The Bad 80’s Prom

Story By: Reanna Brock

Big hair, neon tights, oneshouldered sweaters, and feel good music; the Bad 80’s Prom is back for its annual appearance, though a few things are different this year. Get ready to walk in to a hair spray filled room of KHS students’ celebration of a past generation at this one night only dance on the KHS campus. In past, the 80’s dance

was held at the Humble civic center, so this year shall prove different with the location moved to the KHS commons. “I would rather it be at the civic center since it is nice to get away from school, but I’m sure it’ll still be a great dance.” Junior, Sara Claussen, said when asked what she thought of the change of venue. The location though, is

not all that has changed. If this is not your first year at KHS then you may recall that the 80’s dance is generally held early in the year, during first semester. Perhaps they were saving the best for last (with the exception of prom for seniors) by moving it back this year. The bad 80’s prom is known to be so much more than just an ordinary school dance.

The neon colors and swirling lights fueled a constant excitment, keeping the energy up all night long. There was even a great turn out and the cafeteria of KHS had a flashback to the stu-

A DJ stand provided lights and a request sheet for nearly any song that you could think of. Though most of the music played was more “our time”, there was a handful of 80’s classics that boomed from

the speakers. “There was no break in the fun, the whole time everyone was dancing and everyone looked so great, but I think getting ready for the dance was my favorite part,” Junior, Nelly Elnegary said when asked what she liked

tails, and much much more. the boys took on too-shortshorts, track jackets, and fur coats. However, above all else, the most commomnly seen accessories were neon sunglasses and sweatbands wraped around the forheads of many of the dance goers. “Even though the 80’s dance was in the school cafeteria, it was still the radest dance I’ve ever been to,” Senior Kristen Cain said.

Traffic In The Parking Lot “I’m usually stuck in morning traffic for a good 20 minutes. It really takes time out of my morning.”

- Junior Kayla Sampson “I live like 6 minutes away but I leave at 6:45 because I have to wait in so much traffic.” -Junior Morgan Hendriks There is definitely more ways that the school can decrease the amount of traffic. They could even build a second entrance. -Kelly Bisset It’s 7:20 and you still have not gotten into the parking lot. Every minute seems like it is taking forever. Finally, you turn into the parking lot right before the warning bell rings. Great, another tardy because of the morning traffic. The trip to and from school everyday can seem like hours because of all the traffic. Many wrecks occur in the parking lot because of this chaotic traffic of students racing home. Most students blame the fact that there is only one

entrance to the student parking lot. Sophomore, Cassidy Wheeler suggests, “Maybe we could open the

gate to the other entrance everyday to help the traffic flow more easily.” With all the homework students have every night along with extra activities, sleeping is hard to come by. Even so, it is even harder

when students have to leave their houses fifteen minutes earlier just to compensate for traffic. “I live like 6 minutes away, but I leave at 6:45 because I have to wait in so much traffic” Junior Morgan Hendriks said. Traffic seems to be a problem in the morning, so maybe leave a little bit earlier to avoid all the madness. When leaving after school, maybe skip talking with your friends for 10 minutes and get out to the parking lot quickly if you are in a hurry that day.

“We were talking one night on Xbox live about a project: Reach Out, and he wanted to locate a venue for it. So we talked about it for a bit, and decided to have it at Kpark. The next day during 5th period, we decided to make a last minute appointment with the principal there. But when we got there, we realized we had prepared no material to talk about, or any sort of speech. But somehow we managed to sit in an office with Mr. Cooper for an hour, pulling things off the top of our heads, and he agreed to let us use the school as a venue. It was a fun moment.” -Nigel Scopelitis

“We were pretty mischievous in 7th or 8th grade, and Max and I decided to shove an entire banana into a bottle of apple juice. When we did this, the banana created a vacuum and when air got through the sides, apple juice shot out faster than the speed of light, going about 20 feet in the air. We got a lot of nasty looks, but that is how we discovered science.” -Chris Collier

“Beautiful things have been said about Maximilian, and I’m so thankful that others have outlets like facebook posts and yearbook entries that can remind me of him. I have plenty of stories, ranging from highly embarrassing to exceedingly awkward, but I feel that they are personal treasures of mine, to be frank. Furthermore, no matter what I try to say, I’ll never be able to express the entirety of Maximilian. I spent the majority of my high school career trying to figure out what’s going on in that big head (literally and figuratively) and now none of us will ever fully know. I constantly fight with the reason why it happened, but for now I think the loss of such potential is merely inexplicable. I apologize to those who didn’t know him well, because those of us who did are struggling. It doesn’t get easier with time; it gets easier with acceptance, and each of us carry that burden differently. What commemoration he deserves, though we try, can never be achieved.” -Dani Maldonado

Maximilian Christopher Keevill In Loving Memory

“The first paper Max wrote for me was so stunning, so darkly lyrical, that I knew at once he was something extraordinary. Pieces of it are still seared into my memory. Who but Max would look at a picture of an electric chair and write ‘The back mimics the very bars by which its victims have been imprisoned, while straps search for their victims like carnivorous whips’? He had a gift with words, and a fearless, original way of looking at things that set him apart. After that first paper, I always read his essays last, like dessert.” -Ms. Lawrynovicz

