A Special Supplement to the Mower County Shopper
Welcome! The Mower County Shopper is pleased to present our annual “This Fall” magazine. We hope you enjoy using this activities guide throughout the fall season to plan your family outings and special day trips. There are many fun, affordable activities in Austin and the surrounding communities for every member of the family. We are fortunate to live in an area rich in tradition, with so many communities eager to share their local bounty, great cuisine, and talent with all who visit. “This Fall” is published and produced by The Mower County Shopper and supported by the many businesses featured inside. On Page 15 you will find the very popular Question Page with one question about each of the advertisers. It’s fun to search for the answers and discover something new about each business. Answer all the ad questions correctly and fill out the entry form for a chance to win a great prize. Good luck to you and “Thank You” for your participation.

Paint the Town Pink 10 Years Strong! This fall The Hormel Institute’s Paint the Town Pink campaign will enter its 10th year. This milestone is only possible because of communities throughout southeastern Minnesota and beyond. Every year communities throughout the region, and the country, together hold hundreds of events to raise funds that support the innovative breast cancer research of The Hormel Institute. Over the past 9 years, over $1.77 million dollars has been raised. Each year has surpassed the last, with totals growing as more events are added and more communities take part – over $334,000 was raised in 2019! We are aiming for an ever greater amount from now through 2020 because the gifts ACCELERATE ANSWERS TO ALL CANCERS. The idea for Paint the Town Pink started in 2011 with the inaugural Austin Bruins Paint the Rink Pink hockey game, which included pink ice, custom jerseys, a sellout crowd - and brought in $23,000, 100% used to further cancer research. The next year, with the help of the

Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau board of directors, Paint the Rink Pink became Paint the Town Pink and more events joined in to raise money for breast cancer research at The Hormel Institute. Now, there are several annual events that have become as much a part of Paint the Town Pink as the Bruin’s Paint the Rink Pink game. Those include the Fishing for a Cure ice fishing tournament, Plunging for Pink polar plunge into the local lake, Smashing Cancer demolition derby, Strides for a Cure 5k run/walk, Hunt for a Cure pheasant hunt, and many more. Other communities and groups, like Greater Mower County Paint the Town Pink and the Dutchtown Jumpers have their own annual events, including barbeques, horseshoe tournaments, and bingo events, to raise funds throughout the year for Paint the Town Pink. Funds from Paint the Town Pink are used to support innovative breast cancer research projects at The Hormel Institute through seed grants given to researchers with new, exciting ideas to find answers to cancer. These projects are only possible because of the seed grants funded by PTTP. The projects explore new ideas to accumulate data so larger studies/larger grants can be possible. While it may be called “Pink” symbolizing breast cancer research, discoveries often can be used to further understanding of other cancers during the research studies. Each year, an ambassador from the community is chosen to be the face and the heart of Paint the Town Pink. These women know firsthand how important continued research is to finding new answers to cancer. 2019 Paint the Town Pink ambassador Maegan Siebe shares, ““Because of the Hormel Institute and research like this, I survived and became a mom. I have benefitted firsthand from cancer research. We have learned so much, but there is still so much more to do to save more lives.” Keep your eye out for more information on the 10th year of Paint the Town Pink as the winter season approaches – you won’t want to miss any of the exciting things The Hormel Institute and other groups have planned for this milestone year. This is the best year yet to get involved – every dollar, every cancer, every person matters. Thank you for supporting Paint the Town Pink! To get involved with Paint the Town Pink, contact Kathi Finley, PTTP Director, at gopttp@gmail.com or 507-460-0259.
