MISSION

Moving Picture Institute Annual Report 2014

FOUNDED IN 2005, THE MOVING PICTURE INSTITUTE (MPI) IS A 501(C)(3) NONPROFIT THAT PROMOTES FREEDOM THROUGH FILM, COMEDY, AND ONLINE VIDEOS. We advance this goal in two unique and effective ways:

1. We produce original films and videos about individual rights, limited government, and free markets. 2. We identify and nurture promising freedomoriented filmmakers at every stage of their careers.

MISSION 01 Have you ever seen a movie that changed your life? A movie that changed the way you see yourself and the world around you? That didn’t happen by accident. Talented storytellers know how to captivate their audiences with dramatic conflict, inspiring characters, and original storylines. At the Moving Picture Institute, great stories are our business. Our films move viewers emotionally, so that they will be moved to take action, and ultimately to change society. With an active presence in both the policy and entertainment worlds, MPI motivates audiences to care deeply about human freedom. Our films and filmmakers inspire those who already care about preserving a free society, including policymakers and think tanks. But we also reach beyond the choir, affecting students, educators, and creative influencers who might not otherwise learn about individual rights, resisting tyranny, and other important ideals. Our films have sparked debates among pundits and spurred action among lawmakers at the local, state, and federal levels. Today, MPI’s work is more important than ever. Just look at America’s elected politicians, corrupted institutions, and unelected bureaucrats. This year, they continued to infringe upon Americans’ civil liberties, from increased police militarization and brutality to questionable security tactics. For example, MIT

economics professor Jonathan Gruber mocked the “stupidity of the American voter” for failing to see through deceptive points of the health care law that he helped create — uniting people on both sides of the political aisle in disgust. In this fast-paced world, it is difficult to catch, and keep, someone’s attention. But our strategy is effective. Research by Participant Media and other groups shows that issuebased films and media content can shift public opinion significantly. Cutting-edge research in neuroscience confirms that stories are key to making people receptive to new ideas. IDEAS ARE ONLY AS GOOD AS THEIR PACKAGES. The Moving Picture Institute was founded on the belief that stories can change the world. But it’s more than a belief.

It’s science.

“The narrative theorist Marshall McLuhan famously wrote in the 1960s that ‘the medium is the message,’ and we’ve found this is true neurologically.” — Dr. Paul Zak, Director, Center for Neuroeconomics Studies at Claremont Graduate University

Scientists have used fMRI scans to show that stories actually change the oxytocin hormone levels in our brains, making listeners more empathetic and willing to build relationships. This provides scientific proof that stories both capture and hold our attention and “transport” people into the characters’ world.

“Experiments show that character-driven stories with emotional content result in a better understanding of the key points a speaker wishes to make and enable better recall of these points weeks later.”

It’s observable. The 2013 documentary Blackfish highlighted the alleged mistreatment of SeaWorld’s orcas. The film sparked a wave of activism, media coverage, and park boycotts. In 2014, SeaWorld’s shares dropped more than 40% and their CEO stepped down. Morgan Spurlock’s film Super Size Me ignited criticism of fast-food chain McDonald’s. This backlash encouraged the chain to add healthy items to their menu and phase out “supersize” options. In 2014, Participant Media (An Inconvenient Truth, Waiting for Superman, Food Inc., The Help) released a massive study finding a positive link between the emotional impact of films and audiences’ postscreening actions. Those actions include sharing information on the film’s topic with others, learning more about the policy issues behind the film, engaging in community and political actions, and more.

As one study explains, empathy can cause us to “look inside ourselves and make changes to become better people.” It’s something that raw data, facts, and figures cannot achieve alone.

It’s time. Millennials (aged 18 to 29) are an important and active demographic who are open to the ideas of freedom, but are rarely exposed to them. Millennials do not spend their time reading policy papers, but they watch an estimated 35 hours of film, television, and Internet videos every week.

MPI films and filmmakers bridge that gap, translating policy ideas into entertainment. We also know that audiences are ready for this kind of content. Just look at the success of profreedom films such as Dallas Buyers Club and Captain America.

WITH COMEDY AND CONCRETE EXAMPLES IN POPULAR FILMS. That’s the premise behind EconPop, the world’s first economics-themed pop culture review show. Starring MPI comedian Andrew Heaton, the show reaches a diverse and engaged audience. It has earned praise from both business media outlets and popular entertainment websites, including Forbes and USA Today. To make EconPop, MPI partnered with Emergent Order — a free-market production company founded by MPI fellow and creative

council member John Papola. Papola is best known for his popular Hayek v. Keynes rap videos and his cartoon web series about crony capitalism, The Kronies. MPI staff gave script and concept support, as well as marketing and promotional assistance. A new episode of EconPop premieres monthly on Econstories.tv and YouTube. Each episode is accompanied by a free 30-minute iTunes podcast that features Heaton, economist Steven Horwitz, and literature professor Paul Cantor.

