8 From the writing duo of The Hangover comes a laugh out loud comedy about the joys of turning 21. Straight-A college student Jeff Chang (Justin Chon) has always done what’s expected of him. But when his two best friends Casey (Skylar Astin of Pitch Perfect, Wreck-It Ralph) and Miller (Miles Teller of The Spectacular Now, Project X, Rabbit Hole) surprise him with a visit for his 21st birthday, he decides to do what’s unexpected for a change, even though his critical medical school interview is early the next morning. What was supposed to be one beer becomes one night of chaos, over indulgence and utter debauchery in this outrageous comedy. Stopping short of the sociopathic mayhem of last year’s Project X and the harshness of The Hangover Part 2, 21 and Over couches its antics in the genuine friendships between the three boys. This tale of youth and debauchery is the directorial debut of Jon Lucas and Scott Moore and sees them in familiar territory. If The Hangover is anything to go by, 21 and Over is sure to please. 8 In M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth, father and son team Will and Jaden Smith star as two lone survivors of a crash landing on a strange planet. What makes the planet so strange is that it is Earth, 1000 years after humanity was forced to leave due to a cataclysmic event. Since then, everything on Earth - the nature and wildlife both - has evolved to make life for humans impossible. Cypher and Kitai, played by Will and Jaden respectively, are forced to learn to work and survive together in order to stay alive on this unforgiving planet. To make matters worse, Cypher is badly injured from the crash and the two also have to deal with a relentless, dangerous alien creature that escaped from their shuttle. This sci-fi thriller is packed with intense action that will be sure to keep you on the edge of your seat, while offering a unique and stirring insight into what a world reclaimed by nature - and rid of all trace of humanity - may be like. With M. Night Shyamalan at the helm, be sure to expect a few twists and turns along the way. ian J. martin

