Turbo dreams of being the greatest racer in the world, just like his hero, 5-time Indianapolis 500 champ, Guy Gagné. Release date 25 OctObeR / director David Frankel / starring Julie Walters, Simon Cowell, Colm Meaney / Genre Biography, Comedy, Music
In his first directorial appearance since his provocative 2010 political thriller Green Zone, English filmmaker Paul Greengrass announces his return with a dramatisation of the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking. Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks stars in the title role as Captain Richard Phillips, who was at the helm of the cargo ship MV Maersk Alabama when it was boarded by pirates off the coast of Somalia. Phillips’ exploits during the three days the pirates held him hostage landed him a book deal and it’s this autobiographical memoir, A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs and Dangerous Days at Sea, that provides the basis for this film.
From the director of The Devil Wears Prada and The Weinstein Company comes One Chance starring James Corden as Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts. This is a life-affirming, British film about a shy, small town Welsh boy who, with a flip of the coin, changed his life forever. The true story follows amateur opera singer and mobile-phone salesman Paul Potts, who was riddled by a streak of bad luck when, on a lark, he auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent in 2007. His on-air performances ended up bowling over audiences and judges, including Cowell. He went on to win the show and become a media and YouTube sensation.

ot on the jet-powered heels of Robert Downey Jr.’s electrifying outing as his limousine riding, high-tech armour flying, kiss-stealing billionaire alter ego Tony Stark in Iron Man 3, everyone’s favourite mythical Norse god has returned to take up the slack on the old avenging front - and rest assured he’s brought his hammer along for the ride.
Our heroes may well be gods, but ultimately the emotional and physical sacrifices they must face are distinctly human in nature - providing perhaps their greatest test yet.
As Marvel’s second film in phase two of their cinematic universe (phase one culminating with 2012’s inescapable ensemble adventure The Avengers), Thor: The Dark World finds itself battling amidst some stiff competition in the form of the forthcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the comic book world’s latest hot commodity The Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel’s habit of interweaving storylines and characters between blockbusters to bolster mega releases such as The Avengers has proved extremely fruitful - ensuring an entourage of beloved fan favourites can hold their own when it comes to all-star game time. Launching new representations of characters such as Hawkeye in Thor’s first Earth based encounter, and allowing plot events and consequences to endure from one film to another, has resulted in a rich and ambitious universe of heroes and villains that is currently unrivalled on the big screen. Thor: The Dark World looks to continue on the same action-packed path, hitting the ground running following the destructive events of The Avengers and promising a plot that will undoubtedly influence the events of phase two’s remaining features - including next year’s feverishly anticipated The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Bigger, blonder and possessing a vocabulary more eloquent than ever (it’s likely Thor doesn’t end sentences with LOL), Chris Hemsworth is back to drop the hammer upon any extraterrestrial creatures who dare threaten the land of Asgard or his adopted home of Earth - but this time he’s going to need some help to even the intergalactic odds. After orchestrating the near total annihilation of Manhattan and forcing The Avengers to assemble, Tom Hiddleston’s meddlesome Loki - Thor’s somewhat punier (as exhibited by The Hulk) but nevertheless ingenious adopted brother - has spent his days rotting and most likely plotting behind a set of impenetrable prison bars. Now that the cunning nemesis of Earth’s heroes has gotten the “mewling quim” monologues, big brother envy and daddy issues out of his system, his divine skill set in magic and mischief will most likely come in handy - fighting the forces of darkness’s fire with some equally roguish materials. Confronted by a deadly ancient race of dark elves led by the intimidatingly named super villain Malekith the Accursed, Thor must begrudgingly agree to overlook their sibling rivalry and release Loki from the depths of Asgard. Director Alan Taylor (renowned for his work on TV’s astounding Game of Thrones) has promised Loki will adopt a much more prominent role throughout the narrative than initially believed, uncovering not only the old wounds of battle, but the wounds of his and Thor’s fractured origins together. In the same manner as Game of Thrones, Taylor’s picture will take the concept of a fantastical fictional world and imbue it with the real-life issues and everyday dramas of friendship, family life and love - both romantic and brotherly. Our heroes may well be
gods, but ultimately the emotional and physical sacrifices they must face are distinctly human in nature - providing perhaps their greatest test yet. Billed as the ‘darkness’ that predates the universe itself (quite the accolade), Malekith and his army threaten to tear asunder the very fabric of time and reality itself, plunging Earth and the nine realms into an eternal black hole. The primeval overlord’s sinister motivation is that of revenge, but his sudden devastating appearance remains a mystery - the little that is understood of him and his followers ultimately proving his greatest strength. Fortunately, Thor will not carry the universe’s burden alone as numerous familiar characters return. Interplanetary love interest Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), Anthony Hopkins’ elder god Odin and Asgardian gatekeeper Heimdall (Idris Elba) will all eventually come face to face with the evil which masses beyond the gates of the realm. The God of Thunder’s second sole cinematic march into the perils of battle will undoubtedly set hearts beating, pulses racing and heartstrings playing a folk song fit for the lofty halls of Asgard. Many questions will be raised before the Avengers once again unite, but only one shall prove vital for Thor: can he truly trust Loki?
