REMEMBERING: PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE
Design Studio VI-Thesis Professor Karin Tehve Healthcare Design 4,000 sf / 372 sm
How can materials activate our senses and evoke memories, especially for those struggling with memory loss during early to mid-stage dementia? This thesis explores methods to support autonomy amongst people whose identity and power have been stripped from them.

Cognitive mapping is difficult for people with dementia. They understand where they are going if they can see it, so it is important to set up direct visual sightlines.

KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM Proposal
The kitchen and dining room areas are intended to involve senior participants in the entire lifecycle of their meals, from cultivation to cleanup. The spaces are laid out as one room, and a window placed at the sink provides a view of the herb garden, providing context to the dining experience. Dining Tabletop

CONNECTIVITY: EBB + FLOW
Design Studio I Professor Tania Branquinho Selected Work, 2018 Education Design 500 sf / 46 sm
The design for the corridor is based on a painting by Max Ernst. How can a threshold at Pratt which separates students from different majors be redesigned so that they come together?

CONNECTIVITY: EBB + FLOW Proposal
When a person enters the corridor, they are guided inward by the tilted wooden linear vectors and transparent orange partitions. The linear elements lead the occupants to seating areas tucked within two corners of the room, which provide people with some privacy from those walking through the space. Concurrently, transparent partitions allow light to pass through, projecting color onto the white wall – its orange hue and shape are captured, creating another sense of directionality.

VISIBILITY
Design Studio II Professor John Heida Hospitality Design 3,000 sf / 279 sm
The airport restaurant faรงade for fast food chain Chipotle was inspired by wire mesh. Perforations in the faรงade allow hungry travelers a glimpse into the space, highlighting the menu and open kitchen. Passersby are visually connected with restaurant patrons while physically divided from them.
21
CHIPOTLE MEXICAN GRILL Client Analysis This is the first national restaurant chain to provide its customers with organic, non-GMO produce. They take pride in their transparent approach to sourcing natural ingredients.
METAL INSECT SCREEN Material Behavior and Boundary Explorations Physical boundaries are the interruption of sociospaces that can either create unity, division, attraction, or repulsion in defining the transition.

VISIBILITY Proposal
The section cuts above show airport users and their 30° cone of vision, also known as field of vision. The wire mesh facade is perforated to highlight views inside the restaurant, such as the menu, open kitchen, and seating areas - in order to attract passersby.

FRAME + FOSTERING: INTEGRATION
Design Studio II Professor John Heida Retail Design 5,000 / 465 sm
The concept of frame and fostering lays out the programs in the space so that they frame the individual, while fostering occurs as spaces become more personalized as one moves vertically in the building.

CUSTOM NIGHTSTANDS
Safae Interior Design Internship work, 2020
The nightstands were designed for a young couple who wanted smart furniture with hidden electrical support. The cable runs alongside the inner casework so that it is integrated and hidden from view. The couple can charge their phones inside the top drawer.
