LIVE FOREVER Bond is back on the big screen as Daniel Craig takes his bow in his fifth and final turn as the famed secret agent. Sharp suits, fast cars, and a deadly villain await on the mission that will change everything. WORDS BRODY ROSSITER

Director Cary Joji Fukunaga / Starring Daniel Craig, Lashana Lynch, Rami Malek / Genre Action, Adventure, Thriller

espite relinquishing his license to kill and retiring to the sunny climes of Jamaica, James Bond’s newfound tranquillity is short-lived when a visit from his old friend, CIA agent Felix Leiter, pulls him back into active service. In desperate need of Bond’s specific skill set to help track down a kidnapped scientist and combat a deadly new weapon, Felix calls in one last favour. Skyfall and Spectre co-stars Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, and Ralph Fiennes reprise their roles alongside Daniel Craig. With Christoph Waltz’s Blofeld behind bars, it’s Oscar-winner Rami Malek who emerges as one of Bond’s most fearsome and complex

foes to date: the mysterious masked man, Safin. Bond will also have to contend with the return of Léa Seydoux’s Dr Madeleine Swann, whose reemergence may well have deadly consequences for him. The star-studded cast is bolstered by Blade Runner 2049’s Ana de Armas and British actor Lashana Lynch who bring a refreshing take on the classic “Bond girl” image. De Armas’ Paloma is a striking and mysterious CIA agent and Lynch’s Nomi is the formidable Double-O agent who took up Bond’s mantle following his retirement. Now

an old dog in the spy game, Bond must learn new tricks as two of the fiercest women he’s ever encountered join him on his most dangerous mission yet. Old flames, new adversaries, and an electrifying journey across beautiful yet perilous landscapes await. With director Cary Joji Fukunaga at the helm, No Time To Die brings the trademark style and action-packed substance that fans know and love but also promises to blur the lines between good and evil while delving deeper into the psyche of Craig’s tortured incarnation of the character.

IT’S GOOD TO BE BAD The mischievous Minions return to the big screen to take the seventies by storm in their sequel that reveals the despicable origins of their master Gru. WORDS AARON POTTER

fter bumbling their way from the prehistoric era to the swinging sixties in their first standalone movie, everyone’s favourite cheeky yellow bean-like beings are back to bring us more smiles with their seventies-set sequel. As teased at the end of their last adventure, their second outing will follow their early relationship with twelve-year-old Gru, decades before the events of the main Despicable Me trilogy. Experience the start of Gru’s obsession with being bad as

he attempts to join his idolised supervillain supergroup the Vicious 6. However, their nefarious leader – Taraji P. Henson’s Belle Bottom – has other plans. It’ll take returning Minions Kevin, Stuart, and Bob, plus hundreds of others working together, to help Gru with his mission to usurp the Vicious 6, and his new nemesis Belle Bottom. As before, it’s celebrity cameos galore with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, and Julie Andrews all voicing characters alongside the familiar, though slightly higher-pitched tones of franchise mainstay Steve Carell. Five years after the first Minions movie, prepare for yellow tops and denim dungarees to be back in fashion as Illumination Entertainment spread more Minion fever all over the world.

AWESOME ANIMATED SIDEKICKS Despite all of their shenanigans, Gru would be nothing without his Minions. Here are more companions from animated movies that we’d love to call friends.

DONKEY Eddie Murphy’s Donkey is a constant source of irritation to the peace-craving ogre, but also the only person Shrek could ever call a friend. We wouldn’t have him any other way.

BAYMAX Big Hero 6’s Baymax proved actions speak louder than words. Don’t be fooled by his cuddly appearance, this inflatable robot is no pushover and can certainly pack a punch when his friend is in need.

GENIE Robin Williams’ Genie was wild, bonkers, caring, and capable of making your wildest dreams come true… the best friend anyone could wish for.

Embarking on a wild cross-country road trip, a family disconnected by technology must work together if they’re going to save the world from the machine uprising. WORDS CHRIS WASEY Directors Mike Rianda, Jeff Rowe / Starring Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph / Genre Animation, Adventure, Sci-Fi

A

ccepted into her dream college, Katie Mitchell plans to move 1500 miles away from home and become a filmmaker. Terrified of losing their daughter forever, her parents insist on driving her across country themselves for some offline bonding time. With no screens to stare at, the family slowly begin to reconnect. But things change quickly as a “global technological singularity” occurs, causing electronic devices - from toasters and phones to cars

and personal robots - to rise up to overthrow the human race. Off-grid, but running out of time, the Mitchells must overcome their problems and work together if they’re to have any hope of saving the world. Bright, bold, and blending 3D animation with hand-drawn elements to create moments of blissful absurdity, Sony Animation Studios has the confidence to push the envelope and let Connected define its own unique style. Amid the fantastical visuals, Connected also asks real questions about the emotional challenges we face from allowing technology into family life, and the hastened disconnection from our adolescent children. It’s a story every parent will recognise… …except here the phones are literally trying to kill you as well!

