Most people do not read policy papers or economics textbooks, but they do watch film, television, and Internet videos. The Moving Picture Institute identifies and trains talented filmmakers, who use storytelling to wrap pro-freedom policy ideas in entertaining packages that audiences can’t wait to watch.

MPI FILMMAKERS' PATHS TO SUCCESS Once MPI filmmakers break into show business, they create a ripple effect of influence. But Hollywood success takes time, talent, and a reliable network. That’s why MPI offers an unparalleled collection of career-advancing programs, including:

È

HOLLYWOOD CAREER LAUNCH PROGRAM MPI places college students and recent graduates in paid internships in Hollywood production companies and on MPI’s film sets.

È

È

RISING FILMMAKERS PROGRAM MPI staff works closely with emerging freedom-oriented filmmakers to achieve maximum impact for their work and measurable professional milestones.

Spotlight on MPI Screenwriting Workshop successes:

Each week young Americans spend a staggering 30+ hours consuming television and online videos. Because they are spending more and more time in front of a screen, that’s where we must reach them. But filmmakers cannot reach audiences without great stories. Truly captivating content begins with excellent screenplays. MPI Screenwriting Workshops give pro-freedom screenwriters an opportunity to attend weekly virtual workshop sessions, complete weekly assignments, and share their work with the other participants. MPI executive vice presidents Maurice Black, PhD, and Erin O’Connor, PhD, use their combined decades of teaching and storytelling experience to run the workshops.

I just wanted to thank you again for your fantastic feedback. I’ve been really amazed with your insight

Countless polls tell us that millennials feel disappointed by government. Even so, they tend to think that increased government regulation will solve their problems. Seventy-five million strong, these same young voters will be decisive in the 2016 election and beyond. That’s why our new YouTube channel, We the Internet, uses humorous sketches and pointed satire to offer a fresh, funny, freedom-oriented take on current events, policy, and the election issues that matter most to this vital demographic.

MPI MAKES ECONOMICS ENTERTAINING. Millennials have enormous potential to shape the 2016 election and beyond. But these young voters desperately need economics education to understand candidates’ positions and policies. The Moving Picture Institute reaches this generation by using comedy and popular films in the online YouTube series EconPop. EconPop is not just an example of innovative “edutainment.” It is an example of the Moving Picture Institute’s talent development programs at work. EconPop was made in partnership with Emergent Order — a free-market production company founded by MPI-supported filmmaker and Creative Council member John Papola. Andrew Heaton, an MPI-supported comedian, wrote and hosted the series. MPI staff gave editorial support on scripts and concepts, while also providing marketing and promotional assistance.

Moving Picture Institute projects are finding their way into classrooms, where they bring a new perspective on economics to students across the nation. Building on the legacy of MPI projects like YouTube series EconPop and short film 2081, FI$H: How an Economy Grows uses vibrant animation and clever storytelling to bring economic principles to life. Focused on three characters who are stranded on a desert island, FI$H allows viewers to watch economic development in action.

21

Adapted from Peter and Andrew Schiff ’s bestselling book, How an Economy Grows and Why it Crashes, the ten-part series provides educators with supplemental videos featuring prominent Duquesne University economics professor Antony Davies, as well as teacher-designed lesson plans that meet state educational standards. Because FI$H will stream online, the series will be easy for students, teachers, and parents to access at home or in the classroom at any time of day. All they will need is a computer, phone, or tablet with an Internet connection.

PARTNERSHIP: LIBERTY FUND In April, the nonprofit Liberty Fund teamed up with MPI for an intimate seminar titled “Scripting Liberty: Story, Economics, and Television Drama.” Established filmmakers and entertainment industry players from around the world gathered in Los Angeles, California, to discuss what makes popular television dramas so successful. MPI staff designed and directed the seminar, which gave participants a platform to discuss how pro-freedom filmmakers could best share their ideas through film.

In 2005, the Moving Picture Institute had one employee, a minuscule budget, and a powerful vision: To promote freedom through film. Ten years later, MPI films and filmmakers have shaped critical policy debates, won prestigious awards, drawn ample press coverage, and reached vast audiences through iTunes, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube, television programming, theatrical screenings, and more.

IN OUR FIRST DECADE, MPI AND MPI FILMMAKERS HAVE: È

TEN YEARS

28

MPI HAS BIG PLANS FOR THE FUTURE. In its first decade the Moving Picture Institute has had a profound effect on politics and culture. But perhaps most importantly, our first ten years have laid the groundwork for what we will achieve in the next ten.

In 2016 and beyond, MPI will:

Next year MPI will reach the game-changing millennial generation with more pro-freedom content through MPI’s original We the Internet channel. By posting at least twice a week, every week, our videos will use satire to emphasize the power of the individual and the importance of civil liberties in the face of expanding state control. We the Internet will also give more young, pro-freedom comedians the opportunity to create scripts and videos for our channel. For more on We the Internet, see pages 14-17.

SCREEN BEFORE MORE STUDENTS THAN EVER BEFORE MPI films such as 2081 have become essential classroom tools in thousands of classrooms across the nation. By expanding our educational marketing staff and resources, we will ensure that MPI original content, including economics series FI$H: How an Economy Grows, reaches the largest student audience possible. The entire series will be available to stream online for free, ensuring that teachers have easy access to the series’ videos, lesson plans, and supplemental videos. For more on FI$H, see pages 20-21.

The Moving Picture Institute has carefully studied the work of Participant Media, which famously released An Inconvenient Truth and other films that change popular opinion. When An Inconvenient Truth premiered, only 30 percent of Americans said they believed in global warming. Eight months later, 87 percent said global warming was “an issue of concern.” Participant routinely uses social action campaigns alongside their movies to advance policy objectives. For example, An Inconvenient Truth directs viewers to an activist website, where audiences sign petitions to screen the film in classrooms. Next year alone, MPI will use the Participant model to launch three promising documentaries in partnership with MPI filmmakers. The films will give a pro-freedom perspective on entrepreneurship, criminal justice, and failing public institutions. Not only will MPI ensure these films are seen by relevant state and national legislatures, our team will give everyday people the tools to make pro-freedom changes in their own lives. Through Participant-style social action campaigns, MPI will give audiences the opportunity to take pro-freedom action such as sharing information with their loved ones and hosting their own screenings. For more on these films and filmmakers, see pages 10-11.

FUTURE

CREATE MORE ORIGINAL, CULTURECHANGING ENTERTAINMENT THAN EVER BEFORE With a decade of experience and dozens of outstanding filmmakers in our network, the time has come for MPI to create more movies and videos inhouse. The MPI Creative team is already developing pro-freedom concepts, which MPI will bring to life through screenplays and production in the coming years. This creative control will give us the ability to address policies that pro-freedom people must urgently address to preserve human rights and our free society. One of these forthcoming films will tell the inspiring true story of education reform advocate Virginia Walden Ford. Our vision for the future is ambitious, but with the continued and generous support of those who agree with our mission to promote freedom through film, it is within our reach. Thank you for your interest in our work. We look forward to sharing our second decade’s progress with you.