MORE FROM MARVEL before the next avengers flick and following thor and Cap’s deeply personal battles with the demons of their past, Guardians of the Galaxy will be unleashed upon cinemagoers. It is still unknown how this new rough and ready hero collective will alter the events of the avengers: age of Ultron but early signs suggest that writer/director James Gunn will provide the darker, harder-hitting franchise that many detractors have longed for from marvel studios. starring Chris Pratt as your sweet-talking hero star-lord, Zoe saldana as ‘the deadliest woman in the universe’ Gamora and doctor Who favourite Karen Gillan as the ruthless space pirate Nebula, the Guardians’ 2014 launch will most likely kick phase two into overdrive and provide the perfect prelude to the avengers summer spectacular.

he appeal of most young adultgeared franchises is obvious. Harry Potter: orphaned wizard who enters adulthood amidst a devastating magical war. Twilight: klutzy teen girl gets Edward Cullen. But The Hunger Games? Impoverished teenager battles others to the death, while yanking the heartstrings of two suitors behind her in an oppressive dystopian society? So what’s the appeal? Panem’s not exactly an escapist’s dream. There’s no butterbeer, let alone the relative safety of the Dursleys’ cupboard. It’s not the setting or the love triangle alone that demand attention, but an independent protagonist with all flaws on display. The girl whose self-reliance has been her strength, but whose greatest battle is now trusting others: Katniss Everdeen. When we last saw Katniss, she and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark had triumphed in the 74th Annual Hunger Games. In an unprecedented tie resulting in two surviving victors, Katniss’s gutsy determination beat the odds. Catching Fire picks up with the retribution President Snow lays down at the victors’ feet and delivers to all Panem citizens. Katniss has made enemies with her double-suicide attempt, and now she must pretend it was all for the love of Peeta. This, of course, throws a major wrench
Katniss grows as a character from independence to interdependence, whether she wants to or not. And it’s that reluctance that makes her even more human
into her relationship with closest friend Gale. The winning pair embark on a Victory Tour, initiating a rebellion that’s been lurking quietly underneath, with Katniss the unwilling figurehead. Unlike Bella Swan, who’s desperately in love with Edward from the word go, Katniss is unsure who she is, let alone who she wants. Survival and justice come first. And that’s why we love her. Undoubtedly, part of the attraction is thanks to Jennifer Lawrence’s widespread popularity, which has grown since the first film thanks to her Oscar-winning turn in Silver Linings Playbook. But Katniss’s strength and tenacity are magnetic. A product of her environment, she’s resilient, and protective of her loved ones at all costs. But she’s not a character easily labelled. This isn’t just another beautiful kick-ass heroine off the conveyor belt, impervious to pain and spewing endless snarky bon mots that make for great sound bites in adverts. She is self-possessed. Calculated. And sometimes, even a little cold. Her appeal lies in her humanity. The same goes for any character facing incredible odds in a world we don’t (yet) have to experience
first-hand, but can enjoy from the safety of our cinema seats. Except with Katniss, that humanity is pushed to the limits in a frightening society that ours - some say - could easily become. For any fantasy/sci-fi franchise to work, relatable, flawed protagonists are a no-brainer. Characters who make the story’s heart beat realistically. Frodo Baggins. Luke Skywalker. Harry, Ron and Hermione. If we see parts of ourselves in these characters, we’re drawn in. They can inhabit the most fantastical settings, tap into higher powers and use their smarts to wield jaw-dropping abilities - but, without the human element, they’d be cardboard to audiences. The first time around, Katniss volunteered as tribute in place of her sister, so her focus during the Games was survival - first