y Sony Pictures Animation has quietl established itself as the studio for animation sleeper hits. Everything from Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs to collaborations with Aardman for Pirates: On An Adventure With Scientists. But 2019’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was where their true offbeat voice was found. A saturated, bombastic animation that leans into (and goes beyond) its comic book roots. After seven (yes, SEVEN) big-screen live-action to entries, many fans consider this be not only the best Spider-Man movie of all time - but also one of the best animations ever. Here, with added pizzazz from Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (also the directorial ’s geniuses behind The LEGO Movie inspired madness), Connected is the most unique animation you’ll see this year.

ince the dawn of time, the notion of new neighbours is met with as much curiosity as concern, and when The Croods meet The Bettermans, the world’s first family’s worst fears are realised: change is coming. Catching up with the cavemen we first met in 2013, The Croods 2: A New Age finds our heroes getting past their previous panic over anything that’s unfamiliar only to get a little too adventurous for their own good. But don’t worry if that all sounds a little too ominous; you can expect more stone-age silliness and prehistoric

s teased in the final moments of 2017’s Murder On The Orient Express, literature’s most famous moustachioed detective is returning to cinemas for a new adaptation of Death On The Nile. Marking the third onscreen interpretation of Agatha Christie’s classic murder mystery, this modern incarnation promises a steamy affair set on a riverboat and brings yet another star-studded cast of talent on board. Heading up the guest list is, of course, actor-director Kenneth Branagh, who this time welcomes Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot, Black Panther’s Letitia Wright, and comedian Russell Brand along for a twist-filled ride. The list goes on as Annette Bening, Tom Bateman, Armie Hammer, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Rose Leslie, and Sophie Okonedo round out another stellar ensemble. Together they make up the shadowy line-up of suspects Poirot must assess, analyse, and interrogate after a wealthy heiress is found dead. the Cheetah; a cat-like villain who’s not only tough enough to wrestle with Wonder Woman, but much more ferocious! But that’s not all - there’s also the small matter of her lost love Steve Trevor who has somehow returned. Wonder Woman became the highestgrossing female-led superhero movie of all-time, so fans will be thrilled to see director Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot reuniting for the hotly-anticipated sequel. Co-starring Pedro Pascal, Kristen Wiig, and Chris Pine, Wonder Woman 1984 promises to deliver all of the heart and charm from their first outing but on a much larger, and much more action-packed scale. While the main narrative remains in semi stasis, the DCEU standalone projects continue to enjoy critical and commercial success. Following the award-winning Joker and brilliantly bonkers Birds Of Prey, and plenty of excitement on the horizon, for the first time in a long time, perhaps it’s now DC that’s the superhero franchise to be most excited about.

After narrowly escaping their besieged home, the Abbott family are forced out into the terrifying world from which they fled in a bid to survive - but what new threats await them? WORDS BRODY ROSSITER

Director John Krasinski / Starring Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Cillian Murphy / Genre Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

A

Quiet Place became a boxoffice sensation thanks to its intriguing and thrilling take on the classic creature feature. Despite their tireless efforts to build a silent retreat in the country and keep their young family safe, Lee (John Krasinski), Evelyn (Emily Blunt), and their two children (Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe) were forced to confront the terrifying predators known as the Death Angels during the film’s finale. While this breathtaking battle revealed a weakness in the seemingly impenetrable armour of Earth’s new

apex predators, that vital information came at a devastating cost. With Lee gone and their oncepeaceful retreat in ruins, Evelyn and her children are forced to return to the world from which they fled. However, what awaits them offers little respite. This claustrophobic and nail-biting sequel journeys back to the first destructive days of the alien invasion, while also revealing the true toll upon those who managed to stay alive. Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou join the fight for survival as the ravaged communities living in the shadows are revealed. With danger lurking around every corner, it’s quickly revealed that the creatures aren’t the only threats that lay beyond the sand path.

CREATURE FEATURE!

Despite remaining mostly hidden throughout A Quiet Place, the constant threat of the alien creature s referred to as The Angels Of Dea th provided a chilling and intangible antagonist to the Abbott Family. How ever, following the revelation s of the first film, the sequel may wel l delve into their origins. Hyperse nsitive to sound, extremely fast, and coated in seemingly impenetrab le armour, the creatures managed to wipe out the majority of the hum an race in just three months. A Qui et Place: Part II depicts their arri val on Earth, and the instantly devasta ting impact they had. Director and cowriter John Krasinski has previously highlighted the creatures’ almost invuln erable nature. Can the Abbotts’ new kno wledge finally offer hope for the human race?

