The Platform House

Space Diagrams and Orientation to the Sun

The client wanted a house on the West coast (California) which would provide a pool and regulation diving platform for the husband to practice on. The wife requested a private office space for her to work at home from. The couple wanted a flowing floor plan with an open area for entertaining. They wanted this entertaining area to extend outward from the building into an exterior entertaining area. Requested Spaces: •Olympic Diving Platforms •Private Office •Open Entertaining Area •Private Bedroom Area The client requested the bedrooms be separated from the common spaces within the house. The common spaces naturally sat near each other and were tied back into the pool area.

4

To incorporate the diving platforms into the house, the spaces were developed as cubes and stacked together to form the diving tower.

The site for the house is located in Northern California directly on the ocean coast. The site slopes slightly towards the ocean from Highway 1 on the East edge of the property. The site drops off just before the ocean creating a beautiful viewing cliff.

The house was oriented to maximize the view towards the ocean. Smaller windows are placed on the East Facade to allow the morning sunlight inside.

The platforms are designed to be accessible without entering the living spaces of the house. This will result in the swimmers climbing the facade of the house to the platforms while the occupants can use the interior stairs to progress from level to level.

ai St La dd er s

The spaces of the house are designed to fit the needs of the client. Not oversized, and not simplified to a box. This idea of efficient space resulted in offset areas and creates interesting facades from every viewing angle.

rs

Connected to the platforms are the bathrooms. By design the bathrooms are accessible so the divers do not have to cross any living spaces to use the facilities while swimming.

9

The regulation diving platforms protrude from the West elevation and over the pool below. A rooftop terrace/office space provides panoramic views of the surrounding site.

The diving platforms are designed to be used as balconies to view the Sun setting along the Ocean towards the West. Green roofs were incorporated in areas of the house to reduce the absorption of hot California sunlight into the house. This vegetation also offsets the green space removed from the site with the house construction.

Site Plan

The site is located just one block North from a public park which is visible when looking South from the West end of the building. The South/West end of the site received a good amount of sunlight through the day. The North side of the site is exposed to a small interior courtyard shared by adjacent buildings. This courtyard and North side of the site currently receive very limiting sunlight through the day due to the high buildings surrounding it, keeping it in shadow.

Linienstrasse 104 10115 Berlin, Germany

21

This site is located on an urban corner surrounded by multi-story buildings. Most of the immediate buildings are made of stone and are of a lighter color. These immediate buildings line the sidewalk with a flush facade; some have smaller gable roofs on the street facade. The lighter white/sandstone-colored facades help keep the narrow streets feeling light and do not weigh the street down with heavy colors/dark materials.

ARH 609 Advanced Design Studio I Project Compliation: A New Education Educational Manifesto: Active Learning There are many ways to teach students and all have their benefits, but one is most effective: active learning. learning The idea of active learning is to get kids involved within the lesson with hands-on activities. The idea of letting kids work with physical things and solve the problem themselves or in groups are excellent for engaging the brain and body within the learning process. Active learning produces different experiences and reactions for the students: emotional, sensory, single or group involvement, what they learned, and if the experience and lesson can be replicated. The involvement of sensory engagement works closely with emotional experiences. Students need engaging spaces that can be used for multiple activities. Architecture lends its design properties to benefit students by creating the most optimal space for the best learning experience students can have.

Designing for a New Experience The aim is to create a new grade school experience based on the students understanding on the subject, and not divided by age groups. The school will have multiple areas that can be utilized by the public after school hours to create facilities to better not only the youth, but the community as a whole. A set of “traditional” spaces are included such as an office area, restrooms, cafeteria, auditorium, library, and a music space. An inclusion of a virtual area (virtual reality) for augmented learning, a technology lab to teach electronics, and a flexible hands-on lab (woodworking, experiments, etc.) are included with this experience approach. An adaptable art space and a garden for students to grow their own plants. A series of longer projects will span the school year so the students are engaged over a long period of time with a similar task in mind as their classmates. Master Diagram

The school will have classroom areas with different heights for students to be comfortable to learn in and will help cultivate creativity. A large ramp connects every space through this structure to create unique learning areas. This school will utilize unique interior and exterior flexible spaces to create engaging experiences for every student.

Organic shapes can play from the curved site plan and the adjacency to the curving waterfront property. This can result in unique forms and break apart from the typical rectangular commercial properties.

Solid/Void The existing neighborhood has it’s strength’s and weakensses. This is the idea for solids and voids to create a building. By utilizing building masses (solids) and open site areas (voids) then the building can give back to the community. Open spaces will allow the comunity to utilize the buildings open spaces no matter the time of day.

ARH 619 Advanced Design Studio III

The idea of the open site is to give back as much of the site as possible to the occupants. This is also to maximize the views available onsite towards the surrounding park and San Francisco Bay.

APS3.1

Matthew Portice Portfolio

Open Site/Elevated Structures This model is designed with the lower space being set into the ground. This would allow the roof of that space to be level with the existing grade and would keep a large chunk of the site open for the community. The grade level would be open with the second floor starting twenty feet above grade.

Organic Shapes This conceptual model may be hard to decipher at first. The idea is to create a large facade overlay on the structures within. This skin would be organic in shape and would be translucent/transparent in areas. The entire interior would be able to be illuminated with indirect lighting as this skin would diffuse the direct daylight. The masses would follow the program layout of the interior and the skin would waterfall down the building and blend into the ground level.

Solid/Void This form would push some program down into the lower level, or create a sunken two-story space within. The circular void would be stretching outward like a hug towards the neighborhood. The spaces on the top are cut to mimic the forms of the first level but are optimized for views towards the adjacent park and San Francisco Bay.

