EDITOR’S L E T T E R

The decision to start an online magazine was an easy one for me. I have loved magazines my whole life - The beautiful images, the creative photography, the fashion, the writing. Magazines made me feel like Carrie Bradshaw, ready to conquer the world in a sophisticated, creative and epically stylish way. Do you feel that too? The thing is, a few years ago I stopped reading magazines. I loved both fashion and fitness, but I couldn’t find anything that gave me both at a high standard. Fitness magazines featured fashion, but not the luxe, creative and sophisticated fashion I wanted. Similarly, fashion/lifestyle magazines featured fitness and health advice, but not the evidence based, real-world actionable advice I wanted. Photoshopped cover models with zero diversity also did little for me - every time it was the same type of body, every time I hoped for a change and every time I felt a little disappointed. All types of women read these magazines, yet not all types of women are accurately represented in them. I felt this needed to change. A big issue (ha) I was having with women’s media was that the content and advertising often focused on diets, pseudoscientific health advice and unrealistic beauty standards - this is the opposite of empowering. More than anything, I wanted to create a place where women could learn, create, dream and be heard without judgement. And so here we are at issue 01 of MOVRE Magazine, which coincides perfectly with Christmas!

E LLE

Christmas is my favourite time of the year. The decorations, the joy, the music, the generosity. I am definitely the type of person who believes it’s never too early to put up your tree and I might even work out to a carol or two... However, I know many others don’t share my love of some parts of this season. For one, it’s swimwear season, and I know this can be a tough time for those of us who don’t feel like our body is “beach ready” (let me assure you, it is). Not to mention the endless holiday feasts that drag us away from our normal eating patterns and gym routines. For many women, this means spending much of the best time of the year feeling guilty or like we have failed ourselves for not sticking to our health plan. This issue is dedicated to anyone who often feels like that in December (or any time of the year!) In the coming pages you will find a number of ways to deal with this cycle of holiday guilt and get on with being the badass babe we know you are. MOVRE Magazine (pronounced “move”) is designed to give ambitious, sophisticated, health-conscious and rebellious women a place to call home. Women like you. I want to empower you with the chance to make decisions based on real knowledge, diverse beauty and worldly wisdom from other incredible humans. Oh, and of course to give you a beautifully designed publication that makes you feel powerful and inspired while reading. I hope this does just that for you.

Morning Routine: Roll over, turn off snooze, do the bathroom stuff and sit in front of my wardrobe for at least ten minutes. What. To. Wear. For me, what I wear can dictate my mood for the whole day. I’m lucky to work in a place where the office uniform is casual with a ‘you be you’ attitude. But of course, when you’re leaving the office to enter the big unknown world of client meetings, or have plans to meet with friends after work, you want to make sure you look a bit more fancy. Therein lies the challenge for me every morning.

What is style to you? Honestly? I’m still trying to figure this one out. I’ve been caught in the trap of feeling intimidated by what other people wear one too many times - it’s exhausting keeping up with it all. All I know is that I choose to wear clothing that makes me feel good, because it gives me the kick start I need to take on the 9-5 grind. If you feel confident in what you’re wearing, that’s style. Own and embrace what you wear and how you look, and style becomes your shadow.

HELLO S U M M E R

BY KERRIE CARUCCI “Hello summer - warm days, sultry nights & the time of year for festive celebrations” As we ease up to the end of 2017, our social calendars are filled with plenty of summer activities and frivolity. Rather than going into freakout mode with all the new occasions to show off your style, I’m going to show you a few quick tips for the perfect summer wardrobe, all wrapped up in a fashion capsule.

INJECTION OF COLOUR

staple or investment pieces. Choosing a main piece of clothing that is trend orientated will allow you to mix and match it throughout the season and also get your value per wear. Pictured below with a staple white jean from Seed, this new season Zara silk top in a vivid emerald green gives the perfect colour injection. It can be teamed with jeans, denim shorts, tucked into a pencil skirt for work or even layered under a shift dress for the cooler months.

