FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS

HEART AND SOLE A group of shanty-singing fishermen net themselves a record deal in a feel-good British comedy-drama inspired by the true story of Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends. F

ive fishermen, a shopkeeper, a potter, an engineer, and two builders - ten friends who went from singing in their local harbour to securing a record deal, a UK top ten album, and playing on the pyramid stage at Glastonbury. The tale of Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends is so remarkable that it’s no surprise to see it receive the big screen treatment, with an ensemble cast including Daniel Mays, Tuppence Middleton, James Purefoy, Dave Johns, and Noel Clarke.

Filmed on location in Cornwall, Fisherman’s Friends follows a big city music executive who finds himself in the small village of Port Isaac where he’s pranked by his boss into signing a group of shanty-singing fishermen to their label. His attempts to lure the fishermen and their families into the music industry are met with scepticism, and as he’s drawn further into their community and traditional way of life, he comes to realise that success may not mean fame and fortune, but friendship and happiness. From Kids In Love director Chris Foggin and the producers of Finding Your Feet, Fisherman’s Friends hopes to land similar success in finding an appetite for feel-good comfort food cinema.

SAVING GRACE (2000) Doc Martin might have put Port Isaac on the map for most, but it was a location for this often-forgotten wacky British comedy first.

THE BAD EDUCATION MOVIE (2015) Alfie Wickers takes his class on a school trip to Cornwall only to get recruited into a terrorist organisation fighting for Cornish independence.

MY COUSIN RACHEL (2017) The most recent du Maurier classic that received the big screen treatment was fittingly filmed in Cornwall.

HAVE YOURSELF A WILD RIDE A child's imagination comes alive in a thrilling new animated adventure from Nickeloden Movies. Welcome to Wonder Park! WORDS AARON POTTER RELEASE DATE 12 APRIL / Director Dylan Brown / Starring Brianna Denski, Mila Kunis, Tom Baker / Genre Animation, Family, Fantasy

F

eaturing the voices of Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Garner, Mila Kunis, Joe Sugg, Caspar Lee, and Tom Baker, Wonder Park is an animated film set within a world where a child’s creativity can bring the wonders of her thought-to-be-imaginary amusement park to life. Tapping into the limitless amount of ingenuity that comes from being a child with big dreams, the movie follows June, a girl who one day finds that the Wonderland of her childhood playtime has become real. It isn’t all rides and wild slides, however, as June and friends soon learn that the park has become infested by an evil horde of Chimpanzombies. Only by working together with the park’s furry cohorts of bears and beavers can June restore peace to the land of her imagination. Wonder Park promises to be a charming and fun-fuelled ride for all the family, proving that just because you grow up doesn’t mean you have to lose that special spark of imagination. Should the movie set audiences laughing, there’s already a Wonder Park TV spin-off in the works to hit the small screen later in the year.

16 March / April 2019

Theatrical Theme Parks JURASSIC PARK A park’s ability to instil both wonder and dread was first cemented when Sam Neil’s Dr Alan Grant stepped off the Jeep. A land of cloned dinosaurs might be good in theory, but Jurassic Park highlighted the downsides.

TROUBLEMAKER THEME PARK Robert Rodriguez’s first Spy Kids sequel, Island Of Lost Dreams, raised the amusement park bar with a ride that juggles its visitors in the air. A landmark architectural achievement, but it didn’t do the kids’ tummies any good.

SPOOKY ISLAND Scooby and the gang’s first big screen adventure saw them travel to the mysterious land of Rowan Atkinson’s Spooky Island. It lived up to its name, even if there was a maniacal Great Dane behind it.

YOU’LL BELIEVE AN ELEPHANT CAN FLY Tim Burton’s live-action remake of the Disney animated classic sees the return of our hero, but also the return of the heartache. Bring tissues. WORDS ROBB SHEPPARD RELEASE DATE 29 MARCH / Director Tim Burton / Starring Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito, Michael Keaton / Genre Family, Fantasy

F

ollowing Beauty And The Beast and The Jungle Book, Dumbo is the latest Disney family favourite to be brought slap-bang up to date via the live-action treatment. In case you ran away to the circus having never heard, Dumbo is a baby elephant with unusually large ears. So enormous, in fact, that all it takes is a gust of wind and a flap of the earlobes and suddenly he’s flying high. This makes him a sure-fire hit with thrill-seeking

audiences, although unfortunately, the Big Top and the people within it aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. Director Tim Burton does love a recurring cast (who doesn’t?) and Dumbo resurrects one of our favourite double acts from his Batman Returns days, with Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito taking leading roles. Eva Green comes back to the fold after Burton’s Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, then throw in Colin Farrell and you’ve got yourself a killer cast. As with any Burton film, expect velvety visuals, a hefty helping of gothic imagery, and a soaring musical score by Danny Elfman. Roll up, roll up; the circus is coming to town.

THE REIMAGINATION OF TIM BURTON PLANET OF THE APES (2001) Burton lived up to the phrase “reimagining” when he tackled this 1968 sci-fi. Ground-breaking makeup and effects gave us some magnificent monkey business from Tim Roth.

CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (2005) Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory enchanted fans in 1971, so audiences were eager to see Burton’s take of the Roald Dahl favourite. Although Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka was more Michael Jackson than Gene Wilder, we still enjoyed those pesky kids getting their chocolatey comeuppance.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND (2010) In 2010 Burton returned us to Wonderland, with Mia Wasikowska as a nineteen-year-old Alice. Audiences were brought closer than ever to Lewis Carroll’s original landscape through eye-popping CGI.

SPEAKING THE LANGUAGE OF HORROR While unusual for a writer/director to share their influences on a live project, Jordan Peele assigned Nyong’o ten genre definers to study so she’d have a “shared language” for creating Us. Here’s three from that list:

JAWS (1975) Spielberg nailed the premise of creating suspense through what’s off-screen as much as what’s seen. Us promises an unseen monster element in a more human horror story.

THE SHINING (1980)

The cult King/Kubrick classic explores the horrors within a personality, and its destructive effect on family. Expect this in Us, particularly with matriarchal character Adelaide Wilson.

US

OUR OW WORST ENEMIES

THE SIXTH SENSE (1999)

A supernatural horror with unsettling reality from M. Night Shyamalan, master of the surprise ending. Will Peele spring his own upon us here?

Academy Award-winning director of Get Out, Jordan Peele presents Us with a new nightmare for a family of four who go head-to-head with their demon counterparts. WORDS JIM ROBERTS RELEASE DATE 22 MARCH / Director Jordan Peele / Starring Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss / Genre Horror, Thriller

W

hen Adelaide Wilson (Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o) takes her family to their Santa Cruz beach house and husband Gabe (Winston Duke from Black Panther) sings excitedly along to 18 March / April 2019

“I Got 5 On It,” it seems like a perfect getaway. However, any warm and fuzzy nostalgia is swiftly replaced by fear when the family are confronted with unwanted neighbours. Four masked figures wielding sinister scissors storm the house. Meet the Tethered - the counterparts of each family member, including child actors Shahadi Wright Joseph (soon to be Young Nala in The Lion King) and Evan Alex. The Tethered appear to represent a shadow-like repressed side

of the family’s human opposites. Following his horror and social commentary success Get Out, Peele is keen to keep the audience on the back foot as to what is reality and what is really going on beneath the mask(s). Cue jumping-out-of-your-seat moments and mysterious white rabbits placed throughout the film. What is clear, though, is that each character must confront dark inner demons or face the life-threatening external consequences. But who will win out in the end…them or Us?

JUST SAY THE WORD When troubled teenager Billy Batson encounters an ancient wizard, he is bestowed the powers of a god. To transform into an adult superhero, Shazam, he need only utter the word… WORDS CHRIS WASEY RELEASE DATE 5 APRIL / Director David F. Sandberg / Starring Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong / Genre Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

W

hile DC’s main staples wear their superpowers with a brood and a scowl, Billy Batson is having a blast. A troubled fourteen-year-old boy, Billy has spent his life bouncing between foster homes. After protecting his disabled foster brother from local bullies, the two escape to the subway and are transported to a magical plane where Billy meets an ancient magician the all-powerful Shazam. Chosen as champion for this world, he need only say the wizard’s name to

be transformed (into Zachary Levi, best known as geek super-spy, Chuck). Giddy with excitement, Billy discovers he has strength to rival Superman, can fly, and shoot electricity from his hands. Awesome! But even as a child, great powers come with great responsibilities. Shazam may pummel armed robbers with ease, but when encountering Dr Thaddeus Sivana, a twisted inventor intent on destruction, he discovers magic is not enough. Easter eggs in the trailer confirm that Billy exists in the same world as Batman and Superman, but here, dark and brooding give way to irreverence and absurdism. What child (or adult, for that matter) hasn’t ever imagined having superpowers? Imagine the fun you could have...

“’Sup? I’m A Superhero…” First published in 1940, Billy Batson is one of DC’s longestrunning heroes. However, his first appearance was under a different (now slightly confusing) name, Captain Marvel. Publishing stopped in the seventies and the licence for the name lapsed … to be quickly poached by Marvel. DC relaunched the comic, using the character’s catchphrase “Shazam” as a name and acronym for his powers: S – wisdom of Soloman H – strength of Hercules A – stamina of Atlas Z – power of Zeus A – courage of Achilles M – speed of Mercury Shazam would have many enemies over the next fifty years, but his greatest foes are Dr Sivana and Black Adam. More powerful than Superman (and with Dwayne Johnson confirmed for the role), expect Adam in the sequel.

Directing Fantasy Dexter Fletcher was tasked with bringing Elton’s flamboyant legacy to the silver screen. While some may recognise him from his time in front of the camera starring in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Band Of Brothers, the director has quickly built a reputation for being a major talent behind the camera as well. His previous pictures including Wild Bill, Eddie The Eagle, and the Proclaimers’ musical Sunshine On Leith - earned widespread acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Despite remaining uncredited, Fletcher also stepped up to complete the troubled production of the Oscar nomination-baiting Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody following the controversial departure of director Bryan Singer.
