8 here comes the sun - and with it comes a feast of blockbuster films to satiate appetites for high-octane action, epic fantasy and sun-drenched romance not to mention the final curtain call for a certain boy wizard. yes, it’s almost time to bid farewell to the harry potter saga as harry potter and the Deathly hallows: part 2 casts its enchantment spell on cinema screens across the globe in July. see our tribute to the wizarding phenomenon on p.10. as wedding season kicks off, we have plenty of matrimonial-
themed drama to warm cockles and tickle funny bones, from something Borrowed and Jumping the Broom to the Judd apatow-produced Bridesmaids. then, of course, there’s the hugely anticipated sequel to 2009’s the hangover - this time the pre-wedding shenanigans hit Bangkok, and the lunacy is set to hit new heights. whether it’s heralding the return of captain Jack sparrow or bidding farewell to harry potter, get set for a truly memorable season in cinema. rebecca

MINI-MALISM
8 As part of their regular 5-star comedy nights, Princess Pavilion serves up a feast of comic talent starring no less than three top talents. Acclaimed observational comic Junior Simpson, who’s appeared in the likes of The Harry Enfield Show and Love Actually, peppers his set with anecdotes of his world travels with a daring and deliciously mischievous edge. Award-winning comedian and writer Alan Francis is co-writer on Alistair McGowan’s Big Impression - a master of acutely observed character monologues, combining the sinister and surreal with brilliant sardonic wit. Rounding up the talent, highly energetic comedienne Janice Phayre has a dynamic stand-up style, serving up a torrent of silly gags in a show awash with plenty of cheeky filth. Prepare for one hilarious night of entertainment. 8.30pm, £10 age 14+

8 If you love the buzz of watching live drama, don’t miss Mini-malism a new theatre experience from Hall for Cornwall. Completely unlike any traditional perceptions of ‘theatre’, the actors will be gracing the seats of a Mini, along with two audience members who will be immersed in the action. There are four plays to choose from, with the Minis visiting various locations around Cornwall. The inspiration comes from something known as Theatre Of The Absurd which became popular in the 1950s and led to playwrights questioning religion with surreal concepts and absurd drama. The project began with a series of workshops for budding local writers exploring this ‘absurd’ genre. Led by professional writers and actors, the sessions inspired the writing of some original plays four of which were chosen to be performed in the Minis: Thinks by Sally Turner: A couple meet to think, to talk and to think some more. location: king harry Ferry on the river Fal Nice Day by Alan Robinson: Is Mick and Wanda’s day out a nice one for a wedding or a final split? location: perranporth airfield The Land Of Cloaks by Jane Spurr: Fantasy and fairytale meets the modern day. location: colliford lake Breathe With Me by Luke Jeffery: A compulsive tea drinker and her narcissistic Events, promotions companion find solace in old conversations and news from across Cornwall and routines. location: st michael’s mount £50 per performance (for two people)

The Big Picture Chris Wasey, Lecturer in Media at Truro College, responds to those who ask, “Media? Who Cares About Media?” If you believe the mainstream press, one would be forgiven in thinking of Film and Media courses as a somewhat curious educational choice. No guaranteed job, no measurable skills, just an excuse to spend five hours a week watching movies with silly foreign titles. The current tabloid mantra is very clear, young people should be pursuing a career in, well, just about anything else. “But who really cares about ‘media’?” goes the absurd question. Look at what you hold in your hand, not just a free magazine to fritter away twenty minutes before the Pearl & Dean music, but a product of the media – consumed like so many others, without you even realising it. In fact, I would bet that almost every step leading to your arrival tonight was impacted by the media in some way. Go back thirty minutes, how did you get here? For most of you, it will have been a car. Two tonnes of plastic, steel and wires – nothing to do with the media, right? Wrong. During the drive, did you listen to the radio, or play downloaded music from your iPod? In fact, let us consider what once prompted your purchase of that shiny vehicle. Was it a television ad? Do you recall the voyeuristic close ups of tyres on tarmac, the perfect lens flare of a golden sun rising in the distance? Yup, that’s media at work. As to this evening’s cinematic event, what convinced you to part with your hard earned cash; a well edited trailer, five star reviews
or the promise of amazing 3D effects? Start times, rooted out in a local paper, Googled on your laptop or bookmarked with a smartphone – all media devilry. On that same mobile device, from right here in your seat, the media lets you set your Sky+ box to record Eastenders, then share your thoughts with 500 friends via a quick Facebook status. “In cinema, Orange ad made me ROFL”. In case you haven’t guessed, this discussion aims to prompt one simple notion – ‘the media’ is fully integrated within every single aspect in your life: each consumerist purchase, each televisual delight, each electronic interaction – every one a part of the media machine. So how does a Media course tally towards the future? For a dedicated few, the first stepping stones towards a £60k+ career in the field. For most, a chance to break the code, understand secrets within the most diverse and culturally influential industry on the planet. For all involved, an entertaining two years loaded with employment packaged ‘soft skills’. No, Media or Film Studies may not demand our 16-19 generation machine gun through long multiplication like a steroid powered love child of Carol Vorderman and the cast of Skins. It does demand an enquiring mind, articulate analysis and a willingness to apply academically what they’ve spent the last dozen years learning by accident, from the comfort of a sofa.

