Gracing our screens will be a lush culinary delight based on the international bestseller by Richard C. Morais, The Hundred-Foot Journey. This foodie tale follows the Kadam family’s arrival from India to a small French village with a cultural cross-section that reveals hearts and hopes. With the success of the Hunger Games, it’s no surprise that other young adult dystopian stories are making the leap to cinema as well, and with James Dashner’s adventure trilogy, we have a thrilling new foray into the world of adrenaline-coursing teen sci-fi to keep us going with The Maze Runner. And then, finally, after months of reminiscing and speculation, fans can finally reconnect through the reboot of Eastman and Laird’s one-of-a-kind creation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (you’re already singing the theme song, aren’t you?). So whether you’re looking for a different kind of love story, a futuristic adventure, or a long-awaited reinvention, there’ll be ThE something for everyone as the B a R g ODIEs nights close in. Until next time! O

DINNER AND A MOVIE

ROOM FOR DESSERT? swedish director and screenwriter Lasse Hallström is no stranger to stories that document the sudden arrival of unwelcome outsiders, but more importantly, the life-altering bonds they form with the wary community through the universal language of food appealing to the cravings of both our hearts and taste buds. 2000’s Chocolat seduced audiences with its impassioned narrative, uniting Johnny depp and Juliette Binoche through their shared affections for cocoa beans and each other. the film received five oscar nominations, won several critics’ awards, and, over a decade later, still remains a beloved example of romantic, drama-filled cinema.

rarely faced culinary competition… until now. A twist of fate arrives with the recently displaced Kadam family and their intention to open an Indian restaurant a mere hundred feet from Le Saule Pleurer, ruffling feathers in the close-knit village, particularly those of the frosty Madame Mallory. Luckily, the family’s patriarch, Papa (Om Puri), has a secret weapon in the form of his virtuosic chef son, Hassan, a master of spices and rambunctious flavours. This clash of both cultures and cooking styles will undoubtedly whip up a delightfully contemplative and colourful journey of selfdiscovery - adding a few dashes of veteran actors and exciting newcomers, and garnished with luscious food-centric cinematography. If you’re seeking a palate cleanser for the aftertaste of action hero bombast and slapstick summer comedy, The Hundred-Foot Journey will whisk you away to a land packed with passion, Gallic charm, and an excellent finish. HEROES IN A HALF-SHELL

14 September / October 2014

Film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Release date 17 October / Director Jonathan Liebesman / Starring Megan Fox, Will Arnett, William Fichtner / Genre Action, Adventure, Comedy

I

n their early nineties heyday, this posse of pizza munching adolescents named after Renaissance artists was one of the world’s most popular children’s television franchises, garnering even greater commercial success than the robots in disguise. This time around, the Turtles will be drawing on both grown-up fans eagerly anticipating a trip down memory lane, and a whole generation of new rabid fans-to-be. Director Jonathan Liebesman may not be a household name, but has a history of hardearned breakout success, with unsettling horror in his feature debut, Darkness Falls, and then with the gritty, skull thumping ‘war-moviewith-aliens’, Battle Los Angeles. What most people will notice is the producer credit; ‘auteur of action’, Michael Bay. Back in 2005, Liebesman caught Bay’s eye with Rings, and Bay then called upon Liebesman to direct the 2006 entry, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The

Beginning, which cemented their professional partnership. Helmsman of commercial juggernauts Armageddon, Bad Boys, and Transformers, his inimitable style flashes throughout the trailer for this new Turtles saga: huge sections of a city skyline destroyed, flashes of high-octane battle, a lead character mortally wounded. While earlier TMNT drafts offered more radical deviations (turtle aliens!), the premise here sticks close to the 1987 film. Four turtle brothers become mutated and physically enhanced, exhibiting superhuman strength and agility. Trained by wise sensai rat, Splinter, the team act as guardians of New York City, battling the sinister Foot Clan led by ruthless assassin, Shedder. During the course of their quest, they befriend reporter April O’Neil, their sole human link. Identified by their coloured bandanas, each turtle wields a particular skill. Leonardo (blue) leads: a warrior highly skilled with ninja swords; Donatello (purple), the most intellectual of the team, uses a bo staff and (for those who remember the original cartoon opener) ’does machines’; Raphael (red), the most volatile of the four and often at odds with the disciplined Leonardo, uses dual sai; and finally, nunchuk-wielding Michelangelo (orange) is often more interested in parties and pizza than training in the ways of the ninja. In this interpretation’s origin story, the brothers are transformed not by a radiation leak but by a scientifically engineered mutagen (rescued from the lab in their infancy by April, played as an adult by Megan Fox). However, it’s Shredder that has undergone the most significant overhaul. A cyborg standing at nearly eight feet tall, he

