new home for old memories is the theme for the Botanica Carousel Project. Accepting the challenge of restoring the Joyland MerryGo-Round has grown into a huge, delicate task. Built in 1949 the 67 year old merry-go-round is being painstakingly restored, layer by layer and piece by piece. To our knowledge there are only five merry-gorounds of this type remaining in existence. Preserving this beautiful, nostalgic piece of history will cause many of us to remember the wonderful times we had riding the horses and will create new memories of joy and laughter for many others. When Margaret Nelson Spear donated this Wichita treasure to Botanica we instantly went to work planning for the restoration process. Then we went through a selection process and chose WDM Architects to design a building that will house the carousel and complement the gardens. The design process has been completed and a capital campaign has begun to raise $3.6 million for the carousel project and other westward expansion of Botanica. The Botanica Carousel Project is a community project. We invite everyone to help with the project, relive their memories and share the carousel with generations to come. To raise funds, naming opportunities are available for the carousel building and 27 different recognition items. Please refer to www.botanica.org or stop by and pick up the funding and design booklet. We still

have horses that can be purchased; donor recognition plaques will be placed next to each horse on the carousel floor. In June Botanica celebrated the 5th anniversary of the Downing Children’s Garden. The children’s garden was designed to promote activities where adults and children participate together. It was the beginning of Botanica’s reinvention process, and the carousel will be another phase of that process. We have reinvented Botanica to be a family place where memories are made, and everything we do in the future will be focused on family and making memories. I cannot begin to express my appreciation to all who have supported Botanica. We live in a great city, and Botanica has become one of those special places that we all can be proud of. I want to thank each and every one of you for making it possible for Botanica to grow. THANK YOU,

reetings from the Gardens! Fall is in the air at Botanica even with the daytime temperatures still warm. Shorter days and cooler nights hold promise of our seasonal change into fall. In our tropical waterlilies this season we have two Longwood Hybrid Victories. We received them about a month later than normal this year due to seed crop failures so they have been slow to bloom and are not as big as most years. They complete our collection just by their uniqueness and size of leaf and flower. I love seeing them in the pond.

for their help securing 20 Hosta varieties that are new to the garden, some hardy ferns and three new Japanese Maples. Their donation of the plants and their installation rounded off the rest of the landscape around the building and gave the area back the feeling of a garden. I would also like to thank Mike DeRee and the Ball Seed Company for donating 120 summer annuals from their trial beds. The top three of the 38 varieties in my opinion are Coleus ‘Flame Thrower Habanero’, Bidens ‘Bee Alive’ and Coleus ‘Flame Thrower Chili Pepper’. Look for these plants on your next visit to the gardens and at your garden centers next spring.

Australian Waterlilies On another note, the new outdoor restroom landscape has taken great shape this summer and has gone a long way to blend the building into the garden landscape. I again would like to thank the Wichita Hosta Society 4

Beginning mid-September, we will be planting 5,500 chrysanthemums consisting of 21 varieties in various shades of six colors. They bring the gardens to life again with large patches of new vibrant colors. We then will begin planting 10,000 pansies around the rose beds, in perennial beds and in and around the pansy house for winter color throughout the gardens. As autumn progresses, our fall display usually starts showing color in late September, reaching its peak in mid-

October. Personally, this is my favorite time of year in the gardens. The summer annuals have reached their mature size and fall display has replaced the tired, summer-stressed annuals, displaying new vibrant colors. Trees and shrubs are beginning to color up and the chill in the air invites you to visit the gardens often. In your own garden, remember that September is a great time to plant asters, snapdragons, mums, pansies, cabbage and kale to fill color voids. October is time to transplant peonies. Be careful not to plant the eyes (the growing buds) no more than one inch below the surface or they will not bloom. November is time to plant bulbs like tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocus. I would like to thank our three summer gardening interns. Josie Riggs and Ben Ira (seniors in Landscape Design) and Bruce Moore (a sophomore in Landscape Design) have all returned to Kansas State Coleus Flame Thrower University to further their education. All of these students endured the hottest part of summer. Each had a great attitude and did a super job on their assigned garden teams and areas. Thank you from all of us for spending your summer at Botanica. We also had Michelle Martin and Lynne Snodgrass on our summer garden staff. They have both returned to teaching positions this fall. We thank both of them for

enduring the heat of the summer and doing a great job with a great attitude. We wish all our summer gardeners the best and thank them for everything they have done for Botanica.

In closing this article, I can never say thank you enough to all the garden staff and volunteers for everything you do for Botanica. You have all done a remarkable job and are appreciated more than words can ever express. So as we finish the rest of this year, know you have my deepest gratitude and respect. I would like to personally invite everyone to visit the gardens this fall and consider volunteering in the gardens. We work hard, but most of the volunteers say it’s a great social activity and enjoy what they learn and accomplish. The cooler Bidens Bee Alive weather of fall brings three Weed and Feed opportunities on the first Tuesday of each month, along with planting days for mums, pansies and 60,000 tulip bulbs. There is also the setup of Illuminations, so there are plenty of volunteering opportunities. Our volunteers help to plant and maintain all that you see in the gardens and they have a great time doing it. I thank them for all they contribute and again invite you to visit the gardens often this fall as a guest or volunteer.