The timeless love story finds its way on to the big screen once again as one of cinema’s most decorated directors adapts one of its most beloved tales. WORDS BRODY ROSSITER Director Steven Spielberg / Starring Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose / Genre Drama, Musical, Romance

F

rom director Steven Spielberg comes West Side Story, a cinematic celebration and fresh adaptation of the sensational 1957 Broadway musical. Inspired by Shakespeare’s story of starcrossed lovers Romeo & Juliet, the story tells the tale of two teenagers, Tony and Maria, and their burgeoning romance amidst the streets of 1950s New York City. Unfortunately for the pair, they come from opposite sides of the streets, and gang allegiances stand between them and their newfound affections. As tensions

WEST SIDE STORY

grow between the warring Jets and Sharks, a violent end seems inevitable. Will young love be the casualty? Spielberg has reminisced on how West Side Story was one of the most impactful movies of his childhood so fans can rest assured that while his new take on the treasured classic will bring it up to date for a modern audience, it will also stay true to the original and the famed musical numbers will remain. With a talented mix of young actors, experienced stars, singers, and dancers harmonising with new arrangements of Leonard Bernstein’s original score from prolific composer David Newman, West Side Story is sure to have cinemagoers singing and dancing as it captures their hearts all over again.

Then & Now

Despite early word that Spielberg’s retelling sticks much more closely to the plot of the original stage musical, the cinematic legacy of the first filmic reimagining of the story undoubtedly still resonates with the director and audiences alike. The original film claimed ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress for Rita Moreno, who stunned audiences as Anita. Fans will be delighted to see Rita return both behind the camera as an executive producer, and onscreen in the role of Valentina; a reimagined take on the character of Tony’s corner store boss, Doc, who plays an integral part of the story.

fter more than thirty years of service, Maverick is back on the big screen where he belongs. For those worried about preserving the legacy of such a treasured original, everything we’ve seen so far suggests that not a whole lot has changed for Maverick. He’s still not as observant of the chain of command as his superiors would like, he’s just as skilled when it comes to unauthorised flybys, and he still spends his downtime playing volleyball. What has changed though, is those around him. While Val Kilmer’s Ice Man is set to return, Maverick’s love Charlie ▼ CLICK ME ▼

won’t be as Jennifer Connelly joins the stellar supporting cast as (the) Penny Benjamin - the local bar owner famous for a romantic run in with Maverick. Will they find a loving feeling? Also added to the mix is Miles Teller’s Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s late co-pilot Goose, who has just joined the new recruits at Maverick’s flight school. Hot-headed and brash, Rooster is much more of a Maverick than his mild-mannered father which makes his relationship with his new mentor all the more intriguing. With a new generation of pilots under his wing, Maverick lifts off on a death-defying mission that will see him confront his deepest fears and possibly bring him some sought-after closure as Top Gun returns to take our breath away once again.

WARRIOR PRINCESS Only one dragon remains in the fractured land of Kumandra. As an ancient evil awakens, powerful warrior Raya sets out to find the last dragon to save her world from destruction in Disney’s latest original animation. WORDS HARRY FAINT Directors Don Hall, Carlos López Estrada / Starring Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina / Genre Animation, Adventure, Fantasy

F

ive-hundred years ago, Kumandra was a beautiful world where humans and dragons lived together in harmony. Now, it’s in near ruin with its people divided and only one dragon left alive after the others sacrificed themselves to save the world from a tremendous evil. An evil force that has now returned. Humanity’s only hope for survival lies with the last dragon, but first it must be found.

BREAKING THE PRINCESS MOULD Over the past ten years, Disney has shaken up its pristine princess image by bringing some forward-thinking representations into the fold. Here are some standouts.

FROZEN

Disney ditched the damsel in distress cliché for their heartwarming animation as it was Anna who did the rescuing. Plus, it was Anna and Elsa’s sisterly love that saved the day, not true love’s kiss.

MOANA

Moana set sail on her heroic adventure to restore the Heart of Tefiti and save her island without a Prince Charming in sight.

VANELLOPE VON SCHWEETZ

Raya And The Last Dragon introduces the latest Disney princess, but Raya by no means fits the traditional mould and is much more interested in great swords than glass slippers. With great strength, sharp reflexes, and a true warrior’s spirit, she’s much more of a Mulan or Merida than a Snow White or Cinderella. Raya has trained all of her life to become guardian of the Dragon Gem and now, with the fate of her world at stake once more, it’s down to her - and her adorable armadillo sidekick Tuk Tuk - to venture across the land to find the legendary water dragon Sisu.