A change of season doesn’t mean you have to buy a whole new wardrobe. Instead, take a look at what you have in your wardrobe currently. I suggest sorting your current clothing into similar colour blocks and have it hanging where you can see it. That means not on the floor, in a basket or shoved at the back of the cupboard! Having it visible allows you to see the overall picture of what is in your wardrobe so you can plan around it. If you are feeling completely overwhelmed by this then I urge you to contact myself for a chat about what options would work best for you on your journey out of the ‘overwhelm wardrobe-apocalypse’. Spring and cycling into summer has brought with it an abundance of fun, bright and deeply saturated colour palettes! YES! Bright gemstone colours such as emerald green, red, pink, yellow and orange allow you to mix and match your existing wardrobe, though also bring spark to

THE SUMMER SHORT Ladies, the warmer months are upon us and that means it’s time to get those pins out! If you live in Queensland (or anywhere warm!) then it goes without saying you need to own at least one pair of shorts in your capsule. I always struggle to find a pair that are the ‘perfect length’. I’m looking for a pair that will see me through all the summer occasions like afternoon barefoot bowls, dressed up at a long summer lunch (paired with a cute wedge) and of course, a pair that is also comfortable enough to wear at a festive feast. This season Witchery know what is up! With another injection of colour, bright red is shining through and they are doing a few different styles in shades that will allow you integrate a colour that is flattering but also on trend for the holiday season.

THE WHITE JEAN Even in summer there will be times when the weather cools off for a day or two. If this happens and you want to feel a little more dressy for an occasion (or lets be honest, you just love a good pair of jeans) then investing in a lighter shade of denim would be favourable.

THE STATEMENT BAG We saw this become a huge component of fashion, from runway to street style, throughout spring - and i’ll be the first to say I LOVE accessories! The trending statement bag, or clutch, is a brilliant way to subtlety inject seasonal colour, trends and textures if you’re unsure or less adventurous on the fashion front. For those who were around in the 70’s, or perhaps had a hand-me downs from Mum or Grandma, the bamboo or wooden bag has come back in a huge way! The ones featured here can be found at Best Dressed Accessories in a variety of different colours, shapes, styles and looks. As a stylist, I believe a statement bag is the perfect diverse and cost effective item in your wardrobe. A good one can take your outfit from summer, all the way to glam with a unique twist!

THE STANDOUT SKIRT Another Witchery find is this gorgeous and bright pink fluted skirt! Made of an amazing scuba nylon, the cut on this is flattering and every bit feminine. Dressed up or down, you can take this from Sunday brunch to a night out on the town with the girls. Also something to note for summer is this pink and red trend! Yes, you heard it! Pink paired with red might be a little fashion fear, however this combination has been huge on the fashion runways of Spring/Summer - so why not get a little adventurous! PS. This is a perfect combination to subtly celebrate the festive season without looking like a Christmas tree!

OFF THE SHOULDER & STATEMENT EARRINGS We have seen this trend carry over from last summer, and I personally love this trend! Off the shoulder is the easiest way to create and inspire feminine lines, not to mention it is the perfect canvas for a pair of statement earrings! This trend can be interpreted in many different ways including both tops and dresses to mix and match. An off the shoulder item is another simple piece to add to your capsule that will take you anywhere from a night out, to a day at work, to play! Lastly, we have the statement earring! For me this is the most incredible way to dress up an outfit, add texture, fun and colour, and most importantly can be a great talking point! A statement earring is another cost effective way to jazz up your wardrobe seasonally - a little bit of ear bling never hurt anyone, and the best part is there are sooo many different styles to choose from!

BEAUTY BE YOUR OWN KIND OF BEAUTIFUL

Rejoice! The season of glowing complexions and carefree minimal makeup is well and truly upon us. I love how summer always feels like an invitation to lighten up my beauty routine. Complexions are warmer and nothing gives my skin a kick quite like spending more time outdoors or swimming in the ocean. There’s no doubt a natural approach is the ticket for this season in the beauty department.

Whilst it’s a great time to strip things back and let your skin breathe, it is still important to put a bit of love into your skincare routine. At this time in particular, we need to top up our skin’s hydration levels and assist it in recovering from the elements outdoors. These are my favourite little tricks to help maximise that glow and harness a little bit of natural energy for your best summer skin.

