OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Potential warning signs for breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women across the globe.

According to the World Cancer Research Fund International, there more than 2.26 million new cases of breast cancer in women in 2020. Such gures are sobering, but it’s important to recognize that breast cancer survival rates have improved dramatically in recent decades, providing hope to the millions of women who may be diagnosed with the disease in the years to come.

Various factors have helped to improve breast cancer survival rates, and education about the disease is certainly among them. Women are their own greatest allies against breast cancer, and learning to spot its signs and symptoms is a great rst step in the ght against this potentially deadly, yet treatable disease.

Knowing your body

e American Cancer Society urges women to take note of how their breasts normally look and feel. at knowledge is vital because it helps women recognize when something does not look or feel good to the touch with their breasts. Screening alone may not be su cient, as the ACS notes that mammograms do not nd every breast cancer.

Signs and symptoms

When women are well acquainted with

how their breasts look and feel, they’re in better position to recognize any abnormalities, which may or may not be indicative of breast cancer. e ACS reports that the following are some potential warning signs of breast cancer.

• A new lump or mass: e ACS indicates that this is the most common symptom of breast cancer. A lump or mass that is cancerous is often painless, but hard and has irregular edges. However, lumps caused by breast cancer also can be soft, round and tender. Some even cause pain.

• Swelling: Some women experience swelling of all or part of a breast even if they don’t detect a lump.

• Dimpling: e skin on the breast may dimple. When this occurs, the skin on the breast sometimes mimics the look of an orange peel.

• Pain: Pain on the breast or nipple could indicate breast cancer.

• Retraction: Some women with breast cancer experience retraction, which occurs when the nipple turns inward.

• Skin abnormalities: Breast cancer may cause the skin on the breast to redden, dry out, ake, or thicken.

• Swollen lymph nodes: Some women with breast cancer experience swelling of the lymph nodes under the arm or near the collarbone.

e presence of any of these symptoms merits a trip to the doctor. Women with these symptoms should not immediately assume they have breast cancer, as the ACS notes that various symptoms of breast cancer also are indicative of non-cancerous conditions that a ect the breasts. Only a physician can diagnose breast cancer, which underscores the importance of reporting symptoms to a doctor immediately.

golden years!

How to stay mentally sharp after retirement

If asked to describe how they envision retirement, many professionals might reference travel, time spent with grandchildren and various recreational pursuits. Few, if any, would mention cognitive decline. However, cognitive decline poses a signi cant threat to aging men and women, especially during retirement.

Researchers have long since recognized that certain cognitive abilities begin to decline with advanced age, even among elderly individuals who are healthy. However, despite that decline, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that dementias like Alzheimer’s disease are not an inevitable part of aging. In fact, the CDC estimates that as many as 40 percent

of dementia cases may be prevented or delayed. In addition, the CDC reports that it’s not uncommon for routine memory, skills and knowledge to stabilize or even improve as the brain ages.

at’s good news for retirees who want to spend their post-work life pursuing their passions and hobbies.

Individuals also can embrace some strategies to stay mentally sharp in retirement.

• Consider delaying retirement. Even if early retirement is a dream, it might be better to work a little longer than you had planned. A 2021 study published in the journal SSM - Population Health found that postponed

retirement is bene cial to cognitive function for all genders, races/ethnicities, educational levels, and professional status. e study reported that individuals who waited until age 67 to retire experienced less cognitive decline than those who retired prior to turning 67.

• Make exercise part of your retirement routine. A lack of structure may seem enticing to individuals who have spent decades working. However, many retirees nd that little structure loses it appeal quickly after calling it quits. When creating a new routine in retirement, include regular exercise. According to the Mayo Clinic, studies indicate that people who are physically active are less likely to experience a decline in their mental function. So daily exercise not only gives retirees something to do, but also bene ts their brains.

• Enroll in an adult education course. A 2014 study published in the journal JAMA Neurology examined the association between lifetime intellectual enrichment and cognitive decline in the older population. e study’s authors found that higher levels of latelife cognitive activity were associated with higher levels of cognition. e study’s authors concluded that lifetime intellectual enrichment might delay the onset of cognitive impairment. Retirees can look into adult learning programs at local colleges and universities to see if anything piques their interest.

Retirement can be everything professionals hope it will be, especially for those who make a concerted e ort to maintain optimal cognitive function after they call it a career.

I love your plan — you pay what you say!” Colleen W., MO Many Americans are fortunate to have dental coverage for their entire working life, throughemployer-provided benefits. When those benefits end with retirement, paying dental bills out-of-pocket can come as a shock, leading people to put off or even go without care. Simply put — without dental insurance, there may be an important gap in your healthcare coverage. Previous dental work can wear out. Even if you’ve had quality dental work in the past, you shouldn’t take your dental health for granted. In fact, your odds of having a dental problem only go up as you age.
