Dune: Part Two IN CINEMAS 1 MARCH

Director Denis Villeneuve / Starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler / Genre Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller Paul Atreides is on a path of selfdiscovery… and revenge. Part One of the pulsating adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel depicts the murder of Duke Leo Atreides, the massacre of his military, and the fall of his house at the hands of House Harkonnen and the lethal Saradaukar legions. Only Paul, his widowed

mother, and a few others – including Josh Brolin’s Gurney – survive and set out in desperate search of safety in the wild dunes of Arrakis. But that was merely the beginning… Taken in by Javier Bardem’s Stilgar, Zendaya’s skilled warrior Chani, and the rest of the native Fremen, Paul and Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica must learn to live in this mysterious new culture built upon desert-power. An ancient prophecy begins to unfold around them all as they attempt to ride the massive sandworms, balance love with duty, and lead the fightback against those who plotted their annihilation. Like a true Arrakis sandstorm, Denis Villeneuve’s film blew audiences away with its stunning visuals, Hans Zimmer’s score, and ensemble cast, who return alongside new blood with Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and Christopher Walken raising the heat. It’s Dune on an even more epic scale in a greater sci-fi spectacle culminating in a war to end all wars.

House Atreides The House Stark of space who fly a hawk banner. Honour and morality are the Atreides’ shining virtues, ones that will be tested like never before in this battle-filled quest for revenge.

House Harkonnen Led by Stellan Skarsgård’s Baron, and with Dave Bautista’s Rabban and Austin Butler’s FeydRautha as fearsome warriors, the powerful and ruthless great house are known for their cruelty and willingness to do whatever it takes to gain power.

House Corrino Christopher Walken’s Emperor Shaddam IV was a supposed conspirator in the brutal attack on House Atreides and his movements will be even more influential here. His young daughter, Florence Pugh’s Princess Irulan, has her own agenda as she searches the dunes for secrets buried below the sand.

Sir Anthony Hopkins takes centre stage in the remarkable real-life story of Nicholas Winton, an ordinary man who has an extraordinary impact on hundreds of child refugees during the Second World War. WORDS ROBB SHEPPARD

▲ SCAN ME ▲

One Life IN CINEMAS 1 JANUARY

Director James Hawes / Starring Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Flynn / Genre Biography, Drama, History Nicholas Winton, later nicknamed the British Schindler, risks everything to evacuate more than six-hundred refugee children from Prague on the eve of the Second World War. Through Johnny Flynn’s performance, One Life documents a youthful and heroic Winton in the late-1930s as he plans and executes his extraordinary rescue, while Anthony Hopkins’ iteration of the elderly Winton sees him in the late eighties where he’s surprised by those he saved during a recording of That’s Life! and comes to terms with the fact that he couldn’t save more. Now in his mid-eighties himself, Hopkins is one of the most interesting periods of his career, with all of his real-life experience informing his characters onscreen and burdening every slight gesture with deep meaning.

When he wipes away a tear, the audience does too. He’s joined by Helena Bonham Carter as Winton’s mother, Babette, who’s often overlooked but was integral to the venture, as well as Jonathan Pryce as Martin Blake, the man who first invited Winton to the one-time Czechoslovakia. One Life may feel too close for comfort in the current climate, but this story of hope and heroism during our darkest days is exactly the antidote that’s needed in the presentday news cycle with its message that whoever saves a single life, saves the entire world.

Octogenarian Icon Hopkins lifts Dr Hanniba l “The Cannibal” Lecter from the pages of Thomas Harris’ novel to bec part of the cultural zeitgeis ome t. Solely responsible for soaring sales of chianti and fava beans sinc e 1991.

Hopkins gives God-like gravitas to his performance as Odin, father of Thor and Loki and the King of Asgard. Still managing to inflect pathos as he reaches the end of his reign proves Hopkins truly is a marvel.

In his second Academy Awardwinning lead role, Hopkins is joined by fellow Oscar-winner Olivia Colman as he portrays a father struggling while dementia unravels the reality around him. Take tissues for this devastating drama.

