MQHYA by Cat Guenther

Catherine Tata

For this issue’s Youth Spotlight, I had the chance to talk with Catherine Tata. Catherine is a recently graduated high school senior who is planning to attend Schoolcraft College this fall. She hopes to then transfer to Michigan State University. Catherine currently shows her horse “Surely Im Invited” aka Rummy in Horsemanship, Western Pleasure, Trail, Equitation, Showmanship, and Halter. Catherine and Rummy have had many accomplishments together, including winning the 2016 Thayne Minor Horsemanship Class at the MQHYA Spartan Spectacular, winning AllAround High Point at the Novice Championships, and recently placing 4th in the Performance Halter Mares at the AQHYA World Show! I asked Catherine to describe her show partner and she said, “Rummy is one of the sweetest horses you can nd. She loves her porta coolers, magna wave, and theraplate. She’ll always fall asleep in front of the fans and is known to turn the theraplate up on her own.” I also asked Catherine what her experience was like at the 2016 AQHYA World Show and she replied, “I had a great time at the World Show. I do have to say it’s really intimidating to be competing with the best riders, but it’s a super fun show. Advice I would give is to have fun; you get lost in the moment and start to panic, but you need to breathe and remember that you can do it.”

Alyvia Dixon & Lucy

is 12 years old and will be a Alyvia Dixon 7th grade student at Gull Lake Middle school. As long as she can remember she has been around horses. Her 5 year old mare If Onley, “Lucy” and Alyvia have been together almost 2 years. They show in Hunter Under Saddle, Showmanship and this is their irst year showing Equitation. Alyvia also enjoys cross country and volleyball, but her love of showing her horse has always been her top priority. She hopes to compete at the Congress and youth world show in the future. Alyvia hoped to have this cover as a way to celebrate her birthday, September 19th. Happy Birthday girlie girl!! Here’s to many more successes in the years to come. Love, Mom and Dad

Palm Partnership Training™

How to Put Your Horse in Balance through Proper Bending – Part I Have you ever ridden a horse on a curve or a circle and felt the horse speed up, lose his balance and not be able to follow the path of the curve or the circle? You may have been asking your horse to trot in a curved arc over logs in a trail class, lope a circle in a horsemanship pattern or ride a turn on a hunter course. If you've had this experience chances are your horse was making every effort to do what you asked, however he may not have been asked to maintain a proper bend to allow him to be balanced and keep a steady tempo to his gait on the curve or circle. This week's “How to Put Your Horse in Balance Through Proper Bending” PPT Training Tips will describe what a proper bend looks like and the aids sequence to ask your horse to bend properly. Look forward to many successes with your horses once you've mastered how to communicate to bend properly! The Bend – What does a horse look like when he has a proper bend in his body? If you look at the horse from an “overhead view” – that is if you were viewing the horse directly above him, you would see that from his poll to the top of his tail there would be a slight arc to his body. If you were riding your horse to the right you would see the horse's head and neck slightly bent to the right. When you're riding the horse you'll just be able to see the corner of the horse's right eye when traveling right. The horse's spine will be slightly arced, and the horse will be bent around your right leg, and supported with your outside aids. Please note that many riders think correct bending of the horse is just bending the head and neck. When you only ask the horse to bend his head and neck you only bend the head and neck and not the rest of the horse's body. This can hurt a horse; and when done extensively, can build a horse with a rubber neck (too flexible) that will always lose his balance. Bending a horse properly is bending the horse through his entire body from his poll (top of the head) to his dock (top of the tail). What is the Relationship between Bending and Balance? When the horse is balanced, he will have a proper bend to his body as we discussed above. When a horse is not properly bent on a curve he will be unbalanced and increase or decrease speed which in turn may cause you to lose your balance. When the horse is properly bent, you'll find it easy to steer or guide your horse because he is responding to lighter aids, to keep the same speed and to feel the horse move with free-flowing strides. Remember: No bend = No balance | Bend = Balance Bending Aids Sequence – To allow your horse to bend properly on a curve you'll need to understand and follow a correct aids sequence to get the best responses from your horse. Both legs and both reins have to act together in order to achieve control of your horse's body. By practicing the correct aids sequence you'll be able to automatically adjust your aids to feel what you need to do to keep your horse bent properly. I'll describe the bending aids sequence as you're riding to the right. You'll first start with the inside right leg aid on a curve. You'll want to do this at a walk first so you can get the feel of what you're asking from your horse. Your right leg will be first in the sequence with the activity right behind the girth. The active right leg will ask your horse to compress his body slightly inward so he starts to bend. www.MIQuarterHorse.com