SKIN OILS If there’s one misunderstood product making a comeback in the beauty world right now it’s skin oils. It may seem counter intuitive to add more oil to your skin, but during the warmer months, a light formula like Rosehip or Hemp Seed Oil is a one way ticket to plump, dewy skin. Use in place of your regular moisturiser and you are guaranteed to see a difference in your skin (that you’ll be hard pressed to find in a regular moisturiser). A prime example of “mother nature knows best”, botanical oils will help to regulate your skin’s own natural oil production. Yes that’s right, even if your skin type is oily there is an oil serum out there for you! Our favourites include Maaemo Organic’s Revitalise Face Elixir, Sukin’s Pure Rosehip Oil and Go-To Skincare’s Face Hero. These products are all super lightweight, making them comfortable and summer appropriate.

SUN PROTECTION

ready to get messy, there’s no denying Frank Body Scrub’s cult following is for a good reason. If you fall Slip, Slop, Slap… we’ve all heard it before, for a good off the wagon with your exfoliating routine, this is the reason. Sun protection is the most important element product that will get you back on. in your summer skin survival guide that will not only guarantee a fresh face this season, but for many more to come. Gone are the days of lathering on thick and One jar of coconut oil can change your life through uncomfortable lotions, today there are endless clever summer. You may already have one in your kitchen little products that you can easily sneak into your cupboard, but I highly suggest you grab another for your beauty routine. bathroom as it will be your new go-to. COCONUT OIL MASKS

The easiest way to include sun protection in your daily routine is with cheeky little products like the Bare Minerals Prime Time BB Primer, which works overtime containing an SPF of 30+. This one primes the skin for your daily makeup and provides a sheer tint to even your skin tone on those minimal makeup days. The key is making things so easy you can’t avoid it! Another of my favourites is Mecca’s To Save Face 50+. It comes in a stylish handbag friendly size which is oh so convenient for when you’re on the go and find yourself stuck in the sun.

can help to gently remove stubborn waterproof mascara and can be used as a hair mask to cure post salt-water dryness. After your swim, simply apply coconut oil to your hair and leave to absorb prior to your normal shampoo & conditioning routine! If you’re looking for a soothing treatment for easing a fresh sunburn, simply add a drop of lavender oil and apply to the skin. Even better, to add a sexy sheen to the skin for a night out, add a drop of your favourite liquid illuminiser! Trust me, this is just the beginning of what this au naturalé multi-purpose product can do.

EXFOLIATION

Keep an eye out for cold pressed oils which maintain all of their natural goodness like If you’re getting your pins out on the daily, some TLC Loving Earth Coconut Oil and Melrose Organic can go a long way to making them feel baby soft and Unrefined Coconut Oil. ready for denim cut-offs. ‘Tis the season for hair removal (if you choose to live the hair-free life) and we all know that without an exfoliation buddy, your shaving/waxing/laser/alternate-fuzz-free-treatment can come unstuck if you have poorly prepped skin. Not to mention when you’re getting your sweat on in the warmer weather, it’s even more important to step up the scrub to avoid uncomfortable irritation. A coarse body scrub fortified with nourishing oils is the best two-for-one you can get - say hello to twice the smoothing effects in half the time! I love Santorini Skin’s Elysian Pink Crystal Sea Salt formula. It is great for any active sun bunny as it is rich in nutrients like magnesium, calcium & potassium which replenishes your skin as it sloughs off those dead cells. if you’re MOVRE MAGAZINE

SKIN R I T U A L S

It’s great to get pampered by someone else, but nothing quite compares to gathering some natural ingredients and pampering yourself. I know you’re a busy woman, and DIY treatments can sometimes feel a little unnecessary when there is a day spa around the corner, but I assure you the benefits are real. Like meditation, skin rituals are a time for self-reflection and mindfulness. When you take the time out of your busy life to take care of yourself and to appreciate your skin, your subconscious mind takes note. This time spent going inwards is crucial in any self-love journey. And while you can most definitely journey to self-acceptance without these external rituals, they certainly make a difference in how you see yourself.

