We last saw Dench portray Victoria in Mrs Brown in 1997, but here she returns as the strong-willed monarch later in life, in a captivating story of friendship and adversity based on the book by Shrabani Basu. It’s well known that Queen Victoria mourned the death of her husband for

40 years, making strong connections with certain confidants, but here we finally get a glimpse into a hidden period in her life. Abdul arrives in England for the Queen’s Jubilee, where he expects to assist with proceedings. What he could not have imagined was the start of an unlikely friendship with England’s Queen. Victoria’s long-standing fascination with culture and language prompts Abdul to share with her stories of his homeland, reinvigorating the Queen after the deaths of her husband and John Brown. As their companionship grows through Abdul’s letters and support, so do the objections of those closest to her, as tensions in the Royal Family and household flare as all eyes of Victoria’s subjects are on her.

ggsy and his fellow Kingsmen are back, and this time they’re not alone in their fight against the world’s most nefarious supervillains. Fresh from putting the sword to Samuel L. Jackson’s “Valentine” in their first cinematic soiree, the international intelligence agency find themselves once again thrust into a bombastic barrage of danger, action, and rather splendid suiting. Following the destruction of their UK headquarters, the Kingsmen head to the United States to

join forces with clandestine spy organisation, the Statesmen. Savile Row meets Stetson, Oxford lace-ups go toe-to-toe with cowboy boots, and the Queen’s English is replaced by a Southern drawl as the two organisations team up to take down a new and extremely formidable foe. But, in the immortal words of Harry Hart, “being a Kingsman is far more than the clothing they wear or the weapons they bear, it’s about being willing to sacrifice for the greater good.” The only way to assure good comes out on top is through a whole lot of badass action. Expect more ass-kicking, fast-talking, deadly gadgets, and gleefully gory exchanges in a jet-setting action-adventure filled with jaw-dropping set pieces and the finest comedic execution.

THE STATESMEN AGENT CHAMPAGNE JEFF BRIDGES The bourbon sippin’ leader of the Statesmen. Strong, brave and fearless, Champagne certainly has a few tricks up his sleeve, and his dandy hat certainly ain't just for fashion.

GINGER HALLE BERRY The resident Statesmen genius and Merlin’s only technological rival. Ginger may well be soft-spoken, but her actions in front of a computer speak volumes.

AGENT TEQUILA CHANNING TATUM Champagne’s second-in-command. Fond of toting a shotgun and not afraid to unleash the odd wisecrack, Tequila is a good ol’ Southern boy and an ex-rodeo clown who isn’t afraid of taking a wild ride.

Lego City: A popular Lego set that dates back as early as 2005, Lego City has its own video game and would be the perfect basis for a blockbustering big screen Cops ‘n’ Robbers movie. Lego Nexo Knights: Another wholly original property not too dissimilar to Ninjago, Lego Nexo Knights would give movie goers another blank slate, with medieval-inspired lands and characters to explore. Duplo: Teased at the very end of The Lego Movie, there’s every possibility we’ll get to see Duplo used as a plot device in the highly-anticipated sequel. Should we not, a Duplo solo movie would be ripe for preschool audiences.

YOU'LL FLOAT TOO In King’s seminal coming-of-age horror, seven children are terrorised by a shape-shifting demon which takes the form of a child-killing clown. WORDS CHRIS WASEY

RELEASE DATE 8 SEPTEMBER / Director Andrés Muschietti / Starring Bill Skarsgård, Finn Wolfhard, Jaeden Lieberher / Genre Drama, Horror

T

he word is coulrophobia, meaning “fear of clowns.” And this is where it will begin for each of you. Of all King’s dark creations, Pennywise is his most terrifying. A shape-shifting, ageless demon, he is a vision of pure evil, able to use each person’s worst fears against them. Amidst a thunderous storm, George Denbrough chases his newspaper boat down the street and watches it fall into a gutter. From the gutter’s depths, a clown pops his head up and offers the boat back... along with a red balloon. George reaches out his hand and the clown shows his true monstrous form and rips the boy’s arm off. Pennywise continues to hunt. A group of outcast children,

“The Losers Club,” investigates the disappearances and discover a pattern - a spate of children missing, every twenty years. They vow to fight the monster, but first they must conquer their own fears. Last brought to the screen in the terrifying 1990 miniseries adaptation, IT returns to bring coulrophobia to a modern audience. Planned as a duology, the Losers will return next year to face Pennywise again, next time as adults.

The King of Horror WORST THE LAWNMOWER MAN (1992) Legally disowned by King. A mentallychallenged lawn carer is transformed into a genius psychotic monster….through virtual reality!

MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE (1986) Directed by King. Machinery comes to life and destroys humans. 18-wheeler trucks, bread knives, hair dryers…the threats are endless!

BEST THE MIST (2007) This b-movie about small-town folk terrorised by horrors in the mist has one of the bravest film endings in history (even if King’s was quite different).

THE SHINING (1980) Kubrick’s simmering thriller is widely regarded as the greatest King adaptation. Despite Jack Nicholson’s legendary performance, King hated it. But he’s the only one…

CARRIE (1976, 2013) So good they adapted it twice! Puberty, a fundamentalist mother, and spiteful peers in a telekinetic classic, with added CGI gloss in 2013’s reboot.

