Saving'the'Rhinos
Starring'Eli,'a'Poacher,'and'a'Rhino
I'went'to'the'savanna'in'Africa.'I'was'on'a'mission'to'save'a'rhino.'As'I'went'on'my'journey,' I'ran'into'a'poacher.''He'was'after'the'rhino.'He'was' not'going'to'kill'the'rhino,'but'he'was'going'to'take' the'rhino’s'horns.' I'challenged'the'poacher'to'a'race.'We'agreed'that' whoever'won'the'race'could'do'whatever'they' wanted'with'the'rhino.''So'if'the'poacher'won,'he' would'take'the'horns,'but'if'I'won,'I'would'save'the' rhino.''The'poacher'accepted'the'challenge.''Now,' it’s'a'race'between'the'poacher'and'me.''So'the'race' is'on.' As'the'race'began,'I'ran'next'to'the'lakes.''It'was' risky'because'the'lakes'had'alligators'in'them.'' While'I'was'running,'I'had'to'pass'an'alligator'sitting' on'a'log'next'to'the'lake.''I'saw'that'his'teeth'were'sharp.''As'he'opened'his'mouth,'I'saw'a'dead' animal'in'his'belly.''As'I'ran'past'him,'he'moved'towards'me'and'tried'to'eat'me,'but'I'jumped' right'past'him.''Finally,'I'made'it'past'the'lakes. Next,'I'ran'through'tall'grass.''I'kept'running'through'the'tall'grass'even'though'it'made'me' itchy. 'I'heard'a'screech'in'the'tall'grass.'It'was'a'hyena.' I'said'to'myself,'“Run!”' The'hyena'blocked'my'path.''He'looks'like'a'dog'with'nasty'teeth.''I'decided'to'try'to'juke' him'out'as'the'poacher'who'had'no'time'for'games'ran'right'past.' I'felt'bad'because'I'was'now'losing'the'race.' Then'I'heard'thunder'and'saw'lighting.''The'hyena'ran'off,'and'I'continued'the'race.''During' the'height'of'the'storm,'the'poacher'found'shelter.''As'I'ran'past'the' shelter,'I'heard'a'big'bang.''The'tree'near'the'shelter'fell'down,'and' the'path'was'blocked.''The'poacher'had'to'Lind'a'new'path'in'order' to'continue'the'race.''' After'the'storm'was'all'over,'I'race'to'the'Linish'line.'I'got' there'before'him,'so'I'won'the'race.''As'the'poacher'crossed'the' Linish'line,'he'came'over'to'me,'shook'my'hand'and'said,'“You’re'a' good'runner.''I'will'honor'my'end'of'the'bargain.''The'rhino'is' yours.”' I'called'the'zoo'and'asked'them'to'come'get'the'rhino,'so'he' wouldn’t'be'hunted'anymore.' How are rhinos different from people?

Rhinos eat branches, from small trees and bushes. The rhinos love to eat grass. People eat all kinds of food like meat, vegetables and fruit. People are omnivores. The rhinos are herbivores. People have little teeth compared to Rhinos who have bigger, sharper teeth.

The females Rhinos and female humans protect their babies. The baby Rhino is called a calf. Rhino babies weigh about twelve pounds, and people babies weigh about five to eight pounds.

Black rhinos have two horns to dig for their food. People buy food at the grocery store.

Black rhinos can run 40 mph. Now, that’s pretty fast! People run everywhere like parks, tracks, and playgrounds.

Black rhinos are endangered some black rhinos are very rare. The poachers watch the rhinos. The poachers hunt for rhinos and take their horns. The poachers use a knife to cut off the horns to make a horn handle. Freeing the black rhinos from the poachers is very important. People need to take care of the black rhinos. Page 13