FEEL GOOD FACIAL INGREDIENTS: - 1 tablespoon of coconut oil - 1 teaspoon of fine grain sea salt

- Enough honey to cover your face STEP 1: Mix the coconut oil with some fine grain salt and gently massage into your face, neck and chest. This step cleanses and exfoliates. Focus on gratitude for your skin, your body and yourself for taking this time out.

GRINCH MODE FACE MASK

STEP 2: Wash the mixture off with a face washer and warm water. Rinse the face washer in warm water then apply a warm compress over your face to open your pores.

INGREDIENTS: - 1 fully ripe avocado - 1 tablespoon of honey

STEP 3:

STEP 1:

The fun part. Spread a layer of honey all over your face and leave it until it becomes tacky. Use your fingers to palpate the honey, causing a suction effect which helps to draw anything out of the skin that shouldn’t be there. I do this for several minutes working all over my face, especially the forehead, nose and chin.

Mash the avocado and combine with the honey. Spread the mixture over your face and down your neck until you resemble the Grinch (without the lack of Christmas cheer, of course).

During this step, focus on reframing any negative beliefs you have. For example, if you think you don’t deserve that promotion (or you’re scared to charge a certain amount for your services) now is a good time to reframe these thoughts to remind yourself of your worth. STEP 4: Wash off with a warm face washer and rinse all the honey out. Then repeat those warm compresses to keep the pores open for your mask.

STEP 2: Leave this on for 10-15 minutes. This is the perfect time to pop on a guided meditation. If you haven’t done much meditation before, guided soundtracks are the perfect way to start. There are literally thousands of YouTube channels dedicated to meditation, whether you prefer simple relaxed breathing, or adventurous fantasy storylines! STEP 3: Wash off your Grinch face to reveal your fresh new face underneath! Rinse the facewasher in cool water this time, and follow with cool compresses to close your pores. STEP 4: Don’t forget to moisturise! Apply coconut oil to your damp face if you want to keep the natural theme going, or alternatively use your regular moisturiser.

GROUNDED BODY SCRUB We love Frank body scrubs, but if you need a quick full body exfoliation this DIY coffee scrub is a great option. INGREDIENTS: - 1 cup coffee grounds (or sea salt) - 2 tablespoons of honey - 2 tablespoons of coconut oil STEP 1: Combine mixture in a bowl, adjusting as needed to get enough to cover your whole body. STEP 2: In the shower, wet your skin and gently massage this delicious mixture all over your body (not forgetting your feet and heels!) STEP 3: Rinse off under the shower. Note, coffee will go everywhere but don’t freak out - the coffee won’t stain! Just spend a little extra time making sure it’s all washed away. Follow this with either your normal tanning procedure or simply give your body a good moisturise. I guarantee your skin will feel like silk after this, and you will feel fully grounded and connected to your body once you’re done!

“It ’s important to feel inspired by your space.” -

J E S S I C A

With the new year approaching, it’s the perfect time to give a little love to your home and set the tone for a fresh start to the year ahead. After all, your space should be a place to relax and rejuvenate, so it’s important that it has a calming and refreshing vibe. These are my best tips for creating your very own little wellness sanctuary at home.

those little leftover items. Stylish baskets and boxes will disguise mess and create order, which in turn will make your space look bigger and feel more zen. As the old adage goes, a clear space is the best way to a clear mind.

DRESS IT UP

It’s time to layer up. Think linen, cushions, rugs and ornaments. The key is to create harmony with your EDIT décor, so as not to overwhelm the space. Tonal looks First things first, it’s time to strip back. That’s right, work well to create a relaxing vibe because they limit we’re about to get all Marie Kondo up in here (if you visual clutter and have a soothing effect on the eye. haven’t read her book, “The Life-changing Magic For an ultra relaxing aesthetic take your cues from of Tidying Up,” we suggest you get your hands on nature - accents of natural textures like timber, a copy ASAP). It’s time to get rid of the items that rattan, fur, and linen will all add depth to a tonal clutter up your space. Once you have pared back all palette, whilst helping to create a sense of grounding. that you can, think about clever storage solutions for If colour is more your jam, the trick is to add accents sparingly. Add a bold colour here or there in a vibrant uplifting hue. Try sunny yellows and oranges, a romantic pink, cooling blue, or a rejuvenating and refreshing splash of green in the form of an artwork or throw cushion. This will invite positive energy into the space, which is what we want! Having fewer, stronger accents placed strategically around the room will avoid making the space appear overwhelmed and maintain an overall sense of calm. MOVRE MAGAZINE

CHARACTER BUILDING

FINISHING TOUCHES

It is important that you feel inspired by your space. Make sure you are surrounding yourself with things that spark your creative juices and make you feel uplifted. Artwork is a great way to do this, so take the time to select pieces that really appeal to you.