ATTACK THE BLOCK
FiLm info FiLm credits

8 Directed by showbiz regular but first time director Joe Cornish, Attack The Block looks set to be the latest in the current wave of films from British directors making a big impression both at home and overseas. The film sees an invasion of bloodthirsty aliens hellbent on destroying anything and everyone in their path. The aliens, however, have clearly not done their homework. Choosing to kickstart their invasion by landing in a South London estate, they are faced with stiff resistance from a gang of streetwise kids who - tooled up with bats, blades, fireworks and mopeds take the fight to the aliens the only way they know how. By striking a balance between distinctly British urban grit and the overstated exhibition of Hollywood monster movies, Joe Cornish has created a humour-packed film that transcends the overbearing limits and expectations placed upon often formulaic British cinema. Billed as ‘inner city vs. outer space’, Attack The Block offers a story and spectacle often unrealised by British directors. Forget the inner city London you know, and prepare to see it turned on its head, as Joe Cornish destroys your preconceptions faster than any Hollywood aliens could. Laurence Eastment

BAD TEACHER

8 Think Cameron Diaz can’t do comedy? Then think again, because Bad Teacher gives her another (successful) shot in the humour stakes akin to her early performance in There’s Something About Mary. The film has more in common with Bad Santa than just the title, firing out a series of hilariously rude and crude laughs. Bad Teacher focuses on Elizabeth (Diaz) a foulmouthed schoolteacher who, after being dumped by her partner, tries to woo a new colleague (Timberlake). However, this move doesn’t go down too well with Amy (Punch), a more popular teacher. This initially looks like another Judd Apatow movie, treading the same comedic ground that has been done countless times before. Rest assured, however, that Bad Teacher gives Diaz the perfect platform to show off her underused comic talent, bouncing off a supreme supporting cast including Forgetting Sarah Marshall’s Jason Segel. Imagine a cross between Bad Santa, Glee and I Love You, Man and you’ve just about got Bad Teacher. It may just be the funniest film of the year. Matt Brigden

Harry Potter And The Journey’s End
The hour is nigh. The boy wizard is about to make his final curtain call. As the world awaits the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 with mixed emotions, Cheyenne Hill pays tribute to the wizarding phenomenon that was
T
en years have passed since ecstatic fans first caught a glimpse of their literary hero when baby Harry Potter was placed on the Dursleys’ doorstep at number Four, Privet Drive. The first six films have grossed $5.4 billion worldwide, and those fans have watched Daniel Radcliffe, emma Watson and Rupert Grint grow up alongside Harry, Hermione and Ron; the real-life trio successfully handling the pressures of fame and vast fortunes while the fictional trio
battle the most powerful dark wizard in history. In november 2010, the first part of the final instalment in Harry’s world took audiences on the run far from the safe haven of Hogwarts, with the tenacity of the threesome’s friendship and their loyalties put to the ultimate test. after journeying for years beside these characters, moviegoers found themselves at Part 1’s cliff-hanger forced to mentally prepare for what was to come: not just Harry’s inevitable death match with Voldemort, but the inescapable end of a decade-long worldwide phenomenon.
Waiting for a new Harry Potter film became a cultural event and something of an endurance test for hardcore fans. Finally, as the cinema lights grew dim, the audience waited breathlessly as each movie’s familiar Warner Brother’s logo plunged them into a stomach-churning moment of truth: would this film fulfil their expectations? Would it follow the plot of the book, and give ample screen time to their favourite characters? Would the filmmakers’ changes retain the book’s driving emotions? and perhaps beside them sat friends who hadn’t read the series but were just as
anxious to continue winding up the threads laid throughout the storyline, scattered like hidden gems to be examined at the franchise’s end. From now until 15th July, fans are in the throes of an agonising crisis: both reveling in the momentum of this bittersweet curtain call, and fearing the end of the excitement, the conclusion of the international community that has sprung up to embrace Rowling’s imagined world for one final, celebratory Potter extravaganza. Fans matured alongside Hogwarts’ students, growing progressively wiser in the ways of