This project aims for LEED Gold Certification which is beneficial to the performance of the building. The occupants will benefit from materials chosen for their natural properties, such as wood and cork. The materials are chosen for the benefit of the occupants (health, asthetics, atmosphere, etc.) as well as their environmental impact. The materials and products are Cradle-to-Cradle Certified when available as well as all wood products are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified to verify the wood is from responsibly harvested forests with ethical processing. The building uses geothermal heating/cooling to reduce energy consumption for occupant comfort. An air handling unit pumps fresh, filtered air around the building when natural, cross-ventilation is not enough to ventilate the spaces. An abundance of daylighting is used to reduce the need for artificial lighting. All plumbing fixtures are WaterSense label fixtures for reduced water use. Appliances are Energy Star labelled when available for reduced energy consumption. OPERATION The operation of the building should not be interrupted with the passive environmental controls implimented within the building. The building is contrilled with a Building Management System with a series of sensors to allow the optimal ventilation, heating/cooling, and light levels throughout the building. The BMS can dim the lights when enough natural lighting is illuminating the interior and louvers/windows are motor-operated to open and close to allow natural ventilation through the structure. A larger up front cost is needed for the geothermal heating/cooling system but will be partially offset as the ground piping can be paired with the required structural piles embedded in the ground below the building. This energy system will also pay itself off over time via traditional energy bills as all heating/cooling needed is produced naturally and only minimal electricity is needed to run the system. WOOD/CLT PANELS The main material for this project is wood formed into cross-laminated timber members which can be prefabricated and assembled on site. As stated on Associated Construction Publications, "CLT also has a lighter carbon footprint as wood products continue to store carbon absorbed by the trees while growing, and engineered wood manufacturing requires significantly less energy to produce than concrete and steel." ACP also outlines the life cycle analysis stating "CLT buildings are easily altered and remodeled and are also fully recyclable once they reach the end of their useful life." CLT panels are a natural building material which introduce no harmful chemicals to the building occupants and can biodegrade at their end of life. CLT panels are also competitively proces against concrete, masonry, and other common materials. https://www.acppubs.com/articles/509-benefits-of-building-with-cross-laminated-timber CONCRETE The use of concrete in this project was meant to be minimal as concrete production creates large amounts of atmosphereharming pollutants. Incorporating fly-ash, typically an industrial waste product, into the concrete production will lessen the carbon footprint of the concrete. Concrete also has lery limited after-life use, such as aggregate or possibly ground into landscaping cover. Concrete is a very common building material so installation is straightforward and pricing is competitive. OTHER MATERIALS All windows and door frames are made from aluminum and can be recycled if the unit has reached its end of life. The windows are unitized units and can be assembled off-site reducing the labor cost on site. The insulation found within the walls and roof structure is cork and can naturally biodegrade at the end of it's life, or be repurposed. The solar panels selected for this project are Cradle-to-Cradle Certified so they can be reused into other panels/parts once unusable.

Water Use/Treatment

The heating/cooling system used for the Hunters Point Market in San Francisco, California is a geothermal heat pump system. The geothermal system loops will be embedded within the site below the building integrated with the structural piers. This system will create even heating/cooling within the interior spaces with little to no visible equipment. The system is slow to adjust to quick temperature changes, but can be programmed to pre-heat/cool spaces for predicted exterior temperature changes.

In addition to the geothermal radiant heat pumps, a commercial air handling unit (AHU) with an integrated heat recovery ventilator will be implemented to help heat/cool the incoming exterior air. This will also filter the air with almost continuous circulation. Overhead fans and operable windows will also be installed for occupant control to circulate air.

The main shell of the building has skylights built into the gridshell. The exterior are composed of storefront window systems and the rooftop gridshell reaching down to the ground with additional windows. The abundance of windows will allow the interior spaces to be illuminated naturally. When natural sunlight isn’t enough, LED light fixtures with dimming and integrated occupancy sensors will illuminate each space. Fixtures will be Energy Star labeled when applicable.

The shape of the building will direct rainwater to the base of the structure to be collected for reuse. Site landscaping will be integrated around the building for natural filtration of rainwater and street runoff. Any water to be collected from rain/runoff will be re-used for either landscape irrigation, garden watering, or accessible to the public for home gardening/irrigation.

Motorized louvers and window panels will adjust automatically for optimal interior temperatures. The louvers and panels will open/close to allow natural ventilation to flow through the interior spaces. A series of louvers is set into a light well on the roof so the hot air can rise and exit the building. This warmer air can then be taken in to the air handling unit so the unit uses less energy to condition the air before circulating it.

Thermal massing will also be used to absorb sunlight during the day and can radiate that heat outward during the evening. The floor of the market is a 3” fly-ash concrete topping embedded with the radiant heating/cooling piping and will absorb direct sunlight.

All plumbing fixtures will be WaterSense fixtures to reduce the water usage as much as possible. A grey water system may be used to filter waste sink water and add to the irrigation water supply.

In addition to the storefront systems, a heliostat will be used to reflect sunlight down a shaft to the lower level for natural sunlight illumination.

The Rivera Shopping and Entertainment Center in Podolsk, Russia is wrapped in different shapes of aluminum panels and incorporate glazing panels along with LED lighting to illuminate the facade. This building was chosen due to the variety of panel shapes and usage of each panel (visibility, lighting, etc.).

The FRAC Centre in Orleans, France utilizes aluminum composite panels to create unique shapes on this building. Parts of the exterior is perforated to allow light to shine through to create interesting designs. This building was chosen because of the unique shapes created from the aluminum composite panels.
