WELCOME Welcome to our sweet 16th Melbourne Queer Film Festival, driven by Volkswagen. We’re excited to welcome our very first naming rights sponsor and thank Volkswagen for coming on board. We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship. As the Festival comes of age, so too do we hope to see important social and legal changes ahead for our LGBTI communities. Film is often seen as a reflection of the social values of a particular time, and in considering that it’s pertinent to see how important a social document our Festival has become. This year’s themes - gay marriage, body image, community, family, isolation, coming out, death, love and relationships - are all significant to us as we head toward changing times. Our feature film list is bulging at the seams with foreign language titles, with films emerging from places as far and wide as Serbia, Argentina, Israel, Turkey, Peru, India, Spain, and as close as the Philippines. Well over half of the titles featured are from non-English speaking parts of our globe. Some highlights that you shouldn’t miss include the gay favourites Good Boys (Yeladim Tovim), A Love to Hide (Un Amour A Taire), Queens (Reinas), and A Year Without Love (Un Año Sin Amor). For the girls, don’t miss worldwide hits The Journey (Sancharram), Unveiled (Fremde Haut), Take a Deep Breath (Disi Duboko), or Two Girls (Iki Genc Kiz). Sessions sure to sell out this year are bound to include worldwide festival favourites Adam & Steve, Eighteen, Beautiful Women, Gypo, Hellbent, Sévigné, Loggerheads, Third Man Out, When I’m 64, Three Dancing Slaves (Le Clan), Unconscious (Inconscientes) and the Australian premiere of Loving Annabelle. We’re proud and excited to be screening the Melbourne premiere of Thom Fitzgerald’s (The Hanging Garden, The Event, Beefcake) epic new film Three Needles which was a huge hit at the recent Toronto International Film Festival. Spanning decades and continents, Three Needles is an un-missable and enthralling story highlighting the global devastation of HIV/AIDS and starring a cast that includes Chlöe Sevigny, Olympia Dukakis and Stockard Channing.

8

There’s an eclectic selection of documentary packages to choose from with themes such as Orthodox Jewish lesbians, transgender issues, conservative queers, queer parenting, gay porn, and sexual fetish. To accompany those documentaries we have two special presentations this year. US director Travis Mathews will be presenting his acclaimed gay male body image documentary Do I look Fat?, and will join a panel discussion put together in partnership with Gay & Lesbian Health Victoria and the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (VGLRL). Don’t miss this panel discussion which is sure to raise issues relevant to many of us in the LGBTI communities. The VGLRL will also co-present a not-tobe-missed debate which will accompany a screening of the award winning gay marriage documentary Pursuit of Equality. This is clearly an issue which raises the temperatures of many of us, and the debate is bound to cover both sides of the issue in a most entertaining, controversial and enlightening way.

WELCOME There’ll be plenty of filmmakers to meet this year with the directors or stars of the films My Brother Nikhil, Gypo and Do I Look Fat? all set to join us, not to mention local filmmakers from around Australia vying for the $2000 cash prize for the City of Melbourne Award for Best Australian Short Film. We thank the City of Melbourne for their longstanding support of the Festival, which was further confirmed with the awarding of triennial funding to the MQFF this year. Our always sold out opening night film and party will be held once again at St Kilda’s fabulous Astor Theatre, with the Melbourne premiere of the gorgeous New Zealand film 50 Ways of Saying Fabulous as a highlight of the night – not to mention the shindig of the year immediately following! Closing night also offers a huge treat with the Melbourne premiere of Happy Endings. With a massive cast including Lisa Kudrow, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Tom Arnold, Happy Endings will be a huge hit when it opens commercially following the Fest. Join us to discuss your favourite Festival flicks at the after-party at F4 immediately following Happy Endings. Please let the filmmakers know you appreciate them by casting your vote for the various awards. Voting will be easy with forms available following each session. We thank the City of Melbourne, Turtle Cove and David McCarthy for their loyal and continued support of the Festival and the awards, and of short filmmaking in Australia. And one last reminder: the films featured during the Festival are here for the Festival only, and it’s extremely rare for any of them to be picked up for commercial or television release - the competition for tickets will be intense, so support our queer filmmaking friends, and get in early to avoid missing out. Enjoy your Festival!

Lisa Daniel Festival Director

OPENING 50 WAYS OF SAYING FABULOUS Dir: Stewart Main, New Zealand, 2005, 35mm, 90 mins Chubby 12-year-old Billy has a penchant for dress-up and a loathing of sports that make it achingly clear to all he’s a budding ‘friend of Dorothy’. But with his small-country-town naiveté, Billy doesn’t even know what slurs like ‘poofter’ mean. Best friend and fellow misfit Lou is a tomboy who loves roughing it with the boys in rugby, while dodging her mother’s attempts to get her into a bra. When new nerd in town Roy becomes the school’s next whipping boy, Billy and Roy team up and are soon enmeshed in a series of lusty encounters. But it’s the arrival of hunky young farmhand Jamie (Michael Dorman, Secret Life of Us) that throws the real sizzler in the pot of sexual tensions, personal rivalries and high-school hierarchies. With its retro camera zooms, sci-fi fantasy sequences and over-the-top music, 50 Ways neatly twists the action into a surreal, occasionally macabre, thoroughly original rites-of-passage drama. A subversive comedy–drama, sure to leave audiences talking. (BZ)

CLOSING HAPPY ENDINGS Dir: Don Roos, USA, 2005, 35mm, 127 mins Here’s the perfect way to end the Festival - in the hands of an all star-ensemble cast featuring Kisa Kudrow, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jesse Bradford, Bobby Carnavale (Will and Grace), Steve Coogan and Laura Dern in the latest comedy from Don Roos, the maker of the queer classic The Opposite of Sex. Weaving together multiple stories, Happy Endings is a sharply observed, richly detailed and witty look at the modern pitfalls of love, family, friends and just coping in this modern world. Charley lives with his boyfriend Gil but they’ve hit a rough patch. Little things are annoying Charley and his latest bugbear is that their friends, couple Pam and Diane, are lying to them. A couple of years ago the women tried unsuccessfully to use Gil as a sperm donor, but Charley doesn’t believe them – he reckons their 2 year-old son looks just like Gil… Film student Nick is blackmailing Mamie. He claims he knows the identity of the son Mamie gave up for adoption and will only reveal his identity if he can film the reunion for his school assignment. Otis is gay but doesn’t want to accept the fact. His friends all know it but they keep up the charade as Otis lives in a mansion with his dad, and they can use the facilities whenever they want. However when sexy stranger Jude shows up after being kicked out of her cousin’s place, she seduces Otis, with a little help from a lot of alcohol, and promptly moves in. Otis’ single dad is just happy his son is straight and is even happier when Jude starts to show interest in him. (PT)