god amongst mortals; the last son of a dying planet; a boy from Smallville; a man from Metropolis; humanity’s saviour in times of its greatest crisis - Superman has held many monikers throughout his existence, but one accolade always remains: he is, and will always be, the most iconic and beloved hero of modern mythology. His various incarnations and epic actions have not only shaped a fictional multiverse of ink and film, but also our very own realities. His life, relationships with friends and foes alike, earth-shattering death and joyous resurrection have held millions around the globe in suspense - personifying the Kryptonian throughout decades of our anticipation, heartbreak and celebration. For over half a century, the creative forces and storytellers behind Superman have managed to repeatedly suspend our disbelief throughout astonishing displays of strength and an uncanny ability to overcome the most insurmountable of odds yet somehow instil a very real sense of humanity within the hero born Kal-El. This trend of casting superheroes in a much more realistic light is seemingly more evident than ever, especially when it comes to theatrical depictions. Last year, The Dark Knight Rises gave cinemagoers their most human depiction of Batman yet, forcing us all to face the physical and emotional frailties of the man behind the cowl. It would seem that this portrayal of mortality amongst the immortal present throughout Christopher Nolan’s trilogy looks set to bleed into the Man of Steel films, as the producer teams with Zack Snyder, a director who himself has a history of shaping superhero movies that thrive on real life issues and anxieties. His divisive 2009 adaptation of Alan Moore’s cult graphic novel, Watchmen, saw heroes stripped of their divine status of beacons of hope and standard-bearers of
morality, amidst the backdrop of a post-Vietnam war America staring down the barrel of nuclear conflict. In the same vein as The Dark Knight Trilogy and Watchmen, Snyder’s attempt to inject a deeper sense of reality has extended to the smallest of details: the decision to exclude Superman’s infamous and overused Achilles heel, Kryptonite, coming at an early stage. The director has cited an intention to reveal new weaknesses and flaws, moving beyond the immediate physical danger highlighted in previous Superman films and beneath the surface towards rawer, more emotional territory. As a plot device, ‘grounding’ superheroes carries more relevance than ever, as the contrast between heroes, villains and ourselves seemingly grows ever closer. At the time of Superman’s conception in 1933, the 21st century would have appeared to be an age of make-believe, where the world is no longer connected by letters and telephone wire but gadgetladen households and high speed travel. We reached the moon before The Justice League
of America made it their home, engineered scientific marvels and witnessed the tragedies of “men who just want to watch the world burn” first hand. Ultimately today’s superheroes and villains are nuanced and relatable reflections of our modern selves, our hopes and fears, failures and achievements and the difficult choices we make in facing the evolving threats of reality - threats being something Man of Steel will have no shortage of. Originally played by veteran English actor Terence Stamp, Man of Steel’s Big Bad General Zod first graced our mere mortal cinema screens with his presence in Superman: The Movie (1978) and Superman II (1980); now a far more menacing entity has emerged (though the questionable choice of facial hair remains). Portrayed by Michael Shannon, an actor whose rich history of depicting the mentally unstable surely stood him in good stead for playing the megalomaniacal general, he is a Kryptonian who’s only weakness is that of his impenetrable ego. Though Zod’s true intentions are unknown, viral trailers suggest that his arrival
FEATURE
will prove cataclysmic for not only Metropolis, but also Kal-El himself, his destructive reach extending beyond the battlefield and into the origins of Superman’s life upon Earth. Snyder has already assembled an interstellar cast to star alongside leading man Henry Cavill. Russell Crowe takes the role of Superman’s biological father and Krypton’s leading scientist, Jor-El, while the recently resurgent Kevin Costner and Diane Lane guide a shipwrecked Kal-El through earthbound adolescence and the revelations of his true power as Jonathan and Martha Kent. Finally, it wouldn’t be a Superman flick without an appearance from longstanding love interest Lois Lane, a role multi-Oscar nominated actress Amy Adams looks to lend newfound credibility to, while a typically rousing score from Hans Zimmer soundtracks the action. Cities will topple, the skies will part and fire will rain down from the stars, but, from the ashes of destruction, a hero will once again arise. The only question is, are we ready for him? 8 Three words describe the state of Scandinavian cinema today, gritty, uncompromising, and original. Easy Money is the latest in a long line of highly accomplished crime thrillers to drag itself out of the depraved depths of Europe’s criminal underbelly. Presented by cinematic crime lord Martin Scorsese and directed by Daniel Espinosa, the filmmaker responsible for Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington’s frenetic conspiracy picture, Safe House, Easy Money is an equally impactful ride. Starring the future Robocop, Joel Kinnaman, as Johan “JW” Westlund, this adaptation of Jens Lapidus’ bestselling novel follows “JW” as he supplements a double life between the debauched city streets and Stockholm’s upper-class grandeur by selling cocaine. Unsurprisingly becoming a gun-toting drug dealer presents some pitfalls, including a new friendship group of Sweden’s most ruthless individuals. Framing its parallel storylines with stunning cinematography, Easy Money’s haunting depiction of criminality’s seductive lure reveals that where beauty is prized and excess is honoured, loyalties are bought, and as JW will discover, sold just as quickly. Lovers of Headhunters, The Millennium Trilogy, and The Killing, rest assured Easy Money is your next big fix. Brody Rossiter

8 If you’re looking for a healthy dose of fantasy escapism this spring then you’re in for a treat. Director Chris Wedge, known for his excellent work on the animated titans Ice Age and Robots, has turned his talents to the boldly titled Epic, a film based on the work of author William Joyce: The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs. Despite the written inspiration behind it, Epic aims to take the audience on a grander adventure than its page-bound origins and while it uses the characters from Joyce’s children’s book, significant changes have been made to the narrative. The story follows Mary Katherine, a young girl living with her father in the woods. When she is transported into a magical, miniature world within the forest she meets warriors who guard the forest and fight against evil - the Leaf Men. Mary is soon wrapped up in helping these guardians in their struggle as she pursues her own goal of finding a way home. Epic features a noteworthy cast including Colin Farrell and Beyoncé Knowles. For those seeking a family friendly fantasy adventure this May Epic could be an ideal reason to take a trip to the cinema. Kit Goodliffe