Beautiful sea air turns blue in a British black comedy where a small seaside town gets rocked by a scandal that triggers a hilarious whodunnit. WORDS LEE CURTIS

Wicked Little Letters IN CINEMAS 23 FEBRUARY

Director Thea Sharrock / Starring Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley / Genre Comedy, History, Mystery It’s Littlehampton, in the 1920s, a quiet, picturesque seaside town where everyone knows everyone and their business. The peace is soon shattered when several townspeople receive obscene letters in the post from an unknown sender. Fingers immediately point at fiery Irish migrant Rose, who now stands charged with the crime. The thing is, Rose swears – quite literally – that it wasn’t her. This prompts the town’s young police officer Gladys Moss to stand up, against the male authority figures at the station, to solve the case and find the real culprit. Reuniting onscreen after their dual role in The Lost Daughter, Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley star as neighbours Edith Swan and Rose Gooding, two very different women whose tumultuous relationship

eventually softens as Rose’s rowdiness brings Edith out of her deeply-conservative shell. This stranger-than-fiction true story becomes a classically British feature-length comedy, with the letter writer’s unfiltered foul-mouthed freedom from societal standards scandalising the whole town. Wicked Little Letters features a who’s who of British talent, with a supporting cast that boasts BAFTA-winners Joanna Scanlan and Malachi Kirby, as well as Timothy Spall, Anjana Vasan, Hugh Skinner, Gemma Jones, Lolly Adefope, and Eileen Atkins. Looking for a real laugh? This absurd whodunnit’s one we wholeheartedly swear by.

Swear Jar

Mind Your Language! Wicked Little Letters shocked us with a scandalously foul-mouthed trailer, but where does the film stack up against cinema’s sweariest greats?

The Wolf Of Wall Street

In Martin Scorsese’s crime epic set in the world of high finance, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, and the rest of the star-studded cast shatter the record for the most F-bombs in a film.

Uncut Gems

Adam Sandler is a seasoned swearer in comedies, but it’s his turn against type in this tense thriller that follows the chaotic exploits of a gambling addict that’s his and one of history’s most profane films.

Nil By Mouth

Gary Oldman’s only ever directorial effort is a British classic, an unflinching depiction of domestic violence in South East London that features some of the very worst language ever heard onscreen.

FRANKENSTONE Emma Stone stars as Bella Baxter in this quirky tale of a young woman who’s brought back from the dead to once again find her way in the world… poor thing. WORDS ROBB SHEPPARD

Poor Things IN CINEMAS 12 JANUARY

Director Yorgos Lanthimos / Starring Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo / Genre Romance, Sci-Fi With more than a doff of the top hat to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Poor Things offers a gothic slice of sci-fi romance that sees Emma Stone’s scientifically resurrected Bella Baxter challenging the authoritative men around her as she becomes more and more autonomous. Winner of the 2023 Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, Poor Things showcases Yorgos Lanthimos’ unconventional and dark sense of humour even more than his previous pieces as Bella’s outsider status makes her the perfect vehicle with which to highlight the absurdity of Victorian-era customs and societal norms. Willem Dafoe is something of a scientist himself and almost unrecognisable as

Stone Age

After announcing herself on the teen comedy scene, Emma Stone has since risen to become one of the biggest names in Hollywood.

Birdman

Dr Goodwin Baxter, the man who looks more like the monster than the Dr Frankenstein, while Mark Ruffalo is as handsome as ever as the man who falls in love with Bella, lawyer Duncan Wedderburn. Lanthimos’ films increasingly come with an air of expectation, particularly after his critically acclaimed The Favourite garnered far more mainstream attention than his earlier indie efforts. Like Bella herself, the further Lanthimos reaches, the more intriguing he becomes, with the audience left wondering just what it is he’ll do next. In short, don’t miss this.

Emma Stone earned her first Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of Sam, the disillusioned daughter of Riggan, an actor famous for portraying the iconic Birdman in his prime.