CENTREPIECE THREE NEEDLES Dir: Thom Fitzgerald, Canada, 2005, 35mm, 123 mins The latest film from Canadian filmmaker Thom Fitzgerald (The Event MQFF 04, Beefcake, Hanging Garden) is a sweeping epic comprising a trio of stories that uses the global devastation of HIV/AIDS as a linking thread. Set across three continents, this international production is led by an impressive cast including Chloë Sevigny (Boys Don’t Cry), Lucy Liu (Kill Bill), Olympia Dukakis (Tales of the City’s Mrs Madrigal) and Stockard Channing (The Matthew Shepard Story, West Wing). In the first story, set in rural China, heavily pregnant Jin establishes a blood-donor clinic paying the impoverished locals $5 for each donation, only to discover that soon the villagers are falling ill. In Montreal, porn star Denys is HIV+ but uses blood from his ailing bed-ridden father to fake the regular tests required for his job. In the final chapter, three nuns journey to a remote coastal South African community to ‘rescue’ the souls of the locals to enable them to escape purgatory. All three stories are intricately drawn, teasing out myriad issues in the fight against HIV/AIDS: poverty, religion, cultural (mis)understanding, greed, lack of education and exploitation. Fitzgerald has crafted a sobering, yet entertaining and un-missable film, one that is vital for our times. (PT)

SELECTORS’ Each year the selectors get into a scrum, put their bums in the air and nominate their favourite session of the Festival. It was an easy decision this year with the unanimous choice for BEST session of the festival going to Fucking Different, the amazingly eclectic selection of the newest, queerest shorts from Germany compiled by renowned filmmaker Jürgen Brüning (The Raspberry Reich MQFF 2005, Hustler White, Latin Boys Go to Hell). Miss it at your peril, this session of shorts has something for the boys and the girls, and is guaranteed to blow your mind.

FUCKING DIFFERENT Dirs: various, Germany, 2005, video, 90 mins

German with English subtitles Compelling gender mash up by 14 gay and lesbian film directors for a queer crossover audience. Contemporary German filmmakers were asked to imagine the opposite gender’s desires, loves and sexuality and to represent it in a short film. The result is Fucking Different and it has earned our Selectors’ Choice high five this year, for its originality, engaging visceral eroticism and seductively striking images. Lesbians present films about being gay men, gay men present films about being lesbians and there lies no limits to the imagination. Each film is a scintillating inquiry into the depths of sexual identity. Sexy, funny, sad, romantic, dark and philosophical re-imaginings of the stereotypes and archetypes, constructed and deconstructed representations that make up the myriad images of who we all are, what we all dream of and what we all love – the body, the mind, the spirit. Funny, uber-sensual thought provoking and in-ya-face vignettes about desire, love, lust and wet dreams from some of the most furtive image makers today. (PA)

FEATURES ADAM & STEVE Dir: Craig Chester, USA, 2005, video, 100 mins

Pillow Talk meets When Harry Met Sally in this comic romp from the producers of gay fave Latter Days, certain to have you whooping in the aisles. A face familiar to fans of Kiss Me Guido and Swoon, Craig Chester debuts in the director’s seat with a romantic comedy about two unlikely guys for whom fate won’t take no for an answer. Having met in the 80s after a disastrous one-night stand, Adam and Steve don’t recognise each other when they meet again fifteen years later. Adam’s best friend, formerly obese stand-up comic Rhonda (Parker Posey), works hard to bring the two boys together while maintaining her own dignity. Replete with superb dance numbers – including a wickedly funny two-step showdown – Adam & Steve is a cult classic in the making. Watch out for the poignant, all-too-familiar ‘Are you asking me out?’ scene, not to mention Parker Posey’s droll, razor-sharp one-liners. A massive hit at gay and lesbian film festivals around the world, Adam & Steve is not to be missed. “Craig Chester delivers plenty of well-timed slapstick, a brace of oddball zanies and a couple of show-stopper musical numbers.” – Variety (BZ)

BEAUTIFUL WOMEN (SCHÖNE FRAUEN) Dir: Sathyan Ramesh, Germany, 2003, 35mm, 87 mins German with English subtitles Life takes on interesting dimensions when five beautiful actresses end up in the same audition room, on the same day, all vying for the same part. Geno is a gorgeous lesbian trapped in an unfulfilling relationship that she’s thinking about leaving. Barbara is sweet but a touch naïve, and sure that her boyfriend is about to leave her for somebody else. Dana is contained and classically gorgeous. Kandis is a free spirit who enjoys casual sex with a guy she’s trying desperately to keep at arm’s length. Karin has a very familiar face that nobody can quite place and a secret that she refuses to reveal. It doesn’t take long for the gals to discover that none of them really wants the part in the low-budget erotic thriller; they blow off the audition and take to the highways in Geno’s car. As day moves toward night, the women grow hesitant to leave one another, and an unpredictable course of events dumps them at a hotel, where their deepest longings, hopes, and fears are gradually revealed over an endless supply of alcohol. Risking her life every day is simply business as usual for sexy amateur bisexual stuntwoman Rebeca Fuarte. Her dream to make it in Hollywood as a stunt pro is interrupted when she receives a curious letter from her Peruvian grandmother. It casts Rebeca’s mind back to her childhood and the events surrounding the mysterious illness that plagued her infant brother and eventually ‘killed’ him. She recalls odd conversations about her being an hermaphrodite, enduring unexplained surgeries as a child, and decides to return to her hometown of Lima to find the answers to her past. She visits the hospital where both she and her brother were born some two decades prior and discovers a file of shocking revelations which make her question her identity as a woman. Along the way, Rebeca meets a sexy young woman who changes her life. Together they unravel Rebeca’s secret hidden past, explore hot-blooded lesbian passion fuelled by self-discovery and find love along the way. Both is a compelling adventure through the minefields of sexuality, body and family based on the filmmaker’s own life experiences. (PA) SESSION 23

