WE NEED YOU TO HOPE AGAIN

X-Men: Days Of future Past Release date 23 May / director Bryan Singer / starring Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Evan Peters / Genre Action, Adventure, Fantasy

X-Men: Days of Future Past serves as a direct sequel to X-Men: First Class, but also a culmination of fourteen years of filmmaking as it unites the narratives of the original trilogy and last year’s The Wolverine. The X-Men are getting The Avengers treatment, but looks set to surpass Marvel’s assemblage by offering an unrivalled ensemble of characters that has rarely, if ever, been seen in any superhero film before. Although plot details are scarce, the highly regarded comic book story from which it is based is set across two time periods and focuses on the mutants from the original trilogy joining forces with their younger selves to change the past to save their future. Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Patrick Stewart, Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Lawrence, Ellen Page and many more reprise their roles for a sequel bursting at the seams with Hollywood talent. With so little information available, it’s hard to know what to expect, but there is one thing a film with such an ambitious time-travelling narrative, a giant roster of superheroes and equal number of villains guarantees; action. 6 May / June 2014

But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Released 30 MaY / director Doug Liman / starring Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton / Genre Action, Sci-Fi

Released 2 MaY / director Paul W.S. Anderson / starring Kit Harington, Emily Browning, Kiefer Sutherland / Genre Action, Adventure, Drama

The action unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Set in 79 A.D., Pompeii tells the story of Milo, a slave turned invincible gladiator, who is sent to entertain the crowds at the doomed coastal city’s colosseum. Kit Harington, Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow, stars as Milo and soon attracts the attention of Emily Browning’s Cassia, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, and the fated lovers begin a secret romance. However, Cassia is unwillingly betrothed to a callous Roman Senator Corvus, the same soldier who murdered Milo’s family seventeen years earlier. As the conflict between Milos and Corvus erupts, so does the volcano and our hero’s quest to save his one true love in a race against time as a torrent of blazing lava rains down causing the once magnificent Pompeii to crumble around them. Released 2 May / director Camille Delamarre / starring Paul Walker, David Belle, RZA / Genre Action, Crime, Drama

Packed with great actors, some uproarious sequences, and a fastmoving, far-fletched plot, The Art of the Steal looks and feels like a crime thriller, but with a good dose of comedy to finish it off. Crunch Calhoun (Kurt Russell), a third rate motorcycle daredevil and semi-reformed art thief, agrees to get back into the con game and pull off one final lucrative art theft with his untrustworthy brother, Nicky (Matt Dillon). Reassembling the old team, Crunch comes up with a plan to steal a priceless historical book, but the successful heist leads to another far riskier plan devised by Nicky. They fail to realize each other’s separate agendas when their plan goes awry in this con comedy about honour, revenge and the bonds of brotherhood.

In a dystopian Detroit, abandoned brick mansions left from better times now house only the most dangerous criminals. Unable to control the crime, the police constructed a colossal containment wall around this area to protect the rest of the city. For undercover cop Damien Collier (Paul Walker) every day is a battle against corruption. For Lino (David Belle), every day is a fight to live an honest life. Their paths never should have crossed, but when drug kingpin, Tremaine (RZA) kidnaps Lino’s girlfriend, Damien reluctantly accepts the help of the fearless ex-convict, and together they must stop a sinister plot to devastate the entire city. With stylized action featuring thrilling Parkour stunts, Brick Mansions puts an entertaining twist on the action genre.

When a mysterious and beautiful woman rides into town, she helps him find his courage and they begin to fall in love. But when her husband, a notorious outlaw, arrives seeking revenge, the farmer must put his newfound courage to the test. ostman Pat has remained a key part of British culture since the early ‘80s, but has surprisingly never broken into the film industry. Now, 33 years after his small screen debut, the legendary postie finally receives the big screen treatment in Postman Pat: The Movie. Experienced Disney animator Mike Disa takes the helm to deliver an updated version of the classic BBC television series. Like the original stop-motion cartoon, the new 3D adventure follows the exploits of the eponymous hero and his faithful black and white cat Jess - but this is Postman Pat as we’ve never seen him before. The narrative follows Pat as he swaps postal delivery for reality TV and proves he’s

the complete package when he enters an X Factor-style talent show as a singer. After a successful audition in front of Simon Cowbell earns him national fame, our hero faces a moral dilemma, as he’s tempted away from his beloved hometown. In his absence, Greendale has been left at the mercy of the Patbot 3000s - robotic postmen that were deployed as Pat’s replacements - and Pat must return to stamp out their sinister plot for world domination. Stephen Mangan voices Pat and is joined by a host of British talent in this cinematic revival of the beloved animated character. David Tennant, Jim Broadbent and Rupert Grint offer support with Ronan Keating supplying Pat’s singing voice. It may look very different from the humble Postman Pat older audiences remember, but this refreshing character change pushes the envelope for some action-packed entertainment for the whole family.

since his first television appearance in 1981, Postman Pat has undergone quite the makeover and the character at the heart of the movie is very different from the one parents will remember from their childhood. in 2008, the BBC launched a new series that saw Pat promoted to Head of special delivery service. in addition to a dramatic switch to computer-generated animation came a new setting, a host of new characters and the development that Pat is now a licensed helicopter pilot. there may be many new features, but the charm of the original series remains intact. Postman Pat continues to focus on teaching children valuable lessons, only its updated style allows its values to resonate with young audiences and their families on a global scale.