wields monstrous katanas that can be dispersed into smaller blades and thrown with incredible accuracy. Even the combined power of the TMNT struggle to put a stop to his spreading corruption. Times have changed for the Turtles, and the audience has changed with them. In the eighties, the campy cartoon was heavily censored in the UK (many will remember the ‘Hero’ turtles, and that Michelangelo’s nunchucks were never actually used when he was fighting). Now, as audiences crave high-impact action, the Ninja Turtles keep their name and full arsenal. Whether you are 35, 25, or 15, at least one adaptation of the Turtles will have been part of your childhood, and it is this vast audience that makes the movie so intriguing. The recent extended trailer suggests the right tone has been struck, a wry humour (“Hey look, he’s doing his Batman voice”) that gives a nod to older fans, the light hearted silliness that made the Turtles so instantly lovable (snowboarding on their ‘halfshells’), and frenetic, highly stylised combat that post-Bourne audiences demand. With more than a dozen $200 million movies each year duking it out for our hearts and minds in a packed autumn season, TMNT’s approach has been a welcome mixture of nostalgia and freshness. Where other blockbusters jettison a raft of increasingly spoiler-filled teasers in the year leading up to release, Ninja Turtles has stayed deliberately quiet. It is the sign of a confident blockbuster that doesn’t need to pummel you into submission, and with two sequels already green-lit, what more reason do you need to go and relive your youth? Turtle power!

ou wake up, stripped of your memories and deposited in the centre of an enormous maze. Sounds like a harrowing dream, right? Well, this nightmare is now reality for a teenage boy named Thomas as he becomes the latest inmate in an extraordinary prison. Adapted from the first book in James Dashner’s best-selling young adult science fiction trilogy, The Maze Runner kick-starts the epic adventure of Thomas and the other prisoners who are trapped at the heart of a mystifying labyrinth. Left to their own devices and unaware of what they’ve done to end up there, all these teenage captives know is that the answer to their

freedom lies somewhere deep inside. Soon after his arrival, Thomas joins the Maze Runners - a separate group who are responsible for navigating the constantlyshifting maze - and begins mapping out its design so he can guide his fellow inmates to the exit and reveal the chilling secret of who has imprisoned them, and why. The group are making steady progress until Teresa, the first ever female prisoner, arrives with a message informing the boys that they no longer have the luxury of time to solve this enigmatic puzzle. An ensemble of exciting young talent make up the cast of this enticing Lord of the Flies-esque dystopian adventure, including Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf), Kaya Scodelario (Skins), Will Poulter (Son of Rambow), and Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Love Actually, Game of Thrones) standing out in their roles as Thomas, Teresa, Gally, and Newt, respectively.

The Maze

We’ve seen futuristic prisons before, but Wes Ball’s sci-fi adventure unveils one of the most inventive: an ever-shifting, circular mosaic of individual mazes, made up of three main sections: the GLaDe encased by four enormous walls, this field sits at the centre and serves as a safe haven for the prisoners. the NarroWs Beyond the Glade’s walls is an overgrown network of slim passages, but what makes this concrete jungle so difficult to navigate is its endlessly morphing pattern. the surrouND the Narrows gives way to eight wider labyrinths where the vile, man-eating mechanical creatures called Grievers lie in wait.

Annie Release 26 DecembeR / Director Will Gluck / starring Jamie Foxx, Quvenzhané Wallis, Rose Byrne / Genre Comedy, Drama, Family

A classic that has delighted audiences for generations comes to the big screen with a new, contemporary vision in Columbia Pictures’ comedy, Annie. Director/Producer/Screenwriter Will Gluck and a team of talented producers team up to provide a modern telling that captures the magic of the classic characters and original show. Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mum Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) - advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s selfassured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.
