ABOUT THE PROJECT Michigan city is situated between Chicago and Detroit, and because of this the client wanted to figure out the best way to connect better to these two neighboring cities. Right now Michigan city is not viewed as a destination location. In Michigan city you will find outlet shopping, a museum, the historic light house, and a beautiful view of lake Michigan.
The vision the client had for the development was to create a sense of place; staying power. They have asked that I develop property that is located on the water front. The client has asked for a hotel, fitness center, office building, commercial space, transit by train and bus, as well as the development of the water front. The client wants an environment that would draw people to Michigan city more often.

I wanted to develop an environment that left an immediate impression to visitors upon arrival. When designing the property, it was very important to me that I create pocket moments throughout the site. I wanted people to feel as if the project was embracing them, rather than feeling overwhelmed by big masses of buildings. Each of these “moments� consisted of either a water feature, small active squares, and an opportunity to enjoy food and music. I went with a simpler straight forward layout because I believe that people make a place beautiful, I simply just want to facilitate a place for them to do so. A moment is defined as a brief period of time, or viewed as something that equates to significance or importance. When you arrive at this site I want people to feel a sense of place and significance.

TEXTURE When I was design the overall aesthetic of the site, I wanted it to be something light and adaptable. For the outer shell of the buildings I went with ceramic paneling for most of the buildings, and also infused stucco and corrugated aluminum. This page features the South-west corner of the office building. I wanted there to be a statement feature on each building; when people are arriving to the site I wanted there to be aAspects that were memorable. I wanted to facilitate spaces that provoke a sense of being alive, embodies a sense of calm, and gives a sense of significance of purpose. Ad diversity of well-designed buildings and spaces is what I believe creates and sparks memory. The textures of these spaces only enhances the experience. A great building starts with a combined effort and cooperative interaction; A conversation between the designer and the users.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This past summer I had the privilege of interning at Allison Ramsey architects in Beaufort, South Carolina. I was able to assist on many projects and gain a better understanding of what a residential firm does. Towards the end of my time there we had a firm wide charrette for a project development taking place in Bluffton, South Carolina. The development was to consist of tiny homes, small 1 bedroom, and small 2 bedroom homes. I was assigned to design a small two-bedroom home for the project.
When designing this home, my goal was to make a small home feel as spacious as possible. With that being said I tried to connect as many spaces as I could and also limited the amount of walls I used. I designed the home so that the dining room, great room, and kitchen functioned as one big room. I even tried to incorporate the loft by having a balcony that looked down into the spaces below. It’s all about connection. I wanted there to be many spaces for a family to convene or not and still feel like they are around one another.

ABOUT THE PROJECT The Trinity Lutheran Church and school are located in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Amongst the community there has been conversations about expanding the area and adding more variety to reach a more diverse group of people. The client wanted to use the remaining land that the church and school don’t take up to develop residential spaces as well as small scale commercial space.
DELIVERY The Lutheran church requested there be housing for the elderly as well as apartments and town homes for local college students to rent or young families to buy. They wanted a space that was easy to navigate and easily accessible. The client wanted to broaden the sense of community.
This project was actually a partnered project. The following design was developed by my partner Aaron and I. Our desire for this project was to create a space that felt intimate for home owners but also accessible to those in the community. As for the commercial component we thought in order to maintain the spirit of Berrien springs we would build a small modern coffee shop, with local artist who could show case there work in the community. We know that community and fellowship is very important to the church so we wanted to create a small park that was private enough that residents feel comfortable. We want to foster an environment that promotes communal living.

Tryon farms is a historic landscape located in Michigan city that has been transformed into a modern country getaway for people who want to live secluded from the hustle and bustle while still staying connected to Chicago and lake Michigan. Tryon farms is known for offering home designs that are inspired by their surroundings. They try there hardest to bring the outdoors, indoors. I was tasked with designing a home that could fit into the preexisting environment and integrating the atmosphere with the house design.
My site was on the border of a small creek. I saw this as an opportunity to emphasize the view in the house design. I started with the idea that I wanted the experience to feel like you were outside. I designed an indoor porch that merged with the family via a fire place on each side. I wanted the owner to have the option of being outside even when the weather begins to drop. The surrounding houses used corrugated metal as siding, so I followed this trend to keep with the industrial modern look. My site was populated with trees, so instead of just tearing all of them down I decided to reuse some of the tree as rounds to create a pathway to the entrance. I used large windows because I wanted the home to embrace the outdoors almost using it as its wall paper. I tried to embrace the natural beauty of the site rather than cluttering it with decorative distractions.
