6 million years ago an asteroid collided with Earth and wiped out all the dinosaurs. But, what if it didn’t? That’s the question Pixar poses in their eagerly awaited follow-up to Inside Out. That’s right—for the first time in its history, Pixar is releasing two films in the same year. This time the animation powerhouse transport us to an alternative reality where the meteor missed and dinosaurs and humans live side by side.

The Good Dinosaur follows Arlo, a young Apatosaurus who recently lost his father in a tragic accident. Weaker and more cowardly than the other dinosaurs, he’s always felt like an outcast and when he falls into a river and is swept far away from his home, he finds himself truly alone. That is until he meets a feral cave-boy who he names “Spot”. In true Pixar style, they form a solid friendship and band together to reunite Arlo with his family. Along their way, the odd pair encounter many obstacles and a variety of friendly—and not-so-friendly— characters, but all the while strengthening their bond to prove that friendship is one thing that runs through the ages. EVERY UNDERDOG HAS HIS DAY

SNOOPY AND CHARLIE BROWN: THE PEANUTS MOVIE

RELEASE DATE 21 DECEMBER / Director Steve Martino / Starring Noah Schnapp, Bill Melendez, Venus Schultheis / Genre Animation, Adventure, Comedy

T

he Peanuts gang is adored the world over for their range of imperfections, charm and flaws that have always struck a deep chord with readers. Now, based on Charles M. Schulz’s celebrated comic strip, The Peanuts Movie marks the big screen debut of the loveable misfit Charlie Brown, his heroic pooch, Snoopy, and their ragtag band of friends and foes. When a new girl (simply known as “the Little Red-Haired Girl”) catches Charlie’s eye in class, the bashful youngster decides it’s time to start dreaming big and somehow muster the courage to speak to his newfound love. Since his first appearance on a page in 1948, Charlie has found fame for his role as a long-suffering protagonist who, with the help of his loyal dog Snoopy, sister Sally, and friends Lucy and Linus (to name a few), manages to overcome the many pitfalls of growing up. Now Charlie faces perhaps his greatest challenge yet as he and Snoopy give new meaning to the perils of puppy love. Whether he’s skating on thin ice for a game of hockey, swinging for the fences at the local baseball mound, or learning to bust a few Macarena moves on the dance floor, this clumsy character has got his work cut out if he wants to win the affection of the town’s newest arrival. While Charlie struggles with issues of the heart, Snoopy has his own

problems. The beloved beagle is forced to take to the skies and pursue his winged arch-nemesis, the Red Baron. Snoopy’s unique adventure will soar above—and dangerously close to— many famous landmarks including a death-defying encounter with the Eiffel Tower. Snoopy has had countless highflying battles with the Baron since the latter flew onto pages in 1965, yet this jet-setting journey over Europe’s cities will undoubtedly prove to be their most epic dogfight. At one time, “Peanuts” was enjoyed every day by a global audience of over 335 million newspaper readers. Yet despite such amazing figures, the cast of unique characters have sadly failed to capture the hearts and minds of a 21st century audience. However, this state of the art animation escapade may well re-establish Charlie’s star status as he introduces his unique outlook on life to a whole new generation of cartoon lovers. Director Steve Martino (Ice Age: Continental Drift) has stated there’s a little bit of Charlie in us all, and despite him facing many embarrassing moments, it’s his heroism in overcoming those everyday disappointments that endears him to us. The creative minds and talented artists at Blue Sky, the animation studio behind Ice Age, Robots, and Rio, have striven to recapture the wonderfully distinctive 2D drawing style of Schulz and redefine it with modern 3D technologies. Full of spirit, energy, joy and the odd bit of sadness that will translate to global audiences both young and old—and not forgetting a spectacular soundtrack that includes tunes from Meghan Trainor and Flo Rida—The Peanuts Movie is packed full of nostalgic trips and innovative adventures. Celebrate the gang’s 65th anniversary by either reminding yourself of their many charms or discovering them for the first time. Snoopy may well be an old dog but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t got some new tricks.

WOODSTOCK

stock Snoopy’s fluttering sidekick Wood is never far from the doghouse. Whether he’s acting as a trusty his mechanic or chirping messages to an furry friend, the little yellow bird is invaluable member of the team.

A LADY IN WAITING RELEASE DATE 13 NOVEMBER / Director Nicholas Hytner / Starring Maggie Smith, Dominic Cooper, James Corden / Genre Biography, Drama

W

e Brits do love an eccentric. There is no nation more likely to applaud or embrace society’s oddballs, dreamers and outcasts than ours. And fortunately, the eponymous van lady is all three. Maggie Smith plays Miss Mary Shepherd, a charming (and slightly bananas) elderly woman who lives out of her battered camper. Well-educated, French speaking, but completely transient—and the community sees her vehicle as a public eyesore. That is, until Alan—driven by

compassion (and a measure of social awkwardness)—offers to let her stay on his driveway for a few weeks. She stays for fifteen years. Quirky, offbeat and heart-warming, the story sees the pair develop their unusual bond over the course of many years. Alan learns to see past the slightly rude, abrasive, and thankless exterior of his ‘tenant’, and comes to understand her loneliness and vagabond nobility. Based on Alan Bennett’s autobiographical book of the same name, The Lady in the Van had a successful life as a West End play. Maggie Smith played the same role during its first run fifteen years ago, while director Nicholas Hytner also returns for this stage-to-screen adaptation.