Your rein aid has to come second because it controls from the horse's poll to the withers. Your right rein or inside rein on the curve has to be next in the aids sequence to slightly flex your horse's head to the right which will then slightly bend the neck through the shoulder to get the forehand to bend correctly. To flex the horse's head, you have two different rein aids; either the open rein or the indirect rein (against the neck). The open rein is used to ask for a slight bend of the head and neck, and the rein against the neck is used if a horse wants to bend the head and neck too much to the inside – in this case to bend too much to the right. The open rein is used so there is no pulling on the horse's mouth. The hand moves sideways for the horse to give to the bit and flex the head to the right. If the horse turns to the right when using the open rein, use your indirect rein for the horse to yield to the pressure against the neck, which also moves the head inward. This will also flex the head right. The inside leg and the inside rein are the two active aids used to bend the horse. Next in the aids sequence you'll use your outside left leg and left rein aid to support the bend of the horse. The left leg keeps his hips from going out on the curve. The left rein keeps the shoulder from going out or the head bending too far to the inside. You'll use your outside or left leg slightly further back than the position of your right leg. You'll use a light pressure with your outside leg to keep the hips from swinging out. Your outside leg will keep the horse's hips slightly inward to create the curve from the withers to the top of the tail. The outside indirect rein is used against the neck to support the balance of the forehand. Your inside aids are the active aids which create the horse's bend. Your outside aids support the horse bending through the curve so he stays balanced. Bending Aids Sequence – “How to” Active Bending Aids 1. Use light or vibrating pressure with the inside leg to ask the horse to bend his body. 2. Using an open or indirect neck rein, to flex the head slightly in the direction of travel to create an arc from the withers to the poll. Supporting Bending Aids 3. Move the outside leg slightly back behind the girth to keep the hips from swinging out. 4. Bring the outside rein against the neck to keep the shoulder from going out on the curve and also to keep the head from going too far inside the curve. Key Point – When you are able to bend your horse correctly on a curve you will achieve a balanced horse. There's no greater feeling than a happier and more willing horse! In the next Training Tips we'll continue with several different exercises to train your horse to bend correctly. If you would like more step by step guidance for achieving a proper bend you will really enjoy Palm Partnership Training's “How to put Your Horse in Proper Balance Through Bending” Parts I and II. http://shop.lynnpalm.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/33/produ cts_id/135 http://shop.lynnpalm.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/33/produ cts_id/136 “Keep one leg on one side, the other leg on the other side, and your mind in the middle.” Henry Taylor MQHA Journal • September/October 2016 • 5

2016 MQHA NYATT TEAM All American Quarter Horse Congress October 6-30, 2016 • Columbus, Ohio

Audrey Barnes

My name is Audrey Barnes. I am 13 years old and I am in 8th grade. I have shown in the Michigan Quarter Horse Youth Association (MQHYA) for 2 years. I am currently the treasurer of the youth board. When not showing my horses, I enjoy playing basketball, participating in track and hanging out with my friends.

Charlotte Chubb I am an 18 year old from Richland, Michigan and recently graduated from Gull Lake High School. I moved to Michigan from the United Kingdom almost nine years ago and knew as soon as I moved here that I wanted to try riding horses. After taking my first lesson at the age of 11, I knew that I had found my passion and have never looked back. I started showing a short time after and became hooked to the atmosphere, intensity, and competition of the show pen. My horse “Indy” and I started showing at Quarter Horse shows last year and I have loved it ever since the beginning. I am so grateful and honored to have been given the opportunity to represent the MQHA at the All American Quarter Horse Congress this year. www.MIQuarterHorse.com

Madison Burlett 14 year old Madison Burlett completed her 8th grade as an honor roll student and has now started her freshman year at Chelsea High School. When not busy with her horse show schedule, Madison competes in cross country, track, playing catch with her brother, riding go-carts in addition to swimming, reading and baking. Seven years ago, she began riding and showing Invitation to Dream in Small Fry and 13 & Under instructed by Becky Schooler. Currently she is showing her five-year-old gelding, Im Too Sleepy with numerous circuit champions and multiple points in performance halter and showmanship along with Top 3 at NSBA World in HUS. Madison is continuing her training with Beckey, Becca Hurst and Kyle Doughtery, they will start adding Equitation and Horsemanship to their talent wheel. Madison lives in Chelsea, Michigan and is supported in all her endeavors by her mother Susan, step-dad Stevens, and her brother Matt.