The finishing touches you add to your space are all about the ambiance. Foliage can instantly freshen up a space and make it feel more inviting. The advantages of greenery don’t stop there - plants naturally clarify the air in your space which has endless benefits, including assisting sleep and improving concentration. This makes them an essential for your home office space.

A huge trend at the moment is clashing graphic quotes with painterly pieces in a framed collage. This style is perfect for incorporating a motivating quote or inspiring images such as a travel destination, eye catching artwork or a photograph of something that represents one of your goals.

Where you can, choose live plants. Both potted greenery and fresh cut flowers will make a huge impact in ‘breathing life’ into your space (pun most definitely intended).

What A Dietitian Really Wants You To Know About The Festive Season BY COURTNEY PHAROAH Ahh Christmas… ‘tis the season for slowing down, connecting with family, celebrating the year and getting ready for the January dieting season. Wait. What?

YOU ARE (& ALWAYS HAVE BEEN) WORTHY OF NOURISHMENT I see clients who spend a lot of time in “trade-off ” mode. Trade-off mode looks like, “If I’m going out to dinner today, I better not eat breakfast.” Or “I ate canapés at the party, so I better just stick to salad the next day” or even, “I’ll have a few drinks tonight, but only because I know I’ll be at my 8am spin class in the morning to burn off the calories.”

Yep, the diet industry often hijacks December holidays, which are meant to be a time of celebration and reflection. You’ve got to have your “bikini body” by now, you’ve got to “look great” in that new dress, you’ve got to be worried about that “dreaded” 5kg you’re going to gain and you’re primed and ready to “minimize the There’s a lot of seasonal food around and usually more damage” of the festive season come January. opportunities to eat away from home, both of which can trigger feelings of guilt and angst. When I think about how insidious diet culture is and how much joy it robs us of, I get inspired to take action. I want to get in there, grab diet culture by its dirty horns and smash it to pieces. To put it nicely. As a Non-Diet Dietitian, here’s what I’d love for you to know this festive season:

I want to tell you that you are worthy of nourishment. Period. You don’t need to earn the right to eat special foods, nor do you need to atone for any “extra” food or drink you consume. Your eating habits are likely to change for a couple of weeks and that’s okay. When you think about the holiday season in context, it’s maybe 1 month out of twelve. Thinking about it like this makes it a lot easier to relax and enjoy eating over the Christmas season.

make your meals and exercise work in with you. There will be plenty of time to resume your usual habits after the festive season. Although that’s no reason to go crazy overboard in January.

Even if your body shape or size changes over Christmas, it’s okay. It says nothing about your worth as a human being.

BY ELLE KULESZ Intuitive eating is the current buzzword, and contrary to popular belief it is not primarily for weight control and it is not a diet. Plain and simple, intuitive eating is just eating food in a way that feels good for you. That’s it.

will cover the first 3 principles. In the coming issues I will cover the other 7! I really encourage you to read the book “Intuitive Eating” by Elyse Resch and Evelyn Tibole. You’ll get SO much out of this book, I promise.

