Cedar River State Water Trail
••
offers 25 miles of paddling fun in Mower County
Mower County hosts 25 miles of the Cedar River State Water Trail in Minnesota. Officially launched in 2012, the Cedar River State Water Trail officially begins at the Mower Co. Road 2 bridge east of the village of Lansing and flows down through the city of Austin to the Minnesota-Iowa border. Cedar River Watershed District – which spearheaded the legislative effort in 2011 to designate the Cedar River as a State Water Trail – has free brochure maps for the Cedar River State Water Trail created by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. DNR also has information on a website specifically for the Cedar River State Water Trail, including river-level data for paddlers to know how the water is flowing. Paddlers on the Cedar River will find moderately flowing waters cutting through a beautifully wooded
•• ••
corridor. There are no major rapids on this stretch of the Cedar River, making it ideal for beginning canoeists. Lots of wildlife can be found while paddling down the Cedar, which also hosts a variety of fish, especially smallmouth bass and rock bass. Eventually, the Cedar River becomes one of Iowa’s major waterways and connects with the Iowa River before emptying into the Mississippi River in southeast Iowa. Access to the Cedar River is available in numerous areas, including the Ramsey Dam north of Austin; several locations within the city of Austin; the DNR’s Riverwood Landing south of Austin; and the county bridges crossing the Cedar. Cedar River Canoe & Kayak Service in Austin rents watercraft for paddling the Cedar River and offers drop-off, pick-up service.