Release date 23 May / director Bryan Singer / starring Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Evan Peters / Genre Action, Adventure, Fantasy

A

recent superhero movie made quite a splash with its team of four super-powered leads. There is little in the cinematic bag of tricks that can match the visual feast of supernatural forces and advanced technological powers clashing in battle. So, how would you feel about 10? Or 20? What about an army of super powered bad-asses? Many of the powers exhibited in X-Men are similar to their Avengers brethren: flight, super strength, bad attitudes. Except, where the world calls Captain America’s team ‘superheroes’, Professor Xavier’s band is simply ‘mutants’, reviled by the public and persecuted worldwide. And it is this point that forges our narrative. While past entries in the series have touched upon the notion of mutant rights, and how homo sapiens react to safeguard themselves from their evolutionary superiors, X-Men: Days of Future Past tackles it head on. Based on a comic book story arc first released in the 1980s, it sees mutants on the verge of extinction. Hunted around the globe by the X-Men’s greatest ever threat - the Sentinels: 20-foot robotic automatons, heavily armed and equipped with advanced sensors, designed with the sole intent of detecting and neutralising mutants. After (the commercially successful, but critically panned) X3, it had seemed as though the brand was dead, with an echoed death knell by way of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. While the world fairly assumed that 2011’s First Class was an outright reboot, wiping the slate clean (aka The Amazing Spiderman), 20th Century Fox saw an opportunity to unite the two strands. Days of Future Past takes place across two time frames. In the ‘70s, the First Class mutants attempt to prevent Bolivar Trask (played here by Game of Thrones actor, Peter Dinklage) from creating the first Sentinel. Passionate and arrogant, he believes his work is a force for good. Left with no other choice, Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), still walking the tightrope between good and evil, works with young Magneto (Michael Fassbender) to assassinate him. As their plans burst into fruition, they have no idea that this action will backfire and become the catalyst for an all out war between humans and mutants. In the 2020s, the original team exist in a very different reality. After 50 years of design improvements, Sentinels are virtually

indestructible. North America is completely under their control, while the rest of the world teeters on the brink. And although now united with old rivalries cast aside, mutants are a lost race. Professor X sees one chance to save them: change the past. Sending Wolverine’s future consciousness back to his younger body, Logan must unite bitter enemies Xavier and Magneto if there is to be any chance of preventing the apocalyptic timelines from manifesting. X:DoFP has sterling pedigree in terms of director, with Bryan Singer returning to the franchise after having helmed the much lauded X: Men and X2. And with Matthew Vaughn (First Class) staying on as producer, notoriously hard to please comic book fans are getting the best of both worlds. Teaser trailers have given us only the faintest glimpse at the spectacle on offer: a dystopian future plunged into blackness, a ragtag band of X-Men living on the run, and Sentinels prowling the skies amongst battlescarred skyscrapers. While the action will take centre stage, expect Singer (director of Valkyrie and The Usual Suspects) to deftly juggle the complex time travelling narrative and provide some breathing space for emotional encounters.

The worldly-wise Xavier of the future (Patrick Stewart) communicating with his broken, brash younger self (James McAvoy) is a rare treat Singer will hardly waste. The unique nature of this time bending leaves infinite opportunities for the franchise’s future. Rumours suggest that X:DoFP will close the original trilogy and be a final outing for the ‘classic’ cast, allowing them to formally pass the baton to the younger generation. Nothing less than absolute perfection will satisfy as a last hurrah for Wolverine, Storm and (Patrick Stewart’s) Professor X. A sequel has already been given a release date: 2015 will see the release of X Men: Apocalypse, set in the 1980s and touted as an outright follow up to First Class. No X-movie to date has broken $500 million. But, after The Dark Knight Rises and Avengers, comic book movies are entitled to set themselves very different benchmarks for success and X:DoFP looks set to be grander than either of these 2012 behemoths. Time travelling mutants fighting 20-foot liquid metal robots for the fate of two realities (not to mention franchises)… …expect our Apocalypse feature to be talking about a billion dollar target.

