FROM THE DIRECTOR A DECADE AT BOTANICA In February of 2008, I accepted the position of Executive Director at Botanica. It has been an honor to be part of an organization that has grown from a mere neighborhood garden into a major community attraction. Since 2007, the total attendance has grown 144% to 231,542 visitors in 2017. Over the years, the hard work of volunteers, staff and the Botanica Board of Trustees has helped keep the Botanica vision in sight. Our accomplishments over this decade include the following: the Woodland Bird Garden, the Downing Children’s Garden, the Gene Spear Train Garden, Lotus Hall, the Chinese Garden of Friendship, Pavilion improvements, new garden restrooms and refurbishing the main building and lobby. Also playing a huge role in the growth of Botanica are developments of our special events such as Tulips Fairies and Forts, BOOtanica, Blooms Brews and Bloody Marys, Tuesdays on the Terrace and Vine. Our holiday light show, Illuminations, has become a major family event in our region. None of these wonderful accomplishments could have happened without our members and donors who have supported Botanica financially over the years. Botanica has provided me with the opportunity to achieve immense job satisfaction through making people happy. The gardens have a mystical power that causes children to smile, couples to make promises and families to create strong bonds. Experiences at Botanica create memories that last a lifetime! The next 10 years will see the completion of the highly anticipated Botanica Carousel. The carousel will include beautiful gardens surrounding the carousel building and a grand lawn that will attract thousands of visitors to view special attractions taking place there. Also on the drawing board are a new French Garden that will include an outdoor ice skating rink beside a 28 foot replica of the Eiffel Tower and a garden that will reveal the culture of Mexico in a beautiful setting. These new gardens will provide guests with different cultural experiences, a glimpse into history, and will represent Wichita’s Sister Cities. I express my gratitude to all those who work tirelessly to create the best guest experiences at Botanica. It is our guests who keep Botanica growing and it is their smiles that make our bottom line. This is our true mission, which could not be met without our fabulous volunteers, dedicated staff and generous donors. Botanica can only grow and remain a top-notch community attraction with your continued support.

In Bloom March marks the official start of Botanica’s spring show. In the next 12 weeks, minor bulbs and early daffodils get our spring season started. By the time the last daffodil blooms, we should have had over 125,000 blossoms gracing our landscape. In the midst of our daffodil season, the 60,000 tulips we planted last fall will explode bright colors across the gardens. The tulips consist of 101 varieties, 27 never grown at Botanica before. Ten thousand pansies planted last fall continue to bloom and serve as great companion plants to reduce the color void between the spring bulbs and the establishment of the summer annuals. Along with all the spring flowering trees, shrubs and perennials as background support, we are expecting a beautiful spring display. "Daffodil Elegance" Rick McPherson

to grow in sunny locations with well-drained soil. Botanica has 115 varieties with my favorite being ‘Coral Charm’, although the yellow varieties like ‘Yellow Crown’ run a very close second.

Coral Charm Peony

Within all of the spring flowering trees, redbuds have always been first to signal spring’s arrival. Redbuds are tough, drought-tolerant trees that seem to be everywhere in Kansas. Botanica has 12 different redbuds with my favorite being ‘Forest Pansy’ with its dark burgundy foliage. Flowering shrubs soften the spring landscape and provide brilliant backdrops in the landscape. The one most people associate with spring is the lilac. Lilacs have an enchanting, intoxicating fragrance that heralds the arrival of spring. They are hardy shrubs that thrive for years in the garden and are remarkably easy to grow. Botanica has 16 different lilacs with my favorite being ‘Sensation’. This variety has purple flowers with each petal edged in white. Spring brings a host of perennial flowers to us in many forms, including phlox, columbine and irises. However, the queen of May flowers is the peony. Few herbaceous plants rival the peony for floral display and foliage. Their exquisite large, fragrant blossoms cover the entire plant in color and make excellent cut flowers. They are easy

Thank you,

Greetings from the gardens and welcome to spring. March, April and May return spring to us like a long lost friend. Even if it is cold outside today, you anxiously await the warm embrace of spring with its bright splashes of color across the landscape.

I can never express enough the gratitude I feel for the garden staff and volunteers for all their endless hours of dedication and hard work. Thank you to each of you and take pride in knowing what you do is why Botanica is here. As I end this article, I invite each of our readers to bring a friend and visit the gardens weekly over the next three months. Each visit you make will introduce you to new varieties of plants and broad splashes of color, so visit often and enjoy!