THE FAVOUR (EL FAVOR)

EIGHTEEN Dir: Richard Bell, Canada, 2005, video, 95 mins Pip abandons his oppressive family and turns to a life on the streets after the death of his gay brother. On his 18th birthday, Pip’s father tracks him down and passes on a present from his deceased grandfather. The gift is an audio-tape of his grandfather reminiscing about his time during World War 2 when he was caring for a dying man on his own 18th birthday. While living as a street kid, Pip develops friendships with Clark, a streetwise gay hustler, Jenny, an aspiring social worker and Father Chris, a local priest. As Pip begins to discover himself, he finds that there are certain parallels between his life and his grandfather’s. The cast includes Ian McKellen (voice of the grandfather), Alan Cumming (Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion) and Thea Gill (Queer As Folk). (DC) SESSION 15 MAR

Mora and Roberta are a young, happy, and at first glance, well-adjusted lesbian couple. The only thing missing in their life is a baby, and the girls want one desperately. A solution seems to present itself when Mora’s turkey inseminator brother Felipe is scheduled to come to dinner. There’s only one problem: Felipe doesn’t know that Mora is a lesbian, nor does he know that her ‘roommate’ is also her lover, so talking to him honestly is not an option. As a result the crazy gals hatch a seemingly foolproof plan to have sex bomb Roberta seduce hapless Felipe – with a little help from some illicit additives to his drink. Naturally, for a comedy farce, things don’t go quite as smoothly as the girls’ planned, with hilarious results. Colorful and wacky, with one demented twist and turn after another, The Favour is as giddy and delightful as Almodovar’s omnisexual comedy classics a la Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Stella and Lenni are young lesbian lovers who get caught in the middle of some steamy pashing by Lenni’s mother, a bourgeois sexpot who’s arrived to deliver an envelope full of lire to her rebellious daughter. A fight ensues, and Lenni’s mother is accidentally killed in a fall. The girls panic and stuff the body in the boot of the car and hit the highways with their dog Clio, looking for a place to dump Lenni’s mother who continues to offer advice to the girls from beyond. Before they know it, they’re joined by a drunken priest, and are pursued by a carload of homophobes with a video camera who are keen to get their hands on Lenni’s mother’s cash and to exact revenge from a past encounter. If you’ve enjoyed such lesbian favourites as Bound, Thelma and Louise and Heavenly Creatures, and who like a bit of steamy girl on girl action, Gasoline is for you. (LD)

Meni is a 17 year old hustler living in Tel Aviv who has already fathered a child, and earned a strong enough client base that he doesn’t need to trawl his wares on the street. Fellow rent boy Tal earns his money the hard way, living from trick to trick, always on the lookout for a quick buck, either from hustling or stealing. The two meet when they are hired to have sex for a voyeuristic client. Sitting in a café afterwards they quickly bond and spend the night together. Meni, trying to be cool, doesn’t want to rush things and proposes that they meet that night at a local club. When Tal turns up eager to see his new flame he is disappointed to find Meni absent. Not wanting to go home empty-handed Tal picks up a hot guy cruising him and they head off into the night. However, his conquest is not what he seems, and the night ahead holds numerous twists and shocks for both him and Meni. Sexually charged and often harsh in its depiction of its socially marginalised characters, Good Boys is a gripping look at 24 hours in the lives of two boys desperate to make a meaningful, and redemptive, connection in their chaotic lives. HARD PILL

GYPO Dir: Jan Dunn, UK, 2005, video, 98 mins

Gypo is a rivetting story told from three vastly different perspectives. Helen and Paul, a married working class couple in their forties, are struggling to keep it together within their chaotic family unit. Things begin to shift after their teenage daughter brings home Tasha, a refugee from the Czech Republic. Tasha brings out the ugly xenophobe in Paul, but arouses feelings in Helen that she never knew possible. As Helen’s friendship with Tasha develops, she begins to see different possibilities for her future. Breaking new ground, Gypo is the first feature from the UK to follow the rules of Dogme95 - a manifesto outlining a new way of making films, intended to bring them back to the purity of storytelling. Gypo follows suit with its realist style and naturalistic dialogue. The result here is to peer into a mesmerizing world that will have you thinking long after the film has finished. Winner of the Outstanding Achievement in Production Award at The British Independent Film Awards, and First Feature Award Frameline Film Festival. (LD) Jan Dunn will attend the screening and is a guest of the Festival

It’s an sinister but fascinating question: if a pill could make a gay person straight, would you take it? John Baumgartner’s thought provoking work of gay science fiction explores this emotive issue, prophesising about an all too conceivable future where gays could be eradicated from society. Tim is a lonely gay man who’s become disillusioned with his life. While his female friends adore him, he fails to find any meaningful relationships within his own community, and instead resorts to having sex with a confused straight male friend who is using Tim to divert attention from his own dysfunctional life. When Tim hears news of clinical trials that may help him become heterosexual he eagerly signs on hoping to turn his life around. But can Tim’s individuality, soul and lifelong friendships survive such a drastic change? Baumgartner’s debut feature is a cautionary tale that presents a controversial hypothetical scenario that is sure to launch heated discussion. (LD) Plus:

HATE CRIME Dir: Tommy Stovall, USA 2004, video, 104 mins Robbie and Trey are happily in love and preparing for a civil ceremony. Homophobic Chris moves in next door, displaying an obvious disdain for the boys’ lifestyle, fuelled by the religious upbringing of his pastor father. Trey is viciously attacked and Robbie seeks justice, but is thwarted by a lack of evidence and an unsympathetic investigator. He begins to crack under the pressure despite the support of friends and family. The film builds to a dramatic climax where nothing is quite as it seems. Bruce Davison (X-Men, Longtime Companion) gives a fine performance as the fire and brimstone pastor. Hate Crime is an interesting study of how a ‘love of God’ is used to rationalise acts of violence and hatred. (DC) SESSION 12 MAR

