harry Met sally-like romantic tale come to life, but since the moment the casting of Anne Hathaway in the role of Emma was revealed, many claimed a polished Hollywood actress would struggle to pull off the shy, self-deprecating English character. Finally, Hathaway’s got her chance to win over both fans of the book and newcomers to this clever angle on the will-they-or-won’t-they? narrative. Cheyenne Hill

8 Pierre Boulle’s 1963 science-fiction-fantasy novel, Planet of the Apes, spawned an iconic series of films, as well as a television and comic book series. the latest film, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, is a prequel that is not based on any of the original films. Instead, it takes elements from the earlier films to create a new and exciting story. set in present day san Francisco, scientist Will Rodman (Franco) works on a cure to reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s using apes as his test subjects, and succeeds in developing a serum to fight the disease. But the story doesn’t end there. Finalising the results on a chimpanzee named Caesar (serkis), Will discovers the serum also boosts brain power. If only Will had tested on rats! Caesar ultimately plots his escape, using the serum on the other apes to launch a simian uprising. If that hasn’t whet your appetite, WEtA Digital, the special effects team behind lord of the Rings and Avatar, has provided the CgI effects to create unbelievably lifelike apes, rather than the costumed actors of previous films. this is a film that simply must be seen on the big screen. 8 After the somewhat disappointing second installment of the transformers movie franchise, director Michael Bay returns with arguably this summer’s flagship blockbuster. so far, the bulk of the film’s plot has remained tightly under wraps with only a few minor details revealed in the film’s astonishing, goose bumps-inducing trailers. What we do know: the space race was a cover up. something extremely valuable is hidden on the moon. More characters from the ‘80s animated series make an appearance. the comical aspects of the previous films (such as sam’s irritating parents) have been ditched in favor of a much darker storyline. A city is decimated in ways that makes recent films such as skyline and Battle: los Angeles look like child’s play. Intriguingly, the film has also received unprecedented rave reviews for its use of 3D, which many critics have described as ‘the best 3D movie experience since James Cameron’s Avatar - if not better’. In what is widely expected to be the last in the series, it’s seems only fitting that transformers: Dark of the Moon looks ten times more action packed, explosive and entertaining than both of the previous films combined.