MPI program officer Naomi Brockwell is a talented filmmaker with a passion for technologies that are making our world more prosperous and free. Her area of expertise is Bitcoin, a digital currency that is changing and decentralizing money at home and abroad. That’s why she and other MPI staffers created the Bitcoin Girl video, an MPI original music video parody of Billy Joel’s pop song “Uptown Girl.”

MONETARY POLICY IS COMPLICATED AND EASY TO IGNORE. BUT THIS VIDEO REACHED NEW AUDIENCES, INCLUDING MILLENNIALS. Bitcoin Girl earned tens of thousands of views the first day it was online and media coverage in over a dozen outlets.

MPI SUPPORTS HIGHQUALITY, THOUGHTPROVOKING FILMS THAT REACH WIDE AUDIENCES. THE MOVING PICTURE INSTITUTE’S STRATEGY IS SUCCESSFUL BECAUSE OUR FILMS EARN RESPECT IN BOTH THE POLICY WORLD AND HOLLYWOOD. In 2014 MPI’s greatest entertainment industry success was The Immortalists, a breathtaking MPI-supported documentary about two eccentric scientists who are trying to crack the code of immortality. MPI was the first major supporter of this film, which is influencing the national debate about life or death issues and propelling the filmmakers’ careers. By MPI fellows David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg, the film explores philosophical questions about how vastly increasing life expectancy could affect the intersections

among the individual, technology, and the state. The Immortalists explores the philosophical questions of this work, including the problems for a state already unable to meet its obligations to the elderly. This film received critical acclaim and major media spots, including a spot in Time and on Last Call with Carson Daly. The Immortalists had an Oscar-qualifying theatrical run and screened at several of the world’s most prestigious film festivals. The film will be available via Video on Demand and through digital and online retailers in 2015.

— MPI introduced John to other filmmakers in the MPI network, including Hard Rock Havana director Nick Brennan, who gave John career advice. — John worked as a production assistant for a television series with CBS. — In 2014, Francisco hired John full-time.

— Vincent hired Regan fulltime and now he is directing his first feature-length documentary, Incarcerating US.

— Entered the MPI network when MPI supported her feature-length documentary Dog Days, which follows entrepreneurial street-food vendors trying to earn a living despite government red tape.

— Made in association with MPI, Incarcerating US uses real-world accounts to examine the wide-ranging effects of the U.S. criminal justice system.

— MPI awarded Laura Next-Level support to create Mama Rwanda, a short documentary about women in Rwanda who have turned to entrepreneurship to lift their families out of poverty.

MPI HELPS DEVELOP GREAT SCRIPTS THAT BECOME GREAT FILMS. It’s Wednesday morning on the West Coast and seven talented young screenwriters are joining a conference call, eager to discuss story structure and to critique each others’ projects. MPI’s executive vice presidents Erin O’Connor, PhD, and Maurice Black, PhD, lead the workshops, drawing on combined decades of teaching experience and storytelling expertise.

THE WORKSHOPS ARE COLLABORATIVE, EDUCATIONAL, AND INSPIRING.

MPI’s screenwriting workshops ensure the pro-freedom films of tomorrow are built on screenplays with well-developed characters and strong story structure. MATTHEW SZEWCZYK — Matthew is an awardwinning director whose international short documentaries on civil liberties, commercials, and music videos have generated millions of views online. — Matthew workshopped his script The Right Hand of God, a cautionary tale about the growing use of drone technology for surveillance, and the potential for abuse by individuals in power.

INDUSTRY LEADERS TEACH MPI FILMMAKERS NEW SKILLS. In the entertainment world, you’re only as good as your skills and your network. MPI’s online and in-person masterclasses strengthen both by connecting MPI filmmakers with industry experts. 2014 in-person masterclasses took place in New York and Los Angeles. The classes featured Academy Award and Emmy winner Charles Maynes (U-571, Twister, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars) and established independent filmmaker Georgia Hilton. Both are members of MPI’s Creative Council and shared sound design and visual effects tips.

Another FEE/MPI seminar will teach student filmmakers about how to effectively communicate liberty.

MPI Social Action Campaigns will give mainstream moviegoers a path to passionate, effective activism based around our films. Topics will include criminal justice reform and entrepreneurship as a means to end poverty.

A Liberty Fund seminar for advanced filmmakers, academics, and thought leaders will promote discussion about liberty on the small screen.

New MPI in the Classroom educational video content for teachers and parents will teach economics in an engaging way. Additional educational opportunities for talented pro-freedom filmmakers, including MPI Masterclasses, will connect filmmakers with industry experts.
