WElcOmE!

we’re here to whet your appetites for a feast of sizzling summer flicks. Excitement is mounting as Disney’s action epic, ‘The Lone Ranger’, charges onto cinema screens. With the team behind ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ at the helm - and Johnny Depp as the hero’s infamous sidekick Tonto - get set for a riotous adventure in the sun-baked Wild West. From the all-American charm of the Lone Ranger to the brooding, badass form of Wolverine - this season sees the return of a very different but equally compelling hero. He’s ripped, he’s raging and he’s set to deliver a raw and riveting sequel to ‘Origins: Wolverine’ in ‘The Wolverine’. With less brawn but comedy muscle aplenty, Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s apocalyptic caper ‘The World’s End’ is a must-see. Prepare for boozing, body snatching and another hilarious escapade as a pub crawl is disrupted by the small matter of an alien invasion. Enjoy!

Following the popularity of the 2010 online miniseries Mid Morning Matters, Steve Coogan reprises his infamous role for ‘Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa’. From suffering a traumatic nervous breakdown and even accidentally fatally shooting a guest on live television Alan Partridge has had many ups and downs over the course of his lengthy career as a local radio host and national television broadcaster. Actionpacked and hilarious, ‘Alpha Papa’ follows Alan as he desperately seeks to salvage his public image and career while negotiating a potentially violent incident at North Norfolk Digital Radio. Director Declan Lowney, whose television credits include many episodes of Little Britain and Father Ted, joins forces with the reunited Alan Partridge creative team, lead by comedy writers Peter Baynham, Armando Iannucci and Steve Coogan himself, to deliver a feature length dose of the legendary presenter. ‘Alpha Papa’ is unmissable for Alan Partridge fans, but with such talent involved it also includes all the ingredients for a classic British comedy.

FUTURISTIC ACTION SCI-FI

Pacific Rim Release date 12 July / director Guillermo del Toro starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day / Genre Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenceless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse. Oscar nominee Guillermo Del Toro is directing this epic sci-fi, action, adventure. His first film back in the chair since ‘Hellboy II’ in 2008 and if the hype is anything to go by it will have certainly been worth the wait.

For the past 12 months, DEA agent Bobby Trench (Washington) and U.S. naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Wahlberg) have been reluctantly attached at the hip. Working undercover as members of a narcotics syndicate, each man distrusts his partner as much as the criminals. When their attempt to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel and recover millions goes haywire, the pair are suddenly disavowed by their superiors. Now that everyone wants them in jail or in the ground, the only person they can count on is the other. Unfortunately for their pursuers, when good guys spend years pretending to be bad, they pick up a few tricks along the way.

From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the team behind the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise, comes ‘The Lone Ranger,’ a thrilling adventure infused with action and humour, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

David (Jason Sudeikis) is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids - after all, he has his scruples. So what could go wrong? Plenty. Preferring to keep a low profile for obvious reasons, he learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished when he tries to help out some local teens and winds up getting jumped by a trio of gutter punks. Stealing his stash and his cash, they leave him in major debt to his supplier, Brad (Ed Helms). In order to wipe the slate clean - and maintain a clean bill of health - David must now become a big-time drug smuggler by bringing Brad’s latest shipment in from Mexico. Twisting the arms of his neighbours, cynical stripper Rose (Jennifer Aniston) and wannabe customer Kenny (Will Poulter), and the tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen Casey (Emma Roberts), he devises a foolproof plan. One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny RV later, the Millers are headed south of the border for a Fourth of July weekend that is sure to end with a bang.

Walt Disney Pictures takes the familiar characters of the Lone Ranger and his sidekick, Tonto, and delivers them with fresh vision amidst hilarious antics and nonstop action. Shiny new East Coast law degree in hand, Reid’s ready to start doling out justice the old-fashioned way - through the courts. hen children (not to mention the majority of male adults) start discussing ‘who’s the best superhero?’ it’s wise to prepare for an all-night debate. Yet, for all the disagreement, there are certain things that will always be agreed upon:

» » »

Superman is the strongest Iron Man is the coolest And Wolverine… is the most badass

It’s not hard to see why the grizzly anti-hero is so often singled out. Although technically best known as a member of the wider X-Men team, it would be fair to say that Wolverine (aka Logan) never played well with others. He has one of the richest backstories across either the DC or Marvel universe; he doesn’t give a damn what anybody thinks of him and his retractable claws are probably the coolest superpower ever. This appeal is mirrored in the character’s longevity: Wolverine has featured in every single movie of the franchise. Leading man throughout the original trilogy and gifted an unforgettable cameo in the 1970s’ set ‘First Class’, this will also be the second time that Logan has gone solo for a project after the 2009 release of ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’.

Pitched as the ‘darkest of the saga’, we should expect to see Wolverine at his most furious. Prepare for close quarters combat with multiple, highly trained opponents and grounded, bone-crunching engagements...

