OFFROAD RAGE

Max is back, and this time he’s not the only one who’s mad. Buckle up for a chaotic and exhilarating return to the deadly postapocalyptic wastelands. WORDS BRODY ROSSITER
RELEASED 15 MAY / Director George Miller / Starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult / Genre Action, Adventure, Thriller
P
icture the scene: thousands of miles of lifeless, inhospitable desert sits between you and any sign of civilisation, the world as we knew it buried beneath towering waves of dust and fire storms, and with the arrival of every stranger comes untold dangers - this is the world through which “Mad” Max Rockatansky must journey. It’s been thirty years since audiences last took a white-knuckle ride in the passenger seat of one of Max’s off-road rides, and while this new depiction of the Road Warrior might look a little different - English acting powerhouse, Tom Hardy, will don the torn-up leathers of the titular leading man - the madness undoubtedly remains. Only this time around, our hero might just be the sanest soul left standing upon the wasteland. Hardy’s representation of Max is a 21st century reimagining of the infamous survivalist, yet many of the character traits of Mel Gibson’s iconic tortured hero still remain. Haunted by the traumatic events of his mysterious past, Max has chosen to wander the desolate landscape alone. However, when he stumbles across a group of fleeing women led by renegade general Furiosa, he is swept up in an adrenalinecharged race to freedom, as the desperate collective try to escape the tyrannical rule of Immortan Joe, a ruthless warlord searching for a stolen treasure. For those uncertain whether Max can live up to his infamous pull-no-punches past and take-no-prisoners attitude, mastermind of the original trilogy of films, George Miller, has returned to the

Thunderdome. Introducing Aunty Entity (Tina Turner) and Master Blaster, it displayed a more fantastical tone as Max led a group of desert dwellers to freedom.
MAD MAX
MAD MAX 2 (1981) Revealing Max’s tragic past, this offered the Road Warrior a chance to win back his humanity by defending a community from a gang of roving raiders led by the depraved and violent man mountain, Lord Humungus. MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME (1985) Mel Gibson’s final outing as Max saw him robbed and forced to fight for survival inside the gladiatorial arena,
franchise to assume directorial duties and unleash post-apocalyptic hell upon cinemagoers hungry for crumpled bodies, gory battles, and heavy metal fireworks. Unlike many of the current reboots of successful franchises, Fury Road doesn’t lose its familiar flavour, thanks to Miller’s presence in both the writers’ room and behind the camera, thereby celebrating Max’s previous legendary exploits as opposed to wiping them clean. The legacy of the Road Warrior and his desperate battles against a dystopian world filled with crazed motorcyclists, vicious marauders, and egomaniacal gang leaders scar the hostile scenery, only this time Miller has managed to dial his cult brand of action up to eleven thanks to some breathtaking big-budget sets. Quite the return to form for a writer/director whose work since the original Max includes both Babe and Happy Feet. Hardy isn’t the only new face to be bloodied in Mad Max: Fury Road.
Academy Award-winning Charlize Theron (Monster, The Italian Job) has been enlisted to portray the relentlessly tough Imperator Furiosa – a character who is already believed to be the focus of the next Mad Max picture. The film also stars Nicholas Hoult (X Men: Days of Future Past) as Nux, a wild enemy who may well become one of Max’s most useful allies. Spending almost a quarter of a century in developmental limbo, Fury Road is one of cinema’s most eagerly awaited pictures. Fortunately, the symphony of revving engines and ferocious war cries that Miller and his team have composed alongside their operatic approach to action will hopefully reignite audiences’ passion for petroleum fuelled high-speed carnage on an epic scale. Maybe you’re familiar with the legendary, genre defining movies of Max’s past, and maybe you’re not, but one thing is for sure; the future most definitely belongs to the mad. May / June 2015 15

ONE IN A MINION RELEASE DATE 26 JUNE / Director Kyle Balda, Pierre Coffin / Starring Chris Renaud, Pierre Coffin, Michael Keaton / Genre Animation, Comedy, Family
T
hey’re everywhere. Despicable Me’s Minions have taken the world by storm. They’re a hit with moviegoers of every age, and the love for the little yellow rascals has surpassed the popularity of the two films themselves, but their days of stealing scenes as supporting characters are over as Gru’s loveable labourers moonlight in their very own adventure. The creators of Despicable Me take us back to a time before Gru,
with a prequel that reveals the origin story of the pint-sized henchmen. Throughout history, Minions have served the most vile masters, but every one of them has eventually succumbed to the Minions’ misadventures. Having killed off the T-Rex, Napoleon, and even Dracula, the Minions find themselves isolated in Antarctica without anyone to serve. With their species suffering a great depression, three heroic Minions - Stuart, Kevin, and Bob set out to find a new evil master and save Minionkind from extinction. With Despicable Me 3 two years away, a film dedicated to the franchise’s best asset is the perfect way to make that long wait feel slightly shorter.

LIFE FINDS A WAY
More than twenty years after Spielberg first loosed dino chaos on the island of Isla Nublar, Jurassic Park is open to the public once more. WORDS CHRIS WASEY
JURASSIC HISTORY JURASSIC PARK (1993) A select group of experts (Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum) are brought together to preview a new island attraction populated with dinosaurs. But a corporate saboteur disables the security systems and they must fight to survive. THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK (1997) Hunters scour a hidden island where dinosaurs have been living freely. They’re able to capture a T-Rex, but the freighter crashes and releases the Rex, who rampages across the city. JURASSIC PARK 3 (2001) An eccentric millionaire couple convince Alan Grant (Sam Neill) to return to the research island as a guide. Their boat is attacked, leaving them stranded with a predator even more powerful than a T-Rex.
JURASSIC WORLD RELEASE DATE 12 JUNE / Director Colin Trevorrow / Starring Chris Pratt, Judy Greer, Ty Simpkins / Genre Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
I
t’s hard to believe that it’s been more than two decades since the world first visited author Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park on the big screen. Anyone old enough to have seen the franchise’s first entry in cinemas will remember how groundbreaking Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster actually was. Now the series returns to wow a new generation. Set twenty-two years after the original, events from the entire trilogy are treated as canon. Masrani Global (do a search on the viral campaign) bought Hammond’s company and
continued his research, quickly reopening the park. But after huge initial success, the world grew indifferent to the spectacle of dinosaurs and the park began to lose money. In an effort to boost visitor numbers, scientists create a new dinosaur hybrid, the Indominus-Rex. Things go disastrously wrong. With 20,000 visitors trapped on the island, park security is overwhelmed by this highly intelligent and adaptable predator. Tantalising trailers tease glimpses of great white sharks being eaten as snacks, aerial attacks by pterodactyls, and a swarming charge by Chris Pratt’s trained velociraptors. This scale of dino interaction dwarfs anything we’ve seen before. Jurassic Park’s legacy is far from over. May / June 2015 17
