ABOUT THE PROJECT The Michigan city station is an old historic brick building dating from 1915, which is now a local restaurant placed between the Old Lighthouse Museum and the Lubeznik Center for the Arts. The proposal involves developing an integrated transport facility that will form a key gateway to both Chicago and Detroit. Located on the land surrounding the station, the project will deliver a new commercial development that will hopefully offer a regenerative opportunity for the city to deliver a more dynamic mixed use proposal. The proposal will include a hotel, fitness center, office building, retail, and transportation via train and bus. In addition, the project will also propose an alternative for dealing with future possibilities for the water front.

The Simple place is a combination of buildings that are a gentle mix of contemporary, modern, and traditional construction, with a carefully considered materiality and mass. The overarching architectural intent is one of strategically placed pocket moments, simplicity of materials, light color palette, warmly lit corners to invite and “sweep one into the building, small active squares, and calming water features. The layout was designed to be easily navigated and have a strong sense of visibility weather you are outside or inside of the buildings. It is said that people make a place beautiful, we simply facilitate a place for them to do so. A moment is defined as a brief period of time, or viewed as something equating to significance or importance. This project aims to make people feel a sense of place and significance.

TEXTURE The aesthetic of the simple place is to achieve adaptability and light. The shell of the buildings consists of ceramic paneling, stucco, and corrugated aluminum, all lightweight materials that are environmentally friendly. This spread features the South-west corner of the office building. The project celebrates simplicity, but there needed to be moments that stood out. This is just one example of how different textures were used to catch the user’s attention as they arrive. The design hopes to facilitate spaces that provoke a sense of vibrancy, embody a sense of peace, and reflects the essence of significance and purpose. A diversity of well-designed buildings and spaces is what creates and sparks memory. The textures of these spaces and buildings are only used to enhance this experience. A great building is believed to start with a combined effort and cooperative interaction; A conversation between the designer and the user.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

OUTCOME

Allison Ramsey Architects is a residential firm located in Beaufort, South Carolina. Allison Ramsey strives to provide good, quality costumer service to all of their clients. The firm has created a foundation that celebrates a collaborative approach to design and an architectural philosophy that is rooted in traditional design. During my time there I participated in a firm wide charrette that focused on a development in Bluffton, South Carolina. The project consisted of tiny homes, small 1-bedroom homes, and small 2-bedroom homes. I was given the opportunity to design a small 2-bedroom home that celebrated traditionalism and the enhancement of sense-of-place for a better quality of life.

This project celebrates the integration of space and human connection. The design is rooted in the idea that a small home doesn’t have to feel small, but can embody space and people comfortably. This 2-bedroom home tries to connect as many rooms as possible with minimal walls separating spaces. The project focuses on the connection between the dining room, great room, kitchen, and loft space. This home tries to highlight the connection with people and space through interactive spaces. The space is designed with a mind for interaction and awareness to create a suitable living environment. The kitchen and great room connection serves as a space for engagement with the inhabitants as well as the connection to the loft above. The project lends itself to the idea that a small home can have great impact.

SOUTHEAST PARK VIEW

ABOUT THE PROJECT

DELIVERY

The Trinity Lutheran Church and school are located in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Amongst the community there has been conversations about expanding the area and adding more variety to reach a more diverse group of people. The client wanted to use the remaining land that the church and school don’t take up to develop residential spaces as well as small scale commercial space. The Lutheran church requested there be housing for the elderly as well as apartments and town homes for local college students to rent or young families to buy. They wanted a space that was easy to navigate and easily accessible. The client wanted to broaden the sense of community.

This project was actually a partnered project. The following design was developed by my partner Aaron and I. Our desire for this project was to create a space that felt intimate for home owners but also accessible to those in the community. As for the commercial component we thought in order to maintain the spirit of Berrien springs we would build a small modern coffee shop, with local artist who could show case there work in the community. We know that community and fellowship is very important to the church so we wanted to create a small park that was private enough that residents feel comfortable. We want to foster an environment that promotes communal living.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

DELIVERY

Tryon farms is a historic landscape located in Michigan city that has been transformed into a modern country getaway for people who want to live secluded from the hustle and bustle while still staying connected to Chicago and lake Michigan. Tryon farms is known for offering home designs that are inspired by their surroundings. They try there hardest to bring the outdoors, indoors. I was tasked with designing a home that could fit into the preexisting environment and integrating the atmosphere with the house design.

My site was on the border of a small creek. I saw this as an opportunity to emphasize the view in the house design. I started with the idea that I wanted the experience to feel like you were outside. I designed an indoor porch that merged with the family via a fire place on each side. I wanted the owner to have the option of being outside even when the weather begins to drop. The surrounding houses used corrugated metal as siding, so I followed this trend to keep with the industrial modern look. My site was populated with trees, so instead of just tearing all of them down I decided to reuse some of the tree as rounds to create a pathway to the entrance. I used large windows because I wanted the home to embrace the outdoors almost using it as its wall paper. I tried to embrace the natural beauty of the site rather than cluttering it with decorative distractions.