Going back to the canon that we all know and love, this movie picks up a number of years after events in ‘The Last Stand’. Having being forced to kill his love, Jean Grey, the heartbroken Wolverine has abandoned the X-Men. Wandering the Earth, he ponders his immortality, resigned to a fate: every person he ever loves will die before his eyes. Based loosely on the 1980s’ Chris Claremont and Frank Miller ‘Wolverine’ comic series, we find Logan in Japan. Dragged out of his haze to battle enemies both old and new, and caught between law enforcement and the Yakuza, Logan is tasked with protecting the daughter of a leading crime boss. After an unexpected attack leaves him vulnerable for the first time, Wolverine must survive an onslaught of highly trained assassins before confronting his new mutant enemy: the Silver Samurai. After the fanciful action of ‘Origins’, 20th Century Fox is keen to stress that this will be a very different animal. Pitched as the ‘darkest of the saga’, we should expect to see Wolverine

at his most furious. Prepare for close quarters combat with multiple, highly trained opponents and grounded, bone-crunching engagements, with the added danger that this time, with each passing battle, new wounds might not heal. The implications (and potential loss) of Logan’s immortality will be a central theme throughout ‘The Wolverine’. In this regard, Jackman is perfectly cast; a quick glance at publicity stills and set shots from ‘X-Men’ (2000) show that even at 43, he has hardly aged at all. He remains physically every bit the destructive figure (6’3’’ of well-toned muscle) and, although the bouffanted hair may be toned down a bit for this iteration, the impeccable sideburns remain. That’s not to undersell Jackman’s commitment to the role. Although widely known in real life to be the nicest guy in Hollywood, no one would know it by witnessing his Logan, constantly on the edge of explosion, masking genuine rage with disdainful barbs. Having been stung by fan criticism in the past, 20th Century Fox is taking a new approach when dealing with their Marvel universe by taking a leaf out of Marvel’s book. This will be the first chapter of their new vision of long-term franchise development and ambitious crossovers. A potential franchise mash-up with ‘The Fantastic Four’ is now on the cards, along with much deliberation as to how events here will tie into next year’s ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’. There has even been some speculation that there may one day be a crossover into ‘The Avengers’’ universe. Let the debates begin anew: could adamantium claws tear through Iron Man’s suit? n the post-apocalyptic wake of their rapturously received zombie romp, ‘Shaun of the Dead’, one of Britain’s finest comedy ensembles disbanded, jetted off to the Hollywood hills and situated themselves upon the sofa of the moviemaking elite with a cup of tea and a Cornetto. Simon Pegg found himself delivering top-secret intel to Tom Cruise in the ‘Mission Impossible’ franchise and beaming various megastars up in the role of ‘Star Trek’s’ Scotty. Director Edgar Wright began dating a silver screen starlet and writing/directing multimillion dollar screenplays and Nick Frost found himself battling the forces of evil alongside Kristen Stewart’s hugely successful ‘Snow White’. Fuzz’, but fortunately the boys are back in town - that town being Newton Haven, and they’ve brought some familiar faces with them. After never finishing their inaugural pub crawl from ‘The First Post’ to ‘The World’s End’, the childhood friends, including Pegg, Frost, Paddy Considine and Martin Freeman, reunite with the goal of finally reaching their alcohol-fuelled destination. Much like their real-life counterparts, not only have the group’s lives irreversibly changed but so has their sleepy hometown after being infiltrated by body snatching invaders from outer space, hell-bent on putting the kybosh on their plans for good. Careful pre-crawl planning can prepare you for many a situation: discovering you’re a man down; discovering you’ve been travelling in the wrong direction for the last hour; discovering you’re not actually in a pub but rather a spotlit car park with a warm can of lager. But ultimately, it can’t prepare you for five guys, twelve pubs, fifty pints and a highly explosive, brain-meltingly funny alien invasion that promises to give new meaning to ‘getting messy’.

THE WRIGHT STUFF With superhero season smashing its way into cinemas this summer - clinging on to ‘the Man of steel’s’ cape - edgar Wright will surely be taking notes. tasked by Marvel studios to kick off phase three of their cinematic universe, alongside writing partner and ‘attack the Block’ director Joe Cornish, the duo will unleash the lesser known yet wildly intriguing hero ‘antMan’ upon audiences in the wake of ‘the avengers 2’. Wright’s much-loved adaptation of ‘scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ proved that the director’s comic book sensibilities were perfectly attuned to the hopes of fans; expect no less from this hotly anticipated project.

In his first directorial appearance since his provocative 2010 political thriller ‘Green Zone’, English filmmaker Paul Greengrass announces his return with a dramatisation of the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking. Tom Hanks stars in the title role as Captain Richard Phillips, who was at the helm of the cargo ship MV Maersk Alabama when it was boarded by pirates off the coast of Somalia. The White House is under siege in this action thriller from ‘Independence Day’ director Roland Emmerich and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’s’ writer James Vanderbilt.