“One time in Physics, Mrs. Ingle used the analogy of a teeter-totter to describe torque. Max, being Max, pretended that he had no clue what a teeter-totter was, saying that they did not exist in England. Mrs. Ingle played along, and it was our class-joke for the rest of the semester. It was one of the funniest things that ever happened in that class. The rest of the class couldn’t believe he pulled it off so well and with such a straight face.” -Jason Dayvault

“It was summertime and I was on swim team, Max texted me and offered to bring me something from smoothie king. I must have ordered something that had kiwi in it because he never let me live that one down! Little did I know he was allergic to kiwi and actually got a rash on his hand because he spilled a little on him. He never let me forget that and I surely never will!” -Emily Moran

“Freshman year, he and I shared a bus stop. When we got off of the bus we talked as we walked home. One day, he followed me all the way to my doorstep. I told him “Bye, Max” and he said “Can I come in?” I said, “No, Max. No one’s home.” He said “You shouldn’t have told me that...” with the creepiest face I’d ever seen. We then proceeded to laugh hysterically then said goodbye and he walked back home. I really will never forget that day.” -Marcela Saldaña

LEND ME A TENOR Students Courtney Woltjen, Robert Terry, Elise Rodriguez, and bellhop Joey Trammell perform in the Lend Me a Tenor performance.

T

he Kingwood High School Theater Department put on a performance of Lend Me A Tenor, a humorous play that made the whole audience laugh. This year, second semester, the Kingwood High School Theater Department put on a performance of Lend Me A Tenor on Feburary 5th, 6th, 9th, and 10th. Lend Me a Tenor is about a young man, Max, (Robert Terry) who filled in last minute, for the role of a famous Italian singer, Tito (Kyler Sommer), after Max found Tito “dead” on the bed with a suicide note in their hotel room. However, Tito was not dead, and Max performed in a play that Tito was supposed to perform in that night.

10 | Feature

The characters are then repeled into the complicated and hysterical love triangle as Maggie (Elise Rodriguez and Emma Hanes), Juilia (Courtney Woltjen and), the bellhop (Joey Trammell and Lucas Matteson) and Diana (Izzy Flake and Monica Brown) chase after their beloved Tito and Max. The plot is hysterical and the cast enjoyed performing such a funny play. “My favorite part about being in the play is making people laugh,” Junior Elise Rodriguez

said.

Rodriguez, whose, character is Maggie, is performing a lead part in a big production for the first time. “My character, Maggie, is the female lead who’s boyfriend is Max. She is not that different from me. She is really lovestruck,” Rodriguez said. After all of the hard work and practing, being in the play is exciting to many of the actors and actresses. “It gets really nerve-wracking and exciting,” Rodriguez said.

LEND ME A TENOR Getting a part in the play is very competitive and these students worked hard to earn their places. “Eighty people tried out for this play. But as Mr. Chuter says, he puts in the people he knows will work hard and who are the most willing to be corrected,” Senior Lauren Phillips said. The students must be able to take direction well, and easily make changes to the their acting. “If your cast is practicing, you get to listen to Mr. Chuter‘s corrections and employ them,” Phillips said. The students spent hours and hours at the school practicing for the play. “People probably think it isn’t fun being at the school all the time, but it really is. I love all the people,” Rodriguez said. The actors and actresses are not the only people who work hard to make the play possible. Students also work hard behind stage and on backdrops and costumes. “I am in communications. It is very organized and systematic. You have to be focused all the time,” Junior April Tillinghast said. Backstage is hectic, but the students enjoy it. They have to be focused all the time so they do not miss a cue. “It’s crazy, but in a good way. You never stop working,” Tillinghast said. Altogether, the play was a success and everyone enjoyed watching it.

Max (Robert Terry) wakes up in the morning to find the famous Tito Merelli dead, (or seemingly dead), on his bed in the morning. Max and Mr. Saunders are then launched into a ironic frenzie trying to find someone to fill in for Tito at the performace he was going to participate in that evening. Tito Merelli (Kyle Sommer) and Max (Robert Terry) stand back to back after a gaggle of girls chase after them. The girls do not know that there are two Titos running around, and they do not know that one Tito is really Max. Tito and Max are also unaware of each others presence.

Story by Sydne Steward & Photos by Ryan Lerman

Diana (Monica Brown and Izzy Flake) and Tito Morelli (Kyle Sommer) flirt on the couch at the hotel room. Tito, confused, does not understand why Diana is flirting with him, because she was previously flirting with Max, who looked just like Tito. Diana herself did not know the difference between Max and Tito.