the magical world, with each movie diving deeper into the mystery of Harry’s connection to Voldemort. In the beginning, the stakes didn’t seem quite so high; a sense of wide-eyed wonder as fans watched with Harry the boundaries stretching out before them. While director Chris Columbus brought an innocent, child-like charm to the first two films, alfonso Cuarón heightened the drama in Prisoner of azkaban. a wider picture began to unfold as Harry saw more than just shards of his broken family’s past; here he met his parents’ two best friends, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, and in them drew closer to the father and mother he never knew. Goblet of Fire director mike newell focused on the action of the Tri-Wizard tournament and the long awaited reincarnation of Voldemort. David yates took the helm of the four remaining Potter films where Harry’s tribulations and heartbreak built to a crescendo
with the loss of godfather Sirius in Order of the Phoenix, and the entire wizarding world’s loss of the great albus Dumbledore in the Half-Blood Prince. Deathly Hallows: Part 1 was a tremendous departure from the previous films’ structure. no Hogwarts express journey from Platform 9 3/4, no banquet in the Great Hall, no return to the Dursleys’ at the year’s end - none of the familiar landmarks which housed each film’s individual mysteries like reliable, snug bookends. Viewers, like the
trio, were wrenched from their comfort zone and plunged into the wilderness - to great effect. While earlier series entries had brief hints of cinematographic beauty (i.e. Harry’s flight with Buckbeak over the lake in Prisoner of azkaban), Part 1 gifted us with scene after scene of Britain’s glorious landscapes, supporting the franchise’s reception of the 2011 BaFTa award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema. any worries of disjointed narrative or pacing issues from splitting the final book into two films are undoubtedly cast aside. at the film’s close, Voldemort has unearthed the elder Wand, one of three instruments of immortality, which all along had rested in Dumbledore’s grasp. as the Dark Lord retrieves the wand from the cold fingers of the former headmaster, it’s clear that Part 2 will be propelled by Harry’s feverish quest for the

few remaining Horcruxes before Voldemort becomes unstoppable, hinting at what’s been hailed a heart-racing action film. Children and adults alike found hope, encouragement and exhilaration in what started out as family friendly fare and evolved into dramatic fantasy that doesn’t tiptoe around its themes of loss and death. Harry and his friends have something worth fighting for - the one thing that eludes Voldemort. It is this simple yet persistent message that cinemagoers are sure to cling to as they wave farewell to the wizarding world, content in the knowledge that it can be revisited if ever they need reminding. as Sirius once said to Harry, “The ones that love us never really leave us”. While we may never see these characters on the big screen again, it’s certain we won’t let them go. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is released on 15th July

WHAT’S ON
BLITZ 8 Jason Statham is a guilty pleasure. Go on, you can admit it: you’ve seen The Transporter, probably Crank and maybe even The expendables. We’ll bet you even enjoyed them, you dirty little cinephile. It’s ok, there’s no need to hide it anymore. There are millions of us all over the globe, proudly jutting out our chests and wearing steel toecap boots to practice karate. a surprising British export, he is the last bastion of high-octane action and chilling one-liners. With our cockney hard man, you know exactly what to expect. In Blitz, this fine tradition of balls-to-the-wall action continues. The premise is simple: there’s a serial killer in London who only targets cops. as a bobby, this irks our shiny-scalped hero, so he sets about pummelling everyone in sight until the perpetrator is brought to justice. admittedly, mr Statham isn’t much of a thesp in the classic sense (five-time winner of the ‘ewan mcGregor Cup for Dodgy american accents’), but he does many other things spectacularly well. Things like violence: unthinking, skull-crushing violence - and we will always love him for it. Chris Wasey

