MEWBOURNE SCHOOL OF PETROLEUM AND GEOLOGICAL ENGINEERING

Mission The mission of the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering is to provide our students with educational experiences which allow them the opportunity to develop technical competence and intellectual perspective to function effectively in and continue professional growth during their careers. These experiences occur primarily through research, innovative classroom instruction, lab experiences, and student mentoring.

Academic & Student Life

Students are the lifeblood of any institution, and, within the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering, we are dedicated to preparing them for success and to carry on our tradition of excellence. Enrollment for the 2015-16 school year

National Merit enrollment in MPGE has nearly tripled.

From the start of petroleum engineering at OU, we have been fortunate to have global representation, which has enhanced our programs and the experiences of our students. Forty nations were represented amongst our undergraduate population this past year. China and Saudi Arabia remain at the top, but, this year, Angola has come in as the nation with the third highest representation, which pushes South Korea into fourth. The East Asian region makes up 34% of our international population, with the Middle East and North Africa region in second at 26%. MPGE’s female population remained at 14%. While this is still down from previous years, it hasn’t dropped any lower. With new initiatives to attract more women to engineering programs at OU and outreach within MPGE, this number is certain to rise. 3

Scholarships

Sending a child to university places a lot of stress upon a family. MPGE tries to reduce some of that through the awarding of scholarships. For 2015-16, 248 MPGE students were awarded at total of $884,000 in scholarship funds. None of this would have been possible without the unfailing support and generosity of our alumni and industry friends. Thank you! Scholarship decisions are rooted in

Graduate Programs

MPGE has continued to grow and expand its graduate programs. This year, a fully-online master’s program was begun in Natural Gas Engineering and Management. It mirrors the current oncampus program, yet, allows students to continue and grow their careers without disruption. For those who would like to expand their prospects within the natural gas industry, a graduate certificate program in natural gas technology was also launched and is offered both online and on-campus. These new programs are unique and allow to the University of Oklahoma to carry on its pioneering tradition. 10

Graduation & Placement

In 1919, the first bachelor’s in Geological Engineering was granted by OU. Since that time, nearly 6,000 bachelor’s degrees have been awarded in petroleum and geological engineering at OU. The Class of 2016 carries with it our tradition of excellence. During the 2015-16 academic year, MPGE

making up 17% of the graduating class. Sixteen international students, also, completed their undergraduate degrees in petroleum engineering during this past academic year. In spite of facing a challenging hiring environment, 56% of our undergraduate students had secured employment or accepted an offer for graduate school upon graduation. For those who chose to pursue further education, half were seeking degrees in petroleum or another engineering discipline and another quarter were enrolling in business programs. Mewbourne Oil Company in Tyler, Texas hired the largest segment of MPGE students followed by Schlumberger and Pioneer and Saudi Aramco, Shell, Kuwait Oil Company and Apache. The average starting salary for 2016 B.S. graduates is $77,000, with 33% receiving an additional signing bonus.

We are always pleased when the service and dedication our faculty give to their profession is recognized and awarded. Assistant Professor Maysam Pournik was recognized for his talent in teaching by being named Outstanding Faculty of the Year by OU’s Student Government Association. This prestigious award comes directly from the student body; just to be nominated is a great honor. Pournik arrived at OU in 2010. He has taken each opportunity presented to learn how to teach better. He has integrated digital learning within his courses, and is always willing to discuss 29

questions students have. In addition to teaching, Pournik, also, serves as a faculty advisor to our students. He places just as much care and attention towards ensuring students are on the right path to graduate on time as he does in his classes.

MPGE was also honored to have Student Relations Coordinator, Francey Freeman, awarded the 2016 Waintroob/Myers Superior Performance Award by OU’s Informational Staff Association. This award recognizes her fifteen years of dedication to OU’s students and community. Francey has been with MPGE since 2005 and serves as staff advisor to OU SPE, OU AADE and Pi Epsilon Tau.

Research

MPGE continued its tradition of producing strong research. During FY 2016, our research expenditures reached $5,173,206, giving us a fifth place rank at OU. Averaging $345,000 per primary investigator, MPGE ranks first among OU’s engineering programs and second within the university. We are especially proud to have 75% of our faculty participating in research programs at OU, including three who are ranked within the top ten (Ahmad Ghassemi, Chandra Rai and Carl Sondergeld).