THE EYE OF THE STORM 8 The Eye Of The Storm is an Australian drama directed by Fred Schepisi and adapted from the novel by Nobel Laureate Patrick White. It stars Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush and Golden Globe winner Judy Davis as a brother and sister struggling with the increasingly deteriorating health of their mother, Elizabeth Hunter, played by Charlotte Rampling. This wonderful drama sees the dysfunctional upper-class family controlled by the dying Elizabeth, who manipulates them with her inheritance as well as her love, threatening to leave her entire estate to a mysterious German dancer. Amongst all this Elizabeth becomes increasingly obsessed with choosing the time and manner of her demise, refusing to let death take her by surprise. The stellar cast are magnificent and the beautiful setting of Sydney’s suburbs along with an extraordinary story and script have meant that The Eye Of The Storm has already won several awards at the Australian film festivals. It’s taken almost two years to be released outside Australia, but it is well worth the wait. A beautiful drama peppered with touching moments as well as laughs and an incredibly poignant ending. 8 Set amidst the icy wilderness of Alaska, The Frozen Ground charts a truly chilling tale based on real life events. A serial killer has gone unnoticed for 13 years in Anchorage. However, as the body count of street girls starts to add up, fear starts to spread. Alaskan state trooper Glenn Flothe (Cage) sets out to bring an end to the murderous rampage of Robert Hansen (Cusack), a seemingly stable and unassuming family man. When one of Hansen’s victims, Cindy Paulson (Hudgens) escapes, she reveals key information on her would-be killer to Flothe who embarks on a personal manhunt to stop Hansen in his deadly tracks before he snares another victim. Stepping out of his usual casting comfort zone - and the rom-coms we’ve all grown to love him in - John Cusack takes on the role of the killer in this sinister tale. Vanessa Hudgens, meanwhile, is distancing herself from her Disney Channel roots to play stripper Cindy, while Nicolas Cage is heroic as the state trooper on his perilous mission. Get set for a nail-biter and nerve-jangler of a thriller. Amy Evans

8 This fifth film version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic is setting out to be groundbreaking in more ways than one, not that you would expect anything less of director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet). Set in the roaring twenties of New York, Gatsby’s story doesn’t seem the likeliest contender for a 3D release, but given Luhrmann’s tendency for dizzying spectacle and outrageous set design, this might be the perfect choice. In addition to the technology makeover, there may be some changes to the much-loved and familiar story, at least, as far as point of view. The novel and film alike are told from the perspective of war veteranturned bond salesman Nick Carraway (Maguire), but this adaptation aims to show Carraway writing a book about his experiences with Jay Gatsby and the other characters he encounters in flapper-era Long Island. How it does this is likely to be the outstanding difference between novel and screen. Expect striking performances from Carey Mulligan as Daisy, Leonardo DiCaprio as the enigmatic millionaire, and a dazzling and diverse soundtrack that’s a character in itself. Cheyenne Campbell

8 Full of smart banter, laugh out loud absurdities and memorable cameos, The Hangover was the biggest breakout hit of 2009. Grossing more than $500 million worldwide, the misadventures of Phil (Cooper), Stu (Helms), Alan (Galifianakis), Doug (Bartha) and Mr Chow (Jeong) made for a surprise seminal comedy hit. Having survived another stag weekend in Thailand during Part II, the Wolf Pack has reunited for one final journey - their most outrageous yet. When potato shaped man-child, Alan (Galifianakis), loses his father, he is overwhelmed by grief and the gang are forced to stage an intervention. En route to a support clinic, they are attacked by masked henchmen and taken to mob boss, John Goodman. He explains that Mr Chow has stolen $21 million dollars from him and the group must help him recover it - or they will be killed. With a trailer that includes Chow firing pot shots at a rooster, Phil scaling a skyscraper using a link of bedsheets and Alan towing a giraffe down a freeway (with little thought for low bridges), Part III promises a fitting finale for the Wolf Pack. 8 From Scary Movie and Scary Movie 2 star Marlon Wayans comes this laugh out loud horror parody. Poking fun at the found footage style used by Paranormal Activity and The Devil Inside, A Haunted House follows young couple Malcolm and Kisha, played by Marlon Wayans and Essence Atkins, as they move in to their new home. Little do they know a demonic spirit inhabits the house and is doing everything in its power to stop the couple sleeping together, including possessing Kisha. Determined to get his sex life back on track, Malcolm calls everyone for help, including a gay psychic, a priest, a team of ghost busters and even a street gang. Hilarity ensues. Similar to the entries of the Scary Movie franchise, A Haunted House is a spoof loaded with toilet humour, smutty jokes and slapstick style comedy. The very antithesis of high brow comedy, expect outrageous antics and a plethora of fart jokes. A thorough satire of the supernatural horror genre that asks what the average guy would do when faced with his very own haunting. Exceptionally crude, occasionally vulgar and mostly hilarious. 8 ‘Hummingbird’, the directorial debut of the Oscar nominated writer of ‘Eastern Promises’ and ‘Dirty Pretty Things’, could very well sneak up on you as one of the most entertaining films of 2013. Jason Statham, star of many an action-packed, testosterone-fuelled action movie, bucks his own trend by playing completely against type. He starts the film by portraying an unshaven homeless man, Joey Jones, who’s on the run from a military court martial. Formerly an ex-special forces soldier, he explores the criminal underworld of London and takes an opportunity when it arises to steal another man’s identity. In the process he becomes a fighter for justice who works to ensure his clients are protected from vicious thugs. On paper it sounds worryingly like ‘Hummingbird’ transforms into another passable Statham action vehicle, but the man has rarely been so enjoyable to watch kick ass on the streets of London. He transforms himself into something that’s almost unrecognisable, and which might just signal ‘Hummingbird’ as his personal masterpiece. Yes it’s very violent, foul-mouthed and crammed with edge-of-your-seat action, but we can’t have Statham being too unrecognisable can we? Matthew Brigden

