FEATURE One of the greatest stories ever told is being told again in a modern-day blockbuster that dials back the CGI to echo the swords-and-sandals epics of days gone by. WORDS LEE CURTIS

BLAST FROM THE PAST RELEASE DATE 26 AUGUST / Director Timur Bekmambetov / Starring Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell, Morgan Freeman / Genre Action, Adventure, Drama

T

he turn of the millennium saw a powerful resurgence of the swords-and-sandals genre with Ridley Scott’s roaring Gladiator leading the charge. We were entertained, but great epics declined, CGI spectacles exploded, and style soon superseded substance. But now, a legend is being resurrected to revitalise an exhausted genre by championing its golden age. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, Ben-Hur is the latest adaptation of Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel,

which has been adapted multiple times, though audiences are most familiar with William Wyler’s 1959 Charlton Heston epic that won an astonishing 11 Oscars. The story is timeless; Judean prince Judah Ben-Hur is betrayed and enslaved by his adopted brother Messala. After escaping captivity, he seeks revenge by challenging his brother to a grand chariot race to the death. The sprawling epic has been stripped down to a more succinct revenge movie still brimming with a multi-layered narrative, compelling characters, and far less green screen than we’ve come to expect. It’s a different sort of epic with the pulling power to draw you into the cinema, and refreshingly visceral action to keep you there.

The 1959 film’s sequence, which took a year to plan, involved 15,000 extras and no computer graphics, is one of the greatest cinematic achievements of all time and remains just as thrilling today. 57 years on and, despite the proliferation of CGI, director Timur Bekmambetov wanted to honour the original by using as many practical effects as possible. Unlike most blockbusters today, Bekmambetov employs technology to enhance traditional production techniques rather than replace them to ensure his white-knuckle set piece perfectly captures the feeling of being behind the reigns of a deadly chariot.

Steven Spielberg is back in the world of fantasy using motion-capture technology to present his take on Roald Dahl’s classic story, The BFG. WORDS AARON KENT RELEASE DATE 22 JULY / Director Steven Spielberg / Starring Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Bill Hader / Genre Adventure, Family, Fantasy

I

n recent years Steven Spielberg has strayed from fantasy films, expanding his repertoire to real-world events (Bridge of Spies, Lincoln). This summer he’s back to his roots with The BFG, and it promises to be a fizzwiggling, bellypopping, snortling good time. Based on Roald Dahl’s book, The BFG is a Big Friendly Giant who distributes good dreams to children. Unlike other giants, he refuses to eat people, and stands at a ‘runty’ 24 feet tall - some 88.5 feet shorter than Ghostbuster’s Stay

3D IN CERTAIN CINEMAS

Puft Marshmallow Man, and over 300 foot shorter than Godzilla. However, BFG makes friends with orphan Sophie, and together they battle bad giants and catch good dreams. The BFG is played by 2016 Oscar nominee Mark Rylance while Sophie is played by Ruby Barnhill, who learned six pages of dialogue from heart for her initial audition. The film also boasts an impressive cast including Bill Hader, Rafe Spall, and Jemaine Clement. In another nod to his early career, Spielberg hired E.T. scribe Melissa Mathison to write the screenplay, though sadly she passed away before its release. John Williams scored the film, ensuring that the whole event will definitely not be a snozzcumber.

THE BFG

OTHER DAHLICIOUS BOOKS JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH An orphan lives inside a magical peach with bugs for friends and attempts to escape from his vindictive aunts.

FANTASTIC MR. FOX Mr. Fox lives with his wife and four children near the farms of Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. After raiding their farm for chickens one too many times, he goes to war with the farmers as they try to starve his family out.

CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY Perhaps Roald Dahl’s most famous book - the story of a young boy who gets a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s factory.

THE TWITS Roald Dahl’s anti-beard novel is about Mr and Mrs Twit whose animals revolt against their nasty ways.

MATILDA A young girl with telekinetic powers exacts revenge on her evil teacher, Miss Trunchbull.