Wreck-It Ralph’s bestie is the foul-mouthed candy-covered racer in the video game Sugar Rush. No one was as surprised as her to find out she’s technically the princess of the kingdom.

From the creative minds of Crazy Rich Asians screenwriter Adele Lim and famed Vietnamese-American playwright Qui Nguyen - and featuring the voices of Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina - Disney’s latest original animation is an action-packed and visually-stunning slice of Southeast Asia that draws from many different cultures of the region to bring a whole new world of fantasy to the big screen. ▼ CLICK ME ▼

Making the leap from stage to screen, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a courageous and outrageous coming-of-age story that’s sure to get your toes tapping. WORDS AARON POTTER Director Jonathan Butterell / Starring Max Harwood, Lauren Patel, Richard E. Grant / Genre Drama, Musical

E

very so often, a stage musical comes along that so effectively steals the hearts of audiences that it’s almost destined to be seen on the big screen. That’s the case for the wildly-successful West End musical that tells the tale of sixteenyear-old Jamie’s attempt to conquer his critics and achieve his dream of becoming a professional drag queen. Newcomer Max Harwood stars as Jamie, whose journey to stardom is going to be tough. Thankfully, he’s got an ensemble cast of memorable characters to help him find his way including Lauren Patel as his best friend Pritti, Sarah Lancashire as his supportive mother, and even Richard

E. Grant who delivers a flamboyant turn as drag icon Loco Chanelle. After bringing the likes of Fiddler On The Roof, Into The Woods, and Giant to Broadway, the West End, and many more stages around the world, veteran stage director and choreographer Jonathan Butterell makes his directorial film debut with an adaptation of his own musical. Add in his experience as choreographer for the 2004 film musical Finding Neverland and you’ll be hard pressed to find anybody better placed to turn this vibrant and moving musical into the feel-good film of the year. The stage is set for this modernday Billy Elliot story to break out of London and onto the big screen.

HAIRSPRAY! Widely considered to be the film that propelled Zac Efron to Hollywood stardom following his High School Musical success, the 2007 version of Hairyspray! was a worldwide sensation due to its catchy soundtrack and poignant subject matter. An instant classic.

MAMMA MIA! Some may prefer 2018’s follow-up Here We Go Again, but it was the original Mamma Mia! movie that single-handedly popularised the jukebox musical. After shattering box-office records, the smash-hit became the bestselling DVD in UK history.

EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE ROCK OF AGES A star-studded celebrity cast including Tom Cruise and Catherine Zeta Jones brought the ultimate love letter to seventies and eighties glam rock. On the big screen and small it was nothin’ but a good time!

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE

The director of the successful Blade Runner sequel nobody thought possible returns with his most ambitious project yet, bringing the so-called unfilmable sci-fi novel Dune to the big screen. WORDS AARON POTTER Director Denis Villeneuve / Starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac / Genre Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

I

t’s the year 10191. Infinite life, higher-intellect thinking, and fasterthan-light travel are all possible thanks to a mind-altering mineral found on the desert planet Arrakis. Inevitably, such a sought-after spice has triggered a power struggle that threatens humanity’s very existence. A young man must step forth, harness his fear, and travel to the deadly planet to secure the future of his family. Based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, Dune is an expansive multi-part narrative set in a far future unlike anything audiences have seen before – and it’s all being brought to life through the lens of visionary

DUNE

filmmaker Denis Villeneuve. Extraordinary otherworldly visuals, action on an epic scale, and terrifying giant sand worms await, but perhaps the most impressive aspect of this adaptation is its cast. The director of Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 has amassed an astronomical all-star line-up that includes Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, and Rebecca Ferguson to name only a few. With cutting-edge visual effects, a jaw-dropping ensemble cast, and perhaps the only director capable of such a daring project at the helm, Dune is set to not only bring fans the adaptation they’ve been waiting so long to see, but also give every one of us an epic cinematic experience that can’t be missed.

FILMING THE UNFILMABLE Despite its cult status, David Lynch’s much-maligned 1984 take on the source material didn’t quite bring Herbert’s vision to life how book devotees had hoped, making Villeneuve’s adaptation all the more ambitious. Here are other directors who tackled tricky book to film adaptations.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS Turning Tolkien’s classic fairytales into three epic films was almost as ambitious as Frodo’s daring journey itself, but the result is one of cinema’s greatest trilogies.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Niels Arden Oplev’s original Swedish adaptation of the Millennium series is suitably gritty and bleak, and thanks to Noomi Rapace’s standout performance succeeds in bringing Lisbeth Salander to the screen.

ANNIHILATION Like Dune, Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation was thought to evoke images impossible to be presented onscreen. Luckily, Alex Garland’s expedition into a mysterious alien forest delights as much as it surprises.