8 Bridesmaids hits our screens this spring and, from uber producer Judd apatow who’s brought us comical delights from Knocked up and Superbad to The 40-yearOld Virgin, we know we are in for plenty of laughs. Described as the chick flick version of The Hangover, Bridesmaids sees the friendship of Lillian (Rudolph) and annie (Wiig) put to the test when annie is asked to be the maid of honour at Lillian’s wedding. Despite the situation magnifying her gnawing sense of loneliness and serious lack of cash, annie accepts and is delighted to have the role – that is, until she finds out about all the things a maid of honour has to do… We see two friends of the bride battling it out to plan the wedding party of her dreams, each with their own very different ideas and clashing every step of the way. With only one chance to get it perfect, and all hell breaking lose as they travel to Vegas for a hen party none of them will forget, Bridesmaids is set to be a laugh out loud, oestrogen-packed ride to the altar, which explores how far you will go for someone you love. 8 Based on the book of the same name, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules is the sequel to last year’s successful coming-of-age comedy, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Greg Heffley (Gordon) and his brother Rodrick (Bostick) do not get along. In fact, tensions between the two have reached an all time high, prompting their mother (Harris) to call a family meeting where she announces that by getting along with each other, the two can earn ‘Mum Bucks’, which can be exchanged for real money. While their parents are away, Rodrick throws a party that spirals out of control and the boys have to work as a team to clean up. When their mother finds out, however, they are both grounded and Rodrick is forbidden from competing in the local talent show with his band. With his brother’s position in the band in jeopardy, Greg must face up to his responsibility, and learns that having an older brother isn’t as bad as he thought. 8 Don’t get me wrong - I love every single Batman and Superman film. But the time has come to see another superhero from DC Comics on our cinema screens, and Green Lantern is an obvious candidate. The Green Lanterns belong to an intergalactic police force called the Green Lantern Corps. each member possesses a ring with great powers - and the latest recruit has to yield these powers when a new enemy called Parallax endangers the band of warriors and the earth itself. Cocky pilot Hal Jordan (Reynolds) is the first human to become a Green Lantern, which is unfortunate as the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the powers of the ring before. But, with help from fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart, Carol Ferris (Lively), it is up to Jordan to master his powers and defeat the Parallax. Directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale), Green Lantern will no doubt give the Marvel Comics films a run for their money. all we need now is for the Justice League, The Flash and Wonder Woman films to go into production. 8 In 2009, four guys took us on a night out that we will never forget. The Hangover played host to some of the most unimaginable stag do antics the world has ever seen and, despite their individual quirks, we all got to bond with the four friends. This may, the wolf pack is back! In the highly anticipated sequel, Phil (Cooper), Stu (Helms), alan (Galifianakis) and Doug (Bartha) travel to Bangkok for Stu’s wedding. How will they trump the first film, you ask? after the outrageous antics in Vegas, Stu opts for the ‘safe’ option of a low-key prewedding brunch with his pals. However, on finding themselves in exotic and unfamiliar territory, the likelihood of it being a mild affair is a confident zero and Stu is sure to get far more than he bargained for in the crazy climes of Bangkok. Ken Jeong (the loopy and often naked mr Chow) and mike Tyson will reprise their roles, alongside the new addition of Liam neeson, currently only known as ‘Tattoo man’. 8 Sam Gold (eisenberg) is a young Hasid from an Orthodox community in Brooklyn. Studying to be a Rabbi and awaiting details of his arranged marriage, Sam is living the life his family has chosen for him. When his neighbour (Bartha) senses his opposition to their plans, he persuades him to transport ‘medicine’ for an Israeli dealer (abeckaser). His business skills catch the eye of his new boss who decides to take him under his wing and mentor him, resulting in a downward spiral that sees Sam’s double life tear his traditional family life apart and raises suspicions amongst the community. after playing dorky losers in the likes of The Squid and the Whale, adventureland and The education of Charlie Banks, eisenberg carved a niche for himself as the new Michael Cera. Following his Oscar-nominated performance in The Social network, he has proven he is now leading man material and Holy Rollers is just the kind of film he needs to shake off the geek label.