HELLBENT Dir: Paul Etheredge-Ouzts, USA, 2005, 35mm, 85 mins If you like your films with plenty of eye candy, lashings of blood and stacks of slashing, stabbing and bloody mayhem, then welcome to the first gay slasher film. Stylishly made and with more than enough scares to keep you on edge, this is best experienced with a group, if only to make fun of the first one to jump. In true horror movie form, Hellbent has gratuitous sex and gruesome death all in the first 3 minutes. Early on October 31, two horny guys are going at it in their car in the middle of deserted woods, only to be interrupted by a scythe-wielding, near-naked hardbody (complete with devil horns), eager for some head, and with two quick swipes he leaves two very beautiful, but decapitated corpses behind. As dawn breaks West Hollywood gears up for its annual Halloween carnival with news that a serial killer is on the loose. A group of four friends hits the party, all dressed up and ready to let loose, unaware that the killer has each of them in his sights. Who will fall victim to his blade? If the Scream rules follow true, then the sexually active ones are sure to fall – pray for sex, then let the blood run free…(PT) SESSION 6 MAR

THE JOURNEY (SANCHARRAM)

HILDE’S JOURNEY (HILDE’S REISE) Dir: Christof Vorster, Switzerland, 2004, 35mm, 90 mins German with English subtitles Steff dreams of owning a carpentry business. When his ex-lover Martin, known as Hilde and son of a wealthy family, dies of AIDS and designates Steff as his sole heir, Steff’s dream suddenly comes within reach. But instead of following Hilde’s last wish to scatter his ashes at sea, Steff makes a Faustian deal with the family to receive a fraction of the inheritance in exchange for the ashes and no contest of the will. Rex, Martin’s young and unpredictable boyfriend, is also in the picture. He refuses to let Steff betray the will, then kidnaps the urn. A sleeper hit at festivals in New York and Florida, Hilde’s Journey is a finely crafted drama about HIV/ AIDS, love and loyalty. As Rex and Steff head to the coast with Martin’s ashes, they each face potentially heartbreaking choices, with their allegiances shifting around both the living and the dead.

Hilde’s Journey is a powerful, sobering film, certain to leave a lasting impression on Melbourne audiences. (BZ)

In a country where even kissing on film has long been taboo, lesbian love stories are unsurprisingly thin on the ground. And it usually takes a filmmaker living elsewhere to attempt it (such as the Toronto-based Deepa Mehta who made Fire). The Journey, from Chicago-based Pullappally, tells the delicately moving tale of Kiran and Delilah, two best friends who grow up to realise their love for each other is actually something more. There are elements of Cyrano de Bergerac, when Kiran finds herself writing love poems to Delilah on behalf of the inarticulate Rajan. But Delilah soon finds out who the real author is… With a surprisingly ambivalent ending and some really beautiful cinematography – the framing is especially impressive throughout – this is a film that resonates, its images and ideas lingering long after you leave the cinema.

LIKE A BROTHER (COMME UN FRERE) Dirs: Bernard Alapetite & Cyril Legann, France, 2005, video, 55 mins

Dir: Tim Kirkman, USA, 2005, 35mm, 94 mins

French with English subtitles Sebastian is a frustrated 17-year-old, unable to come out to his family or friends. With a serious crush on his friend Romain, and saddled with a girlfriend he’s forced into dating out of peer group pressure, Sebastian decides to move to Paris. Changing his name to Zach, he creates a new image and cruises the clubs for hot guys. When Romain phones him a year later Zach’s feelings for his friend resurface, forcing him to reevaluate the past 12 months. Cleverly intercutting three different time periods in the turbulent life of our hero, from the repressed days of his hometown, to the sexually charged scenes of his life living it up in La Marais, Like a Brother is a short, sharp and sexy glimpse at a gay rite of passage. (PT)

Loggerheads is a gently unfolding drama that slowly reveals the intertwining stories of disparate wellrealised characters: Mark, the gorgeous young drifter who has come to town to watch nesting loggerhead turtles; George, the handsome motel owner who discovers Mark sleeping on the beach; Grace, the woman who seeks the long lost son who she gave up for adoption at seventeen; and the conservative minister and his wife who are intolerant of their gay neighbours. Loggerheads grapples with a range of issues including alienation, community acceptance and tolerance.

LOVING ANNABELLE

A LOVE TO HIDE (UN AMOUR A TAIRE)

Australian Premiere

Dir: Katherine Brooks, USA, 2006, video, 76 mins

Dir: Christian Faure, France, 2005, video, 103 mins

Warning: Contains scenes which may distress some viewers

In the 1931 lesbian movie Maidens in Uniform, screening at this year’s MQFF, a young girl is sent off to a boarding school for girls, where she soon develops a crush on everyone’s favorite female teacher. This now-classic tale of forbidden love gets a sexy and modern retelling in Katherine Brooks’ latest film, Loving Annabelle. 74 years after Maidens in Uniform shocked audiences, social contempt for inter-generational love persists. While the love affair in Maidens in Uniform remains unrequited, Brooks’ film delves into deeper terrain, exploring the sexual and emotional relationship between the teacher and student. What is depicted as a schoolgirl crush in Maidens in Uniform becomes a full-bodied steamy affair in Loving Annabelle. Annabelle is the daughter of a famous senator and a rebel who refuses to accept the school’s rules and discipline. Simone is a gifted and devoted young poetry teacher who falls in love with Annabelle despite her efforts to ignore the obvious attraction between the two, and she finds that Annabelle quickly unlocks the passion that has lay dormant within her since her teenage years. Loving Annabelle is an intense and tight retelling of the taboo of student teacher love, and is made all the more pleasing with a cast that is extremely easy on the eye. (LD)