Annuals have helped Botanica carve a niche in the garden world. They allow us to offer large displays of color throughout the growing season. Annuals come in nearly every shade of bloom color with multiple varieties having foliage color as well. We achieve heights of 12’-15’ over one season down to 1” ground covers and vines, thus allowing us to divide our spaces and create a “wow” effect around every corner. By mid April through May we will be installing 25,000 summer annuals throughout the gardens. Come discover the newest annuals we found in catalogs and magazines this past winter in our beds and 105 containers. The Kansas Pond Society will again spend Saturday, April 7 dividing Botanica’s water lily collection. This is a huge undertaking and the garden crew greatly appreciates the help. The public is invited to attend and observe or help if they like. Botanica reaps the benefit of getting our entire collection done in one morning and they are a great group of people to work with. I cannot thank them enough for what they do for Botanica’s aquatic collection. Photo by Matthew McKernan

Recap Illuminations is our biggest fundraiser but it is also so much more. We get the chance to give back to our community we love so much. We give thousands of tickets to kids and families to join us in making memories over the holiday season. We team up with community partners including Wichita’s Littlest Heroes, Rainbows United, Boys & Girls Club of South Central Kansas, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Wichita Children’s Home, Child Advocacy Center, Food Bank, Stuff the Truck with Operation Holiday and reward Title 1 school students who participate in the “I Earned It” program. We broke a record this year on attendance with 82,454. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers, sponsors, attendees and community partners. “Botanica was the first local sponsor to step up and do something huge and healing for Wichita’s Littlest Heroes. Your partnership has touched and changed so many lives with our group. We have moms who go alone just to get some peace, parents who watch their child run through the gardens when they weren't running last year, and provided moments for our families to be together outside of all the sickness. Thank you just doesn't seem quite adequate, but I hope knowing the hundreds of smiles you created this Christmas will warm your heart. Botanica will always have our Hero hearts!!!!” -Brianna Coffey, Wichita’s Littlest Heroes “Illuminations at Botanica is spectacular and is one of the ‘must experience’ events in Wichita. So proud to have Illuminations in our community! The partnership Rainbows has with Botanica has been so beneficial to the children and families we serve. By hosting infant playgroups, therapy sessions and field trips at Botanica, we are able to provide a multi-sensory experience for children with special needs. We are truly grateful for this opportunity.” -Angela Kessler, Rainbows United, Inc. “The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Kansas and the families we serve are truly appreciative for the donated tickets that allow our families to enjoy one of Wichita’s iconic traditions, Illuminations. Thank you for helping our families make memories that will last a lifetime, while easing the stress that the holidays can bring. Illuminations is truly a highlight of the Christmas season for our members and their families.” -Anne Chandler, Boys & Girls Club of South Central Kansas

SCAMS AGAINST SENIORS Nationwide, scams targeted towards seniors generate billions of dollars each year for criminals. Seniors are often targets of scams because they are often more trusting of others and easier to persuade. Denise Groene, State Director of the Better Business Bureau, will show you how to spot and avoid scams as well as the top scams that are being used in our community. Block their attempts to rob you!

MARCH 28

2018 ANNUALS Rita from Arnold’s Greenhouse is back with us. This time she will be showing new and outstanding annuals. These are the colorful, prolific bloomers that we love for pots, baskets and borders.

A COLORFUL GARDEN ALL YEAR! Kansas' seasons cover the spectrum from 0 temperatures in winter to over 100 degrees in summer. What a difficult place to have colorful gardens year-round. Lynn Campbell Behnke will teach us the solutions to that seemingly impossible task. Bloom times, colors, heights, all the information we need when choosing our plants!

Catering Provided By: March – Sweet Basil April – Blue Moon // May – Sweet Basil

HOSTAS FOR YOUR LANDSCAPE Danny Lawson, President of the Wichita Hosta Society, will introduce us to the “hot” hostas for tomorrow. He will show how to use the “latest/greatest hostas” in a landscape along with the old reliable hostas. He will also be introducing us to the latest American Hosta Society’s National Display Garden...at Botanica! Hostas will be for sale before and after the presentation. GROWING ROSES IN A DIVERSIFIED GARDEN: THE TREND AWAY FROM MONOCULTURE If a gardener is interested in reducing or eliminating spraying, lowering the incidence of Rose Rosette and enjoying a variety of textures and colors, then incorporating roses as part of a diversified garden should appeal to them. Marcee Suderman, an accomplished rosarian, will show us how to apply this new trend.

MAY 9

would like to wish Dee Alston all the best in her retirement. Dee worked at Botanica for 24 years and party in January 2018 with lots of coworkers, friends and family. She is a friend to all and we will miss her working here, but look forward to seeing her return as a volunteer.

A Message from Friends of Botanica We would like to share what Friends of Botanica was up to in 2017. We worked many events throughout the year to raise funds to help support Botanica. We provided meals and beverages, popcorn, sno-cones, ice cream sundaes and funnel cakes at events including Tulips, Fairies & Forts, Mother’s Day, Take Flight, Tuesdays on the Terrace, BOOtanica and Illuminations. During Illuminations we provided food services and sold lots of cookies, candy and s’mores. We very much appreciate the volunteers who prepped for the events, staffed all the areas and cleaned up afterward. With funds raised we provided the following gifts to Botanica in 2017: • Mums and fall perennials • Tulips, daffodils and hyacinths • Food and beverages for breaks and lunches on all Weed & Feeds and Planting Days • “No Parking” signs for the shed • Storage crates and shelving for the shed • Illuminations hot drinks for musicians, Supper with Santa attendees, volunteers, etc. We will present a check to Botanica to be used for a specific expense in the Carousel Garden. These funds represent a portion of the hot drinks, cookie and candy sales and one half of the donations we received during Illuminations. --Friends of Botanica