Maggie Dekraker My name is Maggie Dekraker, I’m 19 and I have been showing horses for 7 years. I started out doing 4-H and loved it, but I wanted to go bigger so that is when I decided to start doing quarter horse shows. I have only been showing Cudda Invited Me for two years now. He is a 7-year-old bay gelding. I show him in showmanship, western pleasure, hunter under saddle, horsemanship, and equitation. This year we have been working on adding the trail and western riding, but we are still not quite ready to show in those events yet. Cudda started off being kind of a tough horse for me, but the more I rode, the better we got and we make a great team. This year is my last year showing as a youth and I would not want to do it with any other horse than Cudda! MQHA Journal • September/October 2016 • 12

Lance Matthews Lance Matthews is from Conklin, MI and currently attends Coopersville High School as a sophomore. Lance has been involved in horses from a very young age. His family previously showed on the ApHC circuit, but up until recently has mainly enjoyed trail riding the family’s horses. Through the school’s Equestrian Team Program in both junior high and now high school, Lance has re-entered the show scene focusing on speed events. Lance has only had his new Quarter Horse “Phyl” for a little over a year, but has enjoyed running him in both NBHA and smaller local shows. Lance also is active in band, paintball and really likes late 1960’s Chevelles. MQHA Journal • September/October 2016 • 13

I am showing a new mare this year, Got My Swag On or “Lola.” I got her in April and have enjoyed getting to know her over the show season! We have been competing in Western Pleasure, Showmanship, Horsemanship, and Performance Halter Mares under the guidance of Christie Showerman.

Lily Atkinson

Peyton Baxter

My name is Lily Atkinson. I am 17 years old and a senior at Grand Haven High School. I competed on the NYATT team in 2013 and 2014 with my mare, Mighty Pretty Storm, “Harley” in barrels. I now also have a gelding, Invitations Are Good, “Truman,” who I now show as an all-around horse in shows through MQHA. Although I have only shown him in the QH circuit for the last two years, we have also competed at the Congress and the 2016 Novice Championships and had great success. I’m excited for the 50th anniversary of the Congress and wish everyone best of luck!

Hi, my name is Peyton Baxter. I am a 7th grader at East Rockford Middle School in Rockford, MI. I have been riding horses since I was 6 years old. Besides showing horses, I also enjoy playing basketball for my 7th grade middle school team, sewing, and hanging out with my friends. I’m on the principal’s honor roll at school. I will be showing my gelding, Fightin Off Sleep on the NYATT Team at the Congress I am honored to be representing Michigan in Ohio!

Emme Lantis Hello, I’m Emme Lantis. I am 13 years old and in the 8th grade at Corunna High School. I have been showing quarter horses for the past four years. I’m an active member of the MQHYA Board where I enjoy helping at all the horse shows. I also participate in many school sports including swimming, volleyball, track, and golf. I also serve on the student council. I will be competing at Congress with my best friend “Charlies Lil Leaguer” also known as Billy. We will represent the MSBA NYATT team in showmanship. We will also be competing in the all-around events under the guidance of Michelle McCarthy-Warda. I would like to give a big thanks to my grandparents, mom, and Michelle for making this all possible. I would also like to thank the MSBA for sponsoring the NYATT team and providing this opportunity. Good luck to everyone at the Congress! www.MIQuarterHorse.com

Miller Lantis Hello, my name is Miller Lantis. I am sixteen years old and currently attend Corunna High School. I am vice president of my class, have a GPA of 4.25, and I am part of the varsity track team and basketball team. One of my main passions, however, is showing horses. I have been showing for six years now, four of which have been at the AQHA level. My showing partner is a 2011 gelding, Hes A Lazy Lover (aka Tosh). Together, Tosh and I compete in the allaround. In previous years, I have had the opportunity to compete on the MQHYA World Team and the MQHYA NYATT. The experience was one that I will never forget. I cannot wait to make more memories at the upcoming NYATT. Good luck and best wishes to call the competitors!

Rilynn Lindsay

Alicia Ritsema

Hello, I am Rilynn Kalis Lindsay. I am 10 years old and live in Dryden, MI with my mother, Danielle, and my father, Ryan. I attend Dryden Elementary School where I am in the 5th grade, and have been on the honor roll the past 5 years. I play softball and basketball, play the saxophone, and show cattle. I love doing all those things, but I love riding and showing my horse Tyroan the best. I started out like most exhibitors, showing leading line, then moved to the small fry events when I was 5 years old. I am very excited for the 2016 show season, because this will be my first year showing in the 13 & under events. I’d like to wish all the MQHA exhibitors good luck this show season!