8 Ariel Vromen’s crime thriller tells the intriguing true story of Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski, a notorious contract killer who worked for various New York and New Jersey crime families. Reportedly, during his long career as a gun for hire Kuklinski killed between one hundred and two hundred and fifty people, but what makes his story compelling is that he managed to maintain an innocent alter-lifestyle in which his family had no idea of his murderous profession. The Iceman stars Michael Shannon, who audiences will recognise from starring roles in Take Shelter and Revolutionary Road. Shannon has built his career with exceptional performances as complex, troubled characters and he’s sure to excel as The Iceman. For his dramatisation of the true life events, Vromen has assembled an ensemble supporting cast full of talent. The film stars Winona Ryder as Kuklinski’s naive wife Deborah, Ray Liotta in his familiar mobster character and brief appearances from David Schwimmer, Chris Evans and James Franco. All signs point towards The Iceman being a film that is as cool as it is fascinating. Lee Curtis

8 Three years after the found-footage supernatural horror The Last Exorcism was released, director Eli Roth returns, with Nell Sweetzer (Bell) in tow, in The Last Exorcism Part 2. Now the events from the first film have become the subject of an internet sensation, this latest outing picks up from where the action finished. Nell is found terrified and alone in rural Louisiana and realises that she cannot remember proportions of the previous months only that she is the only surviving member of her family. However, just as Nell begins the difficult process of starting a new life in New Orleans - where she makes friends and tentatively inches her way back to normality - the evil force that once possessed her is back with unimaginably horrific plans that mean her last exorcism was just the beginning. Unlike its predecessor, Part 2 is not presented in found-footage format. After the first instalment opened to positive reviews in 2010, The Last Exorcism Part 2 looks set to offer plenty of chills and bloodcurdling supernatural scenes when it is unleashed on audiences this June. 8 Back in 1984, then-relative-newcomer Tim Roth won critical acclaim playing a newbie hitman in The Hit. He’s come full circle here in director Craig Viveiros’s English road movie, this time playing an aged gangster facing the last job of his career. 19-year-old slacker Adam (O’Connell) crashes his step-father Peter’s Mercedes, and in lieu of repayment, reluctantly agrees to the task of chauffeuring Peter’s friend Roy (Roth) for the day. The awkward and unlikely pair hit the road through rural parts of Northern England, with Roy not thrilled about his young driver. While Adam isn’t blind to his step-dad’s shady business dealings, he gets more than he bargains for when he learns the true purpose of the journey. Along the way, Roy finds himself taking the wayward youth under his wing and teaching him the art of dismemberment and body disposal. The crime they set out to commit is witnessed by a young backpacker - who steals their car in her escape - and the chase is on. Don’t miss this offbeat thriller that’s sure to play on the chemistry of the leads and mounting grisly tension throughout. Cheyenne Campbell