French with English subtitles Paris 1942, and the French capital is under Nazi occupation. The Lavandier family owns a prosperous laundry and on the surface it seems that the clan is unified in a single purpose, but the truth is far darker. Jean, the heir to the business has a lover, Philippe, unbeknownst to his parents and brother, Jacques. When a family friend, Sara, turns up asking Jean for shelter he’s fearful that the Gestapo will kill her and offers her a bed in Philippe’s apartment. When Sara is offered a job in the laundry, for a brief time life is wonderful for the three unexpected friends, however the spectre of disaster looms large. It is only a matter of time before their life of happiness is cruelly snatched away as they become pawns in one of history’s most shameful and brutal episodes. This emotionally powerful story is a perfect compliment to the documentary Paragraph 175 which dealt with gay persecution during the Nazi era. Handsomely produced and wonderfully acted, A Love to Hide is a nuanced French drama that is at times quite shocking and will generate strong reactions. (PT)

THE MASSEUR (MASAHISTA) MAIDENS IN UNIFORM (MÄDCHEN IN UNIFORM) Dir: Leontine Sagan, Germany, 1931, 16mm, 88 mins German with English subtitles One of the earlier talkies out of Germany, Maidens in Uniform is an emotionally draining melodrama with an all-female cast. Set in an authoritarian Prussian boarding school, the story revolves around a vulnerable and sensitive 14-year-old orphan, Manuela, and the popular teacher, Fräulein von Bernburg, who is more tender and loving than other staff members and therefore gains the affections of all the students. The Fräulein offers Manuela her love despite the school’s policy of forming no emotional attachments with the students. While its release date precludes any direct depiction of lesbianism, the film’s subtle allusions to lesbian desire are not to be denied. The film’s content is still provocative and relevant today (see Loving Annabelle p.33) and also offers a sweeping indictment against the oppressive morals of the time. The film’s value remains as both a rare film about women’s issues and as an historical record of Germany in the 1930s. It was originally banned in Germany and because of increasing government pressure on director Leontine Sagan, who became an exile two years after the film was completed.

Presented in association with the Goethe Institute.

Dir: Brillante Mendoza, The Philippines, 2005, 35mm, 80 mins Tagalog/Pampango with English subtitles Winner of the Best Film (digital) at the prestigious Locarno Film Festival, The Masseur is a provocative new film from The Philippines. Twenty-year old Iliac works as a masseur at an all-male parlour in Manila, fighting for customers with the dozen or so other young nubile, eager boys on offer. When he scores a job with a romance writer he is anxious to make as much money as he can, in any way possible. With the massage booths separated by paper-thin walls the sounds and smells permeate each room, but Iliac is single-minded in his purpose. As the night progresses the clothes come off and the rising exchange of money sets the stage for a battlefield of the senses. While the sex scenes befit a narrative set in a massage parlour, the film never becomes a lurid, exploitation piece. True, there is a palpable level of sexual tension but first time filmmaker Brillante Mendoza masterfully inter-cuts the increasingly intimate massage with Illac’s father’s funeral, and all the emotional and psychological terrain that it uncovers. Adding to the depth of intrigue is Iliac’s increasingly irritated girlfriend, waiting in a cab outside the parlour. (PT)

MRS STEVENS HEARS THE MERMAIDS SINGING Dir: Linda Thornburg, USA, 2005, video, 120 mins

MY BROTHER NIKHIL

Based on May Sarton’s semi-autobiographical 1964 novel, the film (and book) tells the story of 70 year old poet, Hilary Stevens, who suddenly becomes famous after nearly 50 years of writing. Rendered with flashbacks, Mrs. Steven’s life mirrors the struggles of women to gain suffrage, sexual liberation, and independence during WWII, the witch-hunts of the 1950s and the changes in consciousness of the 1960s that link a new generation to Mrs. Stevens. Through interviews with muses and reporters Mrs. Stevens reveals her lesbian relationships creating a thoroughly satisfying film.

Dir: Onir, India, 2005, 35mm, 117 mins Nikhil (Sanjay Suri) is the golden boy of Goa. Unreservedly loved by his family, he is the state swimming champion and worshipped by all, but his world comes crashing down when he is diagnosed HIV+ and is forced by law into isolation. This is India in the late 80s, a time when information about the disease was sketchy and fear was the overriding emotion. When his parents and friends turn their back on him, Nikhil’s circle of support is limited to his partner and his sister. As he struggles with his illness Nikhil craves the love and support of his disapproving father, hopeful of a reunion before the disease takes him. Made on the fringes of the Indian filmmaking system with obvious love and passion, My Brother Nikhil has won a number of audience awards at queer film festivals around the world and you can see why, as it is an unashamedly melodramatic piece of entertainment that packs an emotional punch. Sprinkled throughout with a number of low-key music numbers, this low budget film is the flip-side to the superficiality sometimes found in Bollywood films. (PT)

The life of controversial young artist Manny Yates is shattered when murder penetrates his close knit circle of friends, causing him to question those friendships, life in general, and all the relationships around him. Hamilton, a hunky gay detective with an attitude and an agenda, is on the case in more ways than one. Dir: Manuel Gómez Pereira, Spain, 2005, 35mm, 107 mins Spanish with English subtitles It’s the mass wedding of the century: twenty gay Spaniards set to take the altar and enter the nation’s history books. Standing square on the shoulders of classic screwball comedies, Queens is a savvy ensemble comedy about five mothers struggling to cope with the drama of their gay sons’ nuptials. Central to the high jinx of the tension-packed weekend before the wedding is highly-strung nymphomaniac Nuria, whose son Narciso is due to marry jittery Hugo. But Nuria’s proclivity for sex spells trouble when she finds herself alone with any man – gay or straight. The wedding is to be held at a classy Madrid hotel run by Magda, whose designer son Miguel is to marry Argentinean Oscar, whose mother, Ofelia, is outstaying her welcome in Madrid. Plot lines quickly enmesh in a romp as camp as any Carry On flick, and as urgent as Almodovar’s best.