How unfortunate that this is currently a radical The most important thing to note is that these are idea in our society. principles, not rules. Diets have rules that are rigid and controlling. Intuitive eating has principles “What if I gain a bunch of weight?” which ebb and flow with your life as it happens. “What if I only ever want to eat chocolate?” Doesn’t the latter sound much more appealing? I think it does. “That sounds pretty unhealthy.” Comments like these are often thrown around in Let’s get into it. conversations about intuitive eating, but usually these comments come from a place of not truly understanding what intuitive eating actually is.! I know this because I used to say them all the time. I was terrified of giving myself full control of food because I didn’t trust my instincts. These kind of comments come from a place of fear, because that is what we have been taught to feel when we don’t follow diet rules! But don’t you just want to break the rules? I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of diet rules that don’t actually make you healthier and instead just leave you feeling guilty for enjoying food. The moment I let go of these rules, I felt so free. And none of the terrible things I thought would happen, actually happened. These rules stop you from enjoying life and they also stop you from applying your brain power to other areas where you could thrive (like business, relationships or travel). 58

So here is a quick introductory guide on the principles of intuitive eating. This is part 1, MOVRE were weMAGAZINE

1. REJECT THE DIET MENTALITY If you’re living in the developed world, you are most likely surrounded by the diet mentality. So surrounded, in fact, that you may think it’s normal to be discussing your latest weight loss diet over coffee (almond milk, no sugar) with friends. As someone who has “been there, done that” with every single diet you can think of, I can tell you that you won’t feel better when (and if) you do get that body (or that feeling of control) you covet. So when I say “reject the diet mentality”, I mean recognise it and tell it to eff off. The diet mentality is far from empowering and quite frankly, you have better things to do with your life.

- Dieting increases feelings of body dissatisfaction, food and body preoccupation, food cravings, distraction from other health related goals, reduced self-esteem and weight stigmatisation and discrimination (Bacon and Aphramore 2011; Tomiyama et al. 2016; Tylka et al. 2014) - Dieting causes disconnection from self and body. This makes it harder to know what you want or to hear the signals your body is giving you. This makes it impossible to “know what to eat” and to eat in a way that serves you best for life.

- Dieting tells you that smaller is always better, but science says that isn’t always the case. Everyone is Fast, permanent and easy weight loss doesn’t exist, different and as such, not everyone will thrive in the no matter who tries to tell you it does. Weight loss smallest body possible. also doesn’t always make you healthier (contrary to So when you really dig down deep, is dieting really popular belief) but that’s a topic for another day. the way you want to spend your life? Is feeling guilty Here’s the thing, if you keep looking for the next for going “off plan” or for eating too much dessert best diet, or the answer to your dream body, you will really serving you? Is counting calories and worrying never be able to eat in a way you enjoy. It’s just not about “making food fit” actually improving your life? possible to do when you are in the diet mentality I’d say it probably isn’t. It definitely did nothing to because intuitive eating (a.k.a eating in a way you improve my life, or the lives of many people around enjoy) requires you to listen to your body. me. You can’t listen to your body when you are trying to At the same time, I’m not here to judge if you do choose follow diet rules. You just can’t. to diet. We are surrounded by the diet mentality and What those in the diet mentality often forget is that it would be unlikely for you to never caught up in health encompasses your mind, body and soul. It’s it. I’m just sharing my own experience with dieting, not just physical. Dieting focuses primarily on a what I’ve learned from the book “Intuitive Eating” physical outcome and completely bypasses the rest. and from the countless hours of research I have done And in the rare case that it does address the mental on the topic. I simply wish to empower you with the side of things, it’s usually trying to teach you how to truth - then it’s up to you to make the decision that adopt a disciplined mindset that allows you to better feels best for you at this time. follow rules… The beauty of that? Personally, it took me a few years of research to actually allow A few other things about dieting that you need myself to implement these principles in my own life. to know, straight from the Intuitive Eating book: MOVRE MAGAZINE

2. HONOUR YOUR HUNGER If you allow yourself to become ravenously hungry, you will always eat more than you plan to. I am not saying it’s bad to feel hungry sometimes, but it’s not good to always feel hungry. When you always feel hungry, your body goes into scarcity mode - food becomes something you need to desperately find and stock up on, because your body isn’t sure if and when it will get food again. This is part of the binge-restrict cycle and it is not exactly a healthy relationship with food. It becomes difficult to live and enjoy life when you are constantly thinking about food - either when your next meal will be or the fact that you just overate. Food is energy, therefore it makes sense to keep yourself fed when possible to fuel your body and brain function. Food is also enjoyment, so it doesn’t really make sense to stop yourself from enjoying it. Keeping yourself fed when you are hungry prevents this binge-restrict cycle and fosters a positive food relationship. It’s time to ditch the rules and just listen to what your body is telling you.

