We carry out regular brand monitoring of our rubber boot brands. This data helps us understand how the competitive landscape and consumer behaviour are changing, so that we are able to develop our products and operations further.
Outdoor activities have gained more popularity in recent years, which has also had an impact on the rubber boot market. With more than 82% of Finns owning 1–2 pairs of boots, it’s safe to say that Finns really love their rubber boots.
AVID GARDENERS
wear their boots mainly for gardening and other outdoor chores. They often opt for affordable boots that are easy to slip on.
NATURE ENTHUSIASTS
wear their boots mostly at their summer houses or for walks in the forest. This group wants durable high-quality boots that are made in Finland.

Berner’s rubber boot brands are very well-known in Finland. According to the latest survey (Dentsu 08/2022), up to 90% of Finns know of Nokian Footwear and 70% know of Kontio and Hai. All of Berner’s rubber boot brands are in demand, but especially Nokian Footwear dominates the consumer preference and is a clear market leader in the rubber boot category.
The consumer perception of our brands is highly positive. Nokian Footwear and Kontio are seen as reliable, local, and timeless, while Hai boots are appreciated for their wide range of colours and suitability for local outdoor activities. Hai boots are also considered to be a Finnish classic.
SELECTION CRITERIA FOR CHILDREN’S RUBBER BOOTS
The children’s rubber boot market, in particular, is extremely competed, which results in the price becoming one of the deciding factors in the choice of product. However, consumers place an even higher value on good fit, durability, easy-to-put-on design and sturdiness.
These qualities are emphasised in the design of Nokian Footwear boots, which has helped the company to become a market leader in children’s rubber boots.

2023 is a real anniversary year for Berner’s iconic boot brands, and we are celebrating it all year round. We support our customers’ consumer marketing with comprehensive media support and store visibility, highlighting the anniversary and our new products.
In marketing communications, we tell the story of our 125year journey and share nostalgic moments from our past with consumers. At the same time, we continue to promote people’s well-being through our high-quality, responsible products and services. We want to enable a positive outdoor experience for everyone – both today and tomorrow.
The anniversary will begin with PR work at the beginning of the year. The year’s campaign visibility will be multichannel, from social media to outdoor advertising. The campaign will also land in shops and Berner’s own channels.
The anniversary will culminate in Saapaspäivä (National Boot Day) on 11 October! That’s when we all put boots on and go out – whatever the weather. Saapaspäivä will be particularly visible in our autumn 2023 marketing, both in social media channels and in nationwide advertising. There is also a comprehensive store marketing package available for Saapaspäivä.

The Design from Finland mark is a recognition of Finnish design work. 76% of Finnish consumers prefer to choose a product designed in Finland whenever possible*. All Berner footwear brands have been awarded the Design from Finland mark as recognition of unique Finnish design and product development. This important message that clearly influences buying behaviour will be communicated in every available media.