THE LADY IN THE VAN

TRANSIENT TRIVIA

• Based on a true story, Bennett wrote his book about his experiences with a woman he allowed to stay in his driveway for three weeks, but who then stayed for 15 years until her death in 1989. • Smith recently said that being the lady of the driveway was ‘much easier than being the lady with the hat on’ (referring to her role as Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey). • She despised the corsets and fancy dresses, much preferring the contemporary (albeit, slightly dirty) wardrobe of her cramped van. • During filming, the van had to be deep cleaned after it was invaded by ‘revellers’ during a weekend break from shooting. Maggie Smith wasn’t told until much later!

• Based on David Ebershoff’s 2000 award-winning novel. • Lili Elbe underwent four surgical procedures in Germany over two years from 1930. • This will be the fifth collaboration between Tom Hooper and cinematographer Danny Cohen after Longford, John Adams, The King’s Speech, and Les Misérables. • Tom Hooper won the Academy Award for best director in 2010 for The King’s Speech. • Tomas Alfredson (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape) were both attached to direct the project before Tom Hooper. • Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, and Marion Cotillard were all attached to the role of Gerda Wegener, which eventually was given to Alicia Vikander.

RELEASE DATE 1 JANUARY / Director Tom Hooper / Starring Eddie Redmayne, Amber Heard, Ben Whishaw / Genre Biography, Drama

E

ddie Redmayne caused a shock last year with his Academy Awardwinning portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, taking home the famous statue when many believed it would go to Michael Keaton for his role in Birdman. This year could make Redmayne the first actor since Tom Hanks in 1993/1994 to bag successive Best Actor wins, as The Danish Girl is certain to pick up its fill of nominations. It tells the true story of Einar

Wegener, who, after sitting in for a female model at the request of his artist wife Gerda, decides to pursue gender reassignment surgery to become Lili Elbe. Handled delicately by The King’s Speech and Les Misérables director Tom Hooper, The Danish Girl showcases the troubles and tribulations of Lili’s decision to become the first ever maleto-female surgery recipient. Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Man From U.N.C.L.E) plays Gerda Wegener, and Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone, The Drop) plays Hans Axgil, a childhood friend who forms part of a love triangle with the couple. The film’s soundtrack is scored by Alexandre Desplat, composer of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The King’s Speech, and 2014’s Godzilla.

SHOW ME A HERO

Forget everything you know about superheroes. Deadpool has arrived and this wise-cracking, gun-toting, rule-book-throwing anti-hero is rewriting the script. WORDS LOUISE HARROLD

DEADPOOL UNMASKED

THE ‘MERC WITH THE MOUTH’ Fast-talking and incessant wise-cracking earned him this nickname in the comics and his famous humour and pop culture references are arguably his most prominent attributes. BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL Became hugely popular due to his habit of breaking the fourth wall and acknowledging the reader directly; this characteristic plays a key part of a very self-referential film. MULTI-SKILLED One ability isn’t enough. Deadpool can regenerate from injury, perform incredible acrobatics, is proficient at martial arts, and wields every kind of weapon. GOOD OR BAD? Walking the line between hero and villain makes Deadpool impossible to predict and this ambiguity gives him free reign to do just about whatever he feels like.

DEADPOOL RELEASE DATE 4 FEBRUARY / Director Tim Miller / Starring Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller / Genre Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

S

uperhero movies are hot property and there’s nobody bigger than Marvel Comics. It’s almost impossible to imagine someone unfamiliar with Iron Man or Captain America. Even the smallest Marvel heroes are getting the big screen treatment these days. But there’s one comic book character, just as beloved, whose presence has been ignored for far too long, and he’s grown tired of waiting in the wings. Until now, Marvel has been all about the do-gooders, saving humanity from alien invasions,

guarding galaxies, and protecting the Earth from evil robotic overlords. Deadpool doesn’t play by those rules and Marvel have finally let him loose. Chaotic, irreverent, and bloody, Deadpool brings viewers far from the family-friendly fare they’ve come to expect. This is the origin story of how Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) transformed from a smart-mouthed, cancerstricken military dropout to an awesome mercenary antihero with accelerated healing powers. Armed with new abilities, a kickass alter ego, and a dark and twisted sense of humour, Deadpool isn’t the hero anybody deserves, but he might just be the unique antihero a saturated and almost stale superhero genre needs right about now. conferencing & events WTW Cinemas are available for a variety of private functions, including product launches, conferences, school project presentations and small business meetings. Our venues have the advantage of the most up-to-date audio and visual equipment, with technical staff on hand to ensure that your individual requirements can be met. In addition, the stadium seating allows everyone attending to get an excellent view of the stage and screen. In Newquay the large foyer is perfect for hosting welcome drinks and there is plenty of room for buffet lunches to be served. It is large enough for exhibition stands if required, meaning that we can work with you to make your event unique and meet the standards that you would expect. A range of welcome drinks and catering options can be provided (further details are available on request). Should a film be required this can be sourced, however cost may vary.

We have conferencing facilities available at the folloWing sites For further information please contact each cinema directly White river cinema St Austell PL25 5AZ 01726 66301