Sévigné revolves around Júlia Berkowitz (the gorgeous Anna Azcona), a celebrated theatre director, who finds herself at a crossroads in both her professional and private lives. Should she direct something safe and guaranteed to put bums on seats or take a chance on much riskier fare? And should she ditch her intellectual husband and also her lover in favour of a relationship with said riskier fare’s writer (Balletbò-Coll)? Pacy and wry, the film creeps up on you, much like Balletbò-Coll herself, who at first seems an unlikely romantic heroine, but whose charms slowly become apparent, both to Júlia and the audience. THIRD MAN OUT: A DONALD STRACHEY MYSTERY

THREE DANCING SLAVES (LE CLAN) Dir: Gaël Morel, France, 2004, 35mm, 90 mins

Dir: Ron Oliver, USA, 2005, video, 95 mins

French with English subtitles

Chad Allen stars as gay detective Donald Strachey in the first episode of this upcoming gritty series of TV crime stories based on the popular novels by author Richard Stevenson. This first instalment, Third Man Out follows Strachey through upstate New York as he works on solving crimes while facing walls of opposition from members of the local police force. Strachey is commissioned to protect gay activist John Rutka, known for outing prominent citizens. Strachey abandons bodyguard duty when he feels that Rutka is staging the threats against him. When Rutka turns up dead, Strachey is faced with an extensive list of enemies all with enough motive to kill. A second episode Ice Blues is currently in production and is set to premiere in the US some time in 2006.

Three Dancing Slaves is an absorbing, and often unpredictable look at the lives of 3 French brothers adrift in a world of crime, sex and ennui. A favourite on the GLBTI film festival circuit, this film from Gaël Morel (Wild Reeds) is a powerful, sexually charged study of masculinity. In provincial France three siblings are dealing with their mother’s death in different ways: Marc chases petty drug deals with his lay-about friends; Olivier, insular and shy, confesses his feelings to a photo of his mother; and Christophe, fresh from being released from prison, is determined to stay on the right side of the law and secure a steady job. Marc, in particular, is hell-bent on destruction, quarrelling with a rival gang and unhealthily obsessed with his physical appearance. With his shaved head and hard, sculptured body he is unashamedly fetishised by the camera: he’s a raw, sexual creature wound so tight you are never sure what he will do next. Giving too much plot away would spoil this little gem with its unexpected twists and turns, so if you adore French drama then you’ll be captivated by Three Dancing Slaves. (PT)

TWO GIRLS (IKI GENC KIZ) Dir: Kutlag Ataman, Turkey, 2005, 35mm, 107 mins Turkish with English subtitles A vibrant drama of teenage life in modern Turkey, Ataman’s third feature is a gritty, energetic affair, based on Perihan Magden’s controversial best-selling novel. Ataman already has a strong reputation for offering a sympathetic voice to the disaffected and disenfranchised (see Lola + Bilidikid MQFF 2000) - so this tale of troubled teenagers is in good hands. Behiye is angry and rebellious, but her frequent outbursts cut little ice with her conservative family. Handan is trapped in a different way, in a love-hate relationship with her single mother Leman. Although Leman is willing to turn tricks to raise Handan’s college fees, she’s otherwise hopeless with both men and money. When a mutual friend introduces Behiye and Handan they immediately hit it off, and despite the differences in their backgrounds they embark on an intense relationship, and with it a secret plan to escape their dysfunctional families. Aside from eliciting convincing performances, Ataman brings a distinctive and contemporary look to the film, underpinned by a driving score by Replikas. SESSION 10 MAR

Dir: Joaquin Oristrell, Spain/Portugal/Italy/ Germany, 2005, video, 108 mins Spanish with English subtitles An uptight doctor and his feminist sister-in-law search for a missing man in buttoned-down 1913 Barcelona, but soon discover a lurid world of porn shoots, transvestite parties, and psychoanalysis in this quick-witted Spanish farce about the totems and taboos of the well-dressed repressed. The lovely, aggressively modern Alma has a problem: her Freud-obsessed husband has disappeared, and her only help is her brother-in-law, the strikingly lambchopped yet rather dull Salvador. Ignorant of Wilde, Freud, and modernist movements, Salvador distrusts psychoanalysis most of all, a feeling that hardens when he and Alma begin their Sherlock Holmes-like investigation. Discovering a hidden milieu of roleplaying masochists, cross-dressing socialites, and illicit heroin parlors bubbling under polite Barcelona society, the two psycho-sleuths also uncover their own repressed desires, and a secret of truly Freudian proportions. Like a Masterpiece Theatre episode written by early Almodóvar, Unconscious revels in digging up the desires and perversions tucked away in stuffy costume dramas. With detectives like these, Unconscious gives modernity a hilarious twist. (Frameline Film Festival 2005) SESSION 40

Middle Eastern politics and the hugely topical issue of the plight of asylum seekers form the backdrop for this gripping drama from the director of 1997 MQFF lesbian favourite Everything Will Be Fine. Fleeing Iran where she was persecuted for her lesbianism, Fariba (an astonishing performance from Jasmin Tabatabai) assumes the identity of a fellow refugee after his sudden death. Adapting to her new life as a man is hard enough, but the complexity of her situation is only compounded when she falls for a sympathetic German woman. A thoughtful and intelligent examination of identity and what it’s like to be on the receiving end of both racial and sexual vilification, this is a timely and powerful piece from Maccarone. (MS)

When Dora’s Polish refugee neighbour Jolanta mistakenly believes she has accidentally killed her boss, she begs Dora to hide her in her apartment. Dora reluctantly agrees and soon finds herself falling for her neighbour’s sexy curves and feminine guile. When it becomes public knowledge that Jolanta is in the clear, Dora has become so attached to her secret roommate that she delays revealing the truth, further extending Jolanta’s stay in her home. A YEAR WITHOUT LOVE (UN AÑO SIN AMOR) Dir: Anahi Berneri, Argentina, 2005, 35mm, 95 mins Spanish with English subtitles

WHEN I’M 64 Dir: Jon Jones, UK, 2004, video, 87 mins Ray’s life is in a rut: a former soccer hooligan, he spends his days caring for his grandkids, working part-time as a cabbie and generally missing his wife who has been dead for eight years. One day his fare is Jim, who has just retired from the school he has taught at for over 40 years. When Jim leaves his jacket in the cab, Ray finds a notebook and opens it in search of a return address, and discovers a ‘wish list’: to fall in love and to see the world. These few words spark something inside the widower and although the two men come from different sides of the tracks and have seemingly nothing in common, a tentative friendship strikes up, which eventually leads to events neither had expected. This exceptional film from the BBC is a groundbreaking look at love and how it can strike when you least expect. Superbly acted by the two leads, British TV stalwarts Alun Armstrong and Paul Freeman, When I’m 64 is a beautifully realised and heartfelt film. Surrender to the beguiling charm of Ray and Jim’s journey and you will leave the cinema with a great big smile on your face. A Festival highlight. (PT) SESSION 81 MAR