for her, then for Peeta. This time, she lets down that fierce independence as she learns her every action can turn Snow’s hand back against the innocent people of Panem. It’s not just about her family and herself anymore. Now audiences will see her make choices - flawed or not - that affect all of Panem. And knowing her imperfections makes those decisions all the more gripping. Once the tour is over and she and Peeta are designated tributes for the Quarter Quell, she’s thrust back in the Games - but this time, cooperation is key. Katniss grows as a character from independence to interdependence, whether she wants to or not. And it’s that reluctance that makes her even more human. Despite the Capitol’s flashy finery, Panem is bleak. But perhaps the more grim the backdrop, the more visible one flawed person’s strength, reminding us a single spark can spread hope like wildfire - for Katniss, and for us. September / October 2013 17
Feature Prepare to be plunged into a world of debauchery, excess and misanthropy on an epic level. It can only mean another Irvine Welsh adaptation - and Filth promises to be a tougher, more twisted ride than Trainspotting Words Lee Curtis
DOWN AND DIRTY reLease date 4 OCtOber / director Jon S. Baird / starring James McAvoy, Jamie Bell, Imogen Poots / Genre Comedy, Crime, Drama
O
bscene. Bizarre. Insane. Three words that Scottish director Jon S. Baird has chosen to describe his adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s 1998 novel Filth, and, on the basis of its extravagant trailer, it’s hard to disagree. Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll are taken to a new level as Baird follows in the footsteps of his kinsman with an outrageous adaptation of Welsh’s novel, much like Danny Boyle achieved with Trainspotting. There are obvious similarities, with the raw Scots’ dialect, unflinching depiction of Edinburgh life and a Scottish adaptation of a Welsh novel. However, Baird denies the claims that his film is an unofficial sequel to Boyle’s landmark film, describing it instead as an entirely unique translation of Welsh’s insane storytelling style. Having spent the majority of his fledgling career as a producer, Baird is best known for his debut feature film Cass, which was similarly adapted from Cass Pennant’s autobiography. The gritty and complex exploration of football hooliganism not only proved Baird’s credentials with adaptations, but also highlighted the type of film he wants to make. Despite its reputation as the only hooligan film with a heart, Cass received a lukewarm reception on release, which was due to its plentiful failings: the unfortunate consequence of a small budget. Excitingly, Filth hints at Baird’s emergence from independent cinema and, with better financial backing (at least three times as
18 September / October 2013
much as Cass), he has a licence to showcase the true potential of his directing talents. A stronger cast also comes with a bigger budget. James McAvoy stars in the leading role as corrupt and intensely misanthropic policeman Bruce Robertson, who is charged with investigating a brutal murder case. Accomplished support comes from the likes of Jamie Bell, Jim Broadbent, Imogen Poots and Eddie Marsan in shockingly unfamiliar roles. Be prepared for a dark, disturbing and insanely entertaining ride as a host of British talent invites you to one of the most surreal cinematic experiences of the year - and one that just might leave you questioning your own sanity.
THE REAL MCAVOY Over recent years, James Mcavoy has risen from supporting roles on popular uK television series to global acclaim as one of the industry’s most exciting talents. 2013 is a pivotal year as the young scot follows his performances in Welcome to the Punch and trance with the role he was desperate to play: twisted copper bruce robertson in Filth, which many are already labelling his best performance to date. With a lead role in X-Men: days of Future Past due for release next year, this is certainly a bright period for the british actor as he continues to stretch himself with increasingly challenging projects and complex characters.