Ever wonder why you can’t get that girl you have your eyes set on? Or maybe you can’t even get a date with her. Don’t let that bring down your self esteem. Maybe you just need some helpful advice or tips. Your faults could be anything from fashion, attitude, interests, don’t talk enough or talk to much. If you want a girl, you need to jump off the video games, put away W.O.W. and talk to someone. If you just start texting a girl, don’t talk to her like your in love with her. Talk to her like you are her best friend. And don’t, I repeat DON’T text her 24/7. It gets annoying. When around a girl you should “Treat her like a diamond. Or something else of high value” freshman Camron Stitt said. You need to be nice but not excessively kind, and “You need to always treat her with respect”, Assistant Principal Mr. Rosenberg said. To make the girl think about you, “just be really sweet. Take her somewhere expensive. make sure you run into her every where” junior Danny Farrar said. Before you ask this special woman out, please make sure she likes you. Just don’t be a total nub and you should do fine ;)

"We're done, over, I need space, it's not me it's you, let's take a break from each other and see how things go." These were the last words Billy kindly told his soon to be ex-girlfriend, Sally. She cried and cried, but in the back of her mind all she could think of was what she had done wrong, why did he break up with her when they had only been dating for just 10 days? Was it her exaggerated laugh, her trust issues, her constant want to be with him and all up in his business, her variation of moods that changed in a blink, her look, her clothes, or just her smell? Every girl has done something wrong in a relationship and never known why, but now they can learn from Sally's mistakes and see what really pushes boys' buttons.

oh, my!

Combining old fashion trends with the new has created a combination of two different clothing. Jean Leggings, “jeggings,” combine to form a more comfortable pair of pants. Health & Fitness

Health Monitor

By Sydne Steward and Kaitlyn Beckert Spring time is rolling around, and everyone’s new years resolutions are fading fast. This is a perfect time of year to undertake “low-cost” beneficial workouts and healthy routines that not only affect your internal organs, but your body as well. As they say, beauty and health come from within.

Fitness

Buy a few hand held weights, a jump rope, or resistance tubing.

Health and FittnesswithTips Theses tips are just for the average person. Things such as diet, hydration and health history will make health tips different for everyone.

For a low cost workout, fill up a gallon milk jug halfway full with water and use as a weight

Drink 4-5 ounces of water every twenty minutes. Drink more when in heat or not previously hyrdrated.

Gym or No Gym The body doesn’t know if you’re using nice machines or homemade machines.

You can get professional advice at the gym.

Ms. Lard

Gyms can provide social time and you have more support.

At home you can get distracted and talk yourself out of working out.

Eat three small meals a day and three snacks.

At home, it is more private and cost effective. You can also make it more of a family event.

Before You Exercise Eat plenty of protein and carbs.

Health The more you excercise, the more calories you need.

Get well hydrated and drink lots of water.

If you get thirsty, this means you were already thirsty.

26 | Health and Fitness

Try to stay away from eating a huge meal.

A person gets water from food, such as meat and fruit.

Gatorade is a good source while excercising, because it re-hydrates you after sweating.

How much calories you consume varies on a persons BMR, or how well they metabolize.

T he doors fly open as an

aura of intensity smacks you in the face, ipod blasting in your ears, it’s time to work. Maybe today is a cardio day, or an upper body day, either way, it all starts with one of two things: The gym you go to and the diet you follow...

Junior Michael Bolls

Junior Michael Bolls and Junior Harrison Schnepp often work out together.

Gyms of Kingwood

When looking for a gym you need to look at three things, the first one is gym benefits and the second is equipment. “I prefer Golds over any other gym because of the reliable equipment that doesn’t break, and the gym benefits. AKA the ladies,” said Junior Michael Bolls. Some people like to swim to exercise. “I prefer the YMCA over any other gym in Kingwood because the Y is the only one that has a pool,” Junior Connor Grant said. Others like to run after or before they workout. “Personally, I like Lifetime Fitness because of the indoor track and their weights area, it gives me the perfect mixture of running and lifting plus they also have their own smoothie bar”, Junior Tyler Waterman said. Every gym has its pros and cons with equipment and benefits. Another thing you should look at is how much you pay for different gym benefits. “$25-$30 a month is a really good price for a gym, I pay $25 a month at Golds, and I get access to all of their exercise classes. I can get a personal trainer if I want. They also have tanning beds and a sauna room,” Bolls said.

By Luke Taylor

Different people have different reasons for choosing their gym. “I go to the Ymca and I pay $33 a month, and I believe I get what I pay for because the Y has basketball courts and soccer fields, plus they have yoga classes and biking classes,” Grant said. Some think Lifetime Fitness is better. “At Lifetime I pay $45 a month but it is well worth it because of all of the different workout equipment and different things that they have there” Waterman said. The third and final key element in a gym that needs to be looked at is the environment that the gym provides. Is it a family gym, or more of an old school gym? “I go to Golds gym because of the old school body builder feeling that the gym provides. There are a lot of great guys that go there and will help you with a spot whenever you need it,” Bolls said. Some prefer a family atmosphere. “The Ymca has a very family friendly environment and everyone is really friendly to me and it makes me feel at home”, Junior Harrison Schnepp said. Others look at the professionalizm of the staff at a gym. “Lifetime fitness has very profesional environment and a futuristic gym feeling and it makes me feel calm when I workout,” Waterman said.

GYM TAN LAUNDRY

I go fake tanning every two weeks to keep up my summer glow
