Dining Popular Trends in the Restaurant Industry Dining out is no longer reserved for celebrating milestones or other special occasions. Many people dine out regularly for meals. A 2016 Gallup poll found that 61 percent of Americans eat dinner out at least once a week, and 16 percent are frequent diners, eating out three or more times per week. People who regularly dine out may have noticed some of the growing trends that have emerged in

recent years that are helping to shape dining experiences. · Picked-on-property offerings: Many restaurants now serve foods grown, picked and processed on the premises. Rooftop or small courtyard gardens enable restaurateurs to pass the freshness on to customers. Chefs grind their own spice blends, harvest their own eggs, cure their own bacon, and embrace other hyper-local fare. · Gut-friendly foods: Some restaurants are experimenting with preparing and offering foods that are friendly to the digestive tract. These establishments emphasize prebiotic and probiotic ingredients and focus some of their efforts on producing menus with foods that boast anti-inflammatory properties. · Streamlined menus: Food waste is a problem across the globe. Operating a sustainable restaurant requires careful decisions about the foods that make it onto the menu. Instead of offering five different chicken dishes, a restaurant may focus on two or three popular standards to cut back on waste. · Fast casual: Fast casual restaurants do not offer

These establishments also may be headed by trained and experienced chefs who add unique twists to popular menu items. · Extended delivery options: Dining out doesn’t have to mean eating away from home. Employment Stay Mentally Fresh During the Workday Energy levels tend to ebb and flow throughout a typical workday. A cup of coffee may provide some caffeine-infused spark in the morning, but a big lunch can squash energy later in the afternoon. Waning mental sharpness as the workday progresses can compromise productivity, making it more difficult for workers to complete projects on time. That, in turn, can contribute to stress. In fact, in its “2017 Stress in America” survey, the American Psychological Association found that 58 percent of Americans say work is a significant source of stress. Staying mentally fresh during a workday can pay a host of benefits, and the following are just a few ways to maintain mental focus until quitting time.

• Exercise regularly. The physical benefits of routine exercise are well documented. But even the most ardent fitness enthusiasts may not realize just how big an impact physical activity is having on their brains. The Harvard Medical School notes that exercise stimulates regions of the brain that release a chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, which rewires memory circuits so they can function better. A stronger memory can help workers recall project details and deadlines more easily, even as the workday draws to a close. • Avoid the “quick fix.” Relying on a beverage or snack to provide a quick mental boost may end up compromising your mental sharpness. Foods and beverages that are high in sugar may provide an imme-

diate energy boost, but that spike is almost instantly followed by a crash that can adversely affect your mental sharpness. Stick to healthy snacks, such as fruits and vegetables, and avoid late afternoon cups of coffee, which studies have shown make it harder to fall asleep at night, thereby compromising your energy levels the next day.

• Take a walk outdoors. Spending some time outdoors during a lunch break, or even a quick, post-lunch stroll around the office grounds, can provide a break for the brain. That break can help the brain refocus, improving productivity as a result. One great way to get outdoors during busy workdays is to conduct meetings outside when the weather permits. This gives everyone a chance to recharge their brains in the great outdoors, and few people would prefer a dusty conference room to a nearby park or picnic area outdoors. Various strategies can help working professionals maintain their mental sharpness throughout the workday.

Automotive Develop a Vehicle Maintenance Schedule The oft-sudden expense of vehicle repairs can throw monthly budgets into disarray. Maintaining a routine service schedule is one way for drivers to keep repair costs down. The online automotive resources Edmunds.com says many car owners do not adequately prepare for scheduled maintenance, and may not give maintenance a thought until it’s too late. The first step drivers take upon purchasing a new or preowned vehicle should be to familiarize themselves with the vehicle’s owner’s manual, which is filled with valuable information and likely includes maintenance interval recommendations. Next, drivers should learn about their vehicle, which is particularly relevant when buying a preowned vehicle. Getting to know how the car or truck rides, as well as any sounds it may make, can provide drivers with a solid foundation they can then use to keep their cars running strong. Routine service typically includes tire rotation, oil changes and topping off of fluids. So just how long