We turn the light on from 5:30pm to 8:30pm every day from November 25 to December 31 (excluding Christmas Eve and Christmas Day). You’ve heard about it, now see it to believe it. Tour themed gardens, hear live music and visit Santa every night. And don’t forget you can eat dinner on the pavilion with hot chocolate and s’mores! Illuminations transforms every single garden area into a different themed holiday display or uniquely lit botanical setting. Larger than life lit flowers and bugs are placed throughout the gardens. An oversized fish and ocean setting is placed in the Butterfly Garden. The pond and our fountains have floating lit giant trees that dance to music. Santa is here every single night visiting and taking pictures with all of the children. Candy Cane Lane, Candy Land and starfield projector shows are huge hits. We have a traditional light show to beautiful music that is installed in our main meadow. The Children’s Garden meadow Transforms into a whimsical video, light and musical extravaganza with a video board the size of a drive-in theater screen. The Children’s Garden brings smiles to young and old with lit monster trees, fairy lights in the musical maze and fun holiday creatures lighting up every corner. Live carolers and music groups come out every single night to entertain. Hot drinks, dinner and treats are sold throughout the gardens and on weekends, an adult hot toddy bar is available as well.

We will also have Frosty the Snowman serve custard from Freddy’s Frozen Custard after storytime with Santa. otanica is proud to partner with Wichita’s Littlest Heroes. This is a small but quickly growing grass roots collection of dedicated, committed parents, businesses and organizations in our community with the mission to inspire life-long relationships between Hero children and families who are fighting life-threatening medical battles through fun and free events. Wichita’s Littlest Heroes is the vision, and now the successful reality, founded by Brianna Coffey. Littlest Heroes is not only helping other little heroes and their families, it is helping to bring community together. The organization was formed in 2014 after Brianna’s son Triston was diagnosed with a very rare and life-threatening auto-immune disease. Brianna built relationships with other parents, coping with their own child’s challenges. She realized the little heroes, themselves, hanging out together at a hospital for treatment were bonding and supporting each other regardless of their own diagnosis. It carried over to parents supporting each other with encouragement and coping through day-to-day struggles.

Today there are over 70 Heroes enrolled with Wichita’s Littlest Heroes programs and activities, with a growing list of community partners. Brianna explains, “These diseases have created incredible obstacles for families to survive. The hoops, medical forms and financial challenges they must cope with are enough to split up families causing irreparable harm with no return to normalcy.” Wichita’s Littlest Heroes has established resources that help families cope physically and emotionally to make their journey a little easier. Botanica is supporting Wichita’s Littlest Heroes by providing family memberships to each of the families. All of us at Botanica hope our community’s Littlest Heroes have the opportunity to explore the Downing Children’s Garden, their parents take a soothing walk through the gardens to re-energize, or for the entire family to share the gardens for the healing process in a time of need. Botanica and Whole Foods Market are partnering for Community Giving Day on Wednesday, September 21st. There are two great ways you can support Botanica. If you are a customer who reuses bags to save paper, consider donating your credit to Botanica. Whole Foods Market gives customers a 10-cent credit for bringing your own shopping bags. On Wednesday September 21st, we have Botanica Community 5% Day, which is a meaningful way Whole Foods gives back to our community. A total of 5% of the day’s net sales are donated to Botanica. A New Home for Old Memories

estoration of the Joyland Merry-GoRound continues. At this writing we are only 8 horses away from completing the team needed for the carousel. The excitement builds as horses are purchased and the spectacularly restored carousel horses gallop their way into Botanica’s main entrance. Knowing what was once a community tradition, loved by all, the desire of owners Stanley and Margaret Nelson will live on for generations. As owner Margaret Nelson Spear said so eloquently, “My desire for the carousel is that it be restored and function for the enjoyment of my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and children of all ages in the Wichita community as a reminder of the amusement park thrills that once were.”

Owner of Custom Carving and Restoration, Marlene Irvin continues to work on the restoration of the Joyland carousel horses. It is a project that is very close to her, recalling memories as a child riding the merry-go-round. “Every kid my age was there to ride the carousel. I love being able to imagine what the original carvers and artists wanted and then have the opportunity to bring their goals and dreams back to life.”

Festival of the Monarch

Sunday, September 25th, 1:00pm-4:00pm At the festival, children will become a monarch and travel along the migration path participating in games, activities, art and music. After they have migrated, they will arrive in ‘Mexico’ and enjoy a Mexican fiesta! Families will enjoy temporary tattoos, live music and a predator obstacle course. Children will also have an up close experience watching a wild monarch being tagged. Once tagged the children will receive information on how to track their monarch while it migrates from Kansas to Mexico. Wing wearing is strongly encouraged! General admission $7 or Members $3.

Elsie Neumann Monarch Waystation

Get inspiration for your garden this fall by visiting the Neumann Monarch Waystation during peak migration, the last few weeks of September. Volunteer, Elsie Neumann, established the garden in 2013 and had it certified through Monarch Watch as a conservation garden in 2015.