8 Two teenage boys, played by Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland, come across a fugitive - the title character Mud (Matthew McConaughey, who gives a performance which critics are calling his best ever). Mud forms a pact with the two boys to help him be reunited with his true love, Juniper (Reese Witherspoon), but his past is murkier than the boys ever imagined. He’s evading bounty hunters who are relentlessly on his trail. Writer and director Jeff Nichols’ previous film from 2011, ‘Take Shelter’, showed that he knows how to force audiences to enter a troubled individual’s mind and make them question not just the protagonist but everything else too. ‘Mud’ continues this theme of paranoia and erratic self-evaluation and presents a character with such an ambiguous attitude to life that it’s clear to see why McConaughey has given such a brilliant performance. But he can’t take all the credit - the two boys Sheridan and Lofland give equally powerhouse performances as their lives intertwine with the rather complicated life of Mud. Nichols has made a classic, which is intriguing considering his career has only just started. Matthew Brigden

8 Acclaimed Bollywood director Mira Nair, brings to our screens her next sure-fire classic after 2009’s unexpectedly disappointing ‘Amelia’. ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ boasts an impressive cast, including Liev Schreiber, Kiefer Sutherland and British ‘Four Lions’ star Riz Ahmed in the lead as young Pakistani man Changez. Changez loves the western world and he is chasing corporate success on the infamous Wall Street. But his passion for finding his own American Dream is interrupted when the 9/11 attacks happen. Whereas most people had a choice over whose side to take, Changez’s ethnicity means that he gets nasty looks in the street from people who don’t even know him. Needless to say, his determination to succeed in America is threatened as people, including increasingly suspicious airport security, find it hard to trust him. He becomes embroiled in a difficult conflict where he somehow has to strike a balance between following his western dreams and considering his family who would prefer him to move back home, on top of an unexpected hostage crisis. 8 “You think your world is safe? It is an illusion...” In 2009, JJ Abrams rebooted (not to mention ‘resurrected’) one of the world’s most beloved franchises. It was fast-paced, explosive and at times genuinely funny - this was not your father’s Star Trek. With the timeline rewritten and origins remapped, this sequel stands fully unbound from the tethers of either the 70’s or 90’s Trek iterations. Bigger, bolder and with the fanboys now fully converted, Into Darkness will define sci-fi for this generation. Picking up several years after events of the first film, the Enterprise is recalled to Earth, amid a deepening crisis. Betrayed from within by one of the Federation’s greatest agents (Cumberbatch), Earth lies in tatters. Damaged and beaten, Kirk (Pine) and Spock (Quinto) command the Enterprise to pursue him across the galaxy. This release stands almost bittersweet - it could be Abrahms’ swansong in the new universe he helped recreate. Having seen such success with Trek, he was drafted to change the fate of the other ‘Star’ saga. A 2015 release date for Episode VII is now confirmed; should the Enterprise survive, a greater battle still lies ahead. Chris Wasey

8 The Borgens are a family of writers who are simultaneously consumed by the desire to write and their tumultuous love lives. Novelist Bill Borgens (Kinnear) hasn’t written a word since his wife Erica (Connelly) left him. He is having a casual affair with his married neighbor Tricia (Bell), but she isn’t providing the inspiration he needs. His promiscuous daughter Samantha (Collins) is publishing her first novel and avoiding love having witnessed the destruction of her parents’ marriage, while his son Rusty (Wolff) is an aspiring writer but hasn’t accumulated enough life experience to write anything worthwhile. The trailer is more than a tad reminiscent of Crazy, Stupid, Love and, while the absence of a topless Ryan Gosling could put a bit of a dampener on things, the moving tale of this fractured family and the stellar cast, which features a host of up-and-coming talent, will more than make up for it. As the family falls in and out of love on their quest for happiness, we will see that age does not necessarily equal wisdom - and that endings can make for new beginnings. Emma Farley

When the apocalypse hits during a party at James Franco’s house, Franco, Rogen and a host of other comedy stars, including Jay Baruchel and Jonah Hill, have to man-up in the ultimate battle for survival. With cameos from stars such as Emma Watson, Paul Rudd and Rihanna, This is the End is sure to be a massive hit. Emma Farley