HIV positive, in failing health and looking for love in all the wrong places, Pablo’s journey is epic, erotic, daunting and inspiring. It’s 1996, and the young poet has had some success with his writing though still relies on his father’s financial help. He’s beset by difficulty in every sphere of his life and is confronted by a grim publishing industry where poetry doesn’t make money. He sets out to teach French as an income spinner and has some success. His health concerns do not inhibit the high octane sex life that he discovers through gay personals and the local sex SM clubs in a thriving leather scene. Disillusioned with prescription drug multinationals, he changes doctors, as he is averse to AZT treatment, preferring homeopathy and a healthy diet. However, when his CD4 count hits 100, his life takes a nosedive. He sets out to publish the brooding diary he has written for one very long year - A Year Without Love. It creates some tragic family resentment, but by then he finds that his life has turned a very big corner. (PA)

FEATURES YAJI AND KITA: THE MIDNIGHT PILGRIMS Dir: Kankuro Kudo, Japan, 2005, 35mm, 124 mins Japanese with English subtitles Are you ready for the first gay-samurai-musical-road movie? If any film defies description it is Yaji and Kita but it will quite possibly be the most dizzyingly enjoyable two hours you will spend in a cinema this Festival! Think Monkey injected with steroids with the music amped up to 11. From drug-induced hallucinations to drag shows at the base of Mt Fuji, Yaji and Kita mixes time periods and genre with reckless abandon in telling its tale of two gay lovers on the road to enlightenment. In austere black and white we fade into a domestic scene in Edo, in feudal Japan. Yaji awakens from a nightmare where multiple versions of his wife and gay lover, Kita, appear floating down a river, only to disappear. Kita sits in the corner of the room shooting up, desperate to escape the dullness of his life. The pair opens a card promising a new ‘reality’ at Ise, and the lovers decide to hit the road in an effort to kick the drugs and start a new life together. In a dramatic change of pace and scenery (not to mention a switch to colour) the guys dance their way out of town, with the help of the entire village, singing WANTED! UNVEILED ‘Born to be Gay’. They mount a Harley and roar off down a highway in search of a better life, unaware of the (NACHBARINNEN!) insanity and unpredictability that the road ahead holds… (FREMDE HAUT) Franziska Climb aboard with Dir: Angelina Maccarone, Yaji and Kita:Germany/Austria, the Midnight Pilgrims forDir: a pure cinematicMeletzky, adrenalin Germany, rush. 100% HUMAN (100% MENNESKE) Dirs: Trond Winterkjær & Jan Dalchow, Norway, 2005, video, 73 mins Norwegian with English subtitles You may think you’ve seen one or two documentaries about male to female transsexuals. But we bet you’ve never seen anything quite like this fascinating genrehopping affair from Scandinavia. Monica was only 22 when she decided to have the full surgery to change her from Morten for good. And she did it all on camera – with the love and support of her mother, who should wind up a poster-girl for PFLAG after this! The film uses elements of Monica’s personal video diary, traditional documentary filmmaking and re-enacted scenes… And, oh yes, did we mention that every so often Monica breaks into song to describe her feelings more melodically? Cycles of Porn is a highly explicit digi-feature from German director Jochen Hick, who made the compelling documentary Sex/Life in LA. Depicted is a ruthless and unrelenting industry, beset with false hopes, perfect bodies and low pay. We meet some of the sexy newbies who are housed in a Big Brother style complex, replete with all the latest video audio technology, with many of its bizarre rooms on cam 24/7 and beamed live on the internet. Lashings of revealing interviews, profiling the porn stars and the league of creatives who make the sumptuous porn that has made COLT gay adult entertainment a household name. 39 cowboys played ‘big’ parts in the making of Buckleroos, arguably one of the most ambitious US porn features ever made. Buckleroos is a raunchy western, with good guys, bad guys, show downs, hung gunslinger action, bar brawls, horny young Mormon twinks who lose their virginity and all the raunch on the ranch you could ever imagine or ever hope for. If you thought Brokeback Mountain was great, then you will love this revealing flick – a sexy shoot-em-up cowboy feature that leaves no hunky jock unturned. Interviewees in this breathtaking exposé recount candid stories and anecdotes about auditions, industry highs and lows, pre-sex nerves, sex on set, sex off camera and just about everything you always wanted to know about porn but were too afraid to ask. Two men, one woman and a baby constitute the formula for the alternative family portrayed in this fascinating documentary. Dafna is a single straight musician, who is fed up with waiting for Mr. Right, and is desperate to have a child. The solution to her dilemma presents itself when her gay friend Itamar and his partner Kai approach her to have a child with them. All appears to go well for a while until mid-way through Dafna’s pregnancy unresolved feelings and unfettered jealousies threaten to turn the situation into a nightmare. Itamar and Kai get married in Germany and shortly after Dafna gives birth to a baby boy in Israel. Tensions that have been simmering burst to the surface, causing confrontation and separation to their alternative family unit. DOCUMENTARIES GAY REPUBLICANS Dir: Wash Westmoreland, USA, 2004, video, 63 mins From the famed stables of the World of Wonder production house (101 Rent Boys, The Eyes of Tammy Faye) comes this fascinating documentary about the anguished decisions facing gay men and women who have identified themselves as Republican during the growing war over gay marriage in the US. Pariahs to many in the gay community, Log Cabin Republicans have been likened to Jewish Nazis or black Ku Klux Klansmen, but things are not that black and white. Mark Harris is a Republican before he’s gay, visiting the Reagan Presidential Library once a year and arguing vociferously with liberals. Maurice Bonamigo, a high-class hairdresser from Palm Beach, provides jaw-droppingly inadvertent comic relief, seeming to formulate his politics based on petty selfishness and the nice suits that Bush Sr. and Reagan wore. Westmoreland sets his film in the tense buildup to the Log Cabin’s crucial decision whether or not to endorse Bush in 2004, and their struggle will leave even dedicated lefties hanging breathlessly on the outcome. Dir: Joseph Lovett, USA, 2005, video, 70 mins Finally, a compelling documentary that fearlessly and unapologetically lifts the lid on the 1970s gay sexual revolution. The scene is New York - pre condoms. Set against the backdrop of the Stonewall riots, a radical gay liberation emerged in an era ignited by a spirited, angry and orgiastic counterculture. Men from around the world flocked to NYC in the aftermath of Stonewall. It became a gay Babylon and these are its stories. It was a time when men kissing, holding hands, groping in a quick orgy or even a weekend long fuckfest became a political act. This sexy doco chronicles an era with riveting first hand testimonials. Notable interviewees include the iconic gay writer Larry Kramer, photographer Tom Bianchi, porn Director Bob Alverez, activist Rodger McFarlane, and artist Barton Benes. KEEP NOT SILENT: ORTHODYKES Dir: Ilil Alexander, Israel, 2004, video, 52 mins

