Heading up the guest list is, of course, actor-director Kenneth Branagh, who this time welcomes Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot, Black Panther’s Letitia Wright, and comedian Russell Brand along for a twist-filled ride. The list goes on as Annette Bening, Tom Bateman, Armie Hammer, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Rose Leslie, and Sophie Okonedo round out another stellar ensemble. Together they make up the shadowy line-up of suspects Poirot must assess, analyse, and interrogate after a wealthy heiress is found dead. This modern version of Death On The Nile breathes new life into one of Agatha Christie’s most celebrated whodunnits, seamlessly merging practical sets and CGI effects to sweep audiences away to a period-accurate 1930s Cairo. Everyone is a suspect once more as Poirot quickly learns there’s no such thing as a holiday for the world’s greatest detective.

The Usual Suspec ts Bryan Singer’s neo-noir classic wowed critics upon release with its expert use of flashbacks and narration. The fin al reveal of Keyser Soze’s identity remains one of cinema’s most shocking twists.

iana Prince has chosen a simple, anonymous life. But fate soon throws the Amazonian into battle again as two of her longest-standing comic book nemeses come to the big screen. There’s business tycoon Maxwell Lord, whose dangerous search for magical relics to increase his self-help empire carries ominous consequences, and Barbara Minerva, a shy scientist

WONDER WOMAN 1984

who somehow transforms herself into the Cheetah; a cat-like villain who’s not only tough enough to wrestle with Wonder Woman, but much more ferocious! But that’s not all - there’s also the small matter of her lost love Steve Trevor who has somehow returned. Wonder Woman became the highestgrossing female-led superhero movie of all-time, so fans will be thrilled to see director Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot reuniting for the hotly-anticipated sequel. Co-starring Pedro Pascal, Kristen Wiig, and Chris Pine, Wonder Woman 1984 promises to deliver all of the heart and charm from their first outing but on a much larger, and much more action-packed scale. While the main narrative remains semi stasis, the DCEU standalone projects continue to enjoy critical and commercial success. Following the award-winning Joker and brilliantly bonkers Birds Of Prey, and plenty of excitement on the horizon, for the first time in a long time, perhaps it’s now DC that’s the superhero franchise to be most excited about.

The Infinity War is won. But as one MCU chapter closes, another begins as Black Widow brings Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff back to reveal secrets from a time long before she became an Avenger. WORDS CHARLIE JONES RELEASE DATE 28 OCTOBER / Director Cate Shortland / Starring Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour / Genre Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

T

en years ago, in Iron Man 2, is when we first met S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff; better known now as Black Widow having cemented herself as a regular fixture in the MCU. After supporting roles in seven films that saw her grow into a fan favourite before making the ultimate sacrifice to stop Thanos, she’s finally getting a film of her own. Bringing Scarlett Johansson back to the role she thought she’d left behind, Black Widow delves into the Infinity Saga timeline to reveal what happened in the time between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.

BLACK WIDOW

An origin story of sorts sends Black Widow back to where it all began. Budapest, and the Red Room where young women are brainwashed into becoming the world’s most elite assassins. There she must face longburied memories and go toe to toe with Taskmaster, a masked villain whose photographic reflexes can replicate the abilities and fighting style of any opponent. As Black Widow’s dark past comes to light, so does a chance to reunite with her first family of heroes. Florence Pugh co-stars as Natasha’s would-be sister Yelena with Rachel Weisz and David Harbour as their “parents” Melina and Red Guardian respectively. The family of misfits must fight together again to take down Taskmaster in the epic entry to Phase Four of the MCU.

SUPER WOMEN CAPTAIN MARVEL

Brie Larson became the MCU’s first female lead when she donned Carol Danvers’ blue and red jumpsuit in the thrilling penultimate chapter of the Infinity Saga. Expect the sequel in 2022.

WONDER WOMAN

Two years earlier, Gal Gadot became the first woman to front a film in the DCEU after she followed her successful debut in Batman V Superman with her epic origin story. Her sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, arrives this October.

BIRDS OF PREY

The breakout star from DC’s Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn got her own solo spinoff earlier this year. She’ll be back again in the Suicide Squad reboot next year.

condition. As Joe enlightens 22 on the unmissable experiences that lay ahead, he also begins to rediscover his own passion for life. Though not directly linked to Inside Out, Soul is every bit a spiritual successor to the much-loved Pixar picture. The two-time Academy Awardwinning director of Up and Inside Out, Pete Docter, returns with a star-studded voice cast including Jamie Foxx, Zendaya, and Tina Fey in tow. Disney Pixar’s latest melodic adventure promises to take cinemagoers on a poetic and visually-striking journey of self-discovery. The many setbacks and challenges of 2020 may well have delayed Soul’s arrival in cinemas, but now it’s time to get set for an existential animated experience that reaffirms the many reasons why life is so precious.

MITCHELLS VS MACHINES

Embarking on a wild cross-country road trip, a family disconnected by technology must work together if they’re going to save the world from the machine uprising. WORDS CHRIS WASEY RELEASE DATE TBC 2020 / Directors Mike Rianda, Jeff Rowe / Starring Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph / Genre Animation, Adventure, Sci-Fi

A

ccepted into her dream college, Katie Mitchell plans to move 1500 miles away from home and become a filmmaker. Terrified of losing their daughter forever, her parents insist on driving her across country themselves for some offline bonding time. With no screens to stare at, the family slowly begin to reconnect. But things change quickly as a “global technological singularity” occurs, causing electronic devices - from toasters and phones to cars

and personal robots - to rise up to overthrow the human race. Off-grid, but running out of time, the Mitchells must overcome their problems and work together if they’re to have any hope of saving the world. Bright, bold, and blending 3D animation with hand-drawn elements to create moments of blissful absurdity, Sony Animation Studios has the confidence to push the envelope and let Connected define its own unique style. Amid the fantastical visuals, Connected also asks real questions about the emotional challenges we face from allowing technology into family life, and the hastened disconnection from our adolescent children. It’s a story every parent will recognise… …except here the phones are literally trying to kill you as well!

GOOD CONNECTIONS y Sony Pictures Animation has quietl established itself as the studio for animation sleeper hits. Everything from Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs to collaborations with Aardman for Pirates: On An Adventure With Scientists. But 2019’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was where their true offbeat voice was found. A saturated, bombastic animation that leans into (and goes beyond) its comic book roots. After seven (yes, SEVEN) big-screen live-action to entries, many fans consider this be not only the best Spider-Man movie of all time - but also one of the best animations ever. Here, with added pizzazz from Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (also the directorial ’s geniuses behind The LEGO Movie inspired madness), Connected is the most unique animation you’ll see this year.