8 One of the unofficial members of the splat pack, James Wan - best known for writing and directing the Saw films and games - hits fans with this new twist in the scare department. Insidious promises a fresh new angle on the influx of haunted house and possession films such as Paranormal activity and The Last exorcism. Stuck in a realm called ‘The Further’ a child believed to be in a coma is, in reality, being haunted by dark spirits. Desperately seeking answers, the Lambert household goes to elaborate measures to ensure the safety of their child. But the evil spirits have other plans and don’t give up their quarry easily. Insidious bears the hallmarks of the earlier haunting films of the 1970s, drawing viewers into an incredibly tense, eerie atmosphere, while early reports from viewers Stateside indicate that the horror scores high on the scare scale. So, if you want to be scared stiff - or are a curious parent with suspicions about your child’s strange behaviour - check out Insidious. Darren L. Maciag

JUMPING THE BROOM 8 Jumping the Broom - a little known phrase for getting married - tells the story of two african-american families of notably different backgrounds coming together for a wedding. The team behind this romantic comedy brings a good variety of skills to the fold. Director Salim akil co-produced the film Drylongso, which featured at the Sundance Film Festival, and also worked on television series such as Girlfriends. Leading cast members Laz alonso and Paula Patton complements akil’s skills: alonso featured as Tsu’tey in avatar while Patton is best known for her role in Precious. When Jason (alonso) meets Sabrina (Patton), they fall in love. unfortunately for Jason and Sabrina, their families are not as instantly compatible as they are and difficulties soon ensue. Friction between the two groups intensifies as the wedding draws near and the couple must struggle against their dislike for each other’s families. Jumping the Broom promises to be full of family drama, humour and charm - definitely worth a trip to the flicks. Kit Goodliffe

MOTHER’S DAY

8 Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saws 2, 3 and 4), Mother’s Day is loosely based on Charles Kaufman’s 1980 horror film of the same name. The drama follows three brothers making their way to their childhood home after a bank robbery doesn’t go according to plan. On their return, they discover their mother has lost the house (in a repossession for a topical twist) and the boys decide to take it back. unfortunately for the new owners - who are in the midst of throwing a rather poorly timed birthday party - the sadistic brothers set about terrorising them and their guests under the watchful eye of their brutal mother. The tone of the story is dark, gritty and terrifying psychologically, turning the popular image of the mother figure - and its associations with nurturing, comfort and security - on its head. With the production team from the Saw movies, you can expect a similar tone of revenge, pay back and plenty of gore. Intense, gripping and at times shockingly violent, mama’s boys are about to make their mother very proud once again. Amy Evans

8 With no Gore Verbinski directing and no actual filming in the Caribbean, this entry in the franchise will be sailing uncharted waters away from the formula that has raked in over $2 billion. While that amount certainly deserves respect, Pirates fans may be looking forward to a fresh start with rum-drenched Captain Jack Sparrow, given the somewhat complicated plotline woven through the second and third films. This time Rob Marshall directs and, while storyline staples Will Turner and elizabeth Swann are absent as Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley pursue other roles, new characters are ready to set sail. Ian McShane and Penélope Cruz play fearsome legend Blackbeard and his mysterious daughter angelica – a love interest for Jack resurfacing from his past. The first trilogy ended with Jack pilfering a map to the Fountain of youth underneath Barbossa’s nose, but Blackbeard and angelica are seeking it as well. Though this new instalment may plot a different course for the series, it’s certain the theme of betrayal will return, as well as swordfights, exotic locales, and definitely don’t forget the rum. PRIEST (3D) 8 Based on the Tokyo Pop graphic novel by min-Woo Hyung comes the latest film from director Scott Stewart, who helmed last year’s Legion. Priest, a western-fused post-apocalyptic thriller, is set in an alternate world - one ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires. The story revolves around a legendary warrior priest (Bettany) from the last vampire war who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece (Collins) is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on an obsessive quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece’s boyfriend (Gigandet), a triggerfingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former warrior priestess (Q) who possesses otherworldly fighting skills. unlike the romantic vampires depicted in the Twilight series or the caped Dracula, these vampires are feral and vicious creatures. With a terrific cast and opening in both 2D and 3D, Priest is set to be a summer blockbuster you won’t want to miss. Ian J. Martin