My name is Alicia Ritsema, I am 16 years old and a junior at Schoolcraft High School, in Kalamazoo County. I have been riding horses for 10 years and showing quarter horse for 4 years. The past year, along with this year, my show partner has been The Last Good Mac (aka Tucker). Last year we won the Rookie Youth Hunter Under Saddle at the AQHA East Coast Novice Championship Show, and we also got 9th in the Horsemanship and the Novice Hunter Under Saddle. When I am not riding horses, I participate in an Education of Employment class that will help me in the future to become a doctor. I am also a freshman mentor at my school. Good luck to all the exhibitors showing and have a great show season!

She will provide a list to Jeff West so he can start working on placement for sponsor and those who paid for priority camping. She will be ordering some more signs for camping spaces. The concession is lined up. The saddles are in. The headstalls should be in at any time and the final awards have been ordered. She is in need of a scribe on Tuesday for trail. The number of jumps and rails needs to be confirmed with the fairgrounds. JOURNAL, FACEBOOK AND WEBSITE: QUEEN: Kathy Christensen mentioned that she had a person request to run for queen. Entries were down a total of 28, campers down 13 and stalls rented increased by 13. The grounds expense was up due to an increase in the rental of the grounds, including camping. The temporary stalls also increased in cost for 2016. The condition of the riding arena was a topic of a lengthy discussion. Kris Woroniecki read an email from the Allegan County Fairgrounds Executive Director, Saree Miller. Saree apologized for the issues that we had at the show this year. She reiterated the plan for the arenas which is to remove all of the sand from the arenas, level the arenas and add either four inches of fine crushed dust or clay. Once it is packed, they will then add two inches of sand back on top. In addition to the arenas, she also listed several more items that will be addressed for next year which include signage and parking help while the antique show is taking place. Once the arenas are fixed, which should be by the end of August, the hope is that the membership can be invited out for a day to ride on it and voice their opinions. YOUTH: Youth President, MacKenzie Chapman stated that the mandatory Youth World Show meeting was held last night. Everything went well. Sasha Glover explained that during the meeting, the decision was made to spend the fundraising money on the port a cools, the night watchman and team t-shirts. Additional fundraising income will be disbursed after the meeting at the Harbor Classic and upon the final review of the raffle fundraiser. Kris Woroniecki stated that she will begin to process the Youth World Show Team entries next week. They are due July 1. She is hoping to have them sent in to AQHA at least a week early. Jeff West explained the process of the selection committee for the world show team. Jeff West explained NYATT and NYATT team requirements. Youth minutes from the March and April, 2016 meetings were reviewed. Tom Powers made a motion to accept the youth minutes. Chris Perniciaro seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. OLD BUSINESS: None NEW BUSINESS: Jeff West asked to speak about the school calendar. Schools had been starting after Labor Day. They will now be required to go 180 days per year instead of 170 days. This is forcing the schools to start much earlier. Many schools are also getting stricter about the number of school days a child can miss. Discussion needs to happen soon about how to treat school days for team points and for year end points. Kris Woroniecki also spoke to the Board and indicated that she would like to stop managing the MQHA Horse Shows effective in 2017. She has suggested that the position be opened up for bids. She is interested in maintaining the Executive Secretary job, if the Association wishes for that to happen and if the hours and pay make sense. A motion to adjourn was made at 9:15. by unanimous consent without objection. NEXT MEETING: Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at

the MSU Pavilion, East Lansing, MI, Classroom B at 7 p.m. ELECTRONIC BOARD CORRESPONDENCE: MQHA rules now allow for electronic voting when necessary. Any information voted on electronically between meetings will be recorded on the next set of minutes in this section:

A NOTE FROM THE MQ OFFICE Every morning, I am fortunate enough to wake up and look out the window at an amazing view. The lake, often like glass, reflects the trees and the sky so elegantly that if you take a photograph, and turn the picture around and around you will never know which way it is really supposed to go. This view is 50 feet from my bedroom window. Also within view is our pontoon, still wrapped from being winterized, the dock, not put in the water and my kayak, which is now doubling as a bull frog hideaway. As some of us are very aware, life goes by too quickly. Now that I have made the transition into “select” company, I have begun to realize how quickly I arrived here. My kids, no longer kids, but grown men. My husband looking for a golf partner. My best friend growing up, a new widow. Our parents – always fiercely independent, now requiring some extra help. I’ve been in this business since 1987, and my first horse shows were with Tom Powers. I then started working full time for MQHA in 2001. For 16 years I have managed both the office and the horse shows. I have spent a lot of time away from home. For years, I didn’t celebrate Mother’s Day. I haven’t had an Easter, Memorial Day weekend or a Fourth of July with my family or friends since I can’t remember when. I have finally decided it is time to hang up my horseshow hat and take a deep breath. I have notified the MQHA Board of Directors that effective in 2017, I no longer wish to manage the horse shows. I will remain the Executive Secretary of the Association. As of the August meeting, my contract has been negotiated and approved. I will continue to take care of things for all of you, including stall and camping reservations, fully intending to maintain the continuity that you are used to. Everything should remain as it has been, the only difference is that I won’t pack up and be at the events. As of this writing, the Board has not made a final decision on who will manage the events, but rest assured that we will all do our best to make the transition as smooth as possible for all of you. This is of the utmost importance to us. I ask that you remain patient and understanding especially for whoever steps in to do this job. You are like my family and I want you to know that I care about all of you and appreciate the friendships that have been built over the years. I won't be far, just around the corner. ~ Kris www.MIQuarterHorse.com

Congratulations MQHA Royalty! 2016 Queen Andrea Armbruster Princess Ashley Rytman & Jr Princess Dana Moody On Saturday, July 9th, at the Harbor Classic, MQHA crowned their 2016 Queen. Miss Andrea Armbruster, of Milan, Michigan, has a Liberal Arts degree from Washtenaw Community College. She currently works for Camis, Inc. Andrea shows her mare “Val,” GSF Hot To Be Invited, in Amateur classes. She is a fourth generation horsewoman, and has been riding horses ever since she was born. From her first year in 4-H to her senior year on the Milan High School Equestrian Team, her partner was a little bay mare named Double Dee Chips. Her favorite class then, with “Snickers” was showmanship. In the last few years, with GSF Hot To Be Invited, Andrea has earned Top Ten awards at the Novice Championships, Reserve Amateur All Around at the 2014 Harbor Classic, 2015 MQHA High Point Halter Mare, and Top Ten awards for 2014 and 2015 at the MQHA Convention. Andrea is looking forward to the All American Quarter Horse Congress where she will be competing in the Queen’s Contest. MQHA wishes her the best during this competition! The MQHA Princess Contest was held on Friday, July 8th. We had eleven beautiful young ladies hoping to be either Princess or Jr. Princess. After doing a Horsemanship pattern and answering a couple of questions, the 2016 Princess and Jr. Princess were chosen. Congratulations to Princess Ashley Rytman and Jr. Princess Dana Moody. Thank you to Queen Andrea Armbruster for organizing this wonderful event!

MQHA Hello MQHA! I hope everyone has had a warm, safe, and horse filled summer! It was great to see our association gathered in Ludington, and I hope you got to stick your toes in the sand.

for this Contest, and for that I want you to know how sincerely I appreciate it. Thank you to my parents and family, who have always supported me on this journey! I’ll see everyone in the fall as we wrap up the end of the show season in Michigan! Take care until then, and best wishes. Love from, Andrea

First of all, I want to thank the MQHA and NMQHA staffs for once again organizing and having a successful Harbor Classic! Thank you for your efforts, I know it required patience at times since it was a new format and there were a few kinks to work out, but the show wrapped up well as always, regardless! Congratulations to all of the exhibitors and their horses who achieved the All-Around and Reserve All-Around titles at the end of the show, that is truly an amazing accomplishment! A second special thanks goes out to the girls who participated in the MQHA Princess Contest. All of the young ladies did such a wonderful job, and it was absolutely the hardest decision of the show. I would like to congratulate our two new Princesses: Junior Princess, Dana Moody and Princess Ashley Rytman! They all completed a horsemanship pattern on stick horseback, took note of specific details, and then answered questions about their horses and favorite things to do. I would also like to thank the three judges, Cindy Fultz, Kay Stanek, and Marla Dais for helping with the Contest on Friday evening! Saturday morning, our two newly crowned Princesses and I went out to the beach for the photo shoot, and we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful morning, albeit very windy. With the days dwindling down at the Harbor Classic, it was time to take my test, and complete my own horsemanship pattern (unfortunately not on a stick horse, but Valerie (my horse) did a great job for me anyway), and I was crowned as the 2016 MQHA Queen. I’m looking forward to competing for the Congress Queen crown again in October, and now that I have a year under my crown, I’m ready to try again, and try even harder! Once again this year, I am truly grateful and blessed that I’ve gotten this opportunity to represent my MQHA family as their Queen.

2016 MQHA Queen Andrea Armbruster
