How to Ask for a Letter of Recommendation Knowledge, skills and personality can get students far, but having the right people in their corners can open doors for new opportunities that students might otherwise never have considered. Perhaps this is why recommendations are so coveted when applying to schools. Asking for a letter of recommendation is something that should be done with forethought. The correct approach and proper timing can mean the difference between receiving a recommendation or not. Who to ask The first step for students is to decide who they want to ask for a recommendation. Select those teachers who know you well or can validate how you performed or improved in class. Opt for a teacher whose class you recently took so the recommendation

reflects the student you are today and not the student you might have been when you were younger. It can also help to ask for a recommendation from teachers or staff who have sufficient experience. Their input may carry more weight than someone whose career is less accomplished. A well-established teacher who leads a class that pertains to your academic goals is a good fit. Remember to consider the requirements of a college or university as well. Schools frequently ask for recommendations from specific people, such as a teacher in a certain subject. Ask early Teachers may be inundated with college letter recommendation requests around application deadlines and at the end of semesters. It’s better to leave plenty

of time than to put teachers under pressure. The same rule applies to anyone else you’re asking to write you a recommendation. Request in person Underscore the importance of the recommendation by making it a personal request. Schedule an appointment with the individual and discuss why you believe he or she would be the right person to provide the recommendation. Remind the person of your attributes and point out something that exemplifies your skills. Speaking face-to-face shows respect and gives you the advantage to make your points personally, rather than through email. Make the process easier Provide all of the necessary items to help the person along. This can include a brief résumé, academic progress report, required forms, and so on. Also offer any college- or employer-directed requests. As the deadline looms, offer concise reminders that you will need the recommendation. Offer to pick it up personally. Make copies or scan and save the original just in case a mix-up in the admissions office occurs. Recommendations are a key part of landing a job or being offered acceptance into a college or university. Asking the right people early will translate into recommendations that paint an accurate picture of applicants.

Some Telltale Signs of Engine Troubles

Engine troubles are many drivers’ worst nightmares. Whether they occur out on the road or they prevent drivers from leaving their driveways in the morning, engine troubles can quickly derail plans and cost drivers substantial amounts of money. Thankfully, engine troubles are often noticeable long before cars break down. need of work can avoid being stranded on the road or at home. · Vehicle shaking: One telltale sign of engine trouble is when a vehicle shakes while it’s moving. Drivers of old cars and trucks may not expect the smoothest of rides, but cars that shake, sometimes violently, could be experiencing problems. Sometimes a car might shake if its spark plugs need replacing. That’s an easy, inexpensive fix that drivers can do on their own in a matter of minutes. A more serious cause of the vehicle shaking could be problems with its timing belt or fuel intake system. Drivers who inspect and/or replace their spark plugs but notice their vehicles are still shaking should take their cars into their mechan-

ics immediately. · Sudden gas mileage reduction: Drivers who notice they’re not getting as much bang for their gas bucks as they used to might have engine troubles to blame. According to Pep Boys, a dropoff in gas mileage might be indicative of an issue in the compression stroke of the engine. Such an issue can typically be fixed by having the fuel system serviced, which will clean the fuel system and can help restore the vehicle’s performance and reduce emissions. · Noises: If driving has become as noisy as a rock concert, drivers should take heed that this could be indicative of engine trouble. Pep Boys notes that noises typically indicate abnormalities in the combustion flow. Such noises may include knocking, hissing and popping. Vehicles making these noises should be taken to a mechanic immediately. · Stalling: Vehicles that jerk or stall also may be experiencing engine troubles. While old spark plugs might be the culprit, stalling or jerking may indicate clogged fuel lines or fuel filters. Such issues may also be traced to issues with the vehicle’s computer system. Bring such issues to the attention of a mechanic, and reduce their frequency with regular oil changes.

Brain-Healthy Habits to Embrace Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues.

The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes.

Exercise Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help “Slip” into the ease of LeRoy - Hometown Comfort with High Quality Care Respite Care, Assisted Living and Memory Care • Dedicated, caring & trained staff on-site 24 hours a day • RN and/or LPN available 7 days/week • Emergency call system • Exercise program • Daily activities • Real Home Cooking • Weekly Housekeeping and Laundry available

generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels.

Quit smoking The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels.

of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them.

A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

Eat healthy foods Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues.

Consume caffeine Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels.

Work the brain Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release

Trails

The Blazing Star Trail 6 miles of 8 foot wide asphalt in excellent condition. The Blazing Star State Trail is paved and runs from the north side of Albert Lea Lake in Albert Lea to Myre-Big Island State Park, a distance of approximately six miles. Future plans call for extending the trail east through the small town of Hayward to Austin’s trail network and the Shooting Star State Trail. The long-term goal is to extend the trail from Albert Lea all the way east to the Mississippi River.

