The most impacting moment for me was when a paramedic asked me about my family. That moment snapped me back into reality and made me realize drinking and driving can effect not only the victims but the families. -Morgan Lee, Freshman

Shattered Dreams

Story by Evan Goldman Photos by Chris Solis

Shattered Dreams informed students of the dangers and pointless risks of drunk driving. Every 15 minutes the sound of a heart beat would burst through the high school PA system, symbolizing a death in Texas due to driving drunk. When the heartbeat sounded, a grim reaper was sent into the room to claim the “soul” of a classmate. Then a teacher read an obituary written by the selected students parents, sending people within radius into disillusioned shock. The audio video department created a visually stunning representation of a group of teenagers brutally victimized by their own reckless decision to drink and drive. Finally on wednesday, the climax of the movement, Speeches crafted with care and heartache by survivors, fellow students and faculty members who have been affected by these tragedies.

Q: Why do you think Shattered Dreams will have an impact on the students of KHS? Morgan Lee: Shattered Dreams will have an impact on KHS because of how personal it was this year. The hospital scene showed very raw, real emotion which I think the students can respond to. Q: What was the most impacting moment during filming? NHS Benefit Concert

On Friday, April 25th, many students came out to a concert held by the National Honor Society. There were a wide range of performers, from student groups to Old Skool, a teacher’s only group featuring KHS teachers Mr. Salinas, Mr. Savage, and Mr. Scalia. Not only were students able to have fun, but they were also able to support a great cause. The proceeds from the concert went to an orphanage in Honduras called Casa Cielo. This orphanage helps poverty-stricken orphans who have been malnourished, neglected, and abused. The founders and volunteers have built schools for these children and have raised them like their own. NHS Presidnet, Robyn Marshall chose Casa Cielo, a non-profit organization and at the concert alone NHS was able to raise over $6000. If you would like to learn more or help out, visit www. casaderoc.org.

Challenge Day

Challenge day was a day of overcoming the challenges students face in the form of judgment and feelings of selfconciousness. All students were welcome to be involved, and everyone who signed up participated in a series of games and activities to build confidence. One particpant, Jessica Campbell said the best activity was one called, “Cross the Line,” and that it, “is where they call out a situation and if it applies to you, you cross the line. It just opens your eyes to the troubles everone faces.” Another student, Tucker Eberling agress that it was the best event and says, “it opened [his]mind and he realized that no one is alone.” Besides learning about the struggles that everyone faces, many students formed new friendships through the day. SPRING SPORTS... Kingwood Soccer Story By Amy Ledbetter This year, Kingwood soccer has been doing quite well. Sophomore varsity soccer player, Alexis Arredondo gives us the scoop, “Varsity made it to play-offs this year at Turner, which was our original goal.” Unfortunately, Kingwood did not win at play-offs but soccer is keeping a positive attitude. “Our midfield has been pretty strong this year, and we are really greatful for that.” Ian Nielsen, 10. Soccer has been striving for perfection recently and it really shows in their attitude and accomplishments.“Our team is one big family,” says freshman soccer player Sarah Vogel, “We all share really good chemistry and we are always supporting each other.” Getting along has been the team’s strongest point this year. The team will keep up the great sportsmanship and continue to play hard.

Tennis Regionals This 2014 tennis season was very successful! To finish it off, the Varsity Tennis Team sent two players, Jonathan Hsu and Abby Csengry, to play at Regionals in Waco. Freshman Abby Csengry enjoyed playing in Waco and said “It was a good experience as a freshman to play in a big high school tournament like Regionals”. The tennis team also took players Jennie Larson (Senior), Gabe Yank (Junior), Alex Nazzal (Senior), and Hannah Davitt (Sophomore), Allie Jackson (Junior) to cheer on their teammates! Senior Jennie Larson said “It was an exciting event to be a part of as I finished my last year in tennis here at Kingwood.” Alex Nazzal, also a senior, said “I enjoyed watching my teammates and seeing a lot of talent in my last year ”. Going to Regionals was a huge success and a good opportunity for players to participate in and watch. Gabe Yank, Junior, said “It was real fun to watch different people play and see good strategies!”. Congrats to all the players who got to take part in this fun experience to finish the 2014 season!

Mustang Baseball wrapped up their season a few weeks ago, losing 5-1 to Bryan. After a rocky start to the season, the Mustangs had a big win over the defending state champs, the Woodlands. Kingwood finished 4th in District 13-5 A with a record of 11-5. With signature wins over Klein and rival, Atascosita, the Mustangs made the playoffs yet again. The Mustangs lost 2 straight games to Bryan in the first round, eliminating them from the playoffs to end their season. Overall it was a great season Mustangs!