between service appointments can a car go? Here are some generalized estimates. • Oil change: Oil chemistry and engine technology have improved so much that most cars can go well beyond the once-recommended 3,000 mile interval between oil changes. Now many vehicle manufacturers recommend between 5,000 and 10,000 miles between changes, advises Edmunds. Drivers should err on the side of caution if they do a lot of stop-andgo driving and short trips. Other drivers may want to invest in vehicles that have oil change maintenance minders built in. A light or countdown will come on the dashboard, indicating when the oil has reached the end of its usefulness. • Tire rotation: Rotating tires helps prolong the life of the tires and alleviates uneven tread and wear. During the rotation, each tire is removed and relocated to a different position to ensure that all the tires will wear evenly. Michelin Tires states that tires should be rotated around every six months, or between 6,000 and 8,000 miles.

Automotive

• Vehicle fluids: Your best bet is to see what the manufacturer recommends in regard to fluids such as transmission fluid, differential oil, brake fluids, coolant, etc. Some transmissions need regular maintenance, while others can go 150,000 miles between changes, according to the vehicle information site The Drive. Coolant typically can last 100,000 miles. For these types of changes, it may be best to go to a mechanic or service center familiar with your make and model rather than a quick-lube center, as knowing when to drain and refill can be more complicated. Service schedules can be designed to adhere to manufacturers’ recommendations and drivers’ personal preferences.

Senior Focus Daily Steps to Keep Your Heart Healthy Heart disease is a formidable foe. According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease accounts for nearly 25 percent of all deaths in the United States each year. Issues relating to the heart affect both men and women, and an estimated 15 million adults in the U.S. have coronary heart disease, the most common type of heart disease. And heart disease is not exclusive to the United States, as the Heart Research Institute says that every seven minutes in Canada someone dies from heart disease or stroke. Such statistics are disconcerting, but they can serve as a wake-up call that compels people to prioritize heart health. Fortunately, heart disease is often preventable and people can employ various strategies to reduce their risk. • Stop smoking right now. One of the best things to do to protect the heart is to stop smoking. The Heart Foundation indicates that smoking reduces

oxygen in the blood and damages blood vessel walls. It also contributes to atherosclerosis, or a narrowing and clogging of the arteries. • Eat healthy fats. When eating, choose polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats and avoid trans fats as much as possible. Trans fats increase one’s risk of developing heart disease by clogging arteries and raising LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Read food labels before buying anything at the store. • Keep your mouth clean. Studies show that bacteria in the mouth involved in the development of gum disease can travel to the bloodstream and cause an elevation in C-reactive protein, a marker for blood vessel inflammation. Brush and floss twice daily, and be sure to schedule routine dental cleanings. • Get adequate shut-eye. Ensuring adequate sleep can improve heart health. One study found that young and middle-age adults who regularly slept seven hours a night had less calcium in their arteries

Changes to diet, including eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein, can help you lose and maintain a healthy weight, improve cholesterol levels and reduce blood pressure — leading to a healthier heart. • Embrace physical activity. Regular moderate exercise is great for the heart. It can occur at the gym, playing with the kids or even taking the stairs at work. Brownsdale

The Village of Brownsdale was legally established on July 7th, 1856, although the first settlers came in the spring of 1855. At this time 3 Norwegian families filed claims to land. Here they built sod homes that measured 10 feet by 12 ft. which was the requirement at that time. The 3 families of the original settlers sold their claims and moved west in the spring of 1856. Among the first to come here in the spring of 1856 were the Brown brothers, Hosmer and Andrew. Only a trail ran east to west through town which they named Main Street. The road section north to south was called Mill St. because the Brown Brothers were setting up a saw mill on the South bank of the creek.