Note: There are some cases where hunger signals are impaired, such as illness (including eating disorders), competitive sport and some medications. Remember that nourishment is one of the highest forms of self-care. So if you are experiencing this, it can be a good idea to develop a plan to eat on the basis of self-care rather than specifically when you are hungry (because you may not know when that is). I highly recommend doing this under the guidance of a dietician.

3. MAKE PEACE WITH FOOD Food is not the enemy.

any other negative emotion. Food is either positive or neutral. Your worth as a person does not change It’s really important to understand that when you depending on what you choose to eat. think of certain foods as off limits or “unhealthy”, you automatically want them more. We spoke about the You know what’s crazy? Sometimes when people binge-restrict cycle earlier in regards to hunger, but step back and unconditionally allow themselves to binging as a result of mental deprivation is possibly eat ANY food, they actually eat less, but truly enjoy even more common than physical deprivation. and savour every bite of what they do eat. Have you noticed that most of your cravings are for foods that you try not to eat too much of?

This happened to me, and I can tell you meal times are much more enjoyable these days.

OR foods that you feel guilty for eating too often?

Another interesting thing that occasionally happens is rebellious eating. This is when you eat something That’s because these foods have been ruled as “off in an effort to rebel against someone who has tried to limits”, which can cause a binge response that tell you what (or what not) to eat. Eating “whatever happens regardless of you actually complying to that you want” in order to make a rebellious stand is rule or not. Mentally, you feel like you shouldn’t be not making peace with food. It is not coming from eating it, which leads to you craving it more, which a place of self-care or nourishment, instead it is leads to a binge when you do finally give into that reactive and disconnected. You don’t have to prove craving. What a fun cycle to be in. to yourself or others that you are allowed to eat. The act of trying to stop thinking about food can Recognise the moment if this happens to you, but actually increase food related thoughts and food don’t berate yourself for it. It is interesting to note consumption. It’s the same concept as the purple when you feel defensive around food and dissect zebra. If I tell you to never think about a purple why this might be happening. It’s a natural response, zebra, what’s the first thing you think about? after all. The more you recognise it, the more power It sounds counterintuitive to just allow yourself to you have to make a positive change. unconditionally eat all foods, but it’s such a huge Remember that making peace with food can be a piece of the intuitive eating puzzle that most miss. difficult and long process. Know that you are on the right path and you always have the power to change your mind if you don’t like the path you are on. Stay tuned for our next issue where we will go deeper on intuitive eating. MOVE IT T H I S

C H R I S T M A S

BY ELLE KULESZ We all know Christmas is hectic. Like, really hectic. It’s that time of year that brings so much happiness and joy, but equal amounts of stress and overwhelm. During a stressful (but fun) holiday period, the first thing to go is usually our selfcare routine. More importantly, our movement routine often goes out the window for the duration of the festive season. Unfortunately, this is often followed by a mad dash to the gym on January 1st because we feel so guilty for “letting ourselves go” over Christmas. A few things are concerning with this narrative, but here’s two things to think about to reframe this story: 1. If you need to take some time off the gym, make it your decision. Deciding to take a break when you don’t have time, or just feel like you need one, is empowering. Feeling out of control because you can’t get to the gym and feeling guilty because of it, is the opposite of empowering. 2. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. If you go to the gym in the new year having made a resolution to work out 5 days a week forever, even though you know this isn’t sustainable, you’re setting yourself up for failure. It’s impossible to create a movement habit, and enjoy it, if you’re constantly feeling like a failure for missing sessions or not reaching your goal. Start with an achievable goal, even something as simple as just moving twice a week, and build on it from there. Oh, and don’t make it a new years resolution. Start now - your body doesn’t recognise dates. I personally love trying new styles of movement around Christmas time. The weather is nice, friends are on holidays, family are around - it’s the perfect environment to get moving! One thing to note is that I don’t set unrealistic targets at this time. Goals like working out a certain number of days a week (or any body-type related goals) are unrealistic if you are out of your usual routine, on holidays or just super busy. Instead, I just go with the flow and fit in movement where I can. I like to set goals based around trying new things over summer. So I might set a goal to try a certain fitness class, learn a new movement or do something different with a friend before summer finishes. Experience based goals make movement more fun and achievable when you’re busy. Making it fun and changing things up is the best way to fit exercise in when you’re busy - if it’s new and exciting you’re more likely to make time for it! 64