8 Do you remember prom and how important it was? How it was the one defining moment you worked towards throughout your secondary school life? Where you reinvented yourself one last time and showed everyone who you really were? no? That’s right we don’t make a big deal about it over here. Prom tells the story of several couples as they approach the ‘big night’ that will change their lives forever. each couple deals with it in very different ways in this intersecting story exploring the secrets, insecurities, anticipation and drama surrounding the lives of high school youngsters. nova Prescott (Teegarden) wants to have the best experience ever, but finds that Jesse Richter (mcDonell) might just ruin it for her. mei (Chang) and Justin (Kusnitz) seem like the perfect couple, but both harbour dark secrets that might ruin not only their night - but their relationship. Distributed by Disney, Prom doesn’t appear to be one of those typical High School musical films, but rather an insight into young love, the struggles of relationships and finding your place in the status quo. 8 The wedding season is upon us, and you know what that means - wedding movies! another year, another wedding chick flick, another Kate Hudson vehicle. Fortunately, I’m a sucker for her kooky charm I may have even shed a tear or two at the end of Bride Wars - but sshhh, don’t tell anyone! Here, the blonde beauty plays Darcy, a young woman approaching the big day whose long time gal pal (Goodwin) secretly harbours romantic pangs for her fiancé (egglesfield). Sure, it all sounds a bit My Best Friend’s Wedding-ish but Ginnifer Goodwin has put in many a scene-stealing performance - who could forget her supporting roles in Mona Lisa Smile, Walk the Line and He’s Just not That Into you? I have high hopes that she can do it again, especially with the dashing John Krasinski (away We Go, It’s Complicated) by her side. With Jennie Snyder (The Gilmore Girls, 90210) on scripting duties, Something Borrowed has all the ingredients of a perfect girly summer movie. Emma Farley

8 materialism hit a peak in the 1980s, when Wall Street rose unfathomably high and increased the worth of what people had in their pockets. Set in 1988, Spiderman 3 and Predators’ Topher Grace plays matt Franklin, a promising young university graduate who’s sickened by the greed of those around him and walks out of his well paid job in a lab to take up a position as a video store clerk, much to his father’s annoyance. as well as that, matt’s best friend Barry (Fogler) has just been fired from his job, his sister is getting married to someone who nobody is exactly fond of and Tori Frederking (Palmer) is back on the scene someone who has long been a figure of matt’s lustful desire. Take me Home Tonight centres on one crazy evening where all these events come to a head and, suffice to say, it’s not an easy ride. This doesn’t initially sound like the basis for a great comedy, but helmed by the director of It’s all Gone Pete Tong and starring laughter expert anna Faris, you won’t have to worry about it not being funny. 8 Veterinary student Jacob (Pattinson) gives up on the final stages of his studies when his parents are killed in a car accident and runs off to join a travelling circus. against the magical backdrop of the Big Top, Jacob falls for the star performer marlena (Witherspoon) - who just happens to be the wife of circus owner august (Waltz). Based on the bestselling novel by Sara Gruen and directed by Francis Lawrence, Water For elephants is a dramatic piece that could play a pivotal role in Pattinson’s career, further cementing his status as one of Hollywood’s hottest leading men. as in the Twilight saga and the heartbreaking Remember me, this film is sure to show off that infamous smoulder we all know him for whilst seeing him tackle greater dramatic depths. While you might think Witherspoon and Pattinson make an unlikely couple, prepare to see the chemistry sizzle on screen in this evocative tale of forbidden love. Witherspoon was even reported to have remarked what a good kisser her leading man was in a recent interview! Prepare for romantic drama on an utterly compelling level. Amy Evans

8 Mike Flaherty (Giamatti) is a disillusioned, disheartened and altogether down-on-his-luck attorney. Juggling a failing business and a strained family life, Mike’s only escape from the daily grind is moonlighting as a high school wrestling coach, but recently his team has developed somewhat of a losing streak. Hoping to save his law practice, Mike makes some questionable business decisions, leaving him the guardian of troubled teen Kyle (Shaffer). Luckily for Mike and the team, Kyle is an amateur wrestling prodigy who could be the answer to everyone’s problems but - just as things are looking up - Kyle’s fresh-out-of-rehab mother shows up, threatening to ruin everything. Win Win’s cast of unlikely characters promises to serve up an unflinching and heartfelt exploration of the relationships between ordinary people and what happens when they achieve the extraordinary. Indie picture maestro Paul Giamatti (Sideways, The Illusionist) orchestrates the laughs with his usual charming awkwardness while director Tom McCarthy’s affection for dramatic, character-driven filmmaking looks set to crown Win Win as one of this year’s most loveable releases. So whatever your cinematic preferences, take a chance on Win Win - you really can’t lose. Brody Rossiter

Like many of their kind, they are unaware that anyone else like them exists. When they meet, they form a strong bond of friendship and set off on a quest to form a school where others like them can learn to control their abilities. However, they catch the gaze of fellow mutant Sebastian Shaw (Bacon), leader of the shady Hellfire Club.
