INTRODUCTION The theater is located in between the Sydney CBD and the Domain. There are lots of historic spots, for example, the Cathedral and Museum in the surroundings. The intention of the theater design is to bring some basic architectural elements, such as columns, walls, and materials from the surrounding historic buildings, into the space to create a “subminiature city”- a space with inclusiveness and openness as the main feature. In an attempt to activate the flow of people in the site and evoke the interaction of the visitors with historical spots, the theater has been deconstructed from the entirety into fragmented four parts: the main interior theater, a cafe, a bookstore combination with office and an exterior public theater. Where the space arrangement is based on the principle of “Pushing and Pulling” that each altering of the elements acts in different ways in various spaces that either concentrate people or diffuse.

UTZON STUDY_ CANLIS HOUSE If the urban context is a grid, then each building is also transformed through grids. In Canlis House, the building is separated into four parts facing different orientations, therefore entire grids are separated into four different pieces; the intersections of the staggered grids are the location of each column. The walls are inserted into the void between the columns, which created various intimate or semi-private spaces. Then the gap between the walls forms the access and circulations. Finally, the unused pillars are subtracted based on Utzon’s Additive Architecture. If there are no walls, the space between the two rows of columns will form aisles that allowed people to access any area as a transition. Some of these building grids are parallel to the urban context, and some are off-axis. Each grid’s orientation depends on various factors, such as access, walking pass, and view. And these factors are also related to the surrounding environment, local culture, and the function needs of the building.

ANALYSIS OF THE SPACE ARRANGEMENT The diagrams show the deduction of the rule in the arrangement of Canlis House through tracing the plan. The void formed between the houses in the last two diagrams illustrated that the orientation of the walls creates an indiscernible power that can lead people to a different place, not only in action but also in the view.
17
18
ARCHITECTURAL FRAGMENT 1 COLUMN & WALL The distance between the columns and walls and the arrangement of the columns both plays an important role in the extent of openness and closure of spaces. Each gap and voids of the space create multiple opportunities in leading people into different spaces.

Altering the shape of the theater following the pushing and pulling principle.
The theater/ lounge/ bar has been raised to a certain level to avoid the street’s noise to the lounge. The storage, staff room, and dining area are then arranged on the ground floor for service visitors and staff in convenience. The ground floor has the same orientation as the cafe to guide people’s concentration towards the exterior public theater.
43
The negative space under the main theater formed a multifunctional area. The origional function is a viewing patio.
The patio can also act as a public presentation space.

It can also be used as an exterior dining area that corresponds to the ground floor dining area.

The timber louver of the bar has a high density on the top and lower density at the bottom that the visitors inside the bar can gain better protection from the direct sunlight and has a nice view of the central courtyard. The edge of the staircase combine with the edge of the upper louver responds to the principle of pushing and pulling that can bring visitors a feeling of compression and concentration through this visual experience.