POWER UP YOUR NEXT WORKOUT

You may not realise it, but the way you talk to yourself while you exercise is important. Your self-talk can change your mood, your work ethic and influence your results. It’s powerful stuff. How do you talk to yourself while you move? “I have to keep running otherwise I won’t look good in that dress.” “OMG I’m SO unfit, this shouldn’t feel so hard.” “This is terrible, I hate this, I wish it was over now.” “I just need to burn X number of calories, then I can stop.” Do these words feel empowering, caring or positive? Unfortunately they are very common thoughts for women to have in an exercise environment, so don’t be hard on yourself if you identify with them. Of course no thought is inherently “bad”, but it’s helpful to learn how to recognise thoughts that may not be serving you. This then gives you the power to reframe them into more positive ones! Negative self-talk may seem motivating at the time, but what else is happening? For starters, you are creating an environment where exercise is a form of punishment. Punishment for eating the wrong way, for looking the wrong way, for being the wrong size, for being unfit... the list goes on. When exercise becomes penance, you’re less likely to get the positive benefits from it (like improved self-image, enhanced mood and confidence) and less likely to move regularly. Most of us want to find a way to incorporate exercise into our lives in a way we enjoy and a way that makes us feel better. So it would make sense to do everything we can to at least try to enjoy it and use it as a positive tool of self-improvement, rather than a negative tool of “I need this because I’m not good enough” (or not doing it at all due to negative associations). One way to change the way we feel about movement is to practice positive affirmations before, during and after exercise. I’ve put together a list of my favourites that have helped me to reframe the way I view movement and myself. 66

6 AFFIRMATIONS TO FOCUS ON DURING EXERCISE

Pick one or two statements and focus on these during your whole workout (or come up with your own). Another way to make this more effective is to pair an affirmation with a power pose. So while you’re resting between exercises, put your hands on your hips and stand up tall. It will just look like you’re resting, but you’ll really be pumping yourself up with an affirmation and ready to rock the next set! 1. I am enough, exactly as I am in this moment. 2. I move as a form of self-care, to feel my body, to be in my body and to appreciate and show gratitude towards my body. 3. I am powerful and strong, and getting stronger everyday. 4. I feel happy and excited when I move my body. 5. I fuel myself with gratitude, nourishment and love and this makes me feel full of energy and strength. 6. I feel proud of who I am and the way I am caring for myself, both mentally and physically.

LET YOUR DESIRES D E F I N E

Y O U R

D R E A M S

BY RYAN DRAKE You know you want it. And you want it bad. Reaaaal bad. You’re desiring; aspiring; striving and planning. It’s been brewing deep within for quite some time. You ache for it — and it aches for you. So you hatch a plan. Write down your to-do list. Create your bucket list. Strategise. Assign yourself some accountability partners. You download apps that track your habits and start to follow inspirational people on Tumblr, Instagram and Pinterest — just so you have some extra motivation on the days you can’t be bothered getting out of bed! So you begin your pursuit; the chase of that elusive dream… Except… Hold on a moment! You’re not actually after the goal itself. Not at all. You’re actually after a feeling.

Our approach to achievement is totally back-tofront. We chase hard after the things we want to have, own, accomplish, and experience. We talk about it, wish for it, dream about it, make vision boards for it, cross our fingers, hold our breath, yearn and pray. We hope that once we reach that next goal, obtain the next item, earn the promotion, experience the next whatever or find someone who finally understands us, that somehow we’ll be fulfilled when we get there. It’s completely backwards. I believe there’s much to be said about how media and advertising has warped our perception of what we think we want versus what we actually want. Because of that, we waste so much time and energy pursuing things that don’t matter at all or aren’t important to us.