The Favourite

Elaborate architecture, medieval madness, and a twisted romance make The Favourite Stone and Lanthimos’ most successful foray into the gothic. They reunite for Poor Things, with Stone also serving as producer.

Cruella

Stone serves up sensational gothic stylings for the origin story of the infamous Disney villain, Cruella De Vil. Residing in Hell Hall, she sports a monochromatic bouffant, blood-red lips, and evil intent.

GETTING CHILLS

With Gozer’s return in the rear-view mirror, the Spenglers go back to where it all began to help the original Ghostbusters prevent a Death Chill from taking over New York… and the world. WORDS AARON POTTER

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire IN CINEMAS 29 MARCH

Director Gil Kenan / Starring Paul Rudd, Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon / Genre Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi After bringing the Ghostbusters franchise back from the dead for a new generation with Ghostbusters: Afterlife, writer-director Jason Reitman returns with a sequel but relinquishes directing duties to his screenwriting partner Gil Kenan for the fifth instalment in the supernatural series. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire picks up soon after Afterlife’s epic and emotional finale, with the Spengler trio – Mckenna Grace’s Phoebe, Carrie Coon’s Callie, and Finn Wolfhard’s Trevor – plus Paul Rudd’s Gary Grooberson swapping the small town of Summerville for the Big Apple. The reason: they’ve been called to help as an icy cold evil dubbed “the Death Chill” threatens to plunge New York into a second Ice Age.

Back in New York, the nostalgia is ramped up even higher, especially with original Ghostbusters Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman, Dan Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz, and Ernie Hudson’s Winston Zeddemore back in ghost-busting action. The old firehouse is back, the Ecto-1 is back, as are the proton packs, too. But those goosebumps aren’t just from nostalgia chills, there’s a new frozen enemy in town that’s sure to send a shiver down everyone’s spine and put both generations of Ghostbusters to the ultimate test as they prove that they truly ain’t afraid of no ghost.

KICK SOME ICE The Day After Tomorrow Ghosbusters: Frozen Empire isn’t the only time New York City has been plunged into a second Ice Age onscreen. Roland Emmerich’s disaster masterpiece submerges the Statue of Liberty and other iconic landmarks under hundreds of feet of snow.

Snowpiercer Chris Evans plays against type in Bong Joon-Ho’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi about class warfare onboard a superfast train endlessly circumnavigating a frozen Earth. Based on a French novel from 1982, Snowpiercer didn’t get a wide release but has since amassed a cult following.

Frozen Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen gets a sprinkling of Disney magic in the animated classic where Elsa sweeps the city of Arendelle in snow. There’s no sign of love for the films thawing with two new sequels in the works. ▼ CLICK ME ▼

Ryan Gosling is a stuntman on a mission to find a missing movie star in the outrageous action-comedy from David Leitch. WORDS LEE CURTIS

The Fall Guy IN CINEMAS 2 MAY

Director David Leitch / Starring Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Aaron TaylorJohnson / Genre Action, Comedy He’s thrilled us with John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, and Bullet Train, but the action isn’t stopping as stunt-coordinatorturned-director David Leitch unleashes a new wild ride where Hollywood stunts are very real. Ryan Gosling is Colt Seavers, a supercool stuntman who needs to brace himself for some of the most dangerous action he’s ever seen. Back in action after a brief spell off grid for some self-care, Colt is doing what he does best on the set of the new must-see blockbuster that’s being directed by Emily Blunt’s Jody Moreno, who just so happens to be the same girl he ghosted before his hiatus.

It’s a bid to charm his way back into her good books, but it’s going to take the biggest stunt of his life to rekindle their romance. The opportunity soon presents itself when Jody’s star Tom Ryder goes missing and the film’s uncompromising producer, played by Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham, tasks Colt with doing whatever it takes to find him. Rescue her hero, save her film, win her heart: Colt’s task seems simple, but it’s anything but. Safety harnesses are off as this stunt double soon finds himself in big trouble and braving big-screen explosions, car chases, and gunfights for real. A new action-comedy from one of the most exciting directors around with an A-list cast that’s to die for… The Fall Guy gets one big thumbs-up.