RETURN OF THE KING

16 May / June 2014

Godzilla is back. And he’s about to stomp all over a cinema screen near you. Brace yourselves for a monster hit as director Gareth Edwards and an all-star cast unleashes a darker, more terrifying take on the biggest beast of them all words Cheyenne Campbell

Release date 16 may / director Gareth Edwards / starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston / Genre Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

I

t’s no secret that reboots and their built-in fan-bases hold the top spot as a sure thing for film studio investment - ranging from superheroes to mutant turtles. It was therefore only a matter of time before a young, visionary director came along to try his hand at resurrecting the undisputed King of Monsters. Taking on Godzilla is an enormous task, not just in the scope of the beast himself, or the magnitude of city-ravaging and earth-shaking certain to take place. Godzilla is a legend that epitomises Japanese pop-culture around the world. The world’s most revered monster is reborn as Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures unleash the epic action adventure. From visionary new director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) comes a powerful story of human courage and reconciliation in the face of titanic forces of nature, when the aweinspiring Godzilla rises to restore balance as humanity stands defenseless. Inherent in the challenge of reinventing such an iconic property was putting at its helm a director who could offer a fresh perspective and keen cinematic aesthetic while remaining true to Godzilla’s integrity and legacy, all qualities which are clearly held by Edwards. Given the impression left by the last incarnation of the Toho creation - Roland Emmerich’s 1998 effort - Edwards seems eager to leave previous Americanised attempts in the shadows and return to a more authentic, grittier adaptation. While being respectful of the 28 Toho films starring the creaturefeature favourite, Edwards is also aiming to put a fresh stamp on the lizard’s illustrious screen presence. Andy Serkis and The Imaginarium were approached to consult on certain sequences and selected shots as part of the movie’s post production process. With Andy acting as consultant, The Imaginarium team used performance capture techniques, doing exploratory work on underpinning the emotional arcs of Godzilla. The Imaginarium were thrilled to be involved, and have enjoyed

contributing to Gareth Edward’s and Warner / Legendary’s epic rebirth of this iconic character. Speaking of characters, in a twist on previous Godzilla franchise instalments, Edwards has infused fresh life into the concept with a new set of creations not based on any existing Kaiju (Japanese for the larger-than-life monsters in the Toho films, including Godzilla himself). Muto, as they are being referred to, are a mutated race of Kaiju, malevolent creatures propelled by the interference of man and his short-sighted scientific meddling - and will, of course, only bite the hand that begat them. Fan forums and conventions have run rampant with the rumours of what form these Muto will take, and, with trailers and promotional materials skirting the issue neatly, the sparkly new additions to the franchise will be nearly as big a draw as the King himself. Pitting the King against these top-secret adversaries in a fight that threatens all of humanity compelled Edwards to improve Godzilla’s chances, doubling his size from the last version to rock the screen. Surpassing all previous interpretations, this Godzilla is determined to make his mark - at 350-foot-tall. IMAX 3D, it seems, was made for films such as this. Part of an engaging monster movie is being able to maintain the suspense and intrigue when the creatures in question are off-screen, and, with a cast including Aaron TaylorJohnson, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn and Sally Hawkins, this isn’t likely to be a problem. Joseph Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad fame) and Lt. Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Kick-Ass) play father and son in a plot that weaves in the fragility of family ties as the backdrop for the beasts that ravage the playground they make of humanity, rather than the other way around. With the story’s themes focusing on human courage versus the unstoppable wrath of nature’s forces - and the need for balance between them - Edwards describes his version of the King of Monsters as neither good nor evil, but instead, the anti-hero. And sweeping talents of the all-star cast aside, it’s a sure thing that this anti-hero is the real silver screen royalty. Long may he reign. © 2014 Warner Bros. Entertainment. All rights reserved.”

T

he Old West is one hell of a dangerous place to live. When sauntering through swinging saloon doors, navigating the barren desert expanses on horseback, even when relaxing on a plush parlour room pouffe - the barrel of a pistol is always one wrong move away; what better place to set a knee-slapping major motion picture filled with musical melodies and wicked laughter? From the mischievous mind that brought Family Guy to our new-fangled television boxes and a foulmouthed teddy named Ted to our picture shows comes A Million Ways to Die in the West: a rootin’ tootin’ comedy flick, filled with lone gunslingers, infamous outlaws, bad-ass broads and a liberal splattering of gory rib-tickling comedy. Director and leading man Seth MacFarlane stars as Albert, a cowardly sheep farmer, who, after losing his beloved girlfriend Louise (Amanda Seyfried) in an embarrassing duel,

a Million Ways to Die in the West

is shown his true cowboy potential by a mysterious woman (Charlize Theron). Unfortunately, Albert’s new sweetheart has an old flame, namely a Jesse James-esque outlaw, played by hard-hitting action hero Liam Neeson - and we all know he doesn’t react well to individuals being taken from him. Also starring How I Met Your Mother’s Neil Patrick Harris, the incomparable Sarah Silverman and Ted’s bearnapping villain Giovanni Ribisi, MacFarlane has assembled an ensemble of oneof-a-kind characters for his sunset showdown. There won’t be a tumbleweed in sight when MacFarlane and his posse ride through cinemas with all guns blazing this May.