The Shooting Star Trail

22 miles of 8 foot wide asphalt in excellent condition. The eastern trailhead is in LeRoy on MN 56 near US 63. The trail goes immediately through Lake Louise State Park on toward Taopi and Adams, right past the city park and on to the western trailhead in Rose Creek, 5 miles south of I-90 on MN 56, which is just a few miles outside of Austin.

Pristine Prairie and Native Wildflowers: Much of the trail has been built over what was once the railway of the old Milwaukee Road which dates back to the opening of the pristine prairies. That means this trail takes a person through remnants of the centuries-old tall grass prairie. Lake Louise State Park: Because the trail runs through the park with its own picnic and camping facilities, hiking trails and even horse facilities, NO park admission fee is required for those who enter the park on the trail.

Wapsi-Great Western Line Trail 18.5 miles of paved surface on the north branch and 5 miles on the south branch The Wapsi-Great Western Line (WGWL) Trail is a 23.5 mile paved rural escape with a Northern Branch of 18.5 miles and a Southern Branch of five completed miles. The trailhead is located in Riceville, nestled in northern Iowa off U.S. Highway 9. The majority of the trail runs on abandoned railroad beds and winds through rural countryside. Less than one mile is on shared roadway. You will traverse through five biospheres: prairie, wetland, farmland, marsh and woodlands. You will cross three waterways: Wapsipinicon River, Watson’s Creek and Lake Hendricks. You may encounter white tail deer, muskrat, otter, turkey, pheasant and numerous native species. The WGWL Trail has been designated as the interstate connecting trail between Iowa and Minnesota. Only one mile is unfinished in Iowa before connecting to Minnesota’s Shooting Star Trail in southern Minnesota. Come support us as we finish the connection! The WGWL Welcome Center and Trailhead is located at 110 E Main St. in Riceville.

Parking & Rest Areas: You will find plenty of parking at the trailhead at LeRoy, at the Adams City Park, near the Rose Creek trailhead and at the Rose Pedaler on MN 56 and at the Taopi rest area. Restrooms and picnic areas are found at the Adams City park adjacent to the trail, at Taopi and at the LeRoy trailhead. Bike racks have been placed at a number of key places and rest benches, too. Places to Stay: Riders who wish to stay overnight may contact the Rose Pedaler/Log Cabin Inn (SE edge of Rose Creek on MN 56) or Sweets Hotel (on Main Street in LeRoy on MN 56). It will also be “camping season” at Lake Louise State Park, one of the top-rated camping facilities in the MN State Park system. Adams City Park also has overnight camping and an outdoor swimming pool near the park. Food Service: Rose Creek, Adams and LeRoy establishments offer choices of fine dining, down-home cooking, and take out. Sightseeing & Historical Interest: All the cities, Rose Creek, Adams, Taopi and LeRoy have other places of interest to visit, such as historical buildings, prairie preserves with many native wildflowers, including some rare ones.

Browndsdale

The Village of Brownsdale was legally established on July 7th, 1856, although the first settlers came in the spring of 1855. At this time 3 Norwegian families filed claims to land. Here they built sod homes that measured 10 feet by 12 ft. which was the requirement at that time. The 3 families of the original settlers sold their claims and moved west in the spring of 1856. Among the first to come here in the spring of 1856 were the Brown brothers, Hosmer and Andrew. Only a trail ran east to west through town which they named Main Street. The road section north to south was called Mill St. because the Brown Brothers were setting up a saw mill on the South bank of the creek.

Historic Mantorville

is located in southeast Minnesota, alon g the South Branch of the Middle Fork of the Zumbro Rive r, in a landscape of rolling hills amid the prairie farm land of Dodge County. Known as the source for Mantorville Limestone, our rich history is evident by the limestone buil dings in our historic downtown area. The Mantorville Historic District, along with other locations outside of the District, is listed on the National Registry of Historic Plac es. Many of the original limestone buildings remain viab le to the community today. We are home to the historic Hubbell House and are the county seat of Dodge Cou nty Mantorville is a quaint hamlet, reminisc ent of a time in the past. Founded in 1854, the City is one of the oldest in Minnesota. The City is named after Peter and Riley Mantor, brothers who came to the settl ement in 1853. Its population of 1,197 enjoys the relax ed atmosphere and simplicity. In the summer you can enjoy a stop at the Chocolate Shoppe, or play at Riversid e Park. Of course, you can sit on the river bank and see the children fish or watch the lazy water flow over the dam . You won’t want to miss the Melodramas at the Opera House.