WINTER IS COMING

FEATURE

When a winter killer strikes, detective Harry Hole goes on the hunt in a stylish Scandinavian chiller that promises to make your blood run cold. WORDS LEE CURTIS

RELEASE DATE 13 OCTOBER / Director Tomas Alfredson / Starring Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, J.K. Simmons / Genre Horror, Mystery, Thriller

S

ix years after spinning the entangling espionage yarn Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, elusive Swedish director Tomas Alfredson returns to chill us to the bone by bringing Jo Nesbø’s snowloving slasher to life. Based on the acclaimed Norwegian crime author’s novel, The Snowman begins with the discovery of a flurry of bodies all bearing the same chilling hallmark. Seemingly targeting women he disapproves of, the so-called “Snowman Killer” turns his victims into grisly snow sculptures and leaves them

alongside toying messages for the police. Stepping into the shoes of Nesbø’s recurring character Harry Hole, Michael Fassbender stars as the lead detective tasked with solving the Snowman’s clues and stopping the coldblooded killer’s spree as the mangled, snow-capped corpses pile up. Adapted for the screen by Drive’s Hossein Amini and Tinker Tailor’s Peter Straughan, The Snowman is a stylish thriller with a killer cast as Fassbender is joined by Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, J.K. Simmons, Val Kilmer, and Toby Jones. With the pedigree of talent involved, The Snowman is sure to deliver a scintillating crime mystery, but given Alfredson’s penchant for breaking rules, it’s also guaranteed to pack some unexpected twists into this well-loved genre.

While “Se7en meets The Silence of The Lambs” is a suitable description for The Snowman, we consider three more films that’ll set you up perfectly for the Scandinavian-noir thriller.

ZODIAC Like Se7en and The Snowman, David Fincher’s Zodiac focuses on a serial killer who advertises his crimes and will haunt you long after the credits roll.

HEADHUNTERS Adapted from a Jo Nesbø novel, this cat-and-mouse Norwegian crime thriller perfectly showcases the author’s taut writing and entertains with a relentless pace and intricately woven plot.

THE SNOWMAN

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN This gentle, poetic vampire film shows Alfredson’s ability to combine his own brand of visual flair with a unique spin on traditional genre tropes to deliver an unforgettable experience.

The story isn’t over. Return to the enigmatic dystopia of Blade Runner for a new chapter in one of cinema’s most beguiling sci-fi worlds. WORDS LEE CURTIS RELEASE DATE 6 OCTOBER / Director Denis Villeneuve / Starring Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Jared Leto / Genre Sci-Fi, Thriller

B

lade Runner is one of the most influential and equivocal sci-fi films of all-time. Under Ridley Scott’s meticulous direction, the genre-blending tech noir drips with atmosphere, intoxicates with its rich visuals, haunts with an ethereal score, and remains one of cinema’s most unique and richest sensory experiences. Fresh from directing Arrival arguably the most complete sci-fi film since Scott adapted Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

- Denis Villeneuve enters the rainsoaked, smog-choked dystopia for a much-anticipated sequel. Set thirty years after the original, Blade Runner 2049 follows LAPD Officer K on a journey to find missing blade runner Rick Deckard after he unearths a long-buried secret that could plunge the decaying world into chaos. Blade Runner 2049 boasts an incredible line-up of creative talent as the visionary director turns to wildly imaginative cinematographer Roger Deakins, note-perfect composers Jóhann Jóhannsson, Benjamin Wallfisch, and Hans Zimmer, and an ensemble of Hollywood’s leading stars to capture the tone of the original film. But this is no mere replicant.

BLADE RUNNER 2049

One of A Kind Though his earlier films drew critical acclaim, including a Best Foreign Language Film nomination for beguiling mystery Incendies, it wasn’t until 2013 when Denis Villeneuve exploded onto the scene with the gloriously intense Prisoners. Since then, he hasn’t looked back. Psychological thriller Enemy was quickly followed by Sicario, a whiteknuckle ride through the violent world of Mexican drug cartels. His most recent film, Arrival, is a heartbreaking, imaginatively told, and expertly constructed story of language, morality, grief, and time. With a near-perfect catalogue of films and exciting projects on his horizon - including Blade Runner 2049 and the famously unfilmable Dune - it’s only a matter of time before this visionary director joins the pantheon of all-time greats.

Villeneuve promises to leave his mark on the sci-fi world and deliver a sequel that, like its legendary predecessor, will not be lost in time.

UNITED THEY STAND DC’s fast-tracked cinematic universe comes to a head in a battle to fight injustice, whether its heroes are ready to or not. WORDS AARON POTTER RELEASE DATE 17 NOVEMBER / Directors Zack Snyder, Joss Whedon / Starring Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa / Genre Action, Sci-Fi

I

t’s fair to say that for Warner Bros. and DC Comics, the road to building its own superhero universe has been quite a rocky one. While 2013’s Man of Steel staved off the Superman Returns-naysayers, the gloom-and-doom seriousness of Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad simply didn’t connect with audiences critically, leaving a lot to be desired in terms of creating a world full of heroes we could rally behind. With self-confessed comic book nerd

JUSTICE LEAGUE

Joss Whedon recently taking over the directorial reigns, the responsibility now falls to Justice League to get this cinematic venture back on track and give fans an unlikely team that can kick ass in the effort to fight injustice. Bringing our heroes together is the oncoming threat of Steppenwolf, a Justice League villain from way back who very much looks set to be a more formidable foe this time round. Complete with otherworldly abilities and an army of Parademons at his disposal, Steppenwolf will have to face off against Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Flash, and Aquaman, but the Justice League will need to overcome their differences to succeed, however stacked the odds might be.

FEATURE

WONDER WOMAN The daughter of Zeus, armour-clad Amazonian princess Wonder Woman hails from the hidden island of Themyscira, symbolising strength and honesty.

CYBORG Half-man/half-machine Cyborg is a tortured DC hero who’s no stranger to teamwork. A valued member of the Teen Titans.

FLASH Infinitely fast and fun-loving, the Flash just might be the Justice League’s most powerful hero. He can turn back time, after all.

AQUAMAN Yes, he talks to fish and surfs in his spare time, but Aquaman will go to any length to protect his home city of Atlantis.