WOMEN IN LOVE

Hebrew with English subtitles Winner of the Israeli Oscar for Best Documentary this stunning film chronicles the lives of three lesbian women who struggle with their passion to love other women. A love that is at odds with Jewish religion and is strongly opposed within the tightknit social fabric that is Jerusalem. Their saving grace is OrthoDykes, a community support group to which they belong. They lead secret lives and are divided between this clandestine coterie of lesbian proteges and strict doctrines of Orthodox belief. Courageously, Yudith, the daughter of a Rabbi, is open and out, and believes in honesty above all else. Ruth has permission from her husband to have a relationship with another woman. Miriam Ester is contemptuous of her husband’s affection and is constantly sacrificing her own needs for the sake of her ten children and extended family. All three are piously devout and have great compassion for their respected religious leaders who mistakenly espouse a God that did not incorporate homosexuality in the grand plan. Alexander poignantly portrays their extremes of pain, with humility and an exacting sensitivity. (PA) Plus:

Dir: Karen Everett, USA, 2005, video, 59 mins Award-winning lesbian filmmaker Karen Everett (My Femme Divine) turns the camera on herself once more, in this intensely introspective, raw, and fearless autobiographical documentary that delves into the difficult terrain of love, romance, relationships, sex, polyamory, self-defined family, and how one lesbian tries to juggle the various aspects of her life. Beginning in the 1980s and culled from nearly 250 hours of home videos, candid interviews, and video diaries, Everett captures a lesbian sexual renaissance that was taking place in sex positive San Francisco in the midst of the AIDS epidemic. While we are privy to all the juicy, sexy details, we also follow Everett on a personal journey that includes self-doubt, painful loneliness, and heartbreak. Everett appeals to the voyeur in us all as she unapologetically films even the most sacred and intimate moments to bring her own experience of lesbian life to the screen. (LD) Plus:

SPECIAL DO I LOOK FAT? Dir: Travis Mathews, USA, 2005, dvd, 58 mins Gay male body image and eating disorders are put under the microscope in this timely documentary. While multinationals, advertising and the spindoctors in today’s highly conservative gay media have us believing we should all look like Calvin Klein models, the real diversity of gay/male body types is hidden from everyday representation and a cogent circumspection. To add insult to injury, the truth surrounding this spectrum of body types is demonised, even despised by these self appointed arbiters of taste in their hysterical pursuit of ideal bodies. This is especially so for gay men who happen to be portly, chubby or plain old fashioned fat. This mustsee documentary helps allay our fears and assuages our collective neuroses. It questions the fears, the anxieties and anomalies surrounding the gay male body in crisis, the eating disorders that plague men and the ever foolish, misguided search for an idealised perfection in an imperfect world. SPECIAL PURSUIT OF EQUALITY Dirs: Geoff Callan & Mike Shaw, USA, 2005, video, 75 mins On February 12, 2004, the City of San Francisco made history by issuing same-sex marriage licenses. Led by Mayor Gavin Newsom, the city continued to marry gay and lesbian couples until the California Supreme Court issued an immediate halt on March 11, 2004. Over 3,900 couples were married, the inevitable national debate began to rage, and directors Geoff Callan and Mike Shaw were there to record the entire affair in this groundbreaking and award winning documentary. With Australia in the midst of its own battle with the Howard Government’s manifest objection to marriage for non-heterosexuals, as well as the issue sitting high on the social and political agenda across various parts of the globe, there has never been a more appropriate time to screen such a film with a star-studded line-up of panel of experts to debate the topic.

Co-presented by the ‘Equal Love’ campaign for relationship recognition, part of the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby. www.vglrl.org.au

“I do” or “I don’t”? Where do you stand on this important issue of our times? Almost every Western country has adopted some form of gay marriage or civil union scheme for same-sex couples. But during the 2004 Federal election, the Howard Government and the ALP banned same-sex marriage. Do same sex attracted people want marriage? Is it politically impossible? What are the alternatives? SENIORS’ SENIORS’ FESTIVAL Melbourne Queer Film Festival are pleased to bring you this co-presentation with the Seniors’ Film Festival 2006, and proudly presented by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image & the Department of Victorian Communities.

STAGE BEAUTY Dir: Richard Eyre, UK/Germany/USA, 2004, 35mm, 110 mins

Courtesy Dendy Films Set in 1660s London, Richard Eyre’s wonderfully entertaining costume drama is both richly humorous and unexpectedly touching. In an era when women were forbidden from appearing on the stage, Edward ‘Ned’ Kynaston (Billy Crudup) takes up the mantle of London’s most celebrated ‘leading lady’. When the capricious Charles II (Rupert Everett, in fine form) revokes the ‘men only’ rule, Ned finds his status as darling of the theatre world challenged by female

wannabes waiting in the wings. Claire Danes, Tom Wilkinson and Ben Chaplin all shine in an excellent supporting cast. “The most fun I’ve had with the Bard since that Oscar winner (Shakespeare in Love)” The New York Daily News Booking information: A limited number of seats are expected to be available at the door prior to the session. Telephone bookings are, however, strongly recommended and may be made on 8663 2583 from 10 am on Monday 20 February 2006.
