MOVING MILLENNIALS

The Manifesto

THEY SAY WE’RE entitled, whiny, selfish and lazy. They’ve described us as being “highly educated, and confused.” We’ve been labeled “Generation Me,” “Trophy Kids,” and “The Peter Pan Generation.”

We continue to hear and even see evidence that unemployment is on the rise for our demographic, and there are charts that suggest we won’t retire until our mid-seventies.

The reality is that for millions of people that we grew up with, these descriptors, labels and predictions are 100% valid. In fact, as generalizations for our generation, we don’t dispute any of these ideas and beliefs. We do, however, choose not to associate ourselves with any of them.

We are Moving Millennials. We’re among the mere thousands of Gen Y humans who have made the decision to do things a little bit differently.

While in large part we have willingly followed the traditional paths set out by our parents and older siblings, we are now choosing to pause; to take a step to the left or right; even back-track slightly; all in an effort to ensure that our ultimate path is one we are absolutely in love with.

This healthy hesitation has caused us to see brand new possibilities. Destinations that were previously hidden, and shiny new methods of transportation that we never knew existed. This moment for reflection has allowed our true values to surface, thus completely reshaping our life’s vision.

Previously, it was our aim to find a good job (or two) that hopefully, one day, would evolve into a great career. Our new vision for life is bigger. Way bigger. Now, our primary focus is legacy.

As Moving Millennials, not only is our focus different, but the terms under which we choose to work are somewhat radical, especially juxtaposed with those of millions of our peers, and billions who have gone before us.

We choose to work on passion projects that not only fuel our lives, feed our families, and support our dreams, but also outlive the time we’re able to invest in them.

We don’t believe in a 40-hour work week, although some weeks we choose to work 70 hours, or more.

The term “Vacation Time” isn’t in our vocabulary, although we schedule it regularly.

We’ve deleted the idea of "retirement" from our brains completely. However, we take frequent breaks, sabbaticals, and plan for “rest time” on a weekly basis.

We are never "busy," but more often than not we’re juggling a few different projects and businesses.

We are rarely "stressed out," but we’re often uncomfortable and nervous, and we move past fear on a regular basis.

While some of us may still have a good salary, benefits, and a pension, we don’t spend much time thinking (or complaining) about them, since long-term, we’re choosing complete financial independence over relying on anyone else for perceived security.

Rather than earning a living, we are creating a life; a life not based on traditional expectations, accomplishments or cliché concepts of “success”, but rather a life that is completely in alignment with our true calling, our genius, our most cherished dreams, and our greatest passions.

Constant contribution is our responsibility. Simply put, we earn more so that we can give more, and give more, in order to earn more.

We consciously align ourselves with causes and organizations that fully align with our values so that we’re continuously expanding our impact, and strengthening our legacy.

Finally, we choose to operate from a place of holistic freedom. It’s when we experience physical freedom, financial freedom, time freedom, spiritual freedom, freedom in our relationships, and freedom to pursue our genius, that we’re most effective and have the greatest impact in the world. It’s when we’re able to do what truly moves us, that we move the most people. For us, this defines “success:”

travel more. give more. live more.