LOST IN SPACE With no ship, no crew, and seemingly no hope of survival, can Captain Kirk once again defy the odds and reunite the U.S.S. Enterprise to fight a deadly new enemy? WORDS BRODY ROSSITER

STAR TREK BEYOND

RELEASE DATE 22 JULY / Director Justin Lin / Starring Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba / Genre Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

F

ollowing on from the cataclysmic events of Star Trek Into Darkness events which included the destruction of downtown San Francisco and the temporary death of Kirk - the crew of the Enterprise decide to reunite with the intention of once again boldly going where no man or woman has gone before. Midway through their exploratory mission into the furthest reaches of space, a violent wave of creatures pour out of the abyss and lay waste to all that rests between the crew and eternal darkness. Suffice to say, it’s not a good day at the office for the battlehardened collective. After narrowly escaping the gravely wounded ship, and surviving the plummet down to an unknown planet thanks to some nick-of-time teleportation, the crewmembers begin to unravel the truth behind the source of the swarm that ravaged their vessel in a matter of moments. A fearsome new force has materialised, unlike any major villain Star Trek’s universe, cinematic and otherwise, has seen before. Idris Elba - widely recognised for his portrayal of DCI John Luther, and his recent breathtaking portrayal of a warlord in Netflix’s Beasts of No Nation - steps into the role of another would-be warlord, namely, the fearless and destructive, Krall. The fiercely intimidating leader heads up a technologically advanced alien race whose true intentions remain unknown. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto

reprise their roles as the reckless but brave Captain James T. Kirk and his stoic but deadly First Officer, Spock. The pair must somehow reunite the displaced crew and forge an offensive against Krall before his appetite for destruction and thirst for supremacy lead him back to Earth. Ever since the decimation of his home planet, Spock has sought to recover a sense of identity and find purpose alongside his human counterparts, a theme which will be fleshed out during Beyond’s bombastic yet emotive narrative. After his shortlived death, Kirk has finally stepped out of the shadow of his father, but will his newfound sense of duty result in the ultimate sacrifice to save his crew? With J.J. Abrams busy rebooting that other epic franchise in a galaxy far, far away - he oversaw Star Trek as a producer this time around - Fast and Furious director, Justin Lin, commandeered directorial duties for the third instalment. Given the director’s keen eye for action and love of white-knuckle set pieces, don’t expect his time aboard the Starship Enterprise to be a quiet ride. Trailers have already highlighted an explosive series of edge of your seat encounters between forces of good, evil and everything in-between. Screenwriters, including Brit star, Simon Pegg, went into the project with the goal of reinstalling a sense of wonder and exploration at the core of the movie that many Trekkies have found lacking due to previous pictures’ tendency to place action-packed endeavours front and centre. An unpredictable new enemy, a mysterious ally and a band of beloved heroes promise to collide and face off in an intergalactic showdown that will set fire to the skies. Will the Enterprise once again overcome the odds, or is this the final frontier for mankind?

ALL CREW ON DECK UHURA The Enterprise’s communication officer is cool under pressure and fluent in Klingon. She is often the ship’s first point of contact, but her romance with Spock may prove deadly.

BONES Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy is the ship’s chief medical officer and the voice of reason between the highly emotional Kirk and highly scientific Spock.

SCOTTY Simon Pegg plays Scotty, the ship’s chief engineer and a sure source of comic relief when the going gets tough.

CHEKOV Pavel Chekov is a young mathematics prodigy whose fluency with numbers often proves instrumental in securing the Enterprise’s safe passage.

SULU A constant anchor for the Enterprise, Sulu has previously acted as captain in Kirk and Spock’s absence. Courageous, unafraid of a fistfight, and a fan favourite.

R

emembering everything doesn’t mean you know everything”. So begins Jason Bourne’s re-emergence from the shadows. More than ten years after the events of Ultimatum, he continues to hide away from the world. With full memory of the Treadstone programme, as well as all the assassinations completed while under its control, Bourne begins to doubt himself. Meanwhile, CIA director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) and his taskforce leader (Alicia Vikander) begin a new hunt. Narrowly surviving,

Bourne is joined by Nicky Parsons (Julia Styles), a former employee of Treadstone, as they attempt to stop a new, more dangerous version of the programme. All of the hallmarks of the original Bourne trilogy are back, bigger than ever. Trained assassins engaged in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Worldwide city hopping. Gritty, handto-hand combat. Breakneck handheld camera work. City-sprawling, highoctane car chase sequences (described by director Paul Greengrass as “by far the biggest we’ve ever undertaken”). Amongst a cinematic landscape of flying men, super-serums, and human bats, audiences can again look to Bourne for a more complex array of human motivations... and the skull-crunching, violent reality that comes with it.

Fifteen years after we first opened her diary, the hilariously awkward, thirty-something singleton is now forty-something and single again following a split from Mark Darcy.